PLACE OF BIRTH: New Orleans, Louisiana FAMILY

BACKGROUND: Mahalia was the third child to John A. Jackson, a barber and preacher, and Charity Clark, who died at the age of 25 when Mahalia was four years old. In 1916, her father sent her to live with her aunt Mahalia "Duke" Paul. Aunt Duke didn't allow secular music in her house, but Mahalia's cousin would sneak in records. Even at a very young age, Mahalia had a booming voice and she would sing hymns and old-time gospel tunes around the house.

EDUCATION: Mahalia attended the McDonough School No. 24 in New Orleans through the eighth grade.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Mahalia Jackson is viewed by many as the pinnacle of gospel music. Her singing began at the age of four in her church, the Plymouth Rock Baptist Church in New Orleans. Her early style blended the freedom and power of gospel with the stricter style of the Baptist Church. As a teenager, through her cousin's aid, she was influenced by such famous singers as Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Enrico Caruso and Ma Rainey, and her own style began to emerge into a more soulful expression.
In 1927, at the age of 16, she moved to Chicago and found work as a domestic. But soon after, she found plenty of work as a soloist at churches and funerals after joining the Greater Salem Baptist Church choir. Her unique contralto voice caught the attention of many small churches from coast to coast. Larger, more formal churches frowned upon her energetic renditions of songs. After performing with the Prince Johnson Singers, she began recording for Decca Records in 1937. When the records did not sell as well as expected, she became a beautician. However, after five years of touring with composer Thomas A. Dorsey at gospel tents and churches, Mahalia's popularity and success garnered her another record contract, this time with Apollo Records, from 1946 to 1954. She then switched to Columbia Records, from 1954 to 1967, where she attained broad recognition as a spiritual singer.
Throughout the 1950s, Mahalia's voice was heard on radio, television and concert halls around the world. Her shows were packed in Europe, and her audience very enthusiastic at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, at a special all-gospel program she requested. In 1954, she began hosting her own Sunday night radio show for CBS. She performed on the Ed Sullivan show in 1956 where she catapulted gospel music into America's mainstream. She sang for President Dwight Eisenhower and at John F. Kennedy's inaugural ball in 1960.
From the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott until her death, Mahalia was very prominent in the Civil Rights Movement. Very close with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she often performed at his rallies--even singing an old slave spiritual before his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington in 1963. She also sang at his funeral five years later.
Despite her doctors ordering her to slow down, Mahalia refused and collapsed while on tour in Munich in 1971. She died of heart failure on January 27, 1972, at her home in Evergreen Park, Illinois.

LEGACY & HONORS:
Mahalia Jackson is widely regarded as the greatest gospel singer in history and one of the great voices of the twentieth century. Her music was never played widely on any but traditional gospel and traditional Christian radio stations. Her music was heard for decades on Family Radio. Her good friend Martin Luther King Jr said, "A voice like hers comes along once in a millennium."
In addition to sharing her singing talent with the world, she mentored the extraordinarily gifted Aretha Franklin. Mahalia was also good friends with Dorothy Norwood and fellow Chicago-based gospel singer Albertina Walker (who is the present "Queen of Gospel Music", heir to Mahalia's legacy.) She also discovered a young Della Reese. Jackson was present at the opening night of Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music in December 1957.[17]
On the twentieth anniversary of her passing, Smithsonian Folkways Recording commemorated Jackson with the album, I Sing Because I'm Happy, which includes interviews about her childhood conducted by Jules Scherwin.
The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences created the Gospel Music or Other Religious Recording category for Mahalia making her the first Gospel Music Artist to win the prestigeous Grammy Award. She performed for Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. She has also given performances for Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill of the U.K., the King and Queen of Denmark, the Presidents of France and Liberia, the Empress of Japan, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India, the prime ministers of several Caribbean islands and several other heads of state and political figures worldwide.
Among Mahalia's surviving relatives is her great-nephew, Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger.
A prominent namesake in her native New Orleans is the Mahalia Jackson Theatre for the Performing Arts, which was remodeled and reopened on 2009 January 17 with a gala ceremony featuring Placido Domingo, Patricia Clarkson, and the New Orleans Opera directed by Robert Dyall.

Curious that Mandisa Hundley was among the first castaways from the 2006 finals of American Idol, yet she's one of the last runner-ups to release her album. It wasn't sub-par singing that sent the powerhouse vocalist home early, but unusual song choices (and a misunderstanding among some of the show's fans). Though she dazzled whenever she stuck to soul, urban, and pop, she struggled whenever the night's theme drew her out of her comfort zone. Mandisa's long-awaited debut True Beauty resembles her Idol run in the same way.

EMI pulled all the stops to make the disc an event, hiring Christian music's hottest producers (Brown Bannister, Double Dutch, Christopher Stevens), songwriters (Cindy Morgan, Matthew West, Sam Mizell), and session players. The results show. By Christian pop standards, True Beauty sparkles, especially when Mandisa is in her urban-pop turf, like the irresistible title track, the sassy "Only You," and the "I'm Every Woman" knockoff "Love Somebody" (featuring tobyMac). Especially noteworthy is Mandisa's rendition of Mary Mary's "Shackles"—judges panned her cover on Idol, but this version of the hit rivals the original by infusing '70s-flavored R&B with horns.

Elsewhere, Mandisa seems out of her element. Catchy as it may be, "Only the World" sounds more like an Avalon leftover than a soul sister's smash. The same is true of "Voice of a Savior," "Unrestrained," and "Steal My Joy"—all middling, run-of-the-mill AC that fails to take off. And while "Oh, My Lord" (with the Fisk Jubilee Singers) is intended as an homage, it ends up sounding like a messy, quasi spiritual that's out of place here.

The vocalist redeems herself with the heavenly "God Speaking," a stirring and soaring power ballad, but the album as a whole never quite seems to gel. Just as she deserved to go further in the Idol finals, a voice like Mandisa's deserves stronger material, or at least a musical identity that matches her soulfulness.

If there was one strike against Melinda Doolittle's phenomenal run on the sixth season of American Idol, it was her apparent reluctance to take a compliment. She was a powerhouse on the stage—Simon went as far as saying she should've won the competition—but her aw-shucks demeanor often belied her rising star.

Not so on Coming Back to You, her long-in-the-making solo debut. Prior to Idol, Doolittle made a name for herself singing backup for the likes of Michael McDonald, Aaron Neville, and a host of CCM mainstays, but here she takes center stage with poise, grabbing hold of the microphone with the sass and strut of a soul diva.

Good for her. Most post-Idol releases tend to safely stay within the assembly-line comfort of commercial pop. But Doolittle goes for the road less traveled, reaching back into the R&B songbooks of yesteryear and refashioning the tunes, most of them covers, in a way that's in step with the retro-soul resurgence that Amy Winehouse and others have brought back in vogue.

Most audiences will relish the dusty, near-analog glow cast by the disc, a throwback delight with nods to the likes of Johnny Mathis ("The Best of Everything"), Doris Day ("I'll Never Stop Loving You"), and Sara Vaughan ("Wonder Why"). Doolittle savors every moment, inhabiting each song like only she knows how. However, it seems that in the process, she forgets a little bit about her gospel roots. While empowering, Coming Back to You alludes to the singer's faith only in passing.

Still, there's something wildly magnetic about the music and Doolittle's self-assuredness that render Coming Back to You one of the most complete, unified recordings to emerge from the ranks of American Idol. It's at once anachronistic and current—the type of effort that only a veteran performer could really pull off.

Sounds like … the unmistakable gospel/R&B stamp of the Clark family dynasty—The Clark Sisters, Karen Clark-Sheard, and Kierra "KiKi" Sheard.

At a glance … like her sister Karen, Dorinda Clark-Cole mixes old and new in an album that also happens to be her most complete to date.

After the monster year the Clark Sisters had in 2007—the biggest in their nearly 30-year run—Dorinda Clark-Cole seems primed for the release of her third solo album, Take It Back. The timing is certainly strange, since the group is still touring and even planning a follow-up to their watershed reunion disc, Live—One Last Time. But the increased attention certainly couldn't hurt, especially now that Clark-Cole is, among other distinctions, a Grammy winner.

While her previous efforts were predominantly live projects, Take It Back brings Clark-Cole's familiar contemporary gospel style into the studio. The new setting gives the album more containment, which at times is needed in the case of a Clark recording. Like the rest of her pedigree, Clark-Cole is an excellent vocalist, adept at delivering jazzed-out vocal runs and scats—impressive skills that, while trademark, can get out of hand if they're not tempered properly.

Producer Asaph Ward is good at keeping things in check, and he gives Clark-Cole top-notch material upon which to work her acrobatics. There's a fair share of high-flight contemporary gospel ("No Weapon," "Make Me Real"), which Clark-Cole handles like a pro, but it's the hand-clapping, COGIC-styled gospel that the singer absolutely owns. The devil-bashing title track is the prime example—a toe-tapping song of victory that would make the singer's mother (the late gospel pioneer Mattie Moss Clark) smile.

Clark-Cole tries moving outside of her comfort zone, too, like the stunning "Yesterday," a lovely ballad that feels lifted from her sister Karen's 2nd Chance album. Another knockout is the breezy "Faithful," a terrific marriage of classic harmonies, urban finesse, and slick funk grooves. And she even aims at a younger demographic with "Return" and "It's Okay," the latter a modern R&B track featuring niece Kierra "KiKi" Sheard. It all amounts to the most complete Clark-Cole album to date—as well as a good crash lesson on how the Clark sound has evolved over the years.
