“ The Greatest Places begins by noting that Earth is "the most diverse planet in the solar system," and impressive computer-generated graphics depict the very early history of the planet, showing vividly how geological events formed the continents. Near the end of the film the narrator notes that "life is a reflection of the landscape." And the breathtaking film shot in these remote but magnificent locales does demonstrate beautifully the awesome diversity of both landscape and life on Earth.

GREENLAND - Harsh, foreboding and almost completely buried beneath a cap of permanent ice and snow. Greenland is the world's largest island. It is estimated that some 10,000 to 15,000 icebergs are calved by Greenland's glaciers each year.

You�ll dive down to the mysterious deep reefs of The Twilight Zone, a place no one else has ever been. But sadly, you�ll also swim through vast stretches of bleached coral boneyards, and learn with the Halls how our actions may cause these devastating results.

Along their journey the Halls meet scientists and conservationists working to understand and save the reefs. In Fiji, Rusi Vulakoro guides Howard and Michele to the beautifully pristine and mysteriously damaged reefs of his country. They also dive with world-renowned ocean advocate Jean-Michel Cousteau who feels at home in the world beneath the waves. Howard and his team then dive to a dangerous 350 feet in search of deep ocean corals. For this most risky part of the trip, Howard is joined by Richard Pyle, a deep-sea ichthyologist (a self-described �fish nerd.�) Pyle knows that thousands of reef species are still unknown to science. Seeking them out is an urgent conservation priority, but it means diving to a realm seldom visited: The Twilight Zone, never before filmed in 15/70 large format .

In Tahiti, the Halls join a local chapter of Reef Check, an international organization of divers who help study local coral resources. Finally, in Rangiroa Howard searches for the huge schools of sharks known to live there. These sharks are one of the top predators, and if they still swim the waters of Rangiroa, that�s a good sign for the health of the whole ecosystem. They don�t find just a few, they find 300, all at once: a happy, but slightly unnerving end to their journey!

“ “Bears” takes the viewer into the wilds of many areas of the world to get up-close views of these majestic animals. Like most IMAX films, there is a (fairly seamless) mix of both wild and captive animals; the captive animals are used to get shots that would simply be impossible or unsafe to obtain using wild animals in their habitats. The “making of” featurette very clearly explains this process, and it works well in most IMAX films. There were a few times when it was apparent that the black bears being used were “performing,” but it was not a huge distraction from the film.

“ Some people believe that the laws of physics don?t apply in the Bermuda Triangle and it is one of only two places in the world where a compass won?t point to true, magnetic north.

Over the years, hundreds of ships and planes have gone missing in the area of
the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Fort Lauderdale. One of the most famous disappearances occurred in December 1945, when Flight 19, consisting of five US Navy bombers, vanished while on a training exercise.

One explanation for the mysterious disappearance of entire ships could be large pockets of gas which are common on the sea bed in the area. When the gas rises to the surface they dissolve in the water, decreasing the buoyancy of ships and causing them to sink. ”

If the scholarly tone and historical depth of Cosmos made that science miniseries akin to National Geographic magazine, then Hyperspace is like the National Enquirer. Each episode centers around a dramatic question (Will asteroids destroy the Earth? Could a black hole suck up our sun?) that is examined with slick computer-generated eye candy but fairly shallow content--for example, one episode argues that human beings need to colonize other planets because the sun will one day expand and burn the Earth to a cinder, but never mentions that the expansion of the sun won't happen for millions of years.


Still, Hyperspace does present a variety of exciting ideas and may prompt viewers to learn more. The graphics are beautiful, host Sam Neill projects an engaging intelligence, and you have to love a television show that treats scientists like rock stars. Young science fiction fans will enjoy it enormously.

Spencer Wells, a leading geneticist and National Geographic Explorer-In-Residence, is setting out on a quest to discover if there was an "Adam" from whom all humans are descended.
Wells uses the latest in DNA testing technology to take us on an extraordinary journey across the globe as he traces humanity's family tree. Join astronaut John Herrington for a behind-the-scenes look at NASA's final mission to repair the most famous telescope in the world, the Hubble Telescope. After the telescope suffered a massive malfunction in September 2008, NASA made multiple attempts to fix it without success. Last May 12, 2009, NASA made one final attempt, and NGC had rare access to the preparations and the actual launch.

HUBBLE HISTORY
The astronauts of Servicing Mission 4 are preparing for a final trip to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. With its state-of-the-art technology, Hubble has captured the deepest and most comprehensive images of the universe. This final mission will ensure the full functionality of the telescope, which has given so much to science, well into the next decade.

HUBBLE DISCOVERIES
* The Hubble is responsible for helping scientists figure out the age of our universe: between 13 and 14 billion years.
* Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) is its most powerful, able to conduct broad surveys of the universe. It broke down in 2007, and part of SM4’s mission is to attempt to repair it.
* By photographing supernovas, Hubble aided scientists in discovering ‘dark energy.’ A mysterious, but constant, force in the universe, dark energy pushes galaxies away from each other, accelerating the expansion of the universe and working in opposition to gravity.
* Outside our solar system, scientists have discovered other planets, called extrasolar planets. Using Hubble’s technology, they were able to measure the chemical makeup of an extarsolar planet the size of Jupiter.
* Planetary nebulae are gas clouds which are formed by dying stars. Hubble has helped scientists to confirm that these nebulae are like snowflakes, in that no two are exactly alike.

SPACE CENTERS
* The Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center stands 525 feet tall—over 200 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty.
* Contained in the Vehicle Assembly Building is a mobile launcher platform, on which space shuttles are transported to launch pads. Alone, the platform weighs 9.25 million pounds. Once a shuttle and all necessary launching materials are in place, the platform is referred to as “stacked,” and it weighs over 12 million pounds.

* Hubble was launched in 1990 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery during mission STS-31.
* Since the launch of the telescope, there have been several missions sent to repair and upgrade it. It is planned that SM4 will be the last.
* The Hubble telescope moves at a speed of about five miles per second. At this speed, a trip from New York City to Los Angeles would take only 10 minutes. Hubble completes one full orbit of Earth every 97 minutes.
* Hubble’s orbit is 353 miles above the surface of the Earth, well beyond the distortion-causing atmosphere. This is why the images it gathers are so clear and detailed.

Tagish Lake meteorite

The Tagish Lake meteorite impacted the Earth on January 18, 2000; the reported sighting in the Tagish Lake area in the Yukon Territory and northern British Columbia, Canada was followed-up by gathering more than 500 fragments of the meteorite, collected upon the lake's frozen surface. Post-event atmospheric photographs, also yielded the meteor trajectory. Most of the stony, carbonaceous fragments landed on the Taku Arm of the lake, becoming encased in ice as they entered the lake's frozen surface. As the meteorite fell to Earth, it set off a wide array of satellite sensors, as well as seismographs.

Analyses have shown that they are of a primitive age, containing unchanged stellar dust granules that may have been part of the cloud of material that created our solar system and Sun. The meteorite has proven to have come from the outer limits of the asteroid belt in our solar system. The Tagish Lake meteorite, before it impacted, was estimated at 4 metres in diameter and 56 tonnes in weight. However, when the fragments of the massive lump of rock were found, only 1.3 tonnes remained, meaning that around 97% of the meteorite had vaporised on its descent, during which the meteor finally exploded with around 1.7 kilotons of energy. Of these 1.3 tonnes of fragmented rock, only 0.1% was found and collected.

Stromatolites

Stromatolites were much more abundant on the planet in Precambrian (Pre-Cambrian) times.Prior to 2.4 billion years ago, the earth's atmosphere was rich in carbon dioxide. However, the Precambrian air lacked the oxygen that sustains the complex multicellular life that has evolved since the "Cambrian explosion" 540 million years ago. Stromatolites in the fossil record decline sharply in both diversity and number during the late Proterozoic eon, although they are present, but not common, in Paleozoic era strata. Today, stromatolites are quite uncommon in marine environments. As a result, they have become valuable "living fossils."

Modern stromatolites are mostly found in hypersaline lakes and marine lagoons where extreme conditions exclude animal grazing. One such location is Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve, Shark Bay in Western Australia where excellent specimens are today observed. Fresh-water stromatolites can be found in Cuatro Ci�negas, a unique ecosystem in the Mexican desert.

Deep inside the arctic, scientists are experimenting with extreme palaeontology methods to unlock the secrets of polar dinosaurs, and perhaps the key to our own survival on Earth. On Alaska's north slope there are dinosaur bones, lots of them. But they're trapped in an icy tomb - an impenetrable wall of permafrost.
Dinosaurs on Ice follows the journey of two scientists, Dr Tom Rich and Dr Tony Fiorillo, who undertake separate expeditions to the Colville River in Alaska's far north to uncover the dinosaurs' bones and break the ice on a prehistoric world that until now has been unreachable. But the task is not easy. The weather is extreme, the location remote.

Dr Tom Rich from the Museum of Victoria became a leading authority on polar dinosaurs after discovering them in Australia over two decades ago. He wants to build a mine into the Alaskan permafrost to uncover dinosaur bones. Dr Tony Fiorillo from Dallas has been working on the north slope for 10 years, using more traditional methods.

The idea for the dinosaur mine on Alaska's north slope was originally inspired by Dr Tom Rich's success using the same methods on the coast of Australia. For many years palaeontologists and volunteers painstakingly blasted and drilled into the base of a 90 metre high cliff in a remote part of the rugged coast of south eastern Australia - the only dinosaur mine in the world.

03 - Spice Routes and Silk Roads
Documentary about the history of India presented by Michael Wood. In this episode he traces India in the days of the Roman Empire. In Kerala the spice trade opened India to the world, whilst gold and silk bazaars in the ancient city of Madurai were a delight for visiting Greek traders. From the deserts of Turkmenistan Michael travels down the Khyber Pass to Pakistan to discover a forgotten Indian Empire that opened up the Silk Route and at Peshawar built a lost Wonder of the World.

04 - Ages of Gold
Documentary series about the history of India. Presenter Michael Wood seeks out the achievements of the country’s golden age, discovering how India discovered zero, calculated the circumference of the Earth and wrote the world’s first sex guide, the Kama Sutra. In the south, he visits the giant temple of Tanjore and sees traditional bronze casters, working as their ancestors did 1,000 years ago.

05 - The Meeting of Two Oceans
The documentary series about the history of India charts the coming of Islam to the subcontinent and one of the greatest ages of world civilisation: the Mughals. Michael Wood visits Sufi shrines in Old Delhi, desert fortresses in Rajasthan and the cities of Lahore and Agra, where he offers a new theory on the design of the Taj Mahal. He also looks at the life of Akbar, a Muslim emperor who decreed that no one religion could hold the ultimate truth, but whose dream of unity ended in civil war.

06 - Freedom and Liberation
This episode examines the British Raj and India’s struggle for freedom. Wood reveals how in South India a global corporation came to control much of the subcontinent, and explores the magical culture of Lucknow, discovering the enigmatic Briton who helped found the freedom movement. He traces the Amritsar massacre, the rise of Gandhi and Nehru, and the events that led to the Partition of India in 1947.

Your guide is Dr. Anthony A. Goodman, surgeon, professor, novelist, and a superb communicator of medical information. Many Teaching Company customers have already experienced his reassuring bedside manner in his other course, Understanding the Human Body: An Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology. That series covered the normal functioning of the body's organ systems, with glimpses at the more common clinical problems.

Now, Dr. Goodman presents a systematic survey of what can go wrong, why, and how the body itself responds, as well as what doctors can do to intervene. There is no better demonstration of the wondrous intricacy of the body and the everyday miracle of good health.

Hundreds of Medical Examples

In these lectures, Dr. Goodman brings up many subjects you may have wondered about, while also taking you down fascinating paths that will be completely new to you. Among the hundreds of examples he discusses are:

* Grapefruit and medicine: Cells react to many medications as if they were toxins, which is why the medicines work for a short time before being excreted. Some chemicals in grapefruit interfere with this "toxin-recognition" function in some cells, keeping the medicine in the system longer than usual—a dose that may have been normal could become too much.
* The eyelid: If you go to an ophthalmologist for a condition such as conjunctivitis, a corneal abrasion, or an infection, the doctor will have you close your eye and then cover the eyelid with a piece of gauze and adhesive tape to keep it closed. The inside of the eyelid is the world's best dressing. It has never been surpassed.
* Human bite: The flora of the human mouth is extremely toxic anywhere but in the mouth. Therefore, the human bite is one of the most dangerous. The "boxer's fracture"—a broken hand from a blow to the opponent's teeth—must be treated very aggressively if it is contaminated with bacteria from the mouth—even more aggressively than a dog or cat bite.
* Appendicitis: An initial pain near the site of the appendix is more likely to be a kidney stone than appendicitis, which usually begins as pain around the navel due to the way nerves interpret swelling in the intestines. Dr. Goodman describes the distinctive migration of pain as the appendix becomes obstructed, enlarged, and then infected.
* Colon cancer: The tumors that cause most colon cancers are unusual because they develop from benign to malignant in a predictable sequence. Early intervention can remove the precancerous growths, called polyps. "We practically wipe out colon cancers in that population willing to be colonoscoped about every five to ten years or so," observes Dr. Goodman.

Become Familiar with Terms Doctors Use

One of the valuable features of this course is the exposure you will have to medical terminology. Dr. Goodman is generous in his use of technical terms and equally generous in the care he takes to explain them. You will learn the difference between signs and symptoms; when a disease is acute versus chronic; how to distinguish endemic, epidemic, and pandemic; and why the malapropism elephantitis means "inflammation of your elephant," when elephantiasis is the correct term (meaning "appearing like an elephant").

Reminding viewers that medical students are exposed to thousands of new words in their first two years, Dr. Goodman emphasizes that physicians have to understand each other as well as the biology of the body, and that is why a precise, familiar vocabulary is so important. "We'll try to keep these terms in play all the time, and I think you'll find them just a part of your vocabulary as we move along," he says reassuringly.

It's just one of the many ways that Dr. Goodman treats you with collegial respect when introducing you to the body's astonishing, yet natural, mechanisms of healing and self-defense when it faces the assaults and accidents of daily life.

What You Will Learn

Cellular level: After an introductory lecture describing the scope of the course, you begin at the cellular level, exploring the function of cells and the several common forms of injury. This lays the foundation for all that follows.

Inflammation and the immune system: The inflammatory response is the body's most primitive and immediate reaction to most forms of attack. The immune response is slower acting but more highly evolved, and it is tailor-made to each threat, for which it develops a distinct memory.

Infectious diseases: Infectious diseases are humankind's most persistent and deadly perils. They have a wide range of causes, including molecular prions, viruses, bacteria, parasites, and worms. These lectures focus on their prevention and treatment.

Shock: When the body perceives a dire threat it begins an automatic, progressive shutdown of systems in an effort to protect the brain and heart. This ultimately life-saving response is called shock, and yet it can quickly lead to death unless corrective measures are taken.

Cancer: Cancer is a self-inflicted wound caused when the genetic machinery of a cell goes awry. Theses lectures explore the environmental causes of cancer, the specific steps in its molecular biology, and strategies for treating its different forms.

Wound healing: The complex and astounding processes of bodily healing and repair are well illustrated by wound healing—in infections, trauma, and surgical intervention. You may be surprised to learn that no wound has to be closed, and that it is often a bad idea to attempt to close a wound that might be contaminated.

Dr. Goodman's goal is to give you the tools to understand diseases and injuries and the body's reaction to them. Such knowledge is no substitute for seeing your physician; however, now you will be better able to communicate with your doctor, know what questions to ask, and have more clarity regarding your own illness or that of a loved one.

The party begins at KamLoops, the Disneyland of freeride. Axel busts out the Bobcat to build a wall out of natural clay, for some tricks by experts Aaron Chase and champion Paul ""Bass"" Basagoitia. Still, there are no guarantees in this business. Even these masters must face plant a few times before they stomp their landings. Yet that's nothing compared to the nasty biff taken by Kyle Strait, the Superman of mountainbiking. Narrator Robert Redford mentions we should listen to these folks since, as the movie seems to insist, they have some inner peace the rest of civilization does not (represented by sped-up clips of urban life à la Koyaanisqatsi). Certainly their worlds look lavish: the deserts America, the rain forests of Borneo, the rocky shorelines of Alaska, the plains of Africa. As IMAX documentaries go, this is one of the thinnest, and since you lose the impressive vistas from the gigantic IMAX screen (unless you have a monitor the size of a house), it works better as a diversion. Other films have stated this message more effectively and entertainingly.

Stefan goes on a wild emotional and spiritual rollercoaster ride, starting with a teenage girl's bizarre coming-of-age ceremony and ending with the Day of the Dead, a cacophonous cross-cultural festival of the senses during which Mexicans truly believe that their loved ones come back from the dead for three days every year to spend the day with them.

In Oaxaca, he is dressed up as a dead woman and made to dance like a lunatic at the head of a procession as it makes its way through town. He is turned into an emotional wreck at the moment the dead return, bursting into tears as Dias de los Muertos makes him experience grief and loss for the first time.

But then in the next breath, the family Stefan is living with teach him to celebrate and laugh at death. They turn his views on their head, allowing him to embrace and conquer his fear of death through an extraordinary sensual onslaught of food, flowers, songs and smells. The sight of the graveyards overflowing with flowers and mescal-drinking revellers is a truly life-changing experience.

Fly with the U.S. Navy's elite Blue Angels demonstration squadron in the breathtaking video The Magic of Flight, which explains the basic principles of what enables airplanes (and birds) to fly, what creates lift, how planes maneuver, how planes land again. Going back to the Wright Brothers' experiments at Kitty Hawk, the documentary explores how the intrepid bicycle makers ruminated on the elements of flight for many an hour before even attempting to assemble their first aircraft. The Blue Angels put into action the discoveries made by the Wright Brothers, as they make their selections, train, and perform.
Pilots push their high-performance fighter planes through difficult but graceful maneuvers for amazed air-show audiences, demonstrating where the state of the art really lies for 21st-century flying. For all the skills of the pilots, however, the most astonishing part of the video would have to be the camera work, with cameras mounted on the planes' bellies, noses, and cockpits to give an up-close view of what the machines are really capable of. Planes fly arm's length apart during maneuvers where the slightest misstep would mean certain catastrophe. The Magic of Flight does indeed go a long way toward capturing the wonder of flying, with spectacular camera work, editing, and production.

Each individual fig is a infinitesimal microcosm of life: a stage set for birth, sex and death, in which the tiny fig wasp players battle against predators and parasites to fulfill their mission, which is to pollinate a tree whose flowers bloom inside its fruit.
An intimate and unbelievably detailed portrait of the fig wasps and their world is made possible by the patience and skill of two remarkable filmmakers, who employ the magic of ultra-macro photography and high definition cameras to tell a wildlife story which has never been told before. It is one of the most amazing stories in the natural world – a tale of intrigue and drama, set against grand Africa and its’ wildlife.

The film will also explore the implications that deep ocean discoveries may have for our understanding of the emergence of life and our search for its traces elsewhere in the Cosmos. Using the deep-sea diving vehicle known as Alvin, the filmmakers capture footage of some of these underwater ecosystems along with some helpful CGI reconstructions. Ed Harris delivers the narration.
