Reading books certainly was very important to Abdul Kassam Ismael, a Grand Vizier of Persia in the tenth century. Four hundred camels carried his library, consisting of about 117,000 volumes, wherever he went. Approximately 1300 years before Abdul was born, the Library of Alexandria was founded. At its peak the Library probably stored from 400,000 to 700,000 scrolls. Nowadays, The United States Library of Congress in Washington D.C. is considered the largest library in the world. It holds over 118 million items which require more than 500 miles of shelving.
