The rebel soldier with the wacky wig in last week’s takeover of the Peninsula Manila hotel in Makati was a security escort of Mayor Jejomar Binay.

Binay, who heads the United Opposition (UNO), himself admitted Monday that former Army Cpl. Elmer Colon was one of the City Hall employees who joined the group of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV...

Colon was seen on television wearing a wig during the seven-hour hotel standoff and standing behind the rebel leaders when they called for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s resignation.

“From what I was told, he (Colon) did not report for work on that day,” the mayor said. “I probably would have asked [him] not to go if he had asked my permission.”

Binay pointed out that he immediately confirmed to them that Colon was an employee, and that he even volunteered the information that some of the names in the list of civilians who were arrested were City Hall personnel.
