Description:
Are you just another AFC ("average frustrated chump") trying to meet an HB ("hot babe")? How would you like to "full-close" with a Penthouse Pet of the Year? The answers, my friend, are in Neil Strauss's entertaining book The Game. Strauss was a self-described chick repellant--complete with large, bumpy nose, small, beady eyes, glasses, balding head, and, worst of all, painful shyness around women. He felt like "half a man." That is, until a book editor asked him to investigate the community of pickup artists. Strauss's life was transformed. He spent two years bedding some fine chiquitas and studying with some of the North America's most suave gents--including the best of them all, the God of the pickup "community," a man named Mystery.

Mystery is an aspiring Toronto magician who charges $2,250 for a weekend pickup workshop. He is not much to look at: a cross between a vampire and a computer geek. But by using high-powered marketing techniques he's turned seduction into an effortless craft--even inventing his own vocabulary. His technique sounds like a car salesman's tip sheet: his main rule is FMAC--find, meet, attract, close. He employs the "three-second rule"--always approach a woman within three seconds of first seeing her in order to avoid getting shy. Other tricks: Intrigue a beautiful woman by pretending to be unaffected by her charm; also, never hit on a woman right away. Start with a disarming, innocent remark, like "Do you think magic spells work?" or "Oh my god, did you see those two girls fighting outside?" And finally, the most important characteristic of the pickup artist--smile.

After two years, Strauss ends up becoming almost as successful as Mystery, but he comes to an important realization. His techniques were actually off-putting to the woman he ended up falling in love with. And they never prepared him for actually having a relationship. After a while, he ran out of one-liners and had to have a real conversation. Still, The Game is a great read that may help some AFCs come out of their shells. --Alex Roslin

'Ubuntu Hacks' consists of a series of pointers on how to perform useful and usually non-trivial tasks ranging from beginner level through to expert. Not surprisingly, this is another lovely addition to the successful 'Hacks' series. As you would expect novice users can get more from the book than experienced users, but there is still likely to be plenty to interest people of any skill level.

This book does not suffer from too broad a topic range, as several from the series do. Since it limits coverage to using the Ubuntu Linux distribution, it reduces the number of topics that are not relevant. It is also a very good source for finding out what else is available, so you gain from not only what is presented directly but will be able to use these to accelerate your own knowledge.

This book highlights one of the problems with the 'Hacks' series. 'Ubuntu Hacks' is noticeably larger than other books I have seen from the series, and while the volume is necessary to cover some of the advanced topics I felt that limiting the book to one hundred hacks made some entries very long indeed.

Overall it is a great book, particularly for those of beginner to intermediate level. You can learn Ubuntu by accident, or you can get a real head start using this book.

Marion A. Brach, a physician with a background in medical research and a deep understanding of mathematics, migrated to finance. She took an interest in real options, which is the field of valuation of choices in the real as opposed to the financial world and in due course produced her book.

Dr. Brach's interest is, at its core, whether X corporation should buy Y corporation or invest a known amount of money in a project. This sort of thing has usually been handled by discounted cash flow analysis. If Y can add a known amount of money to X's business, then the purchase price of Y must not exceed the discounted cash flow it brings in.

What's wrong with discounted cash flow is that it ignores risk, as Dr. Brach points out.That's a huge gap and one which real options can fix.

Her discussion of how one keeps straight which chick came from which mating--which involves the injection of food dyes into fertilized eggs, and carefully marking the webbings of feet--is downright ingenious. When it comes time to release a new version of Mac OS X, Apple realizes that most users don’t buy upgrades just because they’re available. That’s why Apple touts the fact that Leopard includes more than 300 new features—and offers a Web site outlining each one (macworld.com/3233).
Will any one user take advantage of every one of the 300-plus features on Apple’s list? Not likely. But that’s not really the point. For Leopard to be worth its $129 cover price, you need only find the small subset of those 300 features that appeals to you. For example, most users won’t care that you can now view the OS in Russian and Polish—but speakers of Russian and Polish sure will. And almost nobody would buy Leopard just for AutoFS, a new technology that prevents the Finder from spinning its wheels when it loses contact with a remote file server—but those in the know will certainly include it on a list of reasons to upgrade. In the case of Leopard, much of Apple’s marketing power has focused on one feature: Time Machine. And really, I can’t argue. Time Machine manages to make backing up your data slightly less boring, and I mean that as a huge compliment.
In fact, Time Machine’s file-rollback system has already begun to change the way I interact with my files. Within three days of using Time Machine, I discovered that I was tossing items in the Trash more often, confident that if I really needed one of them, I could retrieve it from my backup.
Another game-changing feature of Leopard is Quick Look, which lets you peer into files to see their contents directly from the Finder. It’s one of those simple features that will make most Mac users more productive—that is, as soon as we unlearn that reflexive double-click and replace it with a quick tap of the spacebar.
And in my mind, one of the most impressive features of Leopard is one that Apple really isn’t touting—mostly because it’s kind of embarrassing. The marquee feature of Tiger, 36 long months ago, was Spotlight, the technology that let you find anything on your Mac just by typing a few words in a search box. But that first version of Spotlight was inflexible and slow. Apple has massively upgraded Spotlight in Leopard—and for the better. It’s more flexible and a lot faster. Spotlight might have ended up being a bit of a disappointment in Tiger, but it has really come into its own in Leopard. But the list doesn’t stop there. In addition to these big-name features, Apple has also included updates to Mail, iCal, iChat, and numerous other built-in programs that many Mac users rely on every day. Aikido is a modern Budo founded by Morihei Ueshiba after he had mastered many traditional Japanese martial arts and engaged in profound spiritual training. Morihei maintained, "In true Budo, there is no enemy. True Budo is the function of love. A martial art solely concerned with winning and losing is not true Budo. Victory is to thoroughly rid the mind of contention and conflict within ourselves."

This book was composed by Kisshomaru Ueshiba, Morihei’s son and successor as the Second Aikido Doshu (the person who embodies the spirit of Aikido as inherited from the founder and is its living symbol). Dr Nunn has produced a first-rate book, with all sorts of practical advice. It's really for fairly strong club players upwards, and I think most players below GM would learn some things. A few examples:

DAUT -- don't analyse unnecessary tactics. Especially cogent from an author who's won fierce tactical slugfests with some of the world's best.

Be sceptical of books advocating offbeat openings, and learn to decipher their "codes". You'll never have to fear the Latvian Gambit or M?ller attack again! Instead, study proper openings like the R?y L?pez that will serve you for years to come.

Calculation tricks -- don't be too worried about Kotov's candidate move theory. But learn about safety nets, i.e. a way to bail out with say perpetual check if it turns out not to be as good as you thought.

Avoid time trouble -- you might get a 0.1 pawn advantage more by taking all that extra time, but the piece hung in time trouble will more than make up for this.

Some practical endgame lessons. Most people will benefit greatly by knowing how to save R v R+B, and the "second rank defence" is not found in Keres' "Practical Chess Endings". Some very useful tips in Q and R endings too.
