A mixture of good and bad news awaits Barangay Ginebra fans when the Kings begin their SMART PBA Philippine Cup title defense. The bit of good news comes from Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand. The dynamic duo is once again donning the Ginebra uniform to tend the Kings' backcourt after totally missing out the 2006-07 Fiesta Cup to serve the RP men's basketball team that saw action in three international tournaments, including the 24th FIBA-Asia Men's Championship in Tokushima, Japan

This one though will break the heart of Ginebra diehards.

Energetic forward Rudy Hatfield will no longer be around to corner those rebounds while do-it-all big man Rafi Reavis remains a doubtful presence for the Kings following the shoulder surgery he underwent in the US a few months ago.

"Alam naman natin na walang katulad si Hatfield. There's no other player who can provide the same energy that he (Hatfield) brings," said coach Jong Uichico.

That brings veteran Eric Menk and Billy Mamaril as the only big men to patrol the lanes after the Kings opted to release reserve Andy Seigle.

The absence of those three bodies who played a major part in the Kings' successful title run last year casts uncertainties on Ginebra's title retention bid.

But Uichico, already used to the Kings' never-say-die spirit, has yet to concede the All-Filipino title and the Commissioner Jun Bernardino Trophy that goes along with it.

"There are players who have improved while these players (Hatfield and Co.) were gone," said the soft-spoken mentor." I'm sure they will be ready to accept the challenge."

Mamaril, son of former Ginebra stalwart Romulo, is one of them, along with long-range gunner Mark Macapagal and hardworker Mike Holper

Besides, what the Kings lacked inside the paint, they more than made up by shoring up their backcourt.

In addition to Caguioa and Helterbrand – the league's top two backcourtmen when the Kings reigned in the Philippine Cup last season – Ginebra signed up former PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Johnny Abarrientos for another year, tabbed Macky Escalona of Ateneo from the Rookie Draft and acquired speedster Paul Artadi from Purefoods.

"We're competitive enough to compete. Ginebra has always been known for not backing out from any challenges,” Uichico added.

If its season debut was an indication, Barangay Ginebra's coming games could be a lot more demanding as the Kings attempt to protect the coveted crown against a phalanx of dangerous challengers.

The defending champions opened their campaign in the 2007-08 Smart PBA Philippine Cup with a 102-95 victory over the Red Bull Barakos Friday but drew suspicion about their invincibility after nearly blowing away a 23-point cushion.

"We are bracing for more challenges along the way because we are the defending champions. But for as long as we keep doing the things we have to do, we might have a good chance of survival," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

Health issues – particularly to his key players – pose a great concern for Uichico and the Kings.

Mark Caguioa, Ginebra's leading source of points, and star center Eric Menk both missed the team's season opener due to injuries and are not expected to suit up Wednesday night when the Kings battle the Talk N Text Phone Pals. Caguioa is sidelined by a shoulder injury while Menk is hurting out with an injured calf.

Against Red Bull, the Kings hardly felt the absence of their two superstars only because the Barakos are not blessed with biggies to man the frontcourt and intimidate in the paint.

Ginebra won't have that luxury against Talk N Text in their 7:20 p.m. encounter at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Phone Pals' frontcourt is well secured by dependable mammoths led by 6-9 Asi Taulava and rebound monster Harvey Carey, who certainly can dominate and terrorize opponents.

Uichico should also consider that TNT is coming off a disappointing 97-112 loss to Purefoods last Saturday so the Phone Pals are well motivated coming into the game.

In the absence of Caguioa and Menk, the Kings are counting on Mark Macapagal, Jayjay Helterbrand, Sunday Salvacion and Rafi Reavis in their bid for win No.2 and share the early lead with Purefoods and Magnolia.

Top rookie pick Joe Devance also joined the list of injured stars with a sprained right ankle that threatens to keep him out of the rotation as the Welcoat Dragons collide with the Barakos in the other game at 4:35 p.m.

Devance’s much awaited pro debut last Friday was met by disaster as the 6-7 Fil-Am twisted his ankle before he could even warm up as the Dragons went down in defeat, 76-85, against the Coca-Cola Tigers.

The Barakos, on the other hand, will be without their fiery coach, Yeng Guiao, who is serving a one-game suspension for confronting and berating PBA technical group chief Perry Martinez after a losing effort against Ginebra. (DBC)

Talk N Text rose from the depths of despair using its sorry loss the last time out as the driving force against Barangay Ginebra.

"Sinalaula kami ng Purefoods. We’re humiliated. The last two days, we were just talking about the importance of bouncing back. We used the loss as a motivational tool and we came out with boundless energy, intensity and effort," said coach Derrick Pumaren, moments after his team poured their frustrations on the Kings.

Talk N Text’s big men concentrated on defense and let their backcourt take the fore offensively as the Pals drubbed the Kings, 111-102, Wednesday night in the 2007-08 Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Mark Cardona, Jimmy Alapag, Felix Belano and Renren Ritualo each scored at least 13, leading Talk N Text to its second win in three starts.

"We’re a big team but we can no longer produce points just going to our big men down low. Babanggain lang sila doon. We need quick moves, quick passes and quick shots," said Pumaren.

"Our big men got the rebounds against Purefoods but they forced their shots and that sent us off track," Pumaren added.

The Pals moved well without the ball and made timely cuts as they slowly pulled away in the second half in dealing the Kings the loss.

The Kings won their first game against the Red Bull Barakos, 102-95, Friday despite missing the services of injured stars Mark Caguioa and Eric Menk.

Still without Caguioa and Menk, the Kings engaged the Pals in a toe-to-toe battle in the first half but faded away in the last two quarters.

The Pals opened a double-digit spread, 68-58, on a 16-7 opening run in the third quarter and led by as many as 18, 97-79, on torrid shooting by Belano and Ritualo in the fourth period.

Cardona paced the Pals with 20 points on 5-of-9 field goal shooting, plus 10 charities.

"Na-challenge ako kay (Ronald) Tubid. Gusto kong tapatan yung energy niya," said Cardona, the top player in the recent Fiesta Conference.

"Lumabas ang laro ni Macmac kanina kasi hindi na sya nagpipilit ng tira. I told him to change his game. Dapat malayo siya sa tao niya dahil pwede siyang bangga-banggain ngayon," said Pumaren. (NC)

The reigning MVP ruled and the Fiesta Conference champs bested the Philippine Cup titlists in a thriller of a PBA Halloween presentation.

Willie Miller tied the league season-high of 35 points he himself made in their season debut, leading the Alaska Aces to a 103-92 overtime win over the Barangay Ginebra Kings in a duel of title-holders in the 2007-08 Smart PBA Philippine Cup at the Astrodome Wednesday night.

Miller fired seven of his 35 points in the extension play as he personally scuttled the Kings’ bid.

In the eyes of coach Tim Cone, Mike Cortez and debuting rookie Ariel Capus, however, were their biggest heroes.

Cortez hit a triple to force overtime while Capus shut down Jayjay Helterbrand in the extension play.

"I’m sure everyone would want to write about Willie. He deserves so. But there was a moment in overtime when I was yelling at him, telling him to stop trying to be the hero and just play his game," said Cone.

"To me, our stars tonight really were Mike and Ariel. Mike sent the game into overtime while Ariel came in his first PBA game and helped us by stopping Helterbrand in overtime," Cone added.

The clock was winding down to its final seconds when Cortez rifled in a trey in front of Helterbrand to knot the count at 89-all.

Helterbrand then missed a top-of-the-key jumper at the buzzer as the game went to OT.

Sunday Salvacion broke the ice with a trey but the Kings never scored again, allowing the Aces to notch a second win against the same number of losses.

The Kings slid to 1-3 – the team’s worst start in any tourney since starting with the same card in the 2002 Commissioner’s Cup. The team continued to play minus injured stars Eric Menk and Mark Caguioa.

Helterbrand carried much of the fight for the Kings, scoring 18 points and issuing a league season-high 13 assists. But he lost his sting when covered by Capus in the extension play.

Miller was hot all night, making nine in the first period, four in the second, 11 in the third, four in the fourth and seven in overtime. He was 4-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc and 10-of-17 from the two-point zone. The two-time MVP winner also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out three assists.

He had a hand in four plays that fueled a nine-to-nothing run and gave Alaska a 100-92 lead with 1:30 left to play.

He was at the scoring end in three plays and issued a perfect feed to Joachim Thoss in one.

Three deadlocks and 14 lead changes marked the first half of play with Ginebra taking control in the first period and Alaska fighting back in the second quarter.

The Kings took the half at 30-28 while being a shade better between two teams groping for form at the start.

Ginebra shot 30.3 percent from the field and committed 10 errors while Alaska was worse, hitting at a 27.3-percent clip and having 12 errors in the first 24 minutes of play. (NC)
