At a Glance … Mercy is often too similar sounding and repetitive, but it sounds great, and there's enough here that's original and promising.

Eoghan Heaslip is neither a typo nor a character name from Lord of the Rings — it's actually Irish. Acclaimed by such respected worship leaders as David Ruis and Brian Doerksen, "Owen Heeslip" hails from Dublin where he serves as a worship leader and music director at CORE (City Outreach through Renewal and Evangelism) Church, whose mission is to "be a people who would express the Kingdom of God in a way that is relevant to this generation." Influenced equally by mainstream artists (David Gray, U2, Relish) and worship leaders (David Ruis, Brian Doerksen, Martin Smith), Eoghan studied music at the Vineyard School of Worship in Vancouver, British Columbia, and has been referred to by some as "the Matt Redman of Ireland." After independently recording his debut release "Deeper Still," Eoghan was signed to Hosanna!/Integrity to release his national debut, Mercy, which was recorded live at his home church and was produced by Paul Mills (who also helmed the worship projects Let the River Flow and Revival in Belfast).

Mercy generally sounds the same throughout the album — a modern worship band led by Eoghan's acoustic guitar and highlighted by rhythm and keyboard programming effects. Think of him as a less aggressive David Crowder Band or a more energetic Tim Hughes. Naturally a live album is going to sound homogenous throughout, but the sameness also permeates the songwriting. Half of the album's thirteen tracks have the same upbeat, modern worship feel reminiscent of generic Vineyard worship. "All I Want to Do" is a simple but catchy opening worship song, and "All That Matters" is highlighted by a slick bass groove. "A Shield About Me (Lord You Are So Good)" is inspired by the Psalms, while "Glorious" draws from Revelation. "Faithful" exalts the Lord in a song of thankfulness and hope, and "Your Love" glorifies Jesus for all he accomplished on the cross with familiar words of worship — "Your love is higher than the mountains / Your love is deeper than the seas." Independently, the tracks are enjoyably simple and energetic expressions of praise. Collectively, the songs begin to blur together in their simplicity and similarity.

The sound doesn't vary until the sixth track in which Eoghan leads the worshipers in a somewhat improvised chorus of "O Come Let Us Adore Him," taken from the Christmas carol "O Come All Ye Faithful." This is followed by the first ballad of the album, "True Intimacy," a beautiful Vineyard-styled prayer song similar in theme to "Hungry" and "Breathe." There is an especially great rhythmic groove to "Arise King of Kings" that sets it apart from the other upbeat originals; it's a prayerful invocation co- written by Eoghan's wife Becky, who sings with the worship team. "Lord It's Your Mercy" is also quite catchy, distinguishing itself with a thoughtful chorus — "Lord it's Your selflessness that covers my weakness … it's Your faithfulness that speaks of Your greatness." Similar depth in writing is expressed in "The Father's Love," a fine ballad co-written by Brian Doerksen that relays an intimate portrait of our relationship to God the Father.

Eoghan's album has just two cover songs, both at the end of Mercy and, coincidentally, both featured studio tracks on Michael W. Smith's Worship Again. I have to credit Smitty with introducing me to Steve Merkel's "Lord Have Mercy," an excellent and poignantly worded song of confession, but Eoghan's version is simpler and therefore less intimidating. By toning down the orchestration he makes it more intimate and rhythmic, making it a more conventional worship song to be used in the average church service. Also included is Tim Hughes's "Here I Am to Worship," an already over-recorded song in its first year of release. Nevertheless, this is one of the better and more passionate versions available, surpassed only by Chris Tomlin's rendition on the Passion: Our Love Is Loud album.

Realistically speaking, Eoghan's songwriting is too simplistic and repetitive to earn him the same widespread recognition as Matt Redman, but he's still a young, burgeoning songwriter who offers more than enough reasons to pay attention to his work. The songs may blur together, but they are also straightforward, honest, and quite frankly sound terrific. They also demonstrate thought and passion instead of recycling worship clichés. Top all of that off with a CD booklet that includes track-by-track artist commentary and an enhanced disc with chord charts and lyrics, and you have a promising new worship leader with an album focused squarely on edifying the church while glorifying God. At a glance … with his sophomore effort, Heaslip reveals himself as a worship leader as capable as any of his peers today.

We first met Eoghan Heaslip (first name pronounced "Owen") in 2002 as Ireland's answer to British worship leader Matt Redman. Heaslip's debut, Mercy, while promising, also suffered from a sameness in sound throughout. His follow-up, Grace In The Wilderness, shows clear improvement.

It's not that Heaslip has hit on something that hasn't been heard before. Though not too clichéd, the lyrics do rely heavily on Scripture and familiar worship phrasing. Like many modern worshipers today, he's discovered the powerful ambience found in the music of Delirious and Coldplay—the stuff often imitated by artists such as Tim Hughes, By the Tree, and Jason Morant to varying degrees of success. The strong opener "Let Your Name Be Glorified" has that same pounding eighth-note ballad feel characteristic of the British worship sound.

As for Heaslip's writing, it resembles a combination of Redman and Paul Baloche. Sure enough, the melancholic yet comforting title track was co-written with Redman, and Heaslip covers Baloche's fair ballad "Offering." But the emerging worship leader does it all very well, improving on recent albums by Redman and Hughes with songs that are less repetitive, more accessible, and more effective in communicating the message of worshiping through life's valleys—try to remain unmoved after hearing "Come and Heal Us."

Heaslip also shines in the way he merges the traditional into the contemporary. "Holy Is The Lord" is a simple but enjoyable Delirious-styled remake of the hymn "From All That Dwell Below the Skies," and there's also a good rhythmic remake of the "Doxology." At a glance … right down to thematic approach, Red doesn't fix what ain't broken, yet it still manages to provide a fiercer, more muscular version of itself.

Of the dozens of hopefuls that enter the crowded Christian rock realm, Red is, hands down, the biggest success story of the past few years. End of Silence, the group's 2006 debut, moved more than a quarter-million units, fueled by a slew of hits at Christian rock radio, which loved the band's fierce, post-grunge anthems.

Red's Christian rock momentum and later partnership with Epic Records landed the foursome a number of Top 15 hits at mainstream rock radio, as well as touring opportunities with the likes of Papa Roach, Staind, Puddle of Mudd, and Seether, among others. Not a bad résumé for relative newcomers. And the success is continuing. Such is the demand for Red's stuff that the first single from their new album, Innocence & Instinct, skyrocketed to the summit of the Christian rock chart in its first week—a feat without precedent.

The new album doesn't mess with Red's proven End of Silence sound—but does make it slightly bigger and bolder. Red remains rooted in a highly commercial, stylized brand of post-grunge, with chugging hard rock riffs, pummeling rhythms, and subtle electronic ripple. It all underpins frontman Michael Barnes' deft changeovers from melodic singing to visceral screaming. (If I didn't know any better, I'd say Red sounds just like Linkin Park, except with less rap and more optimism.)

It's an engrossing, impenetrable sound, made all the more dramatic by Red's love of the symphonic—all the songs, without fail, feature cinematic string flourishes. Producer Rob Graves may have something to do with that, as most of his productions, whether he's manning the boards for Natalie Grant or for a rock act, employ orchestral elements for added effect. Here, the technique hits a plateau in the striking "Confession," a fast-paced rock barrage whose last few seconds have enough punch to leave you slack-jawed.

Thematically, it's unclear exactly why Red based Innocence & Instinct on Dante's "Inferno." The gloomy epic poem, the first movement off the Italian poet's sprawling Divine Comedy, is all about the consequences of sin. However, Dante's hell is a cause-and-effect netherworld where sins, not the absence of a walk with Christ, are what keep the human soul from heaven.

In practice, Red doesn't go that deep in its exploration of "Inferno," or Scripture, for that matter—Romans 7 is entirely more compelling than this poem as far as the moral tug-of-war between flesh and Spirit. But at least the band remains loosely conceptual as it wrestles nondescript personal demons ("Death of Me"), laments the endless human struggle ("Fight Inside," "Confession"), and looks to God for another chance at life ("Start Again").

While it may seem to a very different sound for Red, their soaring cover of Duran Duran's "Ordinary World" here actually works sonically and thematically. The lyrics about lost love could easily be viewed as a heart's helpless attempt to make sense of a world without a relationship with the Lord. (In fact, the "You" in the lyrics happens to be capitalized.)

Innocent & Instinct may very well become the best-selling Christian rock album of the year. No, it's not the second-coming of Christian rock, but in its familiarity it pushes enough right buttons to continue to establish Red as one of the hottest new power players in the genre. Sounds like … New Life Church, Hillsong Australia, Gateway Worship, Passion, and other churches and ministries providing new songs of praise to the church at large.

At a glance … it's not earth-shattering, but Make You Known is otherwise a serviceable collection of worship choruses for the contemporary church.

After a relatively quiet 2007, Integrity Music's GlobalWorshipNow.com initiative picks up again with Lakeview Church's Make You Known. If we go by imaging alone, the church appears to fall squarely in line with its brethren at Hillsong or New Life Church—mega-church praise where the worship team, band, and choir are greater in number than the average congregation size.

But Lakeview says it isn't simply following fads. Established in 1918, it wasn't until 2001 when the now 85-year-old church began to experience a new understanding of what worship truly means. With that came a transition to a more contemporary worship style, as well as a surge of creativity and artistic expression among the church's ranks. As a result, the church has recorded a new live album every year since, including Make You Known.

At the outset, the church never veers far from the musical direction established by Passion or Hillsong United—big, stadium-sized pop/rock anthems with a few too many nods to vintage U2 to ignore. "No Greater Thing," "Your Love Is Better" and "I Want to Be With You" follow this mold all too closely, but particularly "I Want to Be With You," whose guitar riffs come straight from The Edge's playbook. That's not to say these songs aren't serviceable; if anything, their familiarity could be just what some of today's churches crave.

Yet what Lakeview lacks in distinction during the livelier tracks is made up for when things slow down. Besides utilizing a noticeably capable Latin percussionist for a number of the quieter moments, there are some great ballads to be found here, especially the moving "The Cross that Bears Your Name" and the stripped-down "Surrender"—both ready and waiting to be discovered by worship leaders nationwide. The more Lakeview works towards fine-tuning these strengths, the more it'll sharpen its own voice in the long run. - christianitytoday.com

It was an incredible night as Abundant Life Church recorded their live album 'Send Me'. Thousands gathered to make history as they recorded what many said is their best album to date.

From the first note of the opening song 'Take all the Glory', the place was filled with a deep sense of God's presence.

'Send Me', the title track , is all about a church who desires to go and make a difference in our generation. The prayer for this album is that a send me attitude will become the spirit of God's people everywhere.
