The Eraserheads, Eraserheads, or E-Heads was a prominent Pinoy rock band of the 1990s, formed by Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro. The band is one of the most successful, critically-acclaimed, and significant bands in the history of Original Pinoy Music, earning them the accolade, "The Beatles of the Philippines." The Eraserheads are also credited for spearheading a second wave of Manila band invasions, paving the way for a host of influential Philippine alternative rock bands such as Rivermaya and Yano.

The band released several singles, albums, and EPs that reached number one. This commercial success was most evident in the release of their third album Cutterpillow, which achieved platinum status several times. The Eraserheads are one of the best-selling musical acts of all time in the Philippines, paving way for an international career that earned them the "Moon Man" in the MTV Video Music Awards.

Their diverse music worked both in the underground and mainstream scenes of the Philippine music industry. By fusing different musical styles such as alternative, pop, rock, reggae, and synthpop the Eraserheads helped change the sound of Pinoy rock.

Press Release: SMART presents the highly anticipated “Eraserheads: The Final Set”

http://www.eheadscountdown.com/images/eheads-smart.jpg

Leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART), in partnership with MTV Philippines, bring back the unfinished concert of local music’s legendary band the Eraserheads.

Scheduled on March 7, 2009, the highly anticipated concert, Eraserheads The Final Set will be staged at the SM Mall of Asia, as announced by Bong Mojica, SMART’s Wireless Consumer Division Head at the recent event press con in Bonifacio Global City.

Mojica said that the telco’s involvement in the re-staging of the E-heads concert is its way of giving back to consumers who have made SMART Buddy the number one pre-paid mobile service provider in the country. “SMART Buddy is all about providing its subscribers with fun and compelling content, events and activities. We believe that through the E-heads concert, consumers will not only have fun but will walk away with an unforgettable experience.”

SMART Buddy also became the first to offer tracks recorded live from the Eraserheads’ first hit reunion concert last August 2008 via its SMART Buddy Music Store, the country’s first and biggest mobile music portal. The virtual music store provides SMART subscribers access to a vast catalogue of music from all major record labels, allowing them to download and play the music they want, wherever they are, directly via their handset.

Signature E-heads songs such as “Alapaap”, “With A Smile”, and “Ligaya” can be downloaded in full-track format from the store for only P50, while MP3 true tones are available for P30 and Caller Ringback Tunes for only P15 for 15 days.

Surfing the SMART wapsite (http://wap.smart.com.ph) and browsing the SMART Buddy Music Store (http://wap.smart.com.ph/musicstore) is free, and subscribers pay only for the content that they download and use.

To enjoy the Eraserheads reunion concert tracks, send EHEADS to 3456. This service is exclusive to SMART subscribers only.

Smart Communications, Inc. is the Philippines’ leading wireless services provider with 31.6 million subscribers on its GSM network as of end-March 2008. Of its total subscriber base, 20.6 million subscribers are served under the brands Smart Buddy, Smart Gold and Smart Infinity and another 11 million subscribers are served through its subsidiary, Pilipino Telephone Corp., under the brand Talk ‘N Text. SMART has built a reputation for innovation, having introduced world-first wireless data services, including mobile commerce services such as Smart Money, Smart Load and Smart Padala.

SMART also offers a 3G service, Smart 3G. Its Smart Link and Blue Ocean Wireless services provide communications to the global maritime industry. The Print Ads and Posters are out!

http://www.eheadscountdown.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/ad-small.jpg

Any stray thoughts that this concert might have actually turned out to be one elaborate hoax quickly dissipated last weekend when the first salvo of print advertisements for “Eraserheads Live! The Final Set” appeared in the local broadsheets last Saturday. And of course, concert producer MTV started churning out commercials on a steady basis on its own channel.

If we were to do a critique of the poster/ad design, this is what we make of it. Putting on our poetic rose-colored glasses and gazing through them, we can hazard a few guesses.

That circle with the eHeads’ somber sunglass-covered faces represents that big rotunda at the Mall of Asia and the roads that lead to it. That patch of green is the field where the concert will be held.

Then of course, we could be completely wrong!

There’s no mistaking the ad’s highly dramatic taglines:

“More than 10 Million Fans… Only 100,000 will witness.”

“Will You Be A Part of History?”

Now one might argue that 100,000 people is just about the amount of people needed to overthrow a government. But this gig might just go down as one of the biggest concerts of the decade. As for the “historic” tag - well the bets are on that this might be the last time that people with get to see the Eraserheads play together as a group for a very very long time.

One can never say “never” of course. Maybe one day, four geezers might mount the stage again. After all, Iggy Pop did reunite with the Stooges after thirty years.

Here’s a closeup of the poster layout:

The Giant Eheads Billboard on EDSA Pioneer

http://www.eheadscountdown.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/billboard-small.jpg

Regular north-bound commuters on EDSA won’t miss it. Globe employees on the way to work won’t miss it. A gigantic Eraserheads billboard went up at the corner of EDSA-Pioneer this week, advertising the “Final Set” and the Smart Buddy Eheads downloads promo (Just text EHEADS to 234 !).

It’s so huge that it’s definitely going to make a mark among the regular vistas one sees when stuck in EDSA traffic.

This space has often been used for SMART’s music sponsorships - prior to this theme, Wolfgang was on the billboard advertising their album “Villains”, and prior to this it was used for the Buddy downloads of the Eheads Live album.

Sharp-eyed Eraserheads mailing list subscriber Cheche Pido snapped a digital photo of the billboard with her cameraphone and posted it on her Multiply blog, thereby enshrining the image to cyberspace history forever. Thanks, Cheche!

Here’s a bigger image of the billboard:

MARCO HARDER: Marcus Adoro’s Guitar Tech on how he got THE gig

http://www.eheadscountdown.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/marcus.jpg

Taken once again from the pulsing electrons at our content partner Pulse.PH, we have writer Aldus Santos’ doing an interview with Marco Harder (guitarist for the band Purple Chickens), on how he ended up doing guitar tech duties for Marcus Adoro on the night of that historic 08.30.08 concert.

Aldus Santos: So, how did your tech-ing gig for Marcus Adoro eventually happen?

Marco Harder: Nagbigay kasi siya ng open invite [in his website] if you wanted to be in the concert, and I sent an e-mail to the address given there. Sabi ko, “If you don’t have a tech, I’ll take on the job—for the sheer love of it, and for free passes to the gig.” And then I got an e-mail from Mica [Solmoro] saying they’ll get me for the job.

http://www.eheadscountdown.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/marcus-2.jpg

A.S.: Tell us about the first rehearsal.

M.H.: Sa first rehearsal, du’n ‘yung una kong trabaho with all of Marcus’s gear and all. Akala namin maaga kami dumating; ‘yun pala naunahan na kami ni Raimund. Ayos na ‘yung gamit niya. Nu’ng pumunta kami du’n, ‘di pa ayos ‘yung presets ni Marcus, eh. He was using stock presets; he was fiddling around.

A.S.: What state were the Eraserheads in as a band?

M.H.: Alam mong alam nila ‘yung mga kanta—ewan ko, siguro dahil first time ko silang makita in years uli—it was, really, like a lot of people have said, a group of musicians playing together, more than a band that has rehearsed to execute the songs a certain way. From a technical standpoint, the setups have become more complex than the last time I saw them. ‘Yun ‘yung lasting memory du’n, kasi parang, lahat sila, kumplikado na ‘yung pedalboard as opposed to before. ‘Di ko naman sila dating nakikita nang ganu’n. Pinaka-kumplikado ko nang nakita was a single Zoom pedal back in 1999.

A.S.: Were there glitches during that first rehearsal?

M.H.: May slight glitches din, kasi ‘yung amp ni Marcus nu’n, may ugong, so pinalitan ng same model din. Another thing was, binili niya ‘yung [multi-effects] pedal siguro two days before the rehearsal, so we never had a chance to tweak it. Nag-work naman. Another problem was the wireless element of it—all of them had wirelesses. And, being a new “professional” tech, that was the first time I’d be working with a wireless. And I’ve never really trusted wireless systems—dahil nga, you know, [baka mangyari 'yung nangyari sa] Spinal Tap, ta’s hindi maganda ‘yung frequency regulations natin. ‘Yun lang ang iniisip ko buong time na nagre-rehearse sila: “How do I hook it up to the wireless? How do I make sure that it’s noise-free?”

A.S.: Take us to show night.

M.H.: It was very windy that night, and naka-open-air ‘yung mga gitara, so I had to retune every time it was returned. The major thing that gave me nightmares—for weeks on end after the gig—was the power supply sa baba ng stage. Bumigay siya, so it wasn’t giving out “clean” power, and digital devices want “clean” power. So, what happened was, the thing was rebooting all over. That was the biggest problem that I wasn’t able to anticipate.

I was very apologetic to Marcus about it, but sabi niya, “Hindi, hindi mo problema; kasi kuryente ['yan], hindi natin kargo.” Dapat na-foresee ko ‘yun, kasi, especially during soundcheck the previous night, meron namang problemang lumitaw sa amp naman ni Ely. They got a 70s Silver Face Fender Twin Reverb, and within thirty minutes of playing, it went up in smoke. I think, from a technical standpoint, it revealed several things: one, don’t underestimate “dirty” [or unregulated] power here in the Philippines; two, if the power is “dirty,” there’s also the risk of electrocution. Naisip ko lang ‘yun nu’ng after the gig na, eh. There could have been a risk that Ely or Marcus could have been electrocuted, because they were using tube amplifiers.

http://www.eheadscountdown.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/marcus-3.jpg

A.S.: In all of this, how much of you was a fan, and how much of you was a working technician?

M.H.: Hati ‘yung pagiging fan ko ‘tsaka pagiging tech. One point of view was, “’Ayan na, tuloy na!” Pangalawa, “Sana walang problema; sana walang sumabit na kable; sana ‘wag maubusan ng baterya ‘yung wireless!” Nu’ng countdown na ‘yun, the feeling was incomparable. This is going to sound egotistical, but, you kind of feel like you made it happen, in a way? There’s a part of me that thinks that this is something I helped make happen—something that’s going to be very important to a lot of people, years on—even from a very small technical detail. And it’s on record! Those tones are history now.

A.S.: Speaking of guitar tones, was Marcus bent on sounding the way he sounded on their records? He sounds very differently now in Markus Highway.

M.H.: Ang mindset ni Marcus nu’n was really to get the tones that they had on the records. He was telling me, “You have to listen to the songs talaga,” and talagang gusto niya habulin ‘yung mga tones na nasa record, in such a way na magwo-work pa rin sa live. Being the tech, I just asked him to “Play the song; let’s tweak as you play; tell me what you want. I don’t want you to think about the tones; I want you to think of your performance.” Para ‘di siya ma-istorbo. Sobrang stressful sa kanya nu’ng event, eh. Binigay niya lang sa akin ‘yung manual [nu'ng multi-effects pedal], tapos aralin ko daw. Pero kabisado ni Makoy ‘yung Digitech, eh; he’s been using it ever since daw—’93, ‘94?—the earlier models, like RP-1.

A.S.: How did you communicate onstage on show night? I mean, it was a huge stage; did you have hand signals?

M.H.: Simple lang: whenever he wanted me onstage, he would look at his lower right—I was at the corner, within sight parati. Basta tumingin siya, akyat ako du’n; takbo ako du’n. Minsan, napapansin ko na naiistorbo siya ng kable niya, kasi ang haba ng kableng kinuha namin.

A.S.: Any amusing pre-show anecdotes? Makoy, it seems, is perennially unperturbed.

M.H.: Sabi niya, “Magkita tayo sa Cubao.” May kukunin daw siyang gitara. Eh, 9:30 na nu’n, pasara na ['yung shop], so sabi ko [sa text], “O, ‘eto, pasara na; ano’ng gagawin natin?” “Sabihin mo, dadating ako; may pina-reserve akong acoustic.” Bumili siya on a whim, sort of. Dumating siya after fifteen minutes. Tapos, ‘di sila nagkaintindihan sa discount [nu'ng isang guy], tapos ‘etong Makoy, nag-flare-up, “Ano, pare? Akala ko ba twenty-five percent ‘to? ‘Wag mo kong ginaganyan—alam ko ‘yang math, okay?” [laughs] ‘Yung mga guys, understanding naman.

A.S.: You’re both guitar players and you respect each other’s work, but how are you different, you think? I mean, this is sort of important since you’re tech-ing for him.

M.H.: He’s not really finicky, but he knows what he wants. ‘Yun siguro ang pagkakaiba namin.

A.S.: Great, great. Okay, I know I already asked this in a way, but how do you assess the band’s present form? I mean, they belong to a host of different bands now.

M.H.: Okay naman sila as a unit, eh. I would say the rumors of animosity are not true at all. Parang wala naman, eh. Mas na-appreciate ko ‘yung proseso nila. Alam mong pinag-isipan talaga. I think they used the technical upgrade to represent the character of the songs at those times. I would like to contest the opinion, during the reunion, that they were a so-so live group. Hindi rin, eh. Hindi mo matatawaran ‘yung rhythm section; hindi mo matatawaran ‘yung confidence and competence ni Ely doing those duties; ‘tsaka ‘yung mindset ni Makoy na alam niya kung kailan siya kailangan at kailan siya kailangang lumikod. Alam nila ‘yung roles nila. Mas magaling na sila lahat—by lightyears.

Where the Good Seats are at the Final Eraserheads Set

http://www.eheadscountdown.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/ticket-layout.jpg

So you’re off to buy your ticket to the Last Eraserheads Concert - well the final set at least, for a very long time. What ticket should you get?

Good question.

One of the most Frequently Asked Questions we’ve been hearing about the “Final Set” is - what’s the difference between a “Gold A” ticket and a “Silver B” ticket? And what about a Bronze? As it happens, there’s a world of difference.

It’s not just a change of precious metals, the difference between an A seat and a B seat could mean the difference between seeing the stage with your bare naked peepers and having 16,000 bobbing heads in front of you.

http://www.eheadscountdown.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/ely-bw.jpg

Here’s the deal - It’s free seating all around, which means first come first served. So do come early.

Let’s start with the seats up in front. The VIP section has room for 1,500 very fortunate ticket holders.

But after that, the two Gold sections put together seat a whopping 32,000. There are Gold A sections which fit the first 16,000. And after which follows the Gold B section for another 16,000.

The two Silver sections (A and B) fit in 16,000 each. After which, the General Admission or Bronze section in the rear fits 34,500. For a grand total of 100,000.

And if you’re one of the lucky 100,000 - you’re still better off than someone who never experienced the gig in the first place.

Putting 100,000 concertgoers together puts the gig on the bigger end of the live music scale. Sure there are larger events - Woodstock in the 60’s (300,000), UK’s annual Glastonbury Festival (typically 177,000) or Brazil’s Rock in Rio (a million concertgoers) are larger - but this is one event featuring just one band.

To aid in your understanding, here’s a chart that details the seating (or standing arrangement in this case).

ROBIN RIVERA: GATEKEEPER - A conversation with the Eraserheads’ long time record producer

From the electronic pages of our content partner Pulse.PH comes this rare profile of “Sir” Robin Rivera from the able keyboard of writer Aldus Santos. Robin is often referred to as the “Fifth Eraserhead” - the U.P. professor turned album producer - a meticulous sonic craftsman who guided the Eraserheads through some of the most classic albums in Pinoy Rock history.

It has been said over: looks can be deceiving.

His dark blue shirt, shorts, and tennis shoes were hardly a give-away. The three stripes on his shirt’s shoulders, though a vague reminder of the fashion sense of his most popular clients to date, could of course be worn by anyone. His graying hair and faintly bloodshot eyes gave him an intense air about him, although, really, he could have just been an intense accountant on his Mediterranean-cuisine break.

When Robin Rivera speaks, still, he’s more professorial than producerly. But he is both: an art studies professor at the premiere state university, and, well, the celebrated producer of the Eraserheads’ albums. What record producers do, it seems, is something people never fully grasped, but it could be comparable to a musical performance in itself. While his clients typically wielded guitars and drums, Rivera wielded entire studios and captained the ship, so to speak.

http://www.eheadscountdown.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/robin.jpg

Without record producers, says Guardian writer Graeme Thomson, “U2 would probably still sound like The Alarm.” Thomson, however, was alluding to the “knob-twiddlers,” and Rivera has proven that he is no mere engineer gallivanting as producer.

“In Pop U, I’d already shown them the basic procedures. Apart from being their liaison [to the studio engineer], it was also my objective to teach them how it’s done: ‘This is how to set up an agenda.’ ‘This is how to arrange your tracking.’ ‘This is how to make your schedule.’ ‘This is how you record a guitar,’” the good professor shared in a single sustained breath, adding, “Because I’m a teacher—you can’t take that away from me—tinuruan ko sila how it’s done—’I want you to learn this.’ To me, I also had a pedagogical objective. I wanted them to be able to do it on their own, eventually.”

Indeed, as early as Cutterpillow, the ‘Heads would dabble in producing other bands themselves. When the ‘Heads wrapped up each session for their third album around suppertime, Ely Buendia and Raymund Marasigan would stay behind to produce what would become Sugar Hiccup’s Oracle. “Okay, you’re a big hit now, but what are you gonna do after?,” Sir Robin would prod them in the early days. “Heaven knows how long they would have lasted as stars, and thank God they learned, very quickly. They did a really good job on that album [Oracle]. That was a wonderful album. Apparently, I did the right thing,” the producer visibly beamed with pride.

Before his “students” were able to fully fend for themselves, however, Robin would be their full-time mentor. It was perhaps the pedagogue in him which prompted the studio ethic he adopted with the boys, and, unlike popular producers like Phil Spector (who worked with John Lennon) or, say, someone like Brendan O’ Brien (who produced the early Stone Temple Pilots records), he would rather step back unless needed and let the children mill around in their high-tech playpen. “I worked with the ‘Heads prior to [Ultraelectromagneticpop!].

While they were working on Ultra [which was produced by Ed Formoso], Raymund would come to me and ask for my advice. In my case, though, I got called by BMG. Apparently, the band lobbied that I be their producer,” the professor recounted. Rivera had no superstars in his studio CV, and, in the past, he recorded non-commercial material—classical, folk, choral—in pretty much the same manner Beatles producer George Martin did no rock prior to the Fab Four (he did comic and novelty recordings).

“I think it was just [for] one song first ['Wating'], to ‘test-drive’ me—because the label didn’t know who the hell I was,” Rivera began. “Before I knew it, I was called back to produce what became Circus. The deal was that I didn’t want [to have] anything to do with the budget. Basta, sa akin, it was logistical: to set up the studio, help them creatively, help them technologically.”

Clearly, Rivera wasn’t out to make himself heard or felt in these records. His design involved one thing and one thing only: record the Eraserheads and make them sound like a band playing on a good day. “The music was theirs, basically. The sound of the recordings? Maybe I had a part in it—maybe. The important thing to me was, if they asked me, ‘We wanna do this, sir,’ my job was to find a way to do it, to find a way to get it done—whether it was musically or logistically. I’d find a way so they can execute what’s in their heads,” Rivera further explained, adding, “I wanted to be good friends with them. I wasn’t looking to be an uncle or a father figure or a father-confessor. That’s not my style, eh. I think naman that they considered me as that; marami naman kaming pinagsamahan, but it’s all in the studio.”

Slowly, their relationship grew from a rigid mentorship to a more intimate brand of camaraderie. Gradually, the “Sir” in “Sir Robin” was dropped, and a friendship rooted in studio geekery was forged. And when Robin gave, he gave his all: “When I was recording them, I stopped listening to the albums of the other local bands. I stopped altogether, because I didn’t want to compare them to anyone. I wanted them to sound different, and the only way to do that was to not listen to the other recordings.” At the height of the insane 90s band boom, this was a most difficult undertaking, judging from the steady influx of local band material—Teeth, Rivermaya, Yano, Color It Red, Parokya ni Edgar—but Robin, true to his word, shrugged them all off and stayed with the ‘Heads.

“Kami sa Eraserheads, we used a lot of studio time, but we worked our asses off. We never wasted any time whatsoever. Pagpasok namin sa studio, talagang—’Aaah!’—full speed ahead kami. And I was rather proud of that,” Rivera described. Often conducting himself like he would conduct a class, he passed out “homework” to the boys and often began a studio day saying, “This is what we’re doing today, and by God, we’re not gonna leave until we’re finished.”

More than looking out after the boys, Rivera was also adamant to discover new recording terrain, with, certainly, the rest of the music industry in mind. In the beginning, he felt that, despite the Eraserheads’ industrious nature, “We could [still] use more time, especially for developing new techniques. Because, if you don’t have room for experimentation, you’re [bound to] do the same thing. Everyone will benefit eventually, ‘yung buong industriya.”

And it did: when they wrapped up work on Aloha Milkyway in under two weeks, the Eraserheads’ studio setup—like some religious artifact—was left untouched, so the others can marvel, and, hopefully, benefit. To this day, some of the studio sleights-of-hand they discovered in the process are still being used.

“All the recordings that [engineer] Angee [Rozul] did after that project—he was able to use those techniques. I was very happy for him. Because of that, the way bands were recorded, in some ways, changed. That was a very challenging project. We didn’t want to sound like the usual. The three [new] songs there didn’t sound like anything we’ve ever done before. It changed the industry somewhat; that’s what I’m very happy about.”

ROBIN RIVERA: GATEKEEPER
STEP INSIDE THE STUDIO WITH THE ERASERHEADS AS THEIR LONG-TIME RECORD PRODUCER ANNOTATES (PART 2)

by Aldus Santos

Equal parts studio artist and logistician, Rivera always put emphasis on order and a rigorous program. He would invariably go, “Okay, Marcus, you have to work on this,” or “Ely, we're gonna do this, so I want you to fix it already by the time you get to the studio.” Luckily, the producer shared, “When they get there, they already had an idea what they were gonna do. It was just a question of, ‘How fast can they execute their ideas?’” The Eraserheads, needless to say, had very distinct personalities and conducted themselves very differently in the studio. “Ely would always come, and whatever he wanted to do, he had already broken it down to very, very small things. So, he would work on them one after another, these very, very little things. 'O, what's next?' 'I'm gonna do this guitar overdub.' 'Where in the arrangement are you going to do this?' 'Sir, it's here, here, here, and here,'” he said of his singer and mainman, gesturing with his fingers like an agog child in a candy store, and, on his drummer, he offered, “Raymund, because he plays drums—it was very hard to punch in drums—most of his performances were from beginning to end. They have to be practically in real time. Raymund, again, he does his homework, he knows exactly what he's going to do—it's just a matter of, 'Can he pull it off?' [For] each drum part, we'll do about three, four, five takes. Usually, by the fifth take, he's happy with it. I just wait 'til he says, 'Sir, that's the one!'” His bassist, because of his proficiency, perhaps necessitated the least amount of looking-after, and he shared, “Buddy, every time he does a repeat, there's very little variation.” On his beachnik guitar player, meanwhile, “Marcus naman is the opposite of Ely. Marcus doesn't break things down to small, neat pieces; usually, it's one big thing. I remember when we did 'Maskara' from Carbon Stereoxide. He showed up with this really big idea: 'Sir, I'm going to play the entire rhythm guitar part backwards. I really practiced hard for it.' 'Bahala ka.'” The low-profile frontman of Markus Highway was, in his heyday, utterly unpredictable, to say the very, very least. “'Pag ganyan, you flip the tape over, and what you hear from all the previous tracks is backwards. So, you have to hear it several times before you know what you're hearing corresponds to which section—just to know where you are! The time indicator was also baliktad, so we were computing,” the producer further elaborated on Makoy's magic moment, emphasizing, “In Marcus's case, it's usually a very, very, very big idea, which, many times, makes it more difficult to pull off than what Ely does—pero, 'pag nagawa naman, 'Wow!' It's worth the trouble.”

As the boys grew in popularity, so did their creative restlessness. No longer were they simple Fender Stratocaster-loving college kids. They became, with the aid of Robin Rivera, one of the most envied studio bands in the land. From the naked, arguably lackluster aural quality of some of their earlier material—perhaps “Pare Ko,” most certainly “Tindahan ni Aling Nena,” in my opinion—they became the band to beat in studio wizardry. “There's one point, I remember—especially towards Natin 99—where, in addition to tape, we all had virtual tracks. They went to Japan, and they all had MDs, or mini-dics. So, they'd record at home, and we'd reload those into the studio systems. 'Pag nand'yan na, 'tsaka na lang mag-o-overdub si Ely ng mga stuff that was better done in the studio than at home—acoustic guitars, drums, stuff like that,” Rivera shared, exclaiming, “Anak ng tokwa, we were using twenty-four tracks on tape, and we were laying back at least twelve more into the computer, so we were running anywhere from twenty-four to forty-eight tracks per song! It was really quite amazing. 'Ang daming gamit, o!' And this was before PCs, ha. I can't walk on the floor anymore because there was so much stuff.”

With the technology, of course, came the subtle decline in human interaction, prompted in part by geography. “At that point, they weren't living together anymore. Dati kasi, they all live within four to five blocks of each other at U.P. Village. But, siyempre, at one point, Raymund moved over to Marikina—he was renting a house with his brothers; Buddy was in another house in U.P. Village; Ely was in Teachers Village naman, because he had moved out of the apartment with Marcus. They weren't living that closely to each other anymore,” the teacher recounted, emphasizing the great leap in his boys’ circumstances, whereas, “Dati nga, eh—I remember we used to record Mondays and Thursdays yata—Ely and Marcus had the same coding day, Wednesday. I'd pick up Ely first, then Marcus. Dadaanan ko sila, tapos gigisingin ko na sila.”

http://www.pulse.ph/images/articles/image/articles/robin2_body.jpg

Indeed, the narratives gave way to free association, and the organic gave way to the constructed. By the sunrise of Sticker Happy, the garage charm of the 'Heads will be replaced with a much disembodied, almost alien-like sensibility. By Natin 99, that quality would reach even greater heights. However, the 'Heads weren't noise artists, nor were they peddlers of dissonance, and their penchant for memorable melodies and turns-of-phrase remained intact. “People knew that they were already living apart from each other, and maybe you might get that impression, listening to the records,” Rivera guessed. “However, if you listen to the recordings alone, the objective was always to make it seem like everything was originating from one place. That was always my target. Eventually, they were able to set up their little studios at home, and that took over.” As Carbon Stereoxide swung by, it was getting clearer that, not only have the Diliman lads grown in songcraft, they have also developed as studio artists. However, their celebrated producer shared, “To me, [my role] has stayed pretty much the same. The thing with the Eraserheads was that we recorded so many albums together that, by the latter albums, I didn't have to tell them anymore what to do. They sort of knew already, eh.” The good professor, who around this time had just started work on his doctorate degree, would have two to three voluminous , er, volumes in the studio. As he flipped through the pages, he would be swathed in the 'Heads' technical banter, and he was like a confident parent letting his children loose without any fear of broken limbs or broken china, so to speak.

Needless to say, Robin Rivera had enough academic detachment to appreciate how his most popular clients became not only a phenomenon, but a standing metaphor for a well-lived life as well. “Each album has some connection to what they were going through. Ultra, Circus, and Cutterpillow were the adolescent albums. These were the albums in which you see, most of the themes are all those which happen to people who were experiencing adolescence,” he opined on the 'Heads' first triad of releases, continuing, “Pagdating ng Fruitcake, that was another part of their lives: they weren't kids anymore. They wanted to do something a little more ambitious—something that still had something whimsical, but still had something different.” “Pagdating ng Sticker Happy,” he offered of their genre-bending release, “they began traveling. They were beginning to see the world; they were getting older. Those songs had something to do with discovering new territories.” He offered the same dissection of Natin 99, saying, “They were experiencing new places, new technology—new this, new that. It's something that only a twentysomething would write. Unfortunately, the people who started out with them—who were now actually twentysomethings—were more interested in clinging to their adolescence, because that was the part of their lives that was fun. Because, now, they're working—and work is drudgery.” “Mas lalo ang Carbon,” he stressed, “eh, nu'ng Carbon, parents na sila, eh! They were starting families. May burdens na, eh.”

As for the group's dissolution? Well, all good things come to an end. “People started having their own lives. The fans had their lives to live also, so they stopped their dependence on the 'Heads.” On a more positive note, he added, his brows meeting midway in the depth of his forehead, the memories battling for room in the producer's restless mind, “Music was never a burden to them.”

Practice Makes Perfect: The Eraserheads Rehearsals

http://www.eheadscountdown.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/buddybass.jpg

There has been a great online brouhaha about Eraserheads rehearsals lately. We’d say the excitement would be completely warranted since these sessions are about as rare as a polar bear directing traffic on Paseo de Roxas.

Gang Badoy wrote about the band’s first rehearsal in a recent Inquirer lifestyle article. Apparently she was unsure at first what to make of the import of the event that she had to go on her Multiply blog to solicit opinions on how to craft her article.

GMA7 ran clips it deemed to be “exclusive” about the self-same rehearsal. And here are the video clips online to prove it.

Pupil manager Day Cabuhat was in the studio and posted her own photos of the event on her Multiply photo album. Between Gang, the video camera crew, and Day, it appears that the rehearsal came off pretty well documented.

So how many rehearsals does it take before the band gets it right before an audience of 100,000 people? Those readers who have been part of some musical group or band at one time in their life might be thinking of intense practice sessions, taking place weekly, several times a week, or even daily. When the legendary band The Police got together to rehearse for their reunion tour, the rehearsals took three months.

In the case of the Eraserheads - it takes just … 2 to 3 rehearsals… to get it down pat. This was the case for the last Reunion concert as well, and for those who saw the gig live or on DVD, the band didn’t do too shabby as far as musicianship went. Maybe they played a tad faster since Raymund was excited and didn’t play to a click track. But all the notes still managed to fall into the right places.

Raymund had hinted as much during the Italianni’s presscon. Two to three rehearsals would be scheduled, he said, together with session multi-instrumentalist Jazz Nicolas.

But as it turns out Jazz wasn’t even in the first rehearsal, having had some prior commitment to attend to.

At a recent video shoot, we asked Buddy about the practice session, and he didn’t really seem bothered that Jazz wasn’t there. All the musicians learn their parts on their own, and just get together to run through the songs.

The first rehearsal, according to Buddy, involves just making sure that everyone remembers the chords and the breaks, the intros and the endings that the band worked out over their live sets during the frantic touring that took place eight years ago. Subsequent rehearsals allow the band to work new arrangements if needed.

But for the most part, the band is going to play it straight with minimal changes. There’s no Bandleader or MD calling the shots - they work out the arrangements together.

About the only change, says Buddy, is the rhythm section needs to support the singer more. Owing to Ely’s health condition they have to make sure the parts don’t tire or over exert the guy, to allow him to last the two sets laid out for the gig. So the arrangements might have to be tweaked ever so slightly.

With one down, that leaves just two rehearsals to go. Maybe there’s still room for surprises.

I’ve Been Wanting to Take You There

AN EXCLUSIVE ACCOUNT OF A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE MOMENTARILY-REUNITED ERASERHEADS [PART 1 OF 2 PARTS]

by Aldus Santos

Flanked by huge freight crates on both ends of the street, the stretch that boxes Twenty-First and Railroad streets at the Port Area in Manila is a picture of wasteland. The structures are in varying degrees of collapse, and the grime and soot almost creep up like they were alive. Today, however, it becomes something of a gold-ridden El Dorado. Two pairs of tall steel poles are holding up unforgivingly opaque black cloths that would shield the proceedings of the day. The onlookers are unruffled, though. Everyone—from street vendors to child beggars to stray skaters—is trying to pull off his own little Peeping Tom. Even ant-tiny glimpses of the four stars being shot will get them through the day, it seems. Hustling and bustling are the order of the day: sweaty guys with clipboards, shapely girls with makeup kits, frenetic video crew people, busy band management people. “Walang malungkot!” the guy who is probably the video director is heard through the speakers. “Pick up the energy, people!”

The four guys who are at the dead center of the frenzy remain patient despite the ceaseless repetition. When the Eraserheads signed up to do another reunion show, they might have been expecting all of this anyway. Drummer Raymund Marasigan, clad in a brown leather jacket under the scorching Sunday afternoon sun, his eyes hidden behind a pair of shades—as with the rest of the band—agrees, “Mas less tense—alam na naman namin 'yung ine-expect namin sa isa't isa, so alam din namin 'yung i-e-expect namin sa fans, alam din namin 'yung i-e-expect namin sa press, so mas under control ngayon the second time around. Nu'ng una, parang, lahat kami uneasy at kinakabahan. At least, ngayon, may certain expectations na.” He takes off his jacket and throws it towards the curb, and he immediately runs to join the skater kids who have just begun to converge at the street corner. “Pare, 'wag mo kukunan, ha—sesemplang ako,” he gestures towards me and my photographer as he gets on his board. After about two to three trial runs, he consults with the kids, like how a humble newbie is wont to do. When his drumkit was vacated, guitarist Marcus Adoro sits down on the drummer's chair and tries a few rolls and passes. Adoro, it seems, is the kind of guy who is wont to try everything, twice. After drumming, he jumps up on his feet and picks up his own skateboard, joining Marasigan and the rest of the trasher pack. “Skateboard naman! Bawal mag-surf, eh; bawal daw ang contact sports, at bawal ang—ano ba 'yun?—extreme sports,” he shares with this author in code. Surfing, the man's other love apart from guitar-based rock 'n' roll, should be momentarily put on hold, it seems, for safety reasons. There is a huge show, after all, that needs to be played. The guitarist is also bent on exercising on the days leading to the big gig. “So, ganu'n pa din; magsisimula uli akong mag-jogging. 'Di pa kasi ako nakakabili ng brief, eh!” we laugh in unison. He then shares of the upcoming second show, “Nagbitaw agad si Raymund ng [salita] na kailangang ituloy ['yung gig], eh, pati si Ely. It's just a matter of paghahanap ng tamang tao ulit.”

http://www.pulse.ph/images/articles/marcus_adoro.jpg

Singer-guitarist Ely Buendia changes into a black t-shirt when the video shoot is called to break for lunch. He walks back to his trailer-tent, whose door is modestly felt-penned with an unsuspecting “E.” “It’s kind of refreshing,” he tells me as we both longingly survey other people's plates to see what's for lunch. “It wasn’t as crazy as the actual height of the E-heads. In comparison, talagang mellower siya. Pero, at least, now, we know how to handle that kind of stuff. Ako, personally, mas komportable na ‘ko sa papel ng E-heads sa popular culture,” he goes on, adding, “I can enjoy the playing now, much, much better than I did nu’ng active pa [‘yung banda].” Buddy Zabala walks in and says hi. “You guys should eat; ang sarap ng pagkain,” he says. Ely smiles his refusal. I walk towards the door marked as “B,” whose inhabitant just trudged away a few seconds ago. “That's what you do when you have unfinished business: as soon as you're ready, you get back on that horse, and then you go on with the set,” the bassist opens, gesturing once more to the food, and continuing, “It's not just a continuation—it's not the 'second half'—but it will put a period on that whole phrase. Ang haba na nu'ng phrase, eh; we were supposed to make a statement [in the form of] a concert, 'di ba? It was last year—August thirtieth—and, now, napakahabang ellipsis [na]! So, finally, we can put a period on things and move on.”

http://www.pulse.ph/images/articles/ely_buendia.jpg

In the thick of Zabala's metaphorizing of their ordeal using punctuation marks, this author's phone rings. Ely Buendia is on the other line, saying, “O, ano? Tara!” “Saan?” I ask. “Du'n sa mga gitara; 'di ba sasama ka?” the frontman reminds me of the pre-planned trip. “Oo!” Profuse apologies to Zabala, and then, bumping into Adoro as I step out of “B”'s tent, he says, “Turn ko na [sa shoot], eh. Ihanap niyo na lang ako ng mga weird na gitara!” “Okay, sige, pare,” I say. I step into Ely's van, and he starts staring at the wares being sold on the streets of the port. “Uy, bike, o!” he says excitedly. “Parang gusto ko ng bike,” he mumbles almost incomprehensibly to himself. He refocuses and tells me he's out to look for maybe a Fender Rhodes or a Gibson Les Paul (or reasonable copies thereof). A minor problem for the singer is walking these streets, though. His 'disguise' for the afternoon's trip to the second-hand guitar shops includes shades and a hat—and something tells me it's not going to be very effective. As soon as he steps off the vehicle, piercing shrieks of “Si Ely Buendia!” and “Eraserheads!” start to fill the midday air. Just a few moments ago before the short lunch trip, I asked him if it's accurate to say that, at some point, all four of them have been quite irritated about 'Headsmania. “That is the most accurate assessment I've ever heard!” he says kiddingly, appending, “The only feedback you'd get most of the time when you are, you know, in a successful place, is negative feedback, 'di ba? And, for a while there, I was lashing out at the fans din, kasi I had this impression [that] the fans we're, like, anti-Diane, anti-Pupil, anti-everything that I did after the E-heads.” He paused to reconsider and qualified, in a much more serene tone, “Pero, when the reunion happened, and when I saw different types of people [there] from all ages, all classes, na-realize ko rin na I was, like, narrowing the demographic. 'Yun talaga 'yun, eh. I mean, I had to react. For me, that was crazy. The height of the craziness is, I was separated from the band, and, at the same time, I was in the band—parang, nagkaroon ng identity crisis, eh.”

http://www.pulse.ph/images/articles/buddy_zabala.jpg

The trip would be abruptly cut short as the singer gets a phone call asking him back onset. We would pull into the location once again to the sight of Marasigan and Adoro leaping on and off their respective skateboards. “May sorpresa kaming hinanda [para] sa kanila. Sa tingin ko, magugustuhan nila. May mga gimmicks kaming gagawin. 'Gimmicks' ba tawag du'n? Basta, mga part ng show na pampa-kwela,” Adoro would mischievously impart, and he would add in jest, “Magbabasag kami ng ref, 'tsaka TV, 'tsaka camera—'yun ang bago, eh—magbabasag kami ng camera.” I sprint alongside Marasigan, recorder in hand, as he runs back to the set, asking him how he feels about being actively involved in the 'Heads again, despite having active musical pursuits. “All I have to do is show up and play. Hindi naman kami showbiz, eh. Masarap, mas pansinin ka, kasi 'Heads ka uli, pero kasama rin 'yun sa pag-sign-up mo as 'Heads. 'Pag Sandwich ako, 'di naman ako pinapakialaman ng tao sa mall, eh. Pero, 'pag 'Heads [ako], parang may lisensiya sila na [magtanong], 'Uy, kailan 'yung concert?' Kasali 'yun, 'di ba?” he half-asks, with a smile.

Curious Cases

http://jessicarulestheuniverse.com/2009/03/04/curious-cases/

People holding video cameras. People toting boom mikes. The studio is full of journalists and filmmakers. They’re documenting rehearsals for the Eraserheads concert on Saturday, March 7.

This is the last one. The band is not getting back together. Saturday’s show is take two of the reunion concert last year that was interrupted when Ely faded out during the intermission. If you’re a fan, here’s your chance at closure.

Marcus Adoro looks exactly the same. The only movie-worthy episode in my band career starred Marcus and a small piece of paper.

http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/apnd808/marcus.jpg

Ely Buendia with filmmaker Roxlee. Naturally Ely looks younger than he did in the Nineties when the Eheads were playing together. The ticker problem forced him into a change of lifestyle, a healthy diet, tons of vitamins.

http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/apnd808/ely.jpg

But how do you account for the youthfulness of Raymund Marasigan?

http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/apnd808/raims.jpg

Or the fact that Buddy Zabala circa 2009 looks like Buddy Zabala, library science major circa 1992?

http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/apnd808/buddy.jpg

“How can you look younger than you did in 1998?” I asked them. “Is being apart your beauty secret?” They laughed.

Maybe if I’d had cats in 1997 I might’ve lasted more than four months as band manager. Koosi adopted me in 1999. She still looks like a large kitten.

Unstrung Heroes
by Eraserheads & Francis M.

My friend and I went to war
We came from afar
We saw the soldiers die
We saw the children cry
Across the raging seas
We came to fight for peace
Our war was just a dream
The blood is on the screen

Chorus:
From a war we came
From a war we march with glory
From a war we say heyhey
From a war we say heyhey
When the wounds are healed and the war is through were all be dying just the same
When the wounds are healed and the war is through were all be dying just the same

He rose a green red eyes
But we really felt like trash
The more deserving ones
Are lying beneath the ground
The memories haunting me
We’ll last eternally
I'm crying in my rage
Our useless war was waste

From a war we came
From a war we march with glory
From a war we say heyhey
From a war we say heyhey
When the wounds are healed and the war is through were all be dying just the same
When the wounds are healed and the war is through were all be dying just the same

You can tag along
You can tag along
You can tag along
You can tag along
You can tag along
You can tag along
You can tag along
You can tag along

Be strong enough
Be strong enough
Be strong enough
Be strong enough

Rapper Francis Magalona passes away

By Gerry Plaza
INQUIRER.net
First Posted 12:44:00 03/06/2009

MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE 5) Rapper-TV host Francis Magalona died Friday at the Medical City in Pasig City, his co-hosts at the GMA Network’s noontime show “Eat Bulaga” said. He was 44.

Magalona succumbed to multiple organ failure “secondary to severe sepsis and secondary to pneumonia,” according to a doctor who was not authorized to talk to media.

He passed away at 12 noon, said Philippine Daily Inquirer sources.

The acclaimed rapper-musician was rushed to the Medical City on Thursday night, Inquirer sources said. He was “intubated” upon admission and placed in the Intensive Care Unit at 3 a.m. Friday.

He was described as “toxic” during the early hours of Friday, the Inquirer sources said.

Doctors still managed to administer chemotherapy on Magalona. He expired before a bone marrow transplant could be scheduled, they said.

Magalona had been undergoing several chemotherapy sessions since he was diagnosed with the disease in August last year but was too weak to fight the infection, sources said.

Magalona is the son of popular 1950s movie tandem Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran.

“I don't want a media circus. I want privacy with my family,” Francis said in a phone interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer, after reports of his illness broke out.

“What I'd rather talk about is how to we can solicit blood donations to replace the supply that I have consumed in the hospital,” said Magalona, the father of eight children.

Francis' wife, Pia Arroyo-Magalona, said her husband started exhibiting symptoms in March this year. “It was very gradual, hindi siya biglaang lumabas [it didn't manifest right away].”

Magalona was supposed to perform “Superproxy” with the Eraserheads in the band’s reunion concert, “The Final Set” at the SM Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City on Saturday.

He had been in collaboration with Eraserheads and Pupil frontman Ely Buendia for an album to be released this year.

Telecommunications giant PLDT also scheduled in April a golf tournament fund-raiser for Magalona.

Magalona is survived by his wife Pia, and children Maxene, Saab, Unna, Nicolo, Francis Jr., Elmo, Arkin, and Clara.

With reports from Pocholo Concepcion and Marinel Cruz, Philippine Daily Inquirer

Our man in MOA, Koolitz has done it again and captured yet another intriguing image - from his vantage point across the MOA concert grounds, he has captured the Eraserheads soundcheck on-going as of 6pm on Friday evening.

We’ve labelled the bandmembers in the close-cropped photo above. They’ve assumed the same positions as they did during the 08.30.08 concert.

For the full photo, click this link here.

According to reports from people in the area, the soundcheck had been going on since 3:30pm. Songs played included “Superproxy” and “Magasin”.

Hmmmmmmmmm.........

Remember Ely’s jacket?? Here’s the documentation on how we divided the jacket. hehe. This is to be fair and square to everyone who got involved in this rowdy incident. haha. I have now realized that Levi’s is really good quality. A lot of effort was made to cut the seams dude!!

UBER COOL STORY:

I told my sister that Raymund was signing shirts sa Team Manila in Rockwell. I had to attend to work so sabi ko punta sya, tutal she wasn't able to attend the final set.

I already have a signed copy of the reunion cd by Buddy and Marcus. And I also had the Eraserheads Bananatype EP cassette in my drawer. Papadala ko pa sana yung ibang cassettes ko kaso maghuhukay pa ko sa baul, and kulang na sa oras since mga around 3:30pm na sya umalis.

Did my work, text text dito, ask ng sis ko kung saan sho ng Team Manila, text text, work, work...

Got a call.

"Dami ng tao! Haba ng pila! Napa sign ko yung casette mo! Pati yung cd! Raymund was careful not to damage the cassete, and he was impressed! Old school daw! Sabi nya, Wala nga ako nito eh!"

WHOOPAH!!! :alright:

Anyway, eto na ang pinaka valuable na cassette ko:

eto nabasa ko sa isang blog avid fan talaga ito, dami nailagay na good points sa concert, cant wait for the dvd release

60 Million Good Things about the Eheads Concert

1.Jon was not late and/or did not forget about the concert! He and Malen were already having dinner while Ches and I were just navigating thru One E-Com. Hooray! Hahaha.

2.My free parking slot in One E-Com. What a relief not to have to go thru all those lines getting into the makeshift parking lots and more lines out of them after the concert.

3.The manic fiesta atmosphere in MoA on concert night. I was shocked to see the large crowd lined up around the globe area to watch the Filmfest showbiz parade in December, but that was nothing compared to the sheer density of concert-goers last Saturday. Nothing, I tell you. (GMA News reports that approximately 100,000 people did fill up the venue.) The PAs were blaring Eheads songs nonstop and everywhere you looked you saw people wearing Eheads, Beatles and Francis M shirts. It was like the Eheads fanatics' very own grand Christmas eve party. (And I'm sure SM made a killing in the restos, parking, the concert venue. Bonus! Bonus!)

4.The Eheads shirts everywhere. Jon coveted the one that had Super in front and Proxy at the back (same ones we saw at the August concert), others had The Final Set concert ads. I saw printed in one Buddy Raymund Marcus & Ely, and in another Julie Shirley Toyang and Aling Nena. (I think these two are from Artwork coz there's a similar Beatles design that I got for Ches some years back.) Someone in the crowd was even wearing the same maroon Eheads Manila shirt with the E on the sleeves that Raymund also wore onstage. (I know this is from Team Manila. I should've gone there last week and got us some. Dang. What good is it to be a MoA resident if you're not ready with an Eheads shirt on concert night. All talk and no use - that's so me.)

5.Ches sold the ticket I got for Rhoel for P1000. It was worth P1300. A professional scalper type approached us and offered P500 for it. Duh. (Rhoel got two VIP passes so I told him to just bring a date. I will call Rhoel Mr. VIP from now on. I mean, I may be a VP, but he's The VIP. Rhoel, we're not worthy ...)

6.The old video clips of MTV interviews with the Eheads shown just before the concert started. My favorite was Marcus asking the interviewer “Ano nga ulit yung tanong?” about the same question at least three times. And the question wasn't even beauty-contest mind-boggling like what is the meaning of life, but something corny and easy like to whom do you attribute your success, something like that. (You're the man, Marcus. You will always be the man.)

7.The countdown, in alphabet form this time, from Z to E.

8.The first song, Magasin, and all the pomp and synchronized pyrotechnics and screams that accompanied it. I haven't really thought about it in depth, but I once told Ches Magasin is probably my favorite Eheads song. Not for any profound reason other than my yearning to be the girl that will make Ely mapatingin and matulala and think I'm about to be supermodel of the whole wide universe. (Everyone's entitled to her own illusion, you know...)

9.The four cameras focused on each member and showing what each one is up to on four big screens mounted on top of the stage. Astig.

10.As Ches noted, different intros were used for the songs so that it was hard to recognize them at first. At one point Ely challenged the crowd, “O, name that tune”.

11.Marcus' reggae version and uber cool rendition of Wag Mo Nang Itanong. You could hear everyone giggling as he sang, “Wag mo nang itanong ... di ko sasabihin sa yo”. (People were calling him Ka Freddie, too, on account of his long hair and black hat.) It was like hearing for the first time the song whose lyrics we have long memorized. If my digicam serves me right, this was one of the night's most applauded numbers. I could say this is my favorite part of the night, but then I have so many other favorite parts. Whoever thought of Marcus doing this in the concert – whoever you are, thank you for this brilliant idea.

12.Marcus' shamelessly pink guitar with the giant Hello Kity face. (Dig this, Ate.) So ok, that's it then, that seals the deal for me. I am now definitely leaving my family and house project and career and all that boring stuff behind, and will henceforth be spending the rest of my life stalking Marcus wherever his unruly long hair takes him.

13.Raymund's bring-the-house-down takes on Slo Mo, Alkohol and Insomya. (So maybe it was him singing those latter two songs that I heard at sound check?) I've been secretly begrudging Raymund for his rift with Ely that led to The Split (I mean, I'm sure Ely was also at fault, but I couldn't possibly blame Ely bcoz, hello, he wrote all these songs), but I've been slowly softening up after reading all the nice things he had to say about Ely's songwriting abilities (how the words flowed out of him like fountains, or something like that).

At the concert he was hyper banging drums, standing up to motion what he wanted the crowd to do, running around the stage when it was his turn on the vocals. With Ely, you almost want to tell him to take it slow and easy lest he burn his heart out again, but with Raymund it's rock and roll all the way. (I love you now, Raymund!)

14.Buddy giving in and singing about two lines in Fine Time. Buddy just being Buddy, standing there and playing his part without much fanfare, consistently looking like the one sane guy in the whole group. He strikes me as one of those good, sensible people who perpetually choose to be the better person in every fight. (Go, Buddy!)

15.That any one of the four can take the mic and blow us away. They sing, rap, make magic with their guitars and drums. It's not just Ely who has all the talent. All four of them are accomplished musicians in their own right. Which just goes to show how truly gifted the band is.

16.The updated lyrics to Wag Mo Nang Itanong and Pare Ko (anong others I may have missed from my vantage point). They were even more irreverent than the original ones.

17.Three of my favorite songs played in a row – Back2Me, Trip to Jerusalem and Spoliarium. I like the Eheads' Big Guns – Ang Huling El Bimbo, Pare Ko, Ligaya, etc. - as much as the next guy, but it's really the lesser known ones I prefer (even if Back2Me is too silly, and I could never seem to memorize the lyrics to Trip to Jerusalem, and I still don't understand the message of Spoliarium nor figure out what the title has got to do with the whole song).

18.The quiet, almost solemn version of Alapaap, and Ely's deathly serious expression the whole time he was singing it. The way the band played it that night, it sounded like the last song someone will sing before jumping off a cliff, like a dirge you play in a tragic funeral. When they sang it to open the August concert, it was loud and wild and perfect in every way. This time, it had an altogether different and profound effect. It was hair-raising.

19.That - if I recall correctly - the only songs they repeated from the August concert were Alapaap, Kailan and Wag Mo Nang Itanong. (Minus the three they sang in overtime [see no. 26 below], which were all in the first – and only – set in August.) Just proves how deep the Eheads musical treasure trove is.

20.The tribute to Francis M. Before launching into Superproxy, Ely exhorted the crowd to chant Francis' name, and 100,000 voices responded (with some raising their clenched fists). The band also played the chorus to Kaleidoscope. (What a loss Francis M is. I can name 60 million other showbiz personalities who should have gone instead of him.)

21.Ely looking healthy and happy. He looked visibly plumper than in the August concert, and more at ease with the crowd too. In August, he uttered maybe a grand total of three or four phrases, but this time he gamely responded to the chants. At one point he even said (to an apparently male fan who professed his love), “I love you, too, pare”. And to the shouts of “Hubad!” (during one of the frequent shirt changes) and walang-kamatayang “Group hug!”, he replied, “Kayo muna. Ang babait nyo”. At various points he'd order the crowd, “Sing!”. (No need to tell us, Ely. We've been singing along the whole time.) He also ordered, “Talon na!”, and the ground shook. He threw his black jacket, guitar pick and shoes to the crowd, he rapped what was supposed to be Francis M's special participation in Superproxy – can Ely ever do any wrong?

22.The Manila Bay breeze literally giving us a breath of fresh air. There was none of this in The Fort in August. And while I'm at it, let me also mention the perfect weather in both concerts. I don't think there was any Plan B at all in case it rained. We'd all probably just have to stand there and wait for pneumonia to strike us dead as we sang along and screamed in the rain.

23.Everyone singing along to every song, just like in the August concert. It's a testament to the Eheads' magic that thousands of otherwise perfectly sensible people like us who lead otherwise predictably boring lives have willingly turned into zombies who automatically mouth the words to all their songs. I mean, I can understand why some of their songs like Minsan or With A Smile or Pare Ko ended up as big hits – everyone can relate to the universal theme of lost friendship, abiding love, romantic frustrations, and all that drama. But how to explain the vast popularity of Julie Tearjerky? (What kind of a decent girl swallows everything that's round, anyway?) How to explain Superproxy which encourages ... uh ... the availment of fleeting pleasures for a fee? How to explain a ditty about one's beloved kama and malupit na unan for gosh sakes? No other way to explain it but magic.

24.The last number in the official set list. Ang Huling El Bimbo. Complete with like a 5-minute synchronized fireworks show at the general admission area, confetti shower on stage, Ely burning down a piano filled with stickers. (Ches and Jervin think it's the piano in the Sticker Happy cover; I think it could've been any piano with stickers.) So many amazing things happening all at the same time that a poor girl with only one pair of eyes doesn't know where to look anymore. What a bombastic way to end the concert. Whew. Wow.

25.The almost-group hug after the last number and after Ely said, “We are The Eraserheads. Thank you. Good night”, and the rest of the band joined him in front and they put their arms on each other's shoulders. (Awww. You guys break my heart and make me cry all the time ...)

26.And just when we thought it was really, finally over and were already heading for the exit, Ely went back onstage and called on the rest of his troops to re-group and sing “three for the road”. The crowd went wild. It was like one of those movies where the credits have finished rolling and then you find out there's just one more scene at the very, very end.

A lot of people had already gone out, and I know someone in the office who didn't go back inside anymore bcoz apparently it became sheer pandemonium at the entrance when they heard Ely on the mic again (Rhoel said the same thing too but at least he was able to go back). So the lucky lot of us who were still inside were able to rush forward until some guys toppled over the boundaries separating us from the VIP section and then we were at the VIP section and the Eheads were playing Ligaya and Sembreak and Toyang! Waaaah! Jon, Malen, Ches and I couldn't believe our luck and were screaming at each other's faces!

27.We saw this stall selling drinks on our way out. It bore the name – what else – Tindahan ni Aling Nena.

Oh, there were the bummers too like the MTV VJs doing this long spiel and promoting all the upcoming MTV gigs and prolonging our wait for the concert to get going. (Hello, we paid to be enchanted by the Eheads, not to be dazzled by Anne Curtis' legs. And why keep showing clips of Rihanna and Chris Brown together? Didn't he only very recently almost kill the girl? Duh.) And there was Tim Yap bungling the lyrics to Toyang. (Boo. Shame on you.) And some of the kids who liveblogged the concert for Inquirer.net, who couldn't even differentiate Raymund from Jazz Nicholas nor know the proper title to Poorman's Grave much less be expected to appreciate the impact of the event to the whole lot of us bcoz all they ever seemed to write about was the celebrities they spotted in the crowd. (Whodahell cares about all these shallow showbiz people? I don't expect everyone writing about the Eheads to know, for example, that Superproxy is spelled as one word, among other strictly fanatic stuff, but at the very least do your homework. Especially if you're getting paid for it. Oh Inquirer, you could've done so much better with these annoying livebloggers.)

But it's easy to ignore and forget these minor mishaps in light of the 60 million good things that happened that night.

I read from Raymund's website that even at the rehearsals Ely already talked about doing an extension “if the crowd behaved”. What can I say? The placard help up by one group in the crowd says it all: Thank you, Eheads. Thank you for the bonus extension and for doing this concert in the first place and giving us the time of our lives. Thank you for the August concert and for your 60 million beautiful, wonderful songs. And also allow me to add: We love you, Eheads.

If I never see another concert again for the rest of my life, I'd die happy.
