Iligan under state of calamity due to floods ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/19 November) — Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz has declared the city under a state of calamity following the flashfloods that dislaced 500 families and destroyed at least 20 houses and crops.

Cruz and the City Disaster Coordinating Council went around the affected areas Sunday night, rescuing families and children in the heavily flooded and impassable Mahayahay village.

Long-time residents said the last time the city experienced this kind of flooding was in the early 1970s.

The floodwaters along the city’s main road connecting Lanao and Iligan reached above waist level.

In barangay Tubod, the bridge could not be seen due to the overflow.

The flood also caused traffic, stalling cars and a bus whose passengers opted to disembark and walk through the flooded streets.

Elizabeth Fuentes, nursing her 5-month old baby in an evacuation center, recounted how the floodwaters reached the second floor o their house in Mahayahay.

“There are 68 families in Merila here who have left their homes and stayed in Catholic chapels for temporary refuge. We are still waiting for food and relief goods. We need the government’s and non-government assistance,” said Inday Baredo, while showing a list of evacuees.

Iligan, disaster bodies evacuate residents of flood-prone areas

Iligan City (19 November) — Early this morning, City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz of Iligan has called up DepEd 10 Regional Office, Cagayan de Oro City, for the suspension of classes of the secondary and elementary level due to the continuous downpour of rain which affected the city’s flood-prone areas. The city has experienced heavy rain since Saturday, November 17, 2007 until today.

While students/pupils are excused from their classes, principals and teachers are required to report to their respective schools to assist in the use of the school as evacuation centers for families affected by flood, according to Schools Division Superintendent Domingo V. Samson of DepEd Iligan. Also, principals assigned at the low-lying areas are on red alert.

The city mayor as chief executive has the prerogative to request for the suspension of classes from the high authority for the safety of the children, said Samson.

The Iligan City Disaster Coordinating Council (ICDCC), through Armando A. Edrozo, Civil Defense Deputized Coordinator, has reported the that affected 12 flood-prone barangays namely Tubod, Tambacan, Mahayahay, Palao, Del Carmen, Ubaldo Laya, Dalipuga, San Miguel, Barinaut, Hinaplanon, Luinab, and Tipanoy.

The Department of Public Works & Highways (DPWH) has advised that the Tubod Bridge be closed to motorists since last night because of the flood overflowing the bridge.

Families affected by the flood are now at the evacuation centers - barangay auditorium, schools auditorium, barangay chapel, with the City Social Welfare & Development (CSWD), PNRC and other groups assisting the needs of the evacuees. Number of families evacuated could not be determined yet as of this time, per ICDCC report. (PIA-Iligan)

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines — Three people drowned and some 500 others were displaced after heavy rain unleashed floods across this southern Philippines city, officials said Monday.

The Tubod River and its tributaries overflowed their banks after three days of heavy rain, leaving parts of this city of 300,000 people under three feet (one meter) of water, said civil defense officer Armando Edrozo.
