probly the biggest changes would be the banning of traction control, launch control and fully automatic gearboxes.
here's a brief explanation of what the three systems do:
Traction control limits the spinning of the rear tires as a driver accelerates out of a corner. Without traction control, the driver has to use all his skill and finesse to feed the 900 horsepower of a F1 V10 engine to the rear tires. With traction control, the computer does the work and the driver just plants the accelerator pedal on the floor.
Launch control is used at the start of the race. F1 cars use a standing start, and with launch control a driver doesn't have to balance easing out the clutch, pushing the accelerator and changing gears. All he does is turn on the system and put his right foot to the floor.
Semiautomatic gearboxes have been around F1 for more than a decade. The driver uses the clutch (mounted on a lever on the steering wheel these days) to get the car moving. After that, he does not use the clutch and changes gears by flicking a lever behind the steering wheel. With a fully automatic gearbox, the driver doesn't even need to flick the levers.
personally, i think the changes are a good idea and they will definitely make F1 more exciting. plus mashoshowcase na tlga ung talent ng mga drivers.

silver_surfer 15th Mar '08 Sat, 18:27 Qualifying - selected driver quotes
With world champion Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari stumbling at the first hurdle, qualifying in Melbourne was an exciting time, with McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton eventually ending the day on pole. All 22 drivers report back on Saturday’s action…
Lewis Hamilton, McLaren (1st, Q3 - 1m 26.714s):
“I couldn’t have wished for a better start to the season, and it’s great to see Heikki (Kovalainen) and my friend Robert (Kubica) doing well, and the team has done a super job in getting all the necessary parts ready in time. During Q1 I was held up in traffic, but everything just came together when it mattered in Q3. The track conditions were a bit easier today compared to yesterday as it wasn’t as hot. I think the start will be interesting tomorrow due to the change in regulations. Last year it was relatively easy where as now it’s dependent on the driver, so I want to get that right. Fortunately I am starting from the clean side of the track for once, and hopefully that will help a bit, but it will be a long and tough race.”
Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber (2nd, Q3 - 1m 26.869s):
"P2 is a great achievement for the whole team, and that's a good start to the season! I took a lot of risks in the second run of Q3, but finally it didn't pay off. I went wide in corner twelve and ran on the artificial grass. This cost me between two and three tenths of a second and maybe pole position. We had quite a difficult day yesterday, but we were able to make a lot of progress. The F1.08 is a very quick car, but quite delicate to set-up and to drive. When I look back on what level we started testing, I have to give a big compliment to the whole team in Munich and Hinwil. Everybody worked hard analysing the problems and improving the car."
Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren (3rd, Q3 - 1m 27.079s):
“I am pleased to qualify third, but there is still room for improvement. It was a fairly smooth lap, and the balance of the car felt good. At the end I didn’t nail a perfect lap, but throughout the weekend I have just been taking things steady, not making any mistakes and keep pushing harder and harder. Last year I didn’t make the best start to the season, so today’s result is a great beginning to my career as a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver. The guys in the team are working so hard, staying at the track until the early hours this morning fixing a small problem with the gearbox - that is dedication for you. I think we are looking strong for the race, and I am looking forward to tomorrow.”
Felipe Massa, Ferrari (4th, Q3 - 1m 27.178s):
"I failed to get the most out of my final set of tyres for the day, because I had traffic on my out-lap and this meant I was unable to get the tyres up to temperature. I am happy with the handling of the car, which is well balanced and we know we can run at a good race pace. It will be a very tough race, especially as we can expect high temperatures. Anything can happen and I think I can fight for the very top places."
Earl 15th Mar '08 Sat, 23:05  good start for mclaren this season... and ke lewis.. woot! :celebrate:
i hope Heikki Kovalainen will pass robert kubica tomorrow.. para Mclaren 1 & 2! :celebrate:

Kimi Räikkönen this week eased his frustration following a miserable first race as reigning
world champion apparently by embarking on an expensive shopping spree.
The Ferrari driver, who lives in Switzerland, bought a luxurious unit on the beachfront
of the Thai holiday island Phuket, for an estimated (US) $1.5m.

kimi 23rd Mar '08 Sun, 00:27 Hamilton and Kovalainen penalized five grid places
Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen will drop five grid places for Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix after the duo were found guilty of impeding Nick Heidfeld and Fernando Alonso.
The incident occurred when both drivers slowed down after crossing the line with seconds left of qualifying. By remaining on the racing line, they were adjudged to have impeded Heidfeld and Alonso, who were starting their final flying laps.
Hamilton will now begin the 56-lap race from ninth place, while Kovalainen will start in eighth after the pair initially qualified fourth and third respectively.
The pair were asked to report to stewards after an angry Heidfeld, who qualified seventh, complained to race officials at the conclusion of the session.
Hamilton was subsequently found guilty of impeding the BMW Sauber driver by 'travelling at a very slow speed on the racing line', while Kovalainen was also charged with committing the same offence against the German and Renault driver Alonso.

silver_surfer 23rd Mar '08 Sun, 17:35 Raikkonen storms to victory in Malaysia
If Australia was a nightmare for Ferrari, Malaysia was a dream. Kimi Raikkonen toyed initially with polesitting team mate Felipe Massa, took the lead after their first pit stops, and sauntered into the distance to a victory that puts him back into contention for a second world title.
Massa blotted his copybook by spinning out of an easy second place on the 31st lap, leaving Robert Kubica to take an excellent runner-up result for BMW Sauber. In the closing laps, though 22 seconds adrift, the Pole set a similar pace to Raikkonen.
Heikki Kovalainen was McLaren’s leading runner in a distant third place, a similar distance in arrears.
For Lewis Hamilton, it was a race spent playing catch-up. He made a great start to jump from ninth up to fifth place behind the Ferraris, Kubica and similarly fast-starting Mark Webber in the Red Bull. But then a problem with the right-front wheel during his first pit stop dropped him down to 11th place, and he lost time hand over fist in the traffic.
That enabled Jarno Trulli to come through to a good fourth place for Toyota, with Hamilton dogging his wheel tracks after a great recovery drive. The truth, however, was that this time out Ferrari were stronger, and the pace of BMW Sauber will have both top teams keeping a close eye on the white and blue cars.
Nick Heidfeld set fastest lap in the closing stages as he thirsted after Hamilton, while Webber was able to hold off a challenging Fernando Alonso in the Renault as they wrapped up the final points.
David Coulthard had a relatively quiet race to ninth in the second Red Bull ahead of fellow Briton, Jenson Button, who survived a late off-track moment in his Honda to lead home Renault’s Nelson Piquet, the Brazilian rookie recording his first Grand Prix finish.
Giancarlo Fisichella was 12th for Force India, a lap down, taking the place after Honda’s Rubens Barrichello had to serve a drive-through penalty for pit lane speeding.
The final finishers were Nico Rosberg, who had a most unhappy time in his Williams, the Super Aguris of Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato, and Kazuki Nakajima who, like Rosberg, could not generate decent tyre temperatures in his Williams FW30.
Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais was the first retirement, falling off on the opening lap. Rosberg clobbered Timo Glock then, too, necessitating a pit stop for a new nose cone. The Williams continued, the Toyota was through for the day. Adrian Sutil suffered a mechanical problem that stopped his Force India out on the track, while Sebastian Vettel suffered either engine or transmission failure that brought him to a smoky halt.
The result leaves Hamilton still leading the world championship for drivers with 14 points, ahead of Raikkonen and Heidfeld on 11 apiece. In the constructors’ chase, McLaren lead with 24, ahead of BMW Sauber on 19 and Ferrari on 11.

silver_surfer 6th Apr '08 Sun, 16:21 Kubica storms to BMW’s first Pole!
Bahrain GP - Qualifying
For the first time in its short time in the sport, a BMW Sauber will lead the field around to start a Grand Prix from the pole position. Robert Kubica saved his best for his final lap of qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix, stopping the clocks with a best time of 1:33.096s, three hundredths of a second clear of Felipe Massa in the Ferrari.
Massa dominated practice ahead of qualifying and was again the man to beat today in qualifying. That was until his very final run where he proved blisteringly fast once again, but lost time mid-lap, taking the chequered flag just 0.027s shy of Kubica’s best. The Brazilian will be disappointed to miss out on the pole position, but knows he has the pace to challenge Kubica from the outset of the 57-lap Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton rebounded from yesterday’s shunt, putting in a solid lap in his McLaren Mercedes to qualify third, less than two-tenths off Massa and ahead of Kimi Raikkonen who is having a low-key weekend so far in the second F2008.

silver_surfer 26th Apr '08 Sat, 23:52 Pole for Raikkonen as Alonso shines
Spanish GP - Qualifying
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/1340/banderamq6.gif
Kimi Raikkonen snatched pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix away from local hero Fernando Alonso right at the very end of qualifying this afternoon at Circuit de Catalunya. As ever, the sharp end of the grid came down to a final run on the softer option tyre with the provisional pole position moving from one driver to another until Raikkonen flashed across the line in his Ferrari.
Raikkonen starts the 66-lap Spanish Grand Prix from the pole but all eyes tomorrow afternoon in Spain will be on Fernando Alonso who did a fantastic job to qualify his Renault on the front row of the grid alongside the championship leader. The much-modified R28 has looked fast all weekend long, but fuel levels aside, it is doubtful that even Renault expected a front row start.
Felipe Massa, last year’s winner, set the pace in the second round of qualifying but come the final shootout session had to be content with third position ahead of Robert Kubica who continues to out-shine BMW Sauber team-mate Nick Heidfeld this weekend.
Over at McLaren Mercedes, the team’s difficult weekend continued with Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen qualifying fifth and sixth respectively but with just three tenths in it for Hamilton, race day could still bring possibilities.
Mark Webber starts a solid seventh in his Red Bull Renault while team-mate David Coulthard gambled that he could use just the harder Bridgestone Potenza at the start of qualifying and found himself eliminated early on. Coulthard therefore starts a disappointed 17th in the second RB4.
Jarno Trulli continues to lead the way at Toyota as he lines up eighth, six positions ahead of Timo Glock in the second TF108. Nick Heidfeld and Nelson Piquet round out the top ten for BMW Sauber and Renault.
Rubens Barrichello was unable to make the top ten in his Honda, but got mighty close. The Brazilian veteran lines up 11th ahead of Kazuki Nakajima who had by far his most competitive qualifying showing so far with Williams Toyota. Jenson Button starts 13th in the second Honda ahead of Glock and Nico Rosberg who did not shine in the second FW30.
Sebastien Bourdais is proving that he is worthy of a seat in Formula One as he continues to improve in the Toro Rosso Ferrari. The Champ Car star made it with ease into the second round of qualifying but a small error on his final run left him in 16th position. Team-mate Sebastian Vettel, highly rated by many, is having a tough run at the moment and starts 18th behind Coulthard.
Force India will have to wait a few more weeks before they can try and make it into the second round of qualifying – their long-stated aim with the VJM01. Giancarlo Fisichella starts 19th ahead of team-mate Adrian Sutil. At the back, Anthony Davidson got the better of Super Aguri team-mate Takuma Sato and was less than a tenth shy of Sutil after a good run.

Felipe Massa secured Ferrari's third Monaco pole position in 20 years as he beat team-mate Kimi Raikkonen to the coveted grid slot.
Although many had predicted that McLaren would dominate today's qualifying session, it was instead Ferrari who proved to be the team to beat.
Massa nipped in at the last possible moment with a 1:15.787 to take pole away from Raikkonen by 0.028s. Meanwhile Lewis Hamilton had to settle for third place, only 0.052s off the pace.
And with rain expected tomorrow the top three places on the grid could prove to be the podium result as well.

silver_surfer 27th May '08 Tue, 18:48 A poor race for me admits Raikkonen
Monaco GP - Ferrari - Race
Kimi Raikkonen's failure to score in the rain-hit Monaco Grand Prix has seen Lewis Hamilton take the championship lead by three points from the Finn. Starting second Raikkonen made two big mistakes on his way to ninth position.
Felipe Massa also made an error which would cost him second position. He finished third behind Hamilton and Kubica.
Ferrari retain the lead in the constructors' championship on 69 points with Raikkonen and Massa second and third in the drivers' standings.
Felipe Massa
“A shame to have ended up third because of a series of events that did not go in our favour, which can easily happen in these conditions and on this track. At the start, I was very quick and the car was perfect, but then I made a mistake at the first corner, braking on the yellow line and I lost a place to Robert. But after just a few laps I was right behind him and I knew I could push harder. We decided to switch strategies thinking the rain was going to return, but this turned out to be the wrong choice. On full tanks and on a drying track, the standard rain tyres did not have the same grip as the ones my nearest rivals were using. On top of that, there was a radio blackout between the car and the pits for part of the race.
Given everything that happened, these six points are still important in light of the championship: we have only got through the first third of the season and there is still a long way to go.”
Kimi Raikkonen
“A very poor race for me, right from the off. There was a problem with a wheel before the start and we broke the rules, which meant I was given a drive-through penalty. During the race, my main problem was trying to get the tyres to work as well as possible. Then we decided to change the strategy as we expected it to rain again, but it didn’t happen. Twice I had to change the nose after breaking the front wing. So, as you can see, a long run of things going wrong which explains the 0 points. I am sorry for Sutil, who I hit with just a few laps to go. I lost control of the car under braking coming out of the tunnel and I could do nothing to avoid him. It’s a shame how things went today, as we had the potential to do well. It’s true that I’ve lost the championship lead, but I always said the championship would be a very long one. Now we must prepare as well as possible for Canada where we will try to make up for this disappointment.”
Luca Baldisserri
“We are very disappointed with this result which is definitely below our level of expectation. We made mistakes which we have to look at to ensure we don’t do the same again and we also made a few strategy choices, which all things considered turned out to be wrong even if it easy to be wise after the event. We must draw the right conclusions from this weekend, without colouring our judgement with emotion. We showed we were competitive on a track that traditionally has not suited us, but we did not work at our usual high standard. In less than a fortnight we will face a similar challenge in Montreal, where in 2007, we had problems. We really want to make up for today’s disappointment.”
Stefano Domenicali
“Yesterday, after a great qualifying, it was easy for us to act like prophets foreseeing a possible lottery for today’s race, given the weather forecast. We cannot deny we are disappointed with this definitely negative outcome, the result of a combination of errors on our part and bad luck. We got off on the wrong foot, with an infringement of the rules in preparing Kimi’s car on the grid, minutes before the start, which resulted in a drive through penalty for the driver. Then we decided to switch our strategy, going for a one-stop race, on the basis that we expected the rain to return and this did not happen."
"With hindsight is it easy to say we should have made different choices, but the reality is that, at every level, we did not meet our usual high standards. After this long preamble, the overall picture at the end of the first third of the season is still a positive one. We have taken four wins and the same number of poles from six races and we are still solidly in the lead of the Constructors’ classification, with Kimi and Felipe still in the hunt for the lead in the Drivers.’ Now we must look ahead and get as well prepared as possible for the Canadian Grand Prix. Here we showed we were capable of fighting for the lead and we want to do the same in Montreal, another track that did not suit us so well last year.”

kimi 9th Jun '08 Mon, 07:55 Maiden Win for Kubica, BMW in Canada
http://i29.tinypic.com/k9xj07.jpg
Robert Kubica’s consistent 2008 performances paid off in a big way in the Canadian Grand Prix, with the Pole taking his and BMW Sauber’s maiden Formula 1 victory in a historical day for the Swiss-German team, which also posted its first-ever 1-2 finish as Nick Heidfeld took the second spot.
Red Bull’s David Coulthard finished third, securing his first podium since Monaco ’06, while Toyota’s Timo Glock grabbed a career-best fourth, ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and Jarno Trulli in the second Toyota. Honda’s Rubens Barrichello scored for the second consecutive race in seventh, ditto for Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel in the eighth spot.
The race was marked by a near-comical mistake by polesitter Lewis Hamilton, who ran into the back of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen on the 20th lap when the Finn stopped at the end of the pit lane behind Kubica due to a red light. Both men retired on the spot.

Carnage in the pit lane as Hamilton and Raikkonen come together
"I saw the two guys in front battling in the pitlane and all of a sudden they stopped," Hamilton explained. "I saw the red light but by the time I stopped it was too late. I apologize to Kimi if I cost him the race, but these sorts of things happen."
Before the mistake, Hamilton had been the dominant force of the race. He kept his lead at the start and began to pull away from Kubica, who had started second, with relative ease.

Raikkonen and Hamilton walk away from the scene of their accident
http://i31.tinypic.com/2hz1ude.jpg
A dejected Hamilton walks through the pits after hitting Raikkonen
Things started to change on lap 17, when the safety car was deployed followed by the retirement of Adrian Sutil, who parked his Force India in a delicate spot on Turn 3. The leaders all headed for refueling pit stops, and the safety car meant that Hamilton’s seven-second lead was nullified by the time all cars reached the pits. Kubica was able to emerge ahead and Raikkonen jumped to second, only to be run over by Hamilton at the red light. Williams’ Nico Rosberg also touched Hamilton but was able to continue.
The order shuffled dramatically as several cars on one-stop strategies didn’t stop. Heidfeld jumped to first, ahead of Barrichello, Williams’ Kazuki Nakajima, the Red Bull of Coulthard and Mark Webber and the two Toyotas. Ferrari’s Felipe Massa dropped down the order as a refueling rig problem forced him to stop twice.
Down in 10th place, Kubica was the de facto leader among the two-stoppers, and began to gain positions as the cars ahead of him made their stops. Leader Heidfeld came in on lap 27 and had been able to clear enough of an advantage to emerge ahead of Kubica. The Pole’s lighter car, however, enabled him to overtake his teammate one lap later.
It wasn’t until Timo Glock’s sole stop on lap 42, though, that Kubica finally rose to the lead. From then on it was the Pole’s race to lose, with Heidfeld in second shielding him from the eager Renault of Fernando Alonso – the Spaniard yet to pit for a second time.
But Alonso’s threat came to a halt on lap 45, the double world champion spinning while chasing Heidfeld and complaining about the gearbox over the radio immediately after the incident.
Kubica pulled away from Heidfeld and emerged from his second and final stop on lap 49 still ahead. By running the longest of all first stints, one-stopped Coulthard was able to rise to the third spot by then.
Barrichello ran fourth but let what would have been his best finish since 2006 slip when he had a brief off-road excursion on lap 58, both Toyotas flying past him. The recovering Massa passed his compatriot shortly after. Earlier, on lap 50, the Ferrari driver was responsible for one of the best moments of the race, when he overtook Heikki Kovalainen’s McLaren and Barrichello himself simultaneously on the Turn 10 hairpin – a move negated by his need for a third and final stop shortly after. Kovalainen for his part was also on the recovery trail, having dropped to 14th in the first round of stops, as he had to wait for Hamilton’s stop to end when both cars came in under the safety car period.
Massa earned another position near the end, when a mistake by Glock on Turn 2 forced Trulli to brake hard to avoid hitting his teammate, allowing the Ferrari past.
The aftermath of the chaotic Canadian GP sees Kubica now as a surprising first in the championship with 42 points, ahead of Hamilton and Massa tied at 38. Raikkonen is fourth with 35.
On the podium, the Polish national anthem was heard for the first time in F1 history.
"It is fantastic to win for BMW Sauber," Kubica said. "We grew up together and thanks to the team providing a good car we managed to do first and second. Maybe our pace is still not best as I couldn't match Lewis's pace. it is fantastic for me, the team, my country and my fans.
"Winning in Canada where I had big shunt last season and [achieving] the goal to win a grand prix this season... We have done it and I'm leading the championship, so I hope the team will give me 100 percent support to defend it until last race."
http://i29.tinypic.com/rrtbnn.jpg
Kubica takes BMW's first win as a constructor
Heidfeld, who remains winless in his long F1 career, was happy with second place: “I'm very happy. It was a good race for me and a good result in the situation I am in at the moment. I have been with team since the beginning, with BMW and Williams with Sauber. It's great to have a victory with Robert and a one-two. It shows we are still going in the right direction.”
The 2008 F1 season resumes in two weeks’ time with the French GP at Magny-Cours.
