The day was like any old day.
The sun shown, the people group together and the stress of overdue homework was in the air. And just like any old day, the two were inseparable. Jan and Alex were best friends since, well, ever. Everything that has been thrown at them, they faced holding hands, metaphorically.
They’re like the perfect pair, but unfortunately, that’s all they see in each other, FRIENDS…
The bell rang and the classroom filled immediately.
“Excuse me,” the teacher, walking in and making everyone silent with just one look.
“I know that it’s the first day of class but that doesn’t mean you have to act like there isn’t one right now.”
“Start of a new year and she surprises us with a speech,” Alex said with little chuckle.
“Let me introduce a new student.”
As the teacher said this she opened the door and a girl walked in.
“May I introduce Ms. Anna Ravales.”
“She’s something…” Jan said looking at the awestruck Alex.
“Please sit over there.”
The teacher pointed to the desk beside Alex.
“This must be my lucky day,” Alex said with a big smile.
Right after Anna sat down, Alex slipped a note on her desk which read, “Can I show you around the school at lunch?”
Anna looked at him and nodded her head with a smile.
“She smiled at me,” Alex whispered to Jan, “She likes me… I just know it.”
After the fifth period Alex, Anna and Jan went to the canteen and Jan started the tour.
“This is the canteen, which of course, where we get our food.”
After long strolling, they reached the last place where Jan hasn’t told Anna.
“This is the music room, its funny cuz, one time,” she looked behind her and saw Alex talking to Anna and her laughing. There was something that felt wrong in what Jan saw but she didn’t know why she felt that.
“Uhm… Well that’s it…” Jan said with a plastic smile.
“Oh…” Alex said like nothing happened, “There you go, our whole school.”
“Thanks for showing me Alex, no one was never this nice to me,” Anna said, giving him a soft kiss on the cheek, “You too Jan.”
As Anna climbed the stairs, Alex couldn’t help but smile.
“I told you.” He said to Jan, that big smile still on his face.
When Jan was home, she raced up to bed and tried to sleep everything of her mind. She didn’t even know why she has to do that. Shed looked up at the ceiling and thought about today. “Alex is my friend,” she thought to herself. “We’ve always been friends. So why did I feel what I felt that moment?”
“When he was kissed by Anna… I was supposed to be happy for him. Instead, it felt wrong.”
Jan just looked at the photograph that was framed on her side table. “Could it..? No… But if not, then why..?”
These questions raced on and on in her head. “I shouldn’t. If he’s happy, then I’m happy. I don’t have the right to be jealous anyway… right..?”
Hours made days. Days made weeks. Weeks made months. All those times Jan just sat there looking at the two. The pain, that she didn’t know why she felt it, grew larger by the moment. Was she really falling..? If so, why now, why didn’t it happen before?
“You only see how valuable things are once you lose them…”
The night of the High School Dance came. And the pain was starting to come out. Jan can’t keep hiding the pain she feels so she thought now was the right time.
There she stood waiting for Alex. He said he had something important to say to her.
There he came in. He hugged Jan and the load that Jan lifted, like her problems were given wings to fly away from her.
Then Alex whispered, “She said yes…”
The wings of Jan’s problems melted away and brought her down to the ground deeper as ever. “Wh, what..?”
“She said yes… That girl over there.” Alex said looking at Anna, coming down the stairs.
“C, congratulations…” Anna said, smiling, hiding her pain.
“Hi.” Anna said holding on to Alex’s hand
“Oh, Anna, I’ll meet you in the gym, Jan has something to say to me..”
As Anna walked on Alex looked at Jan’s tearful eyes and asked, “Are you alright..?”
Jan wiped her tears and said, “I’m alright… Go have fun with Anna tonight… I’ve got to go do something…”
“Are you sure you’re alright..?”
“Yes… Now go… Have fun…” Jan said one more time, then left.
Alex, walking to the gym, felt something that he never felt for Jan before. Its like sadness, sorrow but deeper.
“There you are.” Anna said holding drinks. “Why do you look so pale?”
“Nothing…”
“I’ve known for 5 months, and common sense tells me nothing means something.”
“C’mon” Anna held his hand and dragged him to the bleachers.
“What’s the problem..?”Anna asked him frankly.
“I feel something… I feel something so bad, I just can’t explain.”
Anna then smiled subtly and held Alex’s hands. “I know…”
“What..?”
“It doesn’t take a year to know that you’ve always had feelings for Jan. Don’t get me wrong, I love you like I never loved anyone, but I know Jan has feelings for you that I’ve never seen for anyone.”
“I… I…” Alex was speechless.
“But if Jan breaks your heart, I’ll be there…” Anna said with a tear and a smile, “Go… I know it’s the right thing…”
Alex’s feelings were mixed when he was running to see if Jan was still there. He was sad because he was so stupid as not to know the feeling and because Anna was gone in her heart, but he was happy because he hasn’t met anyone who was understanding as Anna and he has a chance to correct maybe the biggest mistake of his life.
“Where’s Jan?” Alex asked the first friend he saw
“I think she went to the music room.”
Alex ran there and when went in the music room, he saw Jan sitting alone, staring at the moon.
“Hey…”
Jan looked behind her, “Hey…”
“What are you doing here..? All alone..?”
“What are YOU doing here..? With me..?”
“I felt something…”
“Hmm… Really...? What about Anna..?”
“She knew all along… She understood, she really understood…”
“So…”
“So…” Grabbing a disc on a desk, “remember..?”
“It took one look…”
Jan stood up and looked at Alex. “What are you doing..?”
“Can I have this dance..?”
Jan just walked toward Alex and Alex held her hands. They just started to dance and smile at each other.
“I don’t know how to say this-”
“I love you.” Jan said closing her eyes.
“I… I…”
Alex just stopped speaking and held Jan’s hand tighter and they kiss.
