View Full Version : Teri Hatcher of Desperate Housewives insults Filipinos
pvegetah 3rd Oct '07 Wed, 14:06 I heard through the "Umagang Kay Ganda" about a remark made on an episode of "Despirate Housewives". The scene entailed Teri Hatcher's character(Susan) at a hospital, being told by her gynecologist that she might be hitting menopause. Susan replied, "Can i just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some medical school in the Philippines"
This type of derogatory remark is not only unnecessary and hurtful, but is also unfounded considering the presence of Filipinos and Filipino-Americans in the health care industry. Filipinos are the second largest immigrant population in United States with many entering the U.S. and passing their U.S. licensing boards as doctors, nurses, and medical technicians. In fact, the Philippines produces more U.S. nurses than any other country in the world.
As Filipino, we need to band together to ensure that this type of hateful message is not allowed to continue on our television and radio waves.

Dear Kababayan and Allies:
I heard through the grapevine about a remark made on an episode of " Desperate Housewives" last night. The scene entailed Teri Hatcher's character (Susan) at a hospital, being told by her gynecologist that she might be hitting menopause. Susan replied, "Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines." If you go to abc.com, you watch the full episode and witness the scene at about 18:50 minutes into the episode.
This type of derogatory remark is not only unnecessary and hurtful, but is also unfounded, considering the presence of Filipinos and Filipino Americans in the health care industry. Filipinos are the second largest immigrant population in the United States, with many entering the U.S. and passing their U.S. licensing boards as doctors, nurses, and medical technicians. In fact, the Philippines produces more U.S. nurses than any other country in the world. So, to belittle the education, experience, or value of Filipino Americans in health care is disrespectful and plain and simply ignorant.
As Filipino Americans, we need to band together to ensure that this type of hateful message is not allowed to continue on our television and radio airwaves. Given the recent amounts of media attention that has been given to Michael Richards (against African Americans), Isaiah Washington (against gays), and Rosie O'Donnell (against Asian/ Chinese Americans), it is ridiculous that this type of hateful speech made it through various screenwriters, the show's producers, the show's actors, and ABC itself. Yet, this isn't the first time that negative remarks have been made about the Philippines or Filipinos in the past. In recent years, we've heard one too many "dogeater" comments by "comedian" Joan Rivers on the red carpet or in her standup act, and I believe that it is about time that we stand up for ourselves, so that this type of hateful speech never happens again.
Please join me in expressing your concern, disappointment, and/or disgust to the producers of ABC.com. You can sign the petition at http://www.petition online.com/ FilABC/ or you can reach them directly at abc7@abc.com.
And please feel free to forward this widely to other Filipinos/Filipino Americans/ Asian Americans/ and other allies.
Sincerely,
Kevin Nadal,
Filipino Performance Artist/ Activist

Teri Hatcher should also apologize since she could have refused to say those lines. sayang at madaming pinoy ang nanonood din sa show na to eh, nainsulto lang dahil sa remark na yan.

kerstinne25 6th Oct '07 Sat, 20:49 This issue has been reported in various NY TV news channels.
Here's the official press statement of the Phil Consulate General of New York re: the Desperate Housewives episode. This might make some of us feel better that the government is demanding an apology, doing something in defense of our highly trained medical professionals.

PHILIPPINE CONSULATE GENERAL
P R E S S R E L E A S E
PR-CBR- -2007 4 October 2007
NY PCG INTERVIEWED BY FOX NETWORK REGARDING
REMARKS MADE AGAINST PHILIPPINE MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN
TV SHOW “DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES”
New York – During an on-air interview on Fox Network’s “The Radio Factor with Bill O’Reilly” (4 October 2007), Vice Consul Leandro Lachica was given the opportunity to address the segment’s discussion of the Philippine reaction to the derogatory remarks made against Philippine medical schools on the ABC TV show “Desperate Housewives”, entitled: “Racist Joke or Overreaction”.
Mr. O’Reilly was of the position that the Philippine government was taking this too seriously, considering “the source”, a satirical comedy, in which the character played by Teri Hatcher has habitually been caught in unlikely comedic situations. Mr. O’Reilly asked if the Vice Consul was seriously offended by the comment, considering it was meant as a joke. Vice Consul Lachica pointed out that if it was a joke, it was not a funny one, as it damages the reputation of Philippine-trained doctors, hurting and offending dedicated professionals who had already complied with licensing and immigration requirements before coming to the US.
The Consulate appreciates the position of Mr. O’Reilly that political correctness may not lend itself to comedic writing. Like the United States, the Philippines respects and upholds the right to free speech, as much as it values the right to laugh. Surveys over the years have shown that Filipinos are the happiest people in the world (World Values Survey, February 2005). Our culture has taught us to find absurdity in adversity. If anything, our flaw may be that we do tend to see humor in everything. The issue is not about “political correctness,” it is about “misrepresentation”.
While some medical schools may have questionable standards, this is true of any country, including the United States. Before a foreign-trained doctor can be allowed to practice in the US, he or she must pass rigorous examinations, more than US trained doctors, and stringent immigration requirements, to be licensed in the US. Filipino doctors have done so in the thousands. Many of them now practice in prominent hospitals, major cities and in underserved areas, providing access to competent medical services in far reaching regions of the US. Freedom of speech entails the singular responsibility of making sure that what you say is accurate and truthful. We cannot allow the impression that doctors from the Philippines, or any foreign country for that matter, who have qualified and passed the same medical board examinations in the US, are any less qualified than their US colleagues.
In 1981, when President Reagan was shot, his anesthesiologist was a Filipino. Former President Bill Clinton’s personal physician was Ret. Admiral Connie Mariano, also a Filipino-American. The White House recognized the skills of our compatriots, entrusting the lives of the most powerful person in the world into Filipino hands. Dr. Enrique M. Ostrea, Jr. has been voted five times as one of the 500 “Best Doctors in America.” Dr. Jorge M. Garcia is a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, a clinical professor at George Washington University and a fellow at the American College of Surgeons. Many other Filipino doctors are as accomplished and respected in various fields of specialization.
In his letter to ABC network, the Philippine Ambassador to the United States explained that “many US hospitals employ a large number of Philippine-trained doctors, nurses and medical technologists, and some hospitals in major cities would in fact not be able to operate at full efficiency without the considerable presence of their Filipino and Filipino-American medical staff.”
The Philippine Consulate General recognizes that a television comedy is not the best reference for making an informed opinion. We also recognize the power of media to influence the minds of many. We hope that in future, those in control of popular media are more conscientious and responsible about the impressions and perceptions they create in a multicultural society as rich and diverse as that of the United States. -END-
jayjay1003 18th Oct '07 Thu, 04:48 di na ri kasalanan ni teri un.....ang may kasalanan do ay ung gumawa ng script at ang director...bakit nman nila hiayaang lumabas s world TV ung scene na un alam nmna nila mapapanood ng whole world un...napanood ko yon d2 sa austria in german language...at pti ung mga austrian na may mga asawa ot kaibigang pinoy ay nagtatanong din kung ano daw ba ang status ng medical studies s pinas....tsk..tsk..tsk..isa lng ang masasabi ko..."the best doctors are in the philippines"..mabuhayyyyy ang pinoy
leomclay 18th Oct '07 Thu, 06:56 mga tol aral nalang kayo masakit man tangapin normal yan dito sa ibang bansa, lalo na kung OFW ka mararamdaman mo tlaga ang sinasabi nyong racist. kasalanan narin nating Pilipino kung bakit bumababa ang moral natin, maaaring ang ilan sa inyo hindi alam kung ano ang mukha ng isang totoong OFW in general, masakit tangapin but to tell everyone frankly napakaraming imoral na Pinoy at Pinay dito sa ibang bansa, all of them are SINGLE even they are not.
Gusto ko share sa inyo ang normal na ugali ng Pinoy compare sa ibang nationality base on my own studies. Majority of Filipinos are "Go easy go lucky" in general. Why? As I observe even not necesarry Filipinos buy new mobiles, new cloths, etc... with just small salary. for what? Yabang? true or false?
Filipinos always think that we are the best thats why we pull down others once they are getting up (crab mentality). Here in abroad you can never trust anyone even our kababayan. And even in our own country.
Two Former President of the Philippines loss their power coz of what? coz of many stupid people na nagpagamit sa pera. Lahat tyo responsable sa nangyayari sa ating bansa as a Filipino we must respect our leaders no matter who they are.
Yes or No? Sa totoo lang guys kung ikukumpara tyo sa ibang nasyon napakababa ng Nationalism at Patriotism nating mga Pilipino specially when we compare us to Japanese, Taiwanese, Arabs, Italians, etc... kahit mali na kababayan nila kakampihan parin nila.
Isa pang malalang sakit natin ang "Pilipino Time". Check out other nationality how they care about time.
Sa school pag may debate about the gov't. many teachers/professors/mentors whatever... they always put on the mind of the student to blame the gov't. Why gov't can't do like this, do like this, do like this, etc... They never learn student how to be responsible Filipino. Simpleng pag hingi lang ng resibo di natin magawa tapos sisihin natin gov't kung bakit bulok ang mga paaralan, bakit baku-bako ang kalsada, etc... saan ba cla kumukuha ng budget diba sa tax? ilan bang mall meron sa Pilipinas? ilang tindahan don ang binibilan natin ng walang resibo? nagrereklamo ba tyo? we must do changes from ourself first before we demand.
Guys and Gals I don't mean this to hurt Filipino society, I'm also a Filipino and I'm very proud as a Filipino gusto ko lang makita nyo kung ano tyo para maitama natin ang mali sa atin dahil 100% akong sigurado na mauulit ito hanggang di tyo natutoto. Please be responsible Filipino saan ka man makarating.
