diokdin 29th Nov 2010 Mon, 12:33 As per maysapaw's request, here it is.
How to Use Kindle Collection Manager for Windows:
Note: All credits goes to the maker Adrian Colegate (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94261). His post is found in Mobile read forum.
You can download Kindle Collection Management here v0.4.1:
http://www8.zippyshare.com/v/7183541/file.html
IMPORTANT:
1. Don't forget to registered your Kindle to your Amazon account in order to use the Collection folder feature of your Kindle.
2. If you have the previous version of Kindle Collection Management for Windows it is recommended that you unistalled them before you installed this.
**Since Kindle doesn't do a fast collection management, only manual adding each book into a collection folder and since Calibre's collection doesn't work in Kindle, the Kindle Collection Mangament for Windows was made.**
Step by Step Guide:
1. Transfer your ebooks to your Kindle either by Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/download), Drag and Drop, Email or wirelessly transfered using Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTEzMDk4ODYxOQ?src=global).
2. Installed Kindle Collection Management on your PC
3. Hook up your Kindle to your PC
4. Then Open Kindle Collection Management. And it will see the contents inside your Kindle. It will look like this:
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6378/openk.gif
On the left side is what's inside your Kindle and on the right side is the collections inside your Kindle.
5. Then you can right click and make a New Collection.
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/3449/collectionoperations.gif
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/7716/newcollection.gif
6. Rename it:
http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/9502/renamecollection.gif
7. Drag and Drop the ebooks from the left side to the new rename collection you made on the right side.
http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/7065/dragdropitems.gif
8. And since Kindle doesn't allow a subfolder even though you made one on your PC or thru Calibre, you couldn't see it as a collection once you disconnect it on your PC. Those files are visible in Kindle Collection Management. In order not to do a whole lot of drag and drop. You can make a Collection out of that Subfolder. Like this:
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/3305/createnewcollectionfrom.gif
And it will look like this afterwards:
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/7962/newcollectioncreatedfro.gif
9. After you are done arranging and managing your collections, you need to ok and commit to the changes you made.
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/5182/commitingchanges.gif
10. Eject and disconnect your Kindle to your PC then restart your Kindle in order for your Collection to take effect.
Take Note: It might take a few seconds or minutes for everything to appear, be patient while it is still indexing.
Congratulations, you are done! ;) Very easy and painless right?

maysapaw 29th Nov 2010 Mon, 16:49 thanks girl :) i really appreciate the help...like i mentioned to my pm to you, i only have 24 hours to learn the how to's of kindle management, lol :)
will give you feedback once i get hold of my kindle and use the system.
diokdin 29th Nov 2010 Mon, 17:18 @maysapaw, you're welcome. Glad I could help 'cha out and I'm not late in my posting. ;) He he  And this is good suggestion to have a thread that is dedicated only for Kindle since marami-rami na din tayo dito na may Kindle. :)
maysapaw 29th Nov 2010 Mon, 21:34 mali pala...i dont have to learn KCM in less than 24 hours but more of, i only have 24 hours to apply it to my friend's kindle.
currently i have around 600 ebooks in my calibre (all converted to mobi) and i can't imagine how i'll be able to transfer the file and make a collection out of it, assuming i want a complicated collection set up.
i might just stick to arrangement by authors name (A, B, C and so on). basta something not too complicated :D
hopefully other kindlers can share how they arrange their collection, software they used, no. of ebooks currently in their kindle, etc :) please help the poor souls like me,
banana_republic 30th Nov 2010 Tue, 04:27 Thanks for the great work Diokdin, we really appreciate it.
diokdin 1st Dec 2010 Wed, 05:49 @maysapaw, I have mine save by collection. And my collection folders are the Authors name.
Since if you selected by author or by title etc. you can still see the books you put in a collection folder. But if you selected by collection it will show your collection folder first then the books that is not inside a collection. Also the folders won't be categories alphabetically, some Kindle owners put #, . >< signs (but you need to know the order of the signs) before the name of the collection to make it alphabeticalize...but usually the one you open first is the one on the top most part on the first page of your home screen. :)
I'll post pictures later....so you'll know what I mean.
@banana_republic , sure no probs....welcome. :) :thanks:
maysapaw 1st Dec 2010 Wed, 10:10 thanks :) appreciate it. mahirap mag-imagine, lol :)
diokdin 1st Dec 2010 Wed, 14:19 Here are the pics on how it looks when you arrange it by collection, most recent, author or title.
**Notice on the right upper part on the pictures. Dyan mo e-ch-change yung arrangement ng ebooks mo.
-In most recent, yung nasa una na page sa home screen nyo is the book that you recently read/finished. Those bold and italic text are the collection folders, I name my collection folders by author. The number inside the open and close parenthesis are the number of ebooks that I put on that folder. As you can see kahit I put inside na yung Enticed Me at Twilight sa Shayla Black collection folder ko, makikita din cya sa labas ng folder if it's arrange other than By Collections.
Most recent first:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/bfdbbbe3.jpg
-If by Title, it is arrange alphabetically on the books/collection folders titled.
By Title:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/191cdc8e.jpg
-If by Author, it is arrange alphabetically din but sa authors name. And if you didn't edit the metadata sa book, as you can see sa pic, yung title ng book ang in-narrange as the authors name.
By Author:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/2793ad78.jpg
-If by collection which is what I am using. Yung nasa unahan na page eh yung last na or recent na collection folder e-nopen mo ang on top. Sa akin Rachel Caine, kasi I'm currently reading the Ghost Town.
By Collection:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/63ef8791.jpg
The problem when I arrange it By Most Recent, By Author or By Title eh kahit nasa collection folder na cya, since you arrange it like I mention, double2x sila. You'll see the ebooks on the main pages and also inside the collection folders. But if you arrange them By Collection. All ebooks that you categorized inside the collection folder, doon lang talaga cya. Di mo makikita sa main pages. Yung hindi mo lang linagay sa collection folder mo na ebooks ang makikita mo sa main pages.
It will look like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/66b51fa3.jpg
Once you reach the end of your Collection folders, yung mga hindi na ilagay sa Collection folders na ebook ang makikita mo. Yung nasa collection di mo na makikita na double copy.
Note: (If using By Collections) One thing din, if you read the ebooks that aren't belong to any collection folders, it will appear on top but not on the first page, like the collection folders do. It will appear on top after you go thru to all your Collection folders. :) Like sa pic since The Devil's Daughter ang recent binasa ko na hindi included sa Collection folder named Catherine Coulter, kaya ito ang una after all my collection folders.
Note 2: Collection folders are not arrange alphabetically. Other Kindle users uses signs (> # . ) but it's too complicated for me. I didn't tried it out. Some says that putting a period (.) before the name of the collection folders will arrange it alphabetically but after the updates, di na daw effective. So, kayo mag decide anong sign ang gagamitin nyo. Ako okay lang hindi mag alphabetical. I can search naman especially if daming books na sa Kindle mo.
hancock 2nd Dec 2010 Thu, 16:01 katanungan about sa kindle??

pwede ba mag search word duon sa kidle parang adobe PDF reader sa PC.. kung saan type mo lng yung word tapos lalabas na kung saan mo makikita yun..
Yes. You can type and search. You can use search to Search your items, Search Kindle store, Search google, Search Dictionary, Search Wikipedia or go to the web. ;)
Ways to search in the Kindle:
-Outside or Inside the book
**Outside the Book**:
Click Menu button and this will appear:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/1e254f43.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/456bfbac.jpg
Type in which you wanna search, I put rachel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/63a210ac.jpg
And it gives me this results:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/a277e222.jpg
**Now inside the book**:
Click Menu button and this will appear:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/b27ee518.jpg
Scroll down to Search This Book and a search engine will appear below the book, like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/f0f19e73.jpg
Once you hit find it will show it's results. Look like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/diokdin/d2a13c8f.jpg
Note: If you want to search outside the book but you are within the book you can still do it. Just press the right side of the 5 directional pad of the Kindle and it will give you the Search my items, search google etc choices after find. :)
diokdin 3rd Dec 2010 Fri, 12:32 :thanks: sa pagshare mo TS..
You're welcome. ;)
diokdin 6th Dec 2010 Mon, 13:23 Mga kasymb, Yung mga Public domain ebooks pala, like in google books, gutenburg etc. Can be downloaded directly on your Kindle.
1. Just open your web browser sa Kindle go to googlebooks or gutenburg etc....
2. Find the book you like to download. Make sure its the right format for Kindle, usually it will say Kindle format.
3. Then click the Kindle format, it will show a pop up that you are downloading blah, blah books.
4. Once you click ok, it will give a pop up that it's in your Home screen. :)
Note: if you have also accounts on other ebook stores like fictionwise, allromanceebooks etc. You can also download the books you bought from there as long as the book format you bought is compatible format for Kindle usually it will download only .azw, prc, mobi or text format kahit Kindle reads PDF files it won't download wirelessly kailangan .azw, prc, mobi or text.
All you have to do to get the ebooks you bought from these ebook websites are:
1. Open the website like allromanceebooks.com on your Kindle browser
2. Log in on your account
3. Go to your Library
4. Then download the books you bought then you can read it on you Kindle. ;) And it's wirelessly transfered too.
Note2: You can browse and shop on this store too on your Kindle, you can also download those free reads ebooks available on their website aside from the paid ones, basta don't forget to download the Kindle format.
sticky-feet 7th Dec 2010 Tue, 16:22 EEEeeeep, finally finally got my Kindle!!:excited:
Nagttransfer na ng books, grabe andami. Super useful 'tong thread na to!
Hmm, medyo nagkakagulo lang sa organization by collection, and the flashes during the page turns bothers me a bit.
Lighted cover na lang kulang. :slap:
littlelulu_920 7th Dec 2010 Tue, 17:50 hi, i ordered kindle na rin :) now i'm organizing my files. which is better txt or mobi. coz if it's in mobi i can edit the tags in calibre but in txt i don't know what will appear in the screen.
thank you so much for all the response.
banana_republic 7th Dec 2010 Tue, 18:01 I may be receiving my Kindle 3 this week brought along by my sister from LA. :excited:
$150.00 daw siya, baka dahil sa sales tax.
Still a good deal:thumbsup:
sticky-feet 7th Dec 2010 Tue, 21:06 My Kindle froze while I was in the middle of reading it. :weep: Dunno what I did to finally turn it off, and then on again.
So I was looking through the net now, and it's either (1) people who are too excited tend to press the 'next' button more than necessary, thus 'confusing' the poor K3; (2) books're too many for the K3 to handle.
It says in an article I read that you can slide the power switch and hold it for atleast 15 seconds before releasing to restart the Kindle.
How about you guys, did you have any K3 tech difficulties?
PS. Am waaaay over the page turn flashes BTW.
diokdin 7th Dec 2010 Tue, 22:10 @sticky-feet, @littlelulu_920 and @banana_republic, congrats on your Kindles.
@sticky-feet, Did you update your firmware to the latest version. V3.0.2 ang latest but there's an Early release FW version 3.0.3 found here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_navbox_top_kindlelg?nodeId=200529700
Also, sticky-feet you have to wait awhile while your Kindle is still indexing before you start using it if marami kang na transfer it will freeze. When I first had my Kindle okay naman bec I waited, but when I transfer another batch a week after that nag freeze cya bec I was so impatient to wait. So I have to force shut down by holding the power switch for 15 seconds.
@littlelulu_920, maganda naman viewing a text format in Kindle but I still prefer mobi/prc format on my Kindle. I haven't tried editing a text format tags on Calibre, usually I just convert them to mobi or ePub for my other reader.
@banana_republic, ahhh so baka sa Best Buy bumili yung sis mo kaya $150. Kasi pag online walang tax unless yung state sa LA may Amazon physical store/warehouse kaya may tax. Or maybe may additional cyang binili na cover? Do you think?
sticky-feet 7th Dec 2010 Tue, 22:15 Oooh, okay diokdin, I looked at the settings and it seems I still have the V. 3.0.1., talk about Jurassic. Thanks!
diokdin 7th Dec 2010 Tue, 23:23 ^aahh, kaya pala. That will solve the freezing too especially when you're out in the sunlight. You're welcome.
wifi only yan sis? Or wifi plus 3g? Kasi if you're hook up on an internet connection it will automatically updates. Also don't forget to registered your Kindle on your own Amazon account so you can use your collection features. You can't use the collection features if hindi mo na registered yung Kindle mo.
**Oopps, I guess you did kasi you were able to use the Kindle Collection Management... Hehe
banana_republic 8th Dec 2010 Wed, 00:26 @banana_republic, ahhh so baka sa Best Buy bumili yung sis mo kaya $150. Kasi pag online walang tax unless yung state sa LA may Amazon physical store/warehouse kaya may tax. Or maybe may additional cyang binili na cover? Do you think?
Most likely she bought it from Best Buy kasi she only had a couple of days lay-over before heading back to HK.
I don't really mind the extra $11.00 better than having it shipped here.
diokdin 8th Dec 2010 Wed, 00:50 @banana_republic, ahh I see. :) Okay nga yan keysa may pa shipped dyan direct from Amazon, may Import duties etc pa that will add up more than $11. Di mo pina add sa sis mo book cover?
sticky-feet 8th Dec 2010 Wed, 18:15 @ diokdin: Wifi only, heehee, had it registered yesterday pagkadating na pagkadating. Nag-hang na naman siya kahit na-update ko na yung software e, pero atleast nagwowork naman yung reset. Naku, my very impatient thumb kasi e. :slap: Nagustuhan nga ni Lola, and she wants one for herself kasi wala na akong mga bagong bili na paperbacks, at lahat ng libro na binabasa ko, dito ko na nakukuha.
diokdin 8th Dec 2010 Wed, 18:35 @sticky-feet, LOL  my husband is using my Kindle right now. So I'm reading my ebooks on my EZ Reader. Sabi ko nga sa kanya na bumili cya ng own Kindle nya. Gusto daw nya, maganda daw magread. Very easy. At clear na clear daw. Ha ha :D But of course, yung Pearl e-Ink na ang gamit eh....
Yung Lola mo at hubby ko same silang dalawa. Hmmm... How many ebooks did you transfer? Kasi everytime you shut it down, it will go thru it's indexing. So you have to be patient and wait. Kasi if hindi pa natapos at you press a key na agad it will hang talaga.
banana_republic 9th Dec 2010 Thu, 01:11 @banana_republic, ahh I see. :) Okay nga yan keysa may pa shipped dyan direct from Amazon, may Import duties etc pa that will add up more than $11. Di mo pina add sa sis mo book cover?
@diokdin, I really don't fancy paying big bucks for a glorified book light:book:
There are now generic covers with LED lights being peddled in those China sites; I will just wait for a likely candidate. In the meantime I will make do with my trusty reading lamp.
BTW, if I disable Wi-Fi, will that prevent automatic synching and indexing of Kindle 3?
I have all of my e-books on an external drive connected to my desktop and i really don't mind transferring by cable.
Would you recommend applying a screen protector on the K3?
Thanks.
diokdin 9th Dec 2010 Thu, 03:37 @banana_republic, well I didn't mean the book cover of Kindle. Yung generic lang na book cover mayron kasi nasa $10-15 worth some as high as $20 but it's a good book cover na. For book light pwede naman lamp lang muna use. Just some book cover to protect your Kindle for the mean time until you find something you like best.
And I know what you mean....super mahal talaga sa Kindle book cover. I think it cost at most $35 nga eh not $60 bucks. And it kinda make your Kindle a bit heavy with the Kindle lighted book cover. You'll really notice the difference using the cover or without it.
If off yung wifi, you can't sync but the device can still index. So okay lang when you transfer your ebooks using USB cable once you disconnected wait for awhile while it index. :)
If you mean automatically sync your ebooks you bought from Amazon. You have to press MENU then go down to choose Sync & Check for Items and it will sync where you left sa book mo on your mobile and Kindle for PC. But if turn on yung wifi mo it will automatically updates FW. Amazon can remotely update the software on your K3.
This happened to me recently pala: Yung Amanda Hocking's ko na ebook nawala. Sabi error daw can't be open, delete it and redownload again. If I want to read it and if I purchase it sa Amazon daw I can re-download it sa Archived ko. But since hindi ko ito binili and it's in my Laptop I delete the copy sa Kindle kasi it won't open na and then transfer it again using my laptop.
So they do remotely erase your ebooks. But maybe it's just random. So I only turn on my 3g/wifi when I really have to, to avoid that from happening again. :)
About sa screen protector, I have one on my K3. I bought it sa Amazon din by Boxwave, an Antiglare Screen Protector cost $2.50 for 1 screen. Maganda naman cya kasi if you apply it right at walang bubbles you hardly notice that you put a screen protector on it. Okay lang naman lagyan yung K3 ng screen protector especially if you use silicon skin case. Just to protect the screen from scratches. :)
sticky-feet 9th Dec 2010 Thu, 17:59 @ diokdin: Hmmp, looks like my Lola and I will be having a tug-of-war over K3, pinahiram ko lang for a while para ma-experience niya, ayun, tatapusin muna daw niya yung book (the one I was planning on reading) :slap: Nakakatawa pa, she was very against me having a Kindle in the first place (marami na daw akong gadgets masyado), ngayon she really really likes it. Techy na si Lola. I guess I have to scour eBay ulit para mapilit siyang bumili, hehe.
@ banana_republic: I asked my Tita before she had the Kindle shipped here kung pwede niya din ako bilhan ng screen protector for it. May bibilhin na siya dapat, mura lang, mga £7, kaso may review dun yung customer na it sort of looks like an LCD screen when you place a screen protector, lalo na pag nag-reflect ng light.
banana_republic 9th Dec 2010 Thu, 20:59 My K3 arrived tonight and it was DOA:weep:
When I plugged it in there was no charging light or icon and it can't be detected by my laptop.
Doing a 15 second reset doesn't help.
I would like to avoid sending it back, is there a Kindle service center here in the Philippines?
maysapaw 9th Dec 2010 Thu, 21:51 ^ ooh...that's too bad. unfortunately, i don't think there is a kindle service center outside of US right now.
try calling the customer service and be prepared with the details.
btw, why don't you just let it charged for the meantime and then once the light turned green, pull the usb/plug, turn it on, then plug the usb again in your laptop. hopefully madetect na this time around. i guess mas mahaba yung binyahe nung kindle mo (plus inventory item sya sa best buy (dun nabili di ba?) so the battery was drained. i think if you buy it direct from amazon, when you receive your kindle it is at least 3/4 charged.
i understand, your impatient to play with your new toy :D
@diokdin, finally my kindle and i met last weekend...unfortunately di ko masyadong nalaro kasi i was too busy with my whirlwind vacation. i guess, being excited for such a long long time, eh naging anticlimatic ang aming pagtatagpo
though, right now i have already uploaded several books and has started reading on it :D
maysapaw 9th Dec 2010 Thu, 22:09 @banana republic
namiss read ko yung post mo...hopefully kahit na alang light (orange/green) yung power eh icharge mo na lang muna. baka nasobrahan ng drain yung kindle mo.
sana that would be the case, kasi sobrang hassle kung isosoli mo pabalik sa US. at saka since you bought that from best buy, i don't know how they will handle the freight cost. still hoping that everything works out for you.
diokdin 10th Dec 2010 Fri, 03:56 @banana_republic, Amazon will still honor that Kindle sis kahit you bought it sa Best Buy. What you can do is call customer service or email them.
Here's the link for Returns: http://www.amazon.com/gp/css/returns/homepage.html/ref=hy_f_4
But I think this link is much better for you (to read what you need to do, the steps), Replacement and Exchanges: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=orc_hp_s_replpol?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200572800#replace
Make sure to put/include the receipt info of the Kindle. Or you can say it was a gift from your sister and she bought it from Best Buy, if your sis didn't have the receipt for it, they can check the serial number of that Kindle.
What they will do is send you a new Kindle sa mail and you have to open an Amazon account and put in your Credit Card/Debit Card info they will charge it for shipping but they will return the money back naman sa account mo once they receive the damaged Kindle back. It's also an insurance for them if you don't return the damaged Kindle. They will give you instruction once the new Kindle arrive to put the damage Kindle sa box ng new Kindle and shipped it back with the label.
I hope your Kindle issue will be resolve smoothly. :)
Also here's the Customer Service link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/contact-us/general-questions.html?ie=UTF8&nodeId=901888&type=phone&mode=&skip=true
diokdin 10th Dec 2010 Fri, 04:07 @sticky-feet, haha  Buy your Lola her own Kindle, especially malapit na Christmas. Plan ko nga bilhan yung hubby ko but he said he doesn't want it daw but he keeps on using mine naman. Pag nakakaipon ako, I'll probably buy him one. But may mas gusto kasi cyang iba than the Kindle eh. Yung model airplane ng X-15 ang kinakabaliwan nya.
@maysapaw, Well...madami ka din gagawin dyan eh since it's holiday time plus vacation mo. Daming mong kailangan gawin. Keep in touch with your family and friends kaya ganun lang. But you will appreciate more at ma e-excite ka again like before when you and your Kindle get a true alone time. Quality time ninyo dalawa. He he
Super ganda ng Pearl e-Ink screen ano? Nice and dark text. ;)
banana_republic 10th Dec 2010 Fri, 18:32 Thanks diokdin and maysapaw; that makes me feel better already.

diokdin 10th Dec 2010 Fri, 23:49 @banana_republic, ahhh she got the one day delivery. Umm, when you have it replace sis don't forget you have to have your own Amazon account and let Amazon know your deliver address their in the Philippines. Make return as a gift. Kasi if not they might returned it to your sis address in LA and since nandyan cya sa Pinas you can't get it and Amazon might charge her card for another Amazon bec you haven't return the other Kindle in the new box of the Kindle you had received.
And for privacy, you might want to edit that shipping tracking information. :)
@rptdelosreyes, Kindle 3g+wifi cost $189 and by maysapaw post I link on the first page post #2 which has the hyperlink LINK 4 and LINK 5 you can make an estimate on how much you'll have to pay. Since shipping will cost $15 flat rate na yan items handling $12 and duties and tax, we'll say $35-40. Add everything and you'll get a total estimate cost for Kindle 3g+wifi of $251-256. :) About where to buy please back read I post it on the frist page too in my post #2 How to buy using JAC service, directly to Amazon, by sulit.com.ph or by ebay.com.ph.
About PDF readability, yes it does read PDF format but, IMHO, it's kinda awkward to read a novel in PDF format since you have to zoom and pan around it, it doesn't reflow. But if you're reading a Text Book, Manga, Comics, etc. eBooks that has graphics, pie charts, illustrations, and pictures okay lang naman to zoom in and read the little balloon text etc.
I post what I think about it HERE (http://www.symbianize.com/showpost.php?p=4130796&postcount=165).
rptdelosreyes 11th Dec 2010 Sat, 19:47 thanks mam. yung 3g ba neto ay unlimited?? what i mean is free interent ba po ito?? at may napanood po akong vid na hindi raw colored ang mga ebook reader? is that true? thanks po sa pag entertain ng mga questions  :salute:
maysapaw 11th Dec 2010 Sat, 20:34 ^ i think the 3g function of kindle is only for downloading ebooks (and shopping) from amazon, and not for internet browsing purposes of other websites. if you want to browse, you can use your wifi access, but that means you have to be on a wi-fi hotspot.
kindle 3 is not yet a colored ebook reader...maybe pag nagkakindle 4 or 5 na. but that would be a year or 2 from now.
currently meron ng color ebook reader ang Nook (from Barnes & Noble) but i haven't seen or tried one.
backread ka na lang boss, kasi marami na talagang ebook reader sa market. you just have to understand what you want from your ebook reader before you can find which ebook reader is fit for you.
diokdin 12th Dec 2010 Sun, 03:56 @rptdelosreyes, to add to maysapaw's post...3g is unlimited because mostly naman it's used only to download the ebooks you buy. If you're downloading here in US the 3G download is free but if you're outside US the 3G download is .15-.20/MB. But browsing lang using 3G is free like checking your email, FB, twitter etc... but it's hard to do, it's like you're back on having cellphone way before. Mas mabilis pa gamitin ang smartphones mo. :)
Yes it's not colored. There's Nook color but it's not using an e-Ink screen but an LCD. Yes please back read...yung Page 1 reply #2 I hyperlinked some of the related issue about Kindle and other reader. Also read the other thread titled: Survey: What's your ebook reader. Ang dami doon minention na ibang mga klasing ebook readers. You're welcome.
Di ba it says on the manual na you can use it kahit nag-cha-charge, so sobrang nag-worry talaga ako. Mangiyak-ngiyak nga ko nun kasi nagp-flash siya (which is normal pala talaga). Naku nakailang beses ng sabi yung Ate ko to leave my Kindle be, and let it charge at jetlagged pa. :slap: Hopefully yours is simply jetlagged as well, hassle kung ibabalik mo pa sa US.

My Kindle 3 is really DOA. Walang flashing, walang charging light as in patay talaga:ranting: We have requested a refund and have been sent a return authorization and mailing label.
The only problem is that they will only credit $2.98 for the return postage which costs $49.00 which I consider grossly unfair since they charged me $11.98 to ship it within the US.
I have sent them a letter about this and still awaiting their response before doing anything drastic.
I am considering buying a Nook @$149.00 or just buy a CDR-King reader.
banana_republic 13th Dec 2010 Mon, 03:05 Goodnews! Amazon has informed me that they will refund all return shipping charges, not only $2.98:yipee:
maysapaw 13th Dec 2010 Mon, 11:07 congratulations!
better buy from sulit.com with your refund instead :)

sticky-feet 16th Dec 2010 Thu, 15:13 @ banana_republic: heehee, good for you at full refund! Sayang naman yung K3, sa tinagal tagal ng biyahe. Which nook are you gonna buy? Yung colored? ;)
slackerman02 16th Dec 2010 Thu, 17:45 where can i buy a cover for kindle 3.kahit anu brand o generic basta ung budget lng.hindi ung mga 3000php n cover n binebenta sa sulit.com grbe nmn cover lng half na ng price ng mismong kindle.
diokdin 16th Dec 2010 Thu, 17:54 @slackerman02, you can try ordering directly sa Amazon. I bet mas maraming choices. Sulit and ebay lang alam ko if dyan sa Pinas.
@banana_republic, good that you got yourself the full refund sis. Goodluck on your Nook. ;)

I have to give Amazon credit for the way they handle returns and customer complaints, medyo mahina lang talaga sila sa Quality Control...maybe it's because it's assembled in China.
Yung black and white na nook ang kinuha ko para e-ink technology pa rin.
banana_republic 16th Dec 2010 Thu, 23:12 @slackerman02, covers for Samsung Galaxy Tab, fits Kindle 3 and vice versa; try Games & Gadgets in any SM Mall.
@diokdin, thanks:) Hindi po ako sis; medyo mahinhin lang:p

zelle1016 28th Dec 2010 Tue, 11:22 hi fellow kindle users...
i need advice on book lights for the kindle...because i don't want to buy the lighted cover...(it's half the price of the kindle!)
like what book light to buy and where...
thanks!
sticky-feet 28th Dec 2010 Tue, 15:18 @ zelle: Hmm, ako I was thinking of buying one of those Octovo (http://www.sulit.com.ph/index.php/view+classifieds/id/2152832/Stylish+MacBook+Air+Sleeve,+iPhone+Cases,+Kindle+L ight?referralKeywords=octovo)s (assuming na kasya siya sa Kindle 3, kasi ang mga nakikita kong models is for Kindle 2 siya e).
Another option is buying/making the cover, yung mga leather notebook/diaries sa National, it's the same size as the K3 (kulang lang ng garter to hold the kindle) and then you can get one of those LED lights (http://cgi.ebay.ph/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220708869762&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_1575wt_905), Light Torch Robotic Lamp (http://www.sulit.com.ph/index.php/view+classifieds/id/2798580/Bright+LED+Clip+Reading+Book+%7C+Light+Torch+Robot ic+Lamp?referralKeywords=book+light), or Clip-ons (http://www.sulit.com.ph/index.php/view+classifieds/id/2954296/Clip+On+LED+Reading+Light?referralKeywords=book+li ght).
Hope this helps
slackerman02 29th Dec 2010 Wed, 00:35 finally went to the mall and brought my kindle, fitted a case meant for samsung galaxy tab and who knew its a fit!!
well hindi total fit medyo mas thick ung galaxy tab eh,pero ung length and height ok na ok na.waaaay cheaper kesa sa amazon leather na may defect pa ata sabe dun sa mga forum nila.
lots of choices like a book-type cover and sleeve type and a jelly case type all just to protect a galaxy tab and is now protecting my kindle.
take note kung ung jelly un bibilhin mo you will have to make some slight modifications like cutting a portion of the bottom part of the case because its blocking the power on/off button but its no big deal.
sticky-feet 29th Dec 2010 Wed, 00:58 Eep, finally got a cover  , i think it's for a PC tablet though (but it fits like a glove! 6 inches talaga siya! May nakita kasi ako sa eBay, kaso 7 inches yung binebenta). My sister saw it sa isang rundown mall earlier, and was hesitant to buy it at first baka hindi daw kasya sa Kindle ko. :) Got it for 490Php (Although she asked 650Php from me, kasama na daw shipping cost ko dun, :slap: curse older sisters)!
Ang ganda nung dating ng cover, very very sturdy, it's black with a red lining. Hindi nga siya smooth e, so no chance of it slipping. ;)
Tanong ko lang sa mga may cover for the Kindle ha, walang bang chance of the gadget overheating? Tinanggal ko kasi yung K3 ko after an hour, and the back felt kinda hot when I held it. :noidea: Kinda like a laptop, when it's on a flat surface with no ventilation of some sort.
diokdin 29th Dec 2010 Wed, 03:38 @zelle, regarding book light I use Travel Mighty Bright lights only cost $15-20.
@sticky-feet, I haven't notice my Kindle warming the book covers. Kahit how many hours ko na cyang ginagamit. :) I'll do a test and see if it does.
slackerman02 29th Dec 2010 Wed, 11:09 what?never ever did my kindle even remotely felt warm,ever.tucked in a bag,safe in the shelf,in the car,on the bed.even while charging from dead battery,even on wifi reading wikipedia,inside a sleeve of a netbook,inside a jelly case.
not once did it feel warm or hot.the processor is too bogged down and slow to heat up especially if all it processes is e-ink there is no strain on computing.
something must be up with yours....
sticky-feet 29th Dec 2010 Wed, 15:01 something must be up with yours....
@ slackerman: That sounds ominous. When i read that ^, narinig ko yung cue sa mga horror flicks - dun dun dun duuuun. :weep: Kaya nag-wonder ako kagabi e, kasi never ko din siya naramdaman kahit nakalagay sa sleeve. Am observing it though, hopefully one-time glitch lang siya.
@ diokdin: Kinabahan nga ako e, kasi if it has a tendency to warm when placed on a flat surface, you would've noticed/mentioned it. (Oh noes, sana wag ako yung exception, that would really suck.)
slackerman02 30th Dec 2010 Thu, 01:02 well ominous or not ahaha hope its a one time glitch,
ganyan tlga buhay weather weather lng
diokdin 1st Jan 2011 Sat, 04:29 @sticky-feet, I've been observing my Kindle but it's not warming up the book covers naman. Maybe your Kindle was directly hit in the sunlight kaya ganun? Hopefully nga one time glitch lang. :)

how's the observation of your kindle? did it warm-up again after a long use?
inobserve ko rin yung kindle ko and i notice na nagwarm sya ng unti when i was charging it. it was in its cover when i charged it.
pero di naman sya uminit kahit unti kapag nagbabasa lang ako (which is usually on for several hours).

re: kindle collection manager, if i just turn it off and then turn on, any changes i made on collection doesn't take effect...kailangan talaga eh i-restart ko (home, menu, setting, menu, restart).
so far, so good. nakaka 5 books na yata ako na natapos (well i started reading more books but stopped or changed books at one point :D).
mahirap din talaga kapag maraming choices

sticky-feet 15th Jan 2011 Sat, 09:37 :weep:
Kindle problem again. I was so used to my K3 being frozen and doing the hard reset (Holding the power switch for15 sec).
So last night, I finished loading new books via USB (which is what I usually do every other night). I usually check every new file to see if I converted it correctly, the page just froze and I noticed that the contrast seemed lighter and that the background of the text was gray. Waited for about 30 mins before doing the hard reset and it restarted. After it finished booting up, I checked the last file I opened and it froze again. (Sometimes when this happens I leave it be for the night, and reset it the following morning, and it's usually fine)
So last night, I got really worried because the screen was split (3/4 of it was a bit gray with blurry letters and the other side was the normal Kindle screen).
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/geeberspeepers/Argh571.jpg
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/geeberspeepers/Argh570.jpg
Not just that, the Warming Incident happened again only with the affected part, while the normal side seemed okay. I asked my sister to check and see if she also feels the warming side, and she said it felt a bit like a laptop. I kept checking it and after about 1 or 2 hours, it wasn't warm anymore so I tried resetting it again. It didn't work so left it for the night and now it still doesn't work, and the screen's still not right. :weep:
diokdin 15th Jan 2011 Sat, 11:15 @sticky-feet, email/call Amazon to have yours replace. They can do that it's still under the one year warranty. And attach the pictures so they will see too. They will replace your Kindle with a new one. Tell them about the warming up too. Hope you get your Kindle fixed/replaced. :)
slackerman02 15th Jan 2011 Sat, 14:33 its really too bad na hindi mo mapagana sticky feet...anyway try resetting to factory settings before finally calling amazon for a replacement.
1. Wake your Kindle from Sleep
2. Go to the home screen. Press 'Home'.
3. Press the Menu button, scroll to Settings.
4. Press the 'Menu' button again, select Reset to Factory Defaults
if that doesnt help any,,at least you tried.
sticky-feet 15th Jan 2011 Sat, 17:22 My Kindle came from the UK, so I thought of sending my Aunt an email first so she can be called from there, will send Amazon an email as well. :weep:
banana_republic 15th Jan 2011 Sat, 17:54 It was a nightmare having my defective K3 replaced.
Altho they finally agreed to refund the Return Shipping costs (P2420.00) , it was like pulling teeth and they would only refund it to my sister in the US with the attending hassle for my sister. Shipping it back here was another expense.
Overall I spent more than the P8000.00 I could have spent buying it here in the PH, not to mention aggravation talking to different call center agents in India and time lost.
I finally settled for a Nook, which is on the way now.
Kindle3 quality control still has a long way to go.
sticky-feet 15th Jan 2011 Sat, 20:16 @ banana_republic: They called you here in the Phils? Yah, I'm worried most about the shipping fees and whether it'll be reimbursed.
Okay so, now, I tried charging my K3 using the power adapter, and the featured screen is still frozen and looks like this even though it's not charging anymore (the screen still looks gray to me):
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/geeberspeepers/Argh580-1.jpg
I checked out Amazon's troubleshooting page, and one possible cause goes like this: "The Kindle may be affected by electromagnetic interference or screen may be defective." What could've caused an electromagnetic interference?
I'm a bit disappointed since I treat the gadget like a baby and my K3 never leaves the bed (only once when I went to the mall and brought it with me a month ago) :weep:
diokdin 16th Jan 2011 Sun, 04:39 Their customer service is actually good but maybe it's different international?

So my uncle talked to Amazon UK and sorted things out on the 20th (he chatted with a call center agent from Manila, then his call got transferred to Ireland), and they received a brand new Kindle on the 21st. That says a lot for Amazon.
They asked me to ship my damaged Kindle directly to Amazon and then I'd get reimbursed for the shipping cost, I think I'd probably get it as an Amazon credit. :(
:excited:

I'm glad you got your replacement quickly; maybe it's because your uncle had the replacement charged to his credit card and would be reimbursed once the defective K3 has been received by Amazon.
In my case, I wanted a complete refund because I no longer trusted the quality control of Amazon and didn't want another one to die on me.
But buying it locally @P8000 seems to be a better and cheaper option.
sticky-feet 24th Jan 2011 Mon, 01:22 @ banana_republic: Hmm, I didn't see any note on the replacement being charged via credit card, but I'll ask. In what form did you get your refund?
I sent Amazon a message regarding their Quality Control. :noidea:
When my Kindle died on me, I was thinking of buying a Sony Reader instead, though a bit more expensive. Did you get your Nook already?
kinkinny 24th Jan 2011 Mon, 09:26 I'm already on my 2nd kindle replacement in 12months.
The first time it broke, I sent them a tech support request. At first they insisted I call them, but after I made it clear I am unable to make overseas calls, they just troubleshooted it via email. After exhausting all possibilities, they decided I was entitled to a replacement. The biggest thing I had to hurdle was that the replacement could only be sent to a US address, so I had it sent to the house of a friend in the states. She got it within 48hours actually. I just arranged for her to send it to me here, but that's another story. I also had to ship the defective kindle to amazon using international ems, which cost about 1k Php (without the box, I just wrapped the unit in bubblewrap) and Amazon refunded me the amount in store credit.
Pretty much same story the 2nd time it happened. I have a Kindle2 global btw.
sticky-feet 24th Jan 2011 Mon, 11:54 @ banana_republic and kinkinny: When you returned your Kindle, it has to be shipped directly to Amazon right? Am having a liiiiittle problem with regards to the declared value and other stuff since apparently FedEx only accounts for $99. How much did you declare the device?
Yah, my aunt would have to ship it to me as well and she's thinking of using the reimbursed shipping cost. Holy crappo, in store credit? The shipping cost I'm facing is about half the price of the Kindle. I checked out international ems, and they don't seem to ship to the UK.
banana_republic 24th Jan 2011 Mon, 18:34 @sticky-feet: I shipped my K3 directly to Amazon via LBC . Like Fedex they would only insure it for PHP 6000.00 against loss; they won't insure or accept electronic items for damage so you have to insist that the item is defective and is being sent back for replacement.
You also have to deplete the battery and tell them that the battery is dead as a reason for returning it since they also refuse to accept items with batteries in them.
I paid them PHP 2,420.00 for shipment to Amazon in Lexington KY and it was delivered in 3 days. The refund was issued in a weeks time.
Call LBC at this No. (02) 8585-999 and get a quotation from them. Altho the packaging says
2 lbs it's really 1.6 lbs when we weighed it; then bring it to your nearest LBC branch.
Good luck.
P.S. My nook has arrived in my sister's place and awaiting for someone to bring it over.
P.P.S. I insisted that I wanted the refund be made to the credit card account used to purchase the K3. Like kinkinny I also told them that I had no access to a phone and they should contact me by e-mail.

Kahit sa akin mabagal ang Symbianize lately, their hosting must have been having some bandwidth issues.
diokdin 25th Jan 2011 Tue, 01:37 Yeah, symbianize been having problems and it's getting worst. Palagi nalang server busy. If it's the cost issue, I donate a small amount to help. But since our community is getting bigger. I guess we need more donations so we can maintain this one.
I don't want symbianize to stop. Oo nga how do we know if symbianize will make a new one. Pwede paki email us if ever symbianize will make a new website. Yung email na ginamit namin when we registered here.
slackerman02 25th Jan 2011 Tue, 08:38 yeah malas malas nlng ung ibang kindle defective, thank goodness di pa ngbrebreakdown ang kindle q.id hate to go through all the trouble of shipping it back to them and getting a replacement, pero bilib aq na dpt you pay for what you get.and 139$ is good enough for getting a quality product in kindle.dpat hindi ngkakaganito ang mga product ng amazon,,pero i guess ganun talaga everything is made in china now a days even ipods, laptops, all those gadgets,so there is always the threat of a defective unit.

sticky-feet 26th Jan 2011 Wed, 19:12 Whew, was finally able to ship the Kindle via Fedex. Cost me 3823Php :( The address they gave me was Fife, Glenrothes UK (It sounds like somewhere in Scotland). Anyhow, the declared value was $99, hopefully there won't be any trouble in the UK Customs etc.
banana_republic 26th Jan 2011 Wed, 23:09 Whew, was finally able to ship the Kindle via Fedex. Cost me 3823Php :( The address they gave me was Fife, Glenrothes UK (It sounds like somewhere in Scotland). Anyhow, the declared value was $99, hopefully there won't be any trouble in the UK Customs etc.
Not to worry, your PHP 3823 will be fully refunded by Amazon, but you will be out-of-pocket for sending the replacement to the PH from UK not to mention the cost of sending it to the PH the first time which is not refundable.
Declared value is only for insurance purposes; the only time you will encounter a problem with the $99.00 valuation is if the shipment gets lost and Fedex will only reimburse you for $99.00.
