Shotgun One Synopsis

A military thriller. Vostok Station, the coldest recorded place on earth, a Russian research facility deep in the Antarctic interior that sits on a dome of ice over 12,000 feet deep. A place unique not just because of record cold temperatures but because of what lies beneath the ice, Lake Vostok, a fluid mass larger than Lake Ontario, nearly 2000 feet deep. Renegade Russian and Chinese scientists drill through the ice into the lake, discovering a secret that has been trapped there for millions of years.
Compressed by trillions of tons of ice, the lake water is saturated in oxygen and explosive natural gasses. When exposed to low atmospheres, the water instantly boils into gas. Beneath that mix, the earths crust, stretched by the huge mass of lake and ice, has laid bare the world's largest oil and gas reserve, held in check only by the weight above.
The discovery begins a chain of events that spiral into the biggest massing of military forces seen since the Second World War. And then the unthinkable happens. A blinding flash of light and an enormous electro magnetic pulse rips out from the northeast end of the lake, sealing off Vostok from the rest of the world.
The Russians and Chinese blame the U.S. This creates the stage for a military confrontation to claim the ice. Amidst this, two brothers, Brian and Lance Hamilton find themselves dragged into the unfolding nightmare.
Colonel Brian Hamilton caught in the electro magnetic pulse, then witnesses the annihilation of the Vostok research station from a cruise missile strike and the ignition of the wellhead that begins a count down to dooms day. His escape from the ice centre and pursuing military Spetznaz forces enables him to warn the coalition of the approaching Armageddon.
With the entire Antarctic sealed off to the Australian and US forces, it is up to Squadron Leader Lance Hamilton to devise a strategy that will get him and his Pig, the venerable F111, close enough to extinguish the flame. The burning well head quickly creates a hole over four hundred meters wide which rapidly sinks towards the lake of oil and gas below.

"Within 72 hours, the ice will blow out and the lake will explode. Within minutes, the entire ice dome, over a thousand square kilometres of ice, 5000 feet thick, will collapse, throwing the contents of the lake tens of thousands of meters in the air. This is an extinction event. We will all either burn, suffocate, be killed by the resulting shockwave or drown in the biggest tsunami the earth has experienced since the last big meteor wiped out the dinosaurs. We have 72 hours to put the flame out or we are all very dead!" Dr. Alexander Blake, RosenBridge Foundation.

In a growing conflict and war that debuts weaponry never utilized in battle before, the Russians, Chinese, Australian and US forces, punch it out on the ice and Southern Ocean, each believing they are fighting the just cause. But for all of them, the ticking bomb at the end of the Earth threatens the extinction of all life. Brian and Lance Hamilton find themselves flung together in a desperate last minute attempt to avert a catastrophe of biblical proportions.

Settling Accounts: Return Engagements
Written by Harry Turtledove

Harry Turtledove's remarkable alternative history novels brilliantly remind us of how fragile the thread of time can be, and offer us a world of "what if." Drawing on a magnificent cast of characters that includes soldiers, generals, lovers, spies, and demagogues, Turtledove returns to an epic tale that only he could tell-the story of a North American continent, separated into two bitterly opposed nations, that stands on the verge of exploding once again. In 1914 they called it The Great War, and few could imagine anything worse. For nearly three decades a peace forged in blood and fatigue has held sway in North America. Now, Japan dominates the Pacific, the Russian Tsar rules Alaska, and England, under Winston Churchill, chafes for a return to its former glory. But behind the facade of world order, America is a bomb waiting to go off. Jake Featherston, the megalomaniacal leader of the Confederate States of America, is just the man to light the fuse.

But on a crucial run to deliver troops and precious crystals to a combat hotspot in the Sith's war against the Republic, Korsin and the crew of the mining ship Omen are ambushed by a Jedi starfighter. And when the Sith craft crash-lands, torn and crippled, on a desolate alien planet, the hard-bitten captain finds himself at odds with desperate survivors on the brink of mutiny—and his own vengeful half brother, who's bent on seizing command.

Absence of faith

Description:
In this medical mystery thriller, Doctor Carson Hyll falls asleep and drives into a river and experiences one of the worst nightmares of his life. The young intern is knocked unconscious and has a negative near death experience so real, so frightening that he thinks he died and went to hell.

When others in the highly-religious small town of Ocean Village have similar negative near death experiences and wake up with burnt skin, they believe God has abandoned them.

Matters get worse when a Satanic cult emerges begins to win over the town residents.
Will the heroine, Chantress, stop cult leader Kyle Mabus or will he destroy all known religions in the world?

Bestselling author and psychic Sylvia Browne writes in her book, Prophecy, that, "...our beliefs are the driving force behind our behavior, our opinions, our actions. Without faith, without our beliefs, we're lost."

Written by Naomi Novik
Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors rise to Britain's defense by taking to the skies . . . not aboard aircraft but atop the mighty backs of fighting dragons. When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Capt. Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future-and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France's own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte's boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.

Eight Simple Qigong Exercises for Health

Although thin, this book contained more information than I expected. It talks about what is qi and what is qigong
(including its history), it tells the life story of this set's creator - Marshall Yue Fei, and enumerates the main
qigong purposes (i.e for healing, maintaing health, prolonging life, martial arts and enlightenment). The two main
categories are explained: Wai Dan (External Elixir) and Nei Dan (Internal Elixir). In Taoist terminology, the book
talks about the three treasures: Jing (essence), Qi (energy) and Shen (spirit), which can be nurtured through
Qigong training. In order to succeed, one needs to regulate the body, mind, breath, Qi and spirit - only then the
benefits which one can reap from training will be reaped.
With HMOs, insurance headaches, premiums driven up by the 65 percent of Americans who are overweight, increasing
daily stress, we all could use a magic elixir for energy and increased quality of life. Who better to provide it
than the Chinese, inventors of tai chi chuan, green tea as a curative, and acupuncture?
Qigong, as alternative health expert Dr. Wang Jwing-Ming explains, functions like tai chi chuan or yoga as a way
of maintaining longevity, youth, energy and health. Dr. Yang explains that most practitioners of qigong seek
enlightenment, awareness and health through wai dan (physical tai chi type qigong) or nei dan (meditation).
Once you have read the half of the book devoted to the nature of qigong, like most Westerners, you're itching to
get started. Dr. Yang stresses that qigong is not about fancy moves, but about careful attention. The exercises,
like weight or strength training, require several repetitions. The qigong exercises may seem slow. However, for
those who are sick and tired of being sick and tired, patience will pay off when you choose to set aside 10-20
minutes a day. The accompanying videotape purports to be another great investment in your health. Dr. Yang
skillfully shows us the path to wellness.

Darkfever

Written by Karen Marie Moning
MacKayla Lane's life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she's your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks...until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death-a cryptic message on Mac's cell phone-Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister's killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed-a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae...

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister's death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane-an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women-closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac's true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book-because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands...

manifold time

Written by Stephen Baxter
The year is 2010. More than a century of ecological damage, industrial and technological expansion, and unchecked population growth has left the Earth on the brink of devastation. As the world's governments turn inward, one man dares to envision a bolder, brighter future. That man, Reid Malenfant, has a very different solution to the problems plaguing the planet: the exploration and colonization of space. Now Malenfant gambles the very existence of time on a single desperate throw of the dice. Battling national sabotage and international outcry, as apocalyptic riots sweep the globe, he builds a spacecraft and launches it into deep space. The odds are a trillion to one against him. Or are they?

For Love of Mother

Written by Alan Dean Foster
He was just a freckle-faced, redheaded kid with green eyes and a strangely campelling stare when Mother Mastiff first saw him on the auctioneer's block. One hundred credits and he was hers.

For years the old woman was his only family. She loved him, fed him, taught him everything she knew—even let him keep the deadly flying snake he called Pip.

Then Mother Mastiff mysteriously disappeared and Flinx took Pip to tail her kidnappers. Across the forests and swamps of the winged world called Moth, their only weapons were Pip's venom...and Flinx's unusual Talents.

Weapons of Choice

Written by John Birmingham
"Birmingham...describes military hardware with an exuberance and virtuosity that's positively Clancyesque [and] shows a surprisingly tender touch with his characters, who react to their unexpected time trip with authentic, believable anguish."
--Time Magazine

A military experiment in the year 2021 has thrust an American-led multinational armada back to 1942, right into the middle of the U.S. naval task force speeding toward Midway Atoll and what was to be the most spectacular U.S. triumph of the entire war. Thousands died in the chaos, but the ripples had only begun. For these veterans of Pearl Harbor--led by Admirals Nimitz, Halsey, and Spruance--have never seen a helicopter, or a satellite link, or a nuclear weapon. What happens next is anyone's guess--and anyone's nightmare.

Elric: The Stealer of Souls

Written by Michael Moorcock
"The stories here are the raw heart of Michael Moorcock. They are the spells that first drew me and all the numerous admirers of his work with whom I am acquainted into Moorcock's luminous and captivating web."
--From the Foreword by Alan Moore, creator of V for Vendetta

When Michael Moorcock began chronicling the adventures of the albino sorcerer Elric, last king of decadent Melnibone, and his sentient vampiric sword, Stormbringer, he set out to create a new kind of fantasy adventure, one that broke with tradition and reflected a more up-to-date sophistication of theme and style. The result was a bold and unique antihero who would channel all the violent excesses of the Sixties into one enduring archetype.

Harry Potter - The Tales Of Beedle The Bard

There is no easy way to define the experience of seeing, holding, or reading J.K. Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard, so let's just start with one word: "Whoa." The very fact of its existence (an artifact pulled straight out of a novel) is magical, not to mention the facts that only seven copies exist in all the world and each of the never-before-told tales is handwritten and illustrated by J.K. Rowling herself (and it's quite clear from the first few pages that she has some skill as an artist). Rowling's handwriting is like the familiar scrawl of a favorite aunt--it's not hard to read, but it does require attention--allowing you to take it slow and savor the mystery of each next word.
So how do you review one of the most remarkable tomes you've ever had the pleasure of opening? You just turn each page and allow yourself to be swept away by each story. You soak up the simple tales that read like Aesop's fables and echo the themes of the series; you follow every dip and curve of Rowling's handwriting and revel in every detail that makes the book unique--a slight darkening of a letter here, a place where the writing nearly runs off the page there. You take all that and you try and bring it to life, knowing that you will never be able to do it justice. With that, let's dig in and begin at the beginning, shall we? --Daphne Durham

harry potter deathly hallows

Readers beware. The brilliant, breathtaking conclusion to J.K. Rowling's spellbinding series is not for the faint of heart--such revelations, battles, and betrayals await in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that no fan will make it to the end unscathed. Luckily, Rowling has prepped loyal readers for the end of her series by doling out increasingly dark and dangerous tales of magic and mystery, shot through with lessons about honor and contempt, love and loss, and right and wrong. Fear not, you will find no spoilers in our review--to tell the plot would ruin the journey, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is an odyssey the likes of which Rowling's fans have not yet seen, and are not likely to forget. But we would be remiss if we did not offer one small suggestion before you embark on your final adventure with Harry--bring plenty of tissues.
The heart of Book 7 is a hero's mission--not just in Harry's quest for the Horcruxes, but in his journey from boy to man--and Harry faces more danger than that found in all six books combined, from the direct threat of the Death Eaters and you-know-who, to the subtle perils of losing faith in himself. Attentive readers would do well to remember Dumbledore's warning about making the choice between "what is right and what is easy," and know that Rowling applies the same difficult principle to the conclusion of her series. While fans will find the answers to hotly speculated questions about Dumbledore, Snape, and you-know-who, it is a testament to Rowling's skill as a storyteller that even the most astute and careful reader will be taken by surprise.

A spectacular finish to a phenomenal series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a bittersweet read for fans. The journey is hard, filled with events both tragic and triumphant, the battlefield littered with the bodies of the dearest and despised, but the final chapter is as brilliant and blinding as a phoenix's flame, and fans and skeptics alike will emerge from the confines of the story with full but heavy hearts, giddy and grateful for the experience.

Fairy Tales - A New History 2009

State University of New York Press, | ISBN 978-1-4384-2523-8 | English | PDF | 164 Pages | 1.11 MB

Introduction
Most traditional histories of fairy tales begin with an unlettered country folk that invents fairy tales and then passes them along by word of mouth from generation to generation. Somewhat less frequently, fairy tales have been presented as disintegrations of ancient myth, as the remains of paleolithic beliefs, as fictionalized remnants of elementary planetary observations, or as evidence of universal archetypes. Such explanations have resulted in a sense that fairy tales’ origins are elusive, a sense of elusiveness that has shaped grand narratives of the genre as well as references to fairy tales in books about history, literature (including children’s literature), psychology, and folklore. It has been said so often that the folk invented and disseminated fairy tales that this assumption has become an unquestioned proposition. It may therefore surprise readers that folk invention and transmission of fairy tales has no basis in verifiable fact. Literary analysis undermines it, literary history rejects it,
social history repudiates it, and publishing history (whether of manuscripts or of books) contradicts it.

A rolling tremor passes through the land of Uton signaling a return of long absent magic as well as an ancient evil that accompanies it. Ryson Acumen, purebred delver, senses the changes throughout the land. In his investigations, he learns that legends he considered fables hold more truth than fantasy. The delver encounters elves and learns the Sphere of Ingar, a talisman that captured all magical energies long ago, is free from its tomb in Sanctum Mountain. The Chronicles of Narnia

Journeys to the end of the world, fantastic creatures, and epic battles between good and evil -- what more could any reader ask for in one book? The book that has it all is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, written in 1949 by Clive Staples Lewis. But Lewis did not stop there. Six more books followed, and together they became known as The Chronicles of Narnia.

For the past fifty years, The Chronicles of Narnia have transcended the fantasy genre to become part of the canon of classic literature. Each of the seven books is a masterpiece, drawing the reader into a land where magic meets reality, and the result is a fictional world whose scope has fascinated generations.

This edition presents all seven books -- unabridged -- in one impressive volume. The books are presented here according to Lewis' preferred order, each chapter graced with an illustration by the original artist, Pauline Baynes. Deceptively simple and direct, The Chronicles of Narnia continue to captivate fans with adventures, characters, and truths that speak to readers of all ages, even fifty years after they were first published.

Cautionary Note to the Reader
The principles and techniques presented in this book are your information purposes only.
The reader should not attempt any of the techniques and exercises in this book without the
supervision of a qualified instructor. This is most especially true regarding the principles of Dim
Mak. It is the strong recommendation of the author that you DO NOT attempt to apply the Dim
Mak techniques on another person without a qualified instructor who is experienced in Dim Mak
and revival techniques being present. As always, it is wise to consult your physician before
undertaking any stressful exercise routine.

Foreword For "Chi Kung, Development and Practical Application
in Wing Chun Kung-Fu"
By Erle Montaigue (Master Degree, China)

Having read many books on Wing Chun over my 35 years in the martial arts business, it
is with great pleasure that I now write the foreword for Scott Baker’s book. This book is an
attempt to bring Wing Chun out of the purely physical domain and in to the internal area
including such things as Chi Kung (Qigong) and Dim-Mak. There have been other books that
include Dim-Mak, however, these have been sketchy to say the least. Scott attempts to delve
deeper into the area of point striking, covering acupuncture points and their effects etc. This
book will be a great inclusion in any Wing Chun player’s library.

Healing Back Pain - The Mind-Body Connection

Warner Books | ISBN 0-7595-6193-1 | ENGLISH | PDF | 209 PAGES | 1.10 MB

Introduction
This book is the successor to Mind Over Back Pain, which was published in 1984. It described a medical disorder known as the Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS), which I have had reason to believe is the major cause of the common syndromes of pain involving the neck, shoulders, back, buttocks and limbs. In the years since that first publication I have further developed and clarified my concepts about how to diagnose and treat TMS, hence the necessity for this book. Over the years the increasing incidence of these pain syndromes has created a public health problem of impressive proportions. One continues to see the statistic that somewhere around 80 percent of the population have a history of one of these painful conditions. An article in Forbesmagazine in August 1986 reported that $56 billion are spent annually to deal with the consequences of this ubiquitous medical disorder. It is the first cause of worker absenteeism in this country and ranks second behind respiratory infections as a reason for a doctor visit. All this has happened in the past thirty years. Why? After a few million years of evolution, has the American back suddenly become incompetent? Why are so many people prone to back injury? And why has the medical profession proven so helpless to stem the epidemic? It is this book?s purpose to answer those and many other questions about this widespread problem. The thesis will be advanced that, like all epidemics, this one is the result of medicine?s failure to recognize the nature of the disease, that is, to make an accurate diagnosis. The plague ravaged the world because no one knew anything about bacteriology or epidemiology at the time. It may be hard to believe that highly sophisticated twentieth-century medicine cannot properly identify the cause of something so simple and common as these pain disorders but physicians and medical researchers are, after all, still human and, therefore, not all-knowing and, most important, subject to the enduring weakness of bias. The pertinent bias here is that these
common pain syndromes must be the result of structural abnormalities of the spine or chemically or mechanically induced deficiencies of muscle. Of equal importance is another bias held by conventional medicine that emotions do not induce physiologic change. Experience with TMS contradicts both biases. The disorder is a benign (though painful) physiologic aberration of soft tissue (not the spine), and it is caused by an emotional process. I first appreciated the magnitude of this problem in 1965 when I joined the staff of what is now known as the Howard A. Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University Medical Center as director of outpatient services. It was my first introduction to large numbers of patients with neck, shoulder, back and buttock pain. Conventional medical training had taught me that these pains were primarily due to a variety of structural abnormalities of the spine, most commonly arthritic and disc disorders, or to a vague group of muscle conditions attributed to poor
posture, underexercise, overexertion and the like. Pain in the legs or arms was presumed due to compression (pinching) of nerves. However, it was not at all clear how these abnormalities actually produced the pain.

hoe to lower your cholesterol

Statins, medications that lower levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, are now among the most prescribed drugs in the country (and the world). But medication is only part of the solution: To keep cholesterol under control, maintaining a healthy weight and diet is just as important as taking a daily pill.

The guidelines for treating high cholesterol from the National Cholesterol Education Program recommend that patients try to lower their cholesterol through Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC), which include exercise and a healthy diet, before starting a statin.

Lowering your cholesterol through eating habits and exercise means you can avoid the risk of side effects from medication entirely. Indeed, the only side effects of TLC you'll encounter are more energy, weight loss, and better overall health.

To help decrease your cholesterol without a statin -- or to supplement the statin you're already taking -- follow these guidelines from the TLC diet.

Reduce saturated fat to no more than 7 percent of total calories, and cholesterol to no more than 200 milligrams per day

Saturated fat is likely to raise blood cholesterol more than any other food in your diet (except for, perhaps, trans fats, which are slowly being phased out of many foods). A goal of just 7 percent of total calories is no more than 16 grams per day for most people. To stay within these boundaries, eat more of a plant-based diet with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit red meat, full-fat dairy products, baked goods, and fried foods. Read about more foods to avoid

Read labels and try to track your daily saturated fat grams until you get an idea of how much your typical food choices contain; don't rely solely on the Percent Daily Values listed, since they're based on the diet of someone who doesn't have high cholesterol and thus can eat slightly more saturated fat. An added bonus: Lowering your saturated fat intake means you'll help lower cholesterol intake as well, since saturated fat and cholesterol tend to be found together.

perfect eyes

How Well Do You See?
Want To See Better?

I thought I’d be chained to my glasses for the rest of my life.
I didn’t know you could improve your vision with only 15 minutes of simple eye exercises each day.

I thought my eyes would just keep getting worse, year on year, as I got older.

I didn’t know you can attain perfect eyesight, at any age, and then keep it.

The Truth About the Eyes
(Shhh! No Optician Will Tell You This)

Eyes are amazing!

It doesn’t matter which eye 'problem' you have, your eyes always retain the ability to heal themselves. YOU can see perfectly.

Myopia (near-sightedness)
Hyperopia (far-sightedness)
Presbyopia (middle-age sight/reading glasses)
Astigmatism
Poor night vision
Strabismus (crossed eye)
Amblyopia (lazy eye)
Photo sensitivity (sensitivity to light)
Photo phobia (fear of light)
Eyestrain, headaches and burning eyes

It just doesn't matter what is 'wrong' with your eyes.

If you give them the help and support they need, they WILL heal themselves.

Perfect Vision is your birth-right.

"I hate these damn glasses!"
I used to wear glasses. You know, the ugly goldfish bowl type that make your eyes look as big as saucers!

One day I was complaining to my friend Maria, yet again, about how lucky she was, not needing glasses.

We were at the beach.

I love the beach, but as far as locations go, it's not very spectacle-friendly!

"You don't know how lucky you are Mary. You can swim, play volley ball, roll in the sand, and you don't have to think about your glasses... losing them, breaking them - the constant cleaning!"

Maria, a true friend, was clearly tired of my moaning:

"Look Dave, why don't you quit complaining and just fix your eyes. I read somewhere that you can do it yourself by just doing some special eye exercises every day. I think it's called Natural Vision Correction or something

Entertaining Mathematical Puzzles

General Publishing Company, Ltd. | ISBN 0-486-25211-6 | ENGLISH | PDF | 125 PAGES | 2.50 MB

Introduction
In selecting material for this collection I have done my best to find puzzles that are unusual and entertaining, that call for only the most elementary knowledge of mathematics, but at the same time provide stimulating glimpses into higher levels of mathematical thinking. The puzzles (many of which appeared in my column "On the Light Side" that ran in Science World) have been grouped into sections, each dealing with a different area of mathematics. Brief comments at the beginning of each section suggest something of the nature and importance of the kind of mathematics one must use in tackling the puzzles of that section. In the answers, I have tried to go into as much detail as space permits in explaining how each problem is solved, and pointing out some of the inviting paths that wind away from the problems into lusher areas of the mathematical jungle. Perhaps in playing with these puzzles you will discover that mathematics is more delightful than you expected. Perhaps this will make you want to study the
subject in earnest, or less hesitant about taking up the study of a science for which a knowledge of advanced mathematics will eventually be required.
Surely no one today can doubt the enormous practical value of mathematics. Without its use as a tool, the discoveries and achievements of modem science would have been impossible. But many people do not realize that mathematicians actually enjoy mathematics. Take my word for it, there is as much satisfaction in knocking over an interesting problem with a well-aimed thought as there is in knocking over ten wooden pins with a well-aimed bowling ball. In one of L. Frank Baum's funniest fantasies, The Emerald City of Oz, Dorothy (together with the Wizard and her uncle and aunt) visit the city of Fuddlecumjig in the Quadling section of Oz. Its remarkable inhabitants, the Fuddles, are made of pieces of painted wood cleverly fitted together like three-dimensional jigsaw puzzles. As soon as an outsider approaches they scatter in a heap of disconnected pieces on the Hoor so that the visitor will have the pleasure of putting them together again. As Dorothy's party leaves the city, Aunt Em remarks:
"Those are certainly strange people, but I really can't see what use they are, at all." "Why, they amused us for several hours," replies the Wizard. "That is being of use to us, I'm sure." "I think they're more fun than playing solitaire or mumbletypeg," Uncle Henry adds. "For my part, I'm glad we visited the Fuddles."

ebook of magic tricks

IT is our intention to show you the easy steps to great card magic, and the second stage of our journey is to instruct you in the use of the overhand shuffle and to explain the many purposes which it serves.
Anyone who plays cards has learned to execute the overhand shuffle. It is a simple operation, yet it is the first step—and a very important one—on the road to the mastery of card magic. It is essential that you master this first step before continuing on your journey, and for this reason we urge you to learn the various shuffles and perform the many fine tricks which they make possible before you pass on to the other sections.
Each succeeding chapter in this book, except the last, leads to the one which follows and builds on what comes before it. Resist the impulse to learn everything at once but by practicing each step as you go, you will, with a speed that will amaze you, soon have traveled the entire road; when finally in that way you have reached its end, you will be a far more competent card conjurer than will the more impatient reader.
With this final word of caution, we now continue on your pleasant journey to mastering card magic.
POSITION OF THE PACK IN YOUR HANDS
It is essential that the cards be handled neatly and precisely, and the first requisite towards acquiring this neatness of execution is the position of the pack in the hands.
1. Hold your left hand half closed, palm upwards, and place the pack in it, face downwards, so that the third phalanx of the index finger is bent against the outer left corner. The middle and ring fingers, slightly bent, rest against the face of the bottom card; the little finger curls inwards so that its side rests against the inner end, and the thumb rests on the top card, its tip near the middle of the outer end.
The pack should slope downwards toward the left at an angle of about forty-five degrees, its lower side resting along the palm of the hand. In this position the pack can be gripped, as in a forceps, between the index and the little fingers by pressing them against the opposite ends (Fig. 1).

Publisher: O'Reilly Media, Inc. | Pages:602 | 2007-08-28 | ISBN / ASIN:0596510489 | 12 MB

This bestselling book is now the standard guide to building phone systems with Asterisk, the open source IP PBX that has traditional telephony providers running scared! Revised for the 1.4 release of the software, the new edition of Asterisk:
The Future of Telephony reveals how you can save money on equipment and support, and finally be in control of your telephone system.
If you've worked with telephony in the past, you're familiar with the problem: expensive and inflexible systems that are tuned to the vendor's needs, not yours.Asterisk isn't just a candle in the darkness, it's a whole fireworks show. Because Asterisk is so powerful, configuring it can seem tricky and difficult. This book steps you through the process of installing, configuring, and integratingAsterisk with your existing phone system
You'll learn how to write dialplans, set up applications including speech synthesis and voice recognition, how to script Asterisk, and much more -- everything you need to design a simple but complete system with little or no Asterisk experience, and no more than rudimentary telecommunications knowledge. The book includes:
A new chapter on managing/administering your Asterisk system
A new chapter on using Asterisk with databases
Coverage of features in Asterisk 1.4
A new appendix on dialplan functions
A simplified installation chapter
New simplified SIP configuration, including examples for several popular SIP clients (soft phones and IP telephones)
Revised chapters and appendicies reviewed and updated for the latest in features, applications, trends and best-practices
Asterisk is revolutionizing the telecom industry, due in large part to the way it gets along with other network applications. While other PBXs are fighting their inevitable absorption into the network,Asterisk embraces it. If you
need to take control of your telephony systems, move to Asterisk and see what the future of telecommunications looks like.

PHP and MySQL are popular open-source technologies that are ideal for quickly developing database-driven Web applications. PHP is a powerful scripting language designed to enable developers to create highly featured Web applications quickly, and MySQL is a fast, reliable database that integrates well with PHP and is suited for dynamic Internet-based applications.
PHP and MySQL Web Development shows how to use these tools together to produce effective, interactive Web applications. It clearly describes the basics of the PHP language, explains how to set up and work with a MySQL database, and then shows how to use PHP to interact with the database and the server.
This practical, hands-on book includes numerous examples that demonstrate common tasks such as authenticating users, constructing a shopping cart, generating PDF documents and images dynamically, sending and managing email, facilitating user discussions, connecting to Web services using XML, and developing Web 2.0 applications with Ajax-based interactivity.
The fourth edition of PHP and MySQL Web Development has been thoroughly updated, revised, and expanded to cover developments in PHP 5 through version 5.3, such as namespaces and closures, as well as features introduced in MySQL 5.1.

 Homemade Powerplant

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pages:115 | Size:9.69 MB

About the book

The Homemade Powerplant eBook was designed to help home owners and small businesses to drastically reduce the cost of using electricity. This is accomplished by instructing the reader in how to produce part or all of their energy needs from homemade wind turbines and solar panels. Home Made Power Plant is a 115 page eBook. It comes with 2 bonus manuals about BioDiesel fuel and Energy Saving Tricks.

Home Made Energy Plant does an excellent job of describing the background concepts without bogging down the reader with unnecessary electrical or other technical theories. Everything included in the manual seems to exist only to make building the projects a little easier. Very Little fluff.

The writing is clear, simple and understandable. The manual includes lots of diagrams, illustrations and photos that, most of the time at least, do a fine job of clarifying the written instructions.

This eBook was obviously created by someone that has actually succeeded in building and integrating both solar and wind powered electrical generators. Some other books appear to be written by people that have only just copied other original works without test building the concepts.

The price, at a sale price of $47 is reasonable for this specialized information, especially if you consider that the project should pay back your entire investment in just a few weeks.

There are a few other good eBooks like this one that use a similar organization scheme and even some of the exact same photos and illustrations and for about the same price. But, none of them is written as clearly nor include as many of the critical little details that often make the deference between a reasonable challenge and an impossible task.

:lol:The Complete Aquarium Guide - Fish, Plants and Accessories for your Aquarium

Koneman, "The Complete Aquarium Guide - Fish, Plants and Accessories for your Aquarium "
Konemann (July 1999) | ISBN-10: 3829017367 | 288 Pages | PDF | 21,1 MB

I highly recommend this book, especially to beginner aquarists. Great section on water quality and the relationship between hardness and pH. I also love the section on anatomy and biology of fish, and how to set up an aquarium. Not only does the book deal with fresh and marine fishes, but it also has a section on invertebrates and plants.
The indispensible reference for all aquarium enthusiasts: This volume gives readers comprehensive insight into the fascinating and multifaceted world of aquarium fish. This reference book, cataloging 700 fish species, 70 aquatic plants, and more than 40 invertebrates in color photos, offers experienced and would-be aquarists both a beautifully illustrated survey of the hobby and an analysis of their personal requirements.

Not only can you find the difference between a guppy and a grouper here, the book also guides you through such projects as building your own fishtank from plates of glass, fine-tuning the pH level of the water, and cleaning the tank without disturbing the fish. The book contains color coded information boxes and simple explanations of proper techniques for setting up and operating fresh water and marine aquariums, as well as suggestions for possible fish combinations.

Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947 in Thal, Austria.

He began weight-training at fifteen. One of the first competitions he won was the Junior Mr. Europe contest in 1965. He won Mr. Europe the following year, at age 19. Schwarzenegger has remained a prominent face in the bodybuilding sport long after his retirement, and has written several books and numerous articles on the sport.

For many years, he wrote a monthly column for the bodybuilding magazines Muscle & Fitness and Flex. Shortly after being elected Governor, he was appointed executive editor of both magazines, in a largely symbolic capacity. :noidea:Embedded Robotics

Springer Berlin Heidelberg || ISBN-10 3-540-34318-0 || Author: Thomas Br?unl || English || PDF / RAR || 454 Pages || 4.78 MB

It all started with a new robot lab course I had developed to accompany my robotics lectures. We already had three large, heavy, and expensive mobile robots for research projects, but nothing simple and safe, which we could give to students to practice on for an introductory course. We selected a mobile robot kit based on an 8-bit controller, and used it for the first couple of years of this course. This gave students not only the enjoyment of working with real robots but, more importantly, hands-on experience with control systems, real-time systems, concurrency, fault tolerance, sensor and motor technology, etc. It was a very successful lab and was greatly enjoyed by the students. Typical tasks were, for example, driving straight, finding a light source, or following a leading vehicle. Since the robots were rather inexpensive, it was possible to furnish a whole lab with them and to conduct multi-robot experiments as well. Simplicity, however, had its drawbacks. The robot mechanics were unreliable, the
sensors were quite poor, and extendability and processing power were very limited. What we wanted to use was a similar robot at an advanced level. The processing power had to be reasonably fast, it should use precision motors and sensors, and – most challenging – the robot had to be able to do on-board image processing. This had never been accomplished before on a robot of such a small size (about 12cm ????9cm ????14cm). Appropriately, the robot project was called “EyeBot”. It consisted of a full 32-bit controller (“EyeCon”), interfacing directly to a digital camera (“EyeCam”) and a large graphics display for visual feedback. A row of user buttons below the LCD was included as “soft keys” to allow a simple user interface, which most other mobile robots lack. The processing power of the controller is about 1,000 times faster than for robots based on most 8-bit controllers (25MHz processor speed versus 1MHz, 32-bit data width versus 8-bit, compiled C code versus interpretation) and this does not even take into
account special CPU features like the “time processor unit” (TPU). The EyeBot family includes several driving robots with differential steering, tracked vehicles, omni-directional vehicles, balancing robots, six-legged walkers, biped android walkers, autonomous flying and underwater robots, as

Layman's Guides to Steroids II

There is no better guide to steroid use for the beginner to intermediate user anywhere, and Mick's "No Bull" writing style means that will be highly entertained as you get educated about safe and effective steroid use. Without question the most useful steroid guides ever published.

Forget about those various anabolic steroids reference guides. I guess the number of pages and all the medical terminology is supposed to impress us into forking over lots of cash (One Anabolic Steroids Reference Guide sells for $650 on Amazon. Seriously).

Mick's Layman Guides cuts right to the chase and gives you all the information you need for safe and effective anabolic steriods use. You don't need to have a PhD to understand anabolic steroids or to read this book.

Mick covers the gains that can be made with safe doses of steriods, orals vs. injectables, how to safely and effectively use injectables, including procedures, injection sites, and important points to watch out for.

He covers the methods of usage/steroid stacks, pyramiding and a variety of steroid cycles.

Actual Minds, Possible Worlds

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Author: Jerome Bruner
Release: 1987
Publisher: Harvard University Press
Format: Paperback 222 pages
ISBN: 0674003667 (0-674-00366-7)
ISBN 13: 9780674003668 (978-0-674-00366
List Price: $22.00

Description:
In this characteristically graceful and provocative book, Jerome Bruner, one of the principal architects of the cognitive revolution, sets forth nothing less than a new agenda for the study of mind. According to Professor Bruner, cognitive science has set its sights too narrowly on the logical, systematic aspects of mental life--those thought processes we use to solve puzzles, test hypotheses, and advance explanations. There is obviously another side to the mind--a side devoted to the irrepressibly human acts of imagination that allow us to make experience meaningful. This is the side of the mind that leads to good stories, gripping drama, primitive myths and rituals, and plausible historical accounts. Bruner calls it the "narrative mode," and his book makes important advances in the effort to unravel its nature. Drawing on recent work in literary theory, linguistics, and symbolic anthropology, as well as cognitive and developmental psychology Professor Bruner examines the mental acts that enter into the imaginative creation of possible worlds, and he shows how the activity of imaginary world making undergirds human science, literature, and philosophy, as well as everyday thinking, and even our sense of self. Over twenty years ago, Jerome Bruner first sketched his ideas about the mind's other side in his justly admired book On Knowing: Essays for the Left Hand. Actual Minds, Possible Worlds can be read as a sequel to this earlier work, but it is a sequel that goes well beyond its predecessor by providing rich examples of just how the mind's narrative mode can be successfully studied. The collective force of these examples points the way toward a more humane and subtle approach to the investigation of how the mind works.

Pages : 660
Format : PDF
ISBN : 0849392543

The rapid progress of mobile/wireless communication and embedded microsensing MEMS technologies leads us toward the dream “Ubiquitous/ Pervasive Computing.” Wireless local-area networks (WLANs) have been widely deployed in many cities and have become a requisite tool to many people in their daily lives. Wireless personal-area networks (WPANs) provide a cableless personal working area by using wireless interconnection among devices, such as personal computer, printer, personal digital assistant, and digital camera. A wireless sensor node is an integrated device which consists chiefly of a sensor part, a wireless communication part, and an information processing unit. Wireless sensor nodes can be deployed in a sensing field to monitor events that we are interested in. In particular, the human body could be a potential sensing field. By backing events in the body area, wearable sensor networks may greatly improve our daily life. By integrating these multidiscipline technologies into a pervasive system, we can access information and acquire computing resources anytime, anywhere with any device

The Free Energy Secrets Of Cold Electricity

Author: Peter A Lindemann
Release: 2001
Publisher: Clear Tech
Format: PDF 130 pages
ASIN: B0006RS1TE
Edition: 1st

This material covers the complete explanation of how inventor Edwin Gray, Sr. produced what he called "Cold Electricity". EV Gray discovered that the discharge of a high voltage capacitor could be shocked into releasing a huge radiant electrostatic burst. This energy spike was produced by his circuitry and captured in a special device Gray called his "conversion element switching tube" shown here. The non-shocking, cold form of energy that came out of this "conversion tube" powered all of his demonstrations, appliances, and motors as well recharged his batteries. Mr. Gray referred tothis process as "splitting the positive."

In the early 1970's, Ed Gray demonstrated an 80-horsepower electric automobile engine that could recharge it's own batteries. He also developed a solid-state power supply that could power your home from batteries that stayed charged forever. Dr. Lindemann also reveals that Nikola Tesla discovered the same effect, back in 1889, and named it "Radiant Energy."

This book covers the same information as the video by this title. It explains how Edwin Gray produced "cold electricity" and how that relates to Nikola Tesla's discovery of "Radiant Energy" over a century ago. All of the images that appear as slides in the video are reproduced in the book, as well as complete reprints of Edwin Gray's three US patents, and three of Nikola Tesla's US Patents, which related to the subject. This is an important study manual for serious researchers. Ed Gray's EMA motor produced 40 times more power than he took from batteries. The secret is in the power supply and this book tells how he did it!

Fitness For Dummies

Info:

What exactly is new in fitness? In the exercise world, there’s something new in equipment, research, classes, gadgets, videos, and Web sites just about every day. Build Your Own Website The Right Way Using HTML and CSS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Author: Ian Lloyd
Build Your Own Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS teaches web development from scratch, without assuming any previous knowledge of HTML, CSS or web development techniques. This book introduces you to HTML and CSS as you follow along with the author, step-by-step, to build a fully functional web site from the ground up.However, unlike countless other "learn web design" books, this title concentrates on modern, best-practice techniques from the very beginning, which means you'll get it right the first time. The web sites you'll build will:
# Look good on a PC, Mac or Linux computer
# Render correctly whether your visitors are using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, or Safari
# Use web standards so your sites will be fast loading and easy to maintain
# Be accessible to disabled users who use screenreaders to browse the Web

By the end of the book, you'll be equipped with enough knowledge to set out on your first projects as a professional web developer, or you can simply use the knowledge you've gained to create attractive, functional, usable and accessible sites for personal use.
