About the Artist
The daughter of a pastor/musician father and an evangelist/singer mother, Kim Burrell started her musical career with the Greater Emmanuel COGIC Choir in her native Houston, Texas. The musician, writer/producer, and preacher has shared the stage with the biggest names in gospel music: Shirley Caesar, Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, and Kirk Franklin among others. She has also worked with such secular artists as Missy Elliot, Whitney Houston, and Stevie Wonder. Kim overwhelmed the music industry on Tommy Boy Gospel with such hit projects as Everlasting Live and Kim Burrell Live.

At a glance … Light in the Darkness is the best gospel-based worship recording since Israel's classic Live from Another Level.

Despite the scope of the worship music landscape, only a few worship leaders truly venture out in leading worship to a sound that's evocative of every tongue, tribe, and nation. Vegas-based worship leader Freddy Rodriguez joins that small chorus of cross-cultural temple minstrels with his debut for Integrity Music, Light in the Darkness.

With the disc, it's almost as if Rodriguez is coming full circle. According to his bio, the album that revolutionized his outlook on worship was God Is Able, the 1994 recording by Ron Kenoly, another Integrity artist. But there's more: Rodriguez was in attendance at the live taping of New Season, the Integrity debut by gospel-worship giant Israel & New Breed.

Rodriguez wears these degrees of separation proudly on his lapel, as Light in the Darkness sounds every bit as exciting and worshipful as those two worshippers in their prime. For a new artist, Rodriguez is as cosmopolitan as a praise leader can get, moving fluidly through a litany of sensibilities—contemporary gospel, Latin, pop/rock, funk—as if he were one of the founding fathers of multiethnic praise and worship.

Obviously, that's not the case, which explains why Rodriguez can be a little too deliberate about his influences. The driving "No Other Name," for example, is almost a replica of "Friend of God"—the feel, tempo, and dynamics of the song are patterned exactly after the classic Israel & New Breed tune.

But that's only one song out of a baker's dozen that includes terrific standouts like the gospel-friendly opener "We Lift Our Hands," the Santana-inspired "Lord You Are Amazing," and the swaying ballad "I Will Run." As Rodriguez and his praise ensemble slow things down, they prove extremely adept at guiding the saints into a deeper time of worship in songs like the disarmingly beautiful "Fallen" and the choir-rich "Alone with You."

Both seamless and instrumentally rich, these songs render Light in the Darkness one of the most urbane live recordings to ever emerge from the worship movement. If Rodriguez keeps this pace, he could easily become one of its top exponents. www.christianitytoday.com

Even though this is technically VOTA's debut disc, the band was previously known as Casting Pearls but changed its moniker due to obvious confusion with Casting Crowns. Nonetheless, the original act's membership remains intact featuring front man/guitarist Bryan Olesen, bassist Case Maranville and drummer Scott Rutz, alongside brand new addition Riley Friesen on guitars and keyboards.

Besides the new name and extra player, this self-titled CD also finds the alternative rock act earning a slight sonic face lift, kicking up the juice in both their arena rock and in their ability to fill the dance floor.

"Hard To Believe" launches the collection with jarring guitars, monstrous melodies and hooks galore, finding justifiable company alongside Foo Fighters, Switchfoot, or Sanctus Real. "Not Finished" continues with crunching guitar strums and Olesen's mighty shouts—also highly reminiscent of Jeff Buckley or Seven Day Jesus front man Brian McSweeney.

VOTA also explores soulful pop and dance rock with "Give It to Me," which will likely to fall in favor with fans of Maroon 5, Franz Ferdinand, or '90s era Newsboys. Outside of embarking on a spring tour with that latter act, Olesen also served as the group's guitarist during its Adoration era and showcases that same vertical approach in the contiguously catchy "Love's Taken Over" and "I'll Go."

The Clark Sisters are a two-time Grammy Award winning, American gospel vocal group consisting of four sisters: Elbernita "Twinkie" Clark, Jacky Clark Chisholm, Dorinda Clark Cole, and Karen Clark Sheard. A fifth member, Denise Clark Bradford, no longer performs with the group. The Clark Sisters were born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. They each began singing at an early age and by the late 1960s they were all performing together in church services, usually singing songs written and arranged by their mother. A few years later, Dr. Mattie Moss Clark turned over control of the group to Twinkie, who would then go on to write, arrange, conduct and produce all of the Clark Sisters recordings. At a glance … as impressive as her careers in Broadway and R&B have been thus far, Heather Headley's striking gospel debut positions her as one of the genre's most sophisticated performers.

Unless you're a hardcore follower of R&B or Broadway musicals, chances are the name Heather Headley doesn't ring a bell. Even in the urban realm, she's far from a fixture, having released two albums (2002's This Is Who I Am and 2006's In My Mind) that were favorably received but neither generated the en-masse euphoria of Beyoncé or Alicia Keys—too bad, because she sings circles around both.

Headley's Broadway credentials are a different story. After her family left their native Trinidad for Fort Wayne, Indiana, she joined her high school choir and then went on to study musical theatre in college. In 1997, she joined the premiering cast of The Lion King in the role of Nala, and in 2000, she was asked to play the title role of Aida, another Elton John/Tim Rice musical. That gig ultimately earned her a Tony—Broadway's highest honor.

In a seamless fusion, both her soulfulness and her powerhouse come together on Audience of One, Headley's gospel debut. As produced by Keith Thomas (Whitney Houston, Yolanda Adams), the set places her on the same stylistic wavelength as CeCe Winans—worshipful and pop-infused, but never overly gospelized.

There are some strains of contemporary gospel, like the spiritual "I Know the Lord Will Make a Way" and a delightful, triple-timed rendition of "Here I Am to Worship," but they're not the norm. Instead, Headley's flawless vocals shine brightest atop glorious, gospel-pop confections, like the sobering "Simply Redeemed," an apologetic case for faith, and "Jesus Is Love," a cover of the Commodores' hit sung as a duet with labelmate Smokie Norful.

The price of admission to this Audience of One, though, is paid by cuts where Headley evinces the depth of her rich, immensely nuanced gift, as in the stunning "Hymn Medley" and the soaring ballad "Running Back to You"—two show-stopping performances that could give other pop divas a run for their money. And you wouldn't think she'd make it her own, but she totally kills a dramatic version of "The Power of the Cross," by modern hymnwriters Keith Getty and Stuart Townend.

As of now, it's unclear whether Audience of One is a one-off gospel recording for the singer, but here's hoping there's more where this came from. It's Not Over bridges Karen Clark Sheard's past and future. It's her return to Word—the Clark Sisters' label during the 1980s—and her first album with producers Aaron Lindsey and Israel Houghton, following a successful partnership with Donald Lawrence. Sonically, it's a full-on transition into gospel-infused praise and worship with hints of old-school sanctified singing.

It's Not Over also includes three well-produced studio tracks, two produced by PAJAM, and one by Clark Sheard's son, J. Drew. Still, the live portion of the album could easily stand alone.

The CD maintains the live energy throughout, starting with the bass-driven P-W funk of "Rejoice and Be Glad," featuring several of Clark Sheard's trademark churchified jazz-libs. "I Never Will/You Brought the Sunshine" is a live gospel mash-up (Need proof? Hum "You Brought the Sunshine" over the beginning of the track, then pick it up again as Sheard swings lightly into the 1983 hit.).Other highlights include "Favor," incorporating Clark Sheard's vocal echo; the artfully arranged triple-medley in the middle of the album, which includes the COGIC (Church of God in Christ) praise-break "Hallelujah;" and "It's Not Over," reprised from 2002's Second Chance.

A strength of the album—not uncommon when Lindsey and Houghton are on hand—is that you can feel the live experience. Listen for the audience responding with worshipful shouts during "Oh the Glory." Hear their delight at Clark Sheard's vocal acrobatics. Note the musical director's "Shhhh" during a muted moment. Catch a background vocalist's stray riff.
