Warp Records WARP CD 156 2007

INFO:

Battles is a quartet formed by ex-Don Caballero and Storm & Stress member Ian Williams, ex-Helmet and Tomahawk drummer John Stanier, ex-Lynx guitarist Dave Konopa and solo musician Tyondai Braxton (son of Anthony Braxton). All the members bring influences from their previous bands in to Battles' music as well as new sounds not previously heard in their previous bands. Battles released their first EPs in 2004 and where made into a compilation in 2006 by Warp Records. By this time Battles had a strong cult following and it grew larger when the year 2007 came in. In early 2007 Battles released their single "Atlas" which received positive remarks from press and fans alike. "Atlas" was also voted single of the week on NWE magazine. In May of 2007 Battles released their first full-length album "Mirrored" which reached #70 in the UK charts. The band are having their strongest following ever since their conception touring around the world and receiving positive reviews from many respectable magazines and websites.

Battles' music is hard to describe. Even though they're often labeled as a Math Rock band Battles combines many different styles into their sound to make their Math Rock more unique and accessible for a wider audience. Progressive Rock fans looking for innovation or a new sound will definitely enjoy Battles' music.

Magna Carta records #MA-9024
This five-piece outfit from California delivers technically demanding, high-velocity prog metal. References include DREAM THEATER, ENCHANT, FATES WARNING and SHADOW GALLERY as well as the more classic rockers such as RUSH and DEEP PURPLE. The band consists of Matthew Bradley on vocals, Patrick Reyes on guitar and brother Steve Reyes on bass, Jeremy Colson on drums, and former ZERO HOUR keyboard player Matt Guillory.

Their cd "Manifesto for Futurism" ('99) is an immaculately constructed ten-piece set that features strong musicianship (you'll notice some elegantly gothic, neo-classical tinges in their guitar lines). Some may bash the band for being another DREAM THEATER clone but they do stand on their own, both from a compositional and lyrical standpoint. Perhaps one aspect they could improve on is in the melodic department; a little more feeling in their play would be welcomed as well. Technically speaking, they are flawless.

Recommended for fans of DREAM THEATER circa "Images and Word" and "Awake".

Devon Grave's lyrics always capture something poetic in nature. "If it's true that crows are carrying the souls of dead people into the beyond," states Devon, "then what happens with the souls of those people with whom the crows didn't manage to get there?" An interesting question and his inspiration for DEAD SOUL TRIBE's latest album's title “A Murder Of Crows”. Graves is the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music is both philosophical and challenging. "Everything I write has a message, an approach to poetry," he says. "It's the major function of poetry not to provide answers, but to raise questions - to be thought provoking and to create space for individual interpretations."

This is exactly what DEAD SOUL TRIBE succeeds in doing with their second album, “A Murder Of Crows”. Just as thoughts flow through the endless convolutions of the brain of their creator, the songs of the album build up an atmospheric tension, holding the listener with it's compositional fluidity that lets them swim in a sea of intriguing melodies.

Modern progressive metal must sound that way, but at the same time offer a fresh and sometimes amazing approach. Modern progressive metal must sound that way, but at the same time offer a fresh and sometimes amazing approach. Just imagine TOOL with a vague point of orientation, connected with the compositional strength of PSYCHOTIC WALTZ, (Graves' previous band which he's still known under the pen name Buddy Lackey).

With his name change, Graves also made a musical and personal change when he formed DEAD SOUL TRIBE. The debut album of the same name (2001) was a convincing statement of his grand creativity and more than just a glimpse of his actual feelings at the time. "I still like this record very much," say Graves. "I think, it has its own character style which is unique." However, the new “A Murder Of Crows” shows an obvious evolution of the DST sound. "The new songs are far more aggressive. At the same time they are sounding more progressive without losing the groove. The guitars are more dominant and the keyboards were held back more. You can find a few acoustic guitars and more flute parts than on the first record."

One can also hear that Graves has made experiences as a sound engineer too. “0A Murder Of Crows” makes a great impression with a powerful sound, exposing the dynamics of all the instruments and creating a lasting result. "Since the first album, I have learned a lot as a producer," Graves admits. "The entire album has a better sound, especially the drums."

”A Murder of Crows” also debuts new rhythm guitarist Rolls Kerschbaumer who replaced Volker Wischko before the recording of the new album. Drummer Adel Moustafa and bassist, Roland Ivenz have been there since the beginning and both have made a large contribution to this new release.

"I permanently write songs, to be precise, I already have tracks for a third album. For instance, the songs 'Black Smoke and Mirrors' and 'Time' I wrote at a time when I still was with PSYCHOTIC WALTZ. 'Angels Of Vertigo' was based on a guitar riff, which I had written for my solo album “The Strange Mind Of Buddy Lackey”. A few fans probably will recognize it, but it's slower and a million times more bombastic than the original. Vocals and lyrics are even completely new. On the album there are songs which are linked by a thematic thread. Most of the songs can independently be listened to, but there is a thematic thread between 'Feed,' 'In A Garden Made Of Stones' and several other pieces, where I portray the individual life in the cities: 'A skeleton made of houses, something out of the nothingness will be born. Asleep for a thousand years, taking form. Stone by stone, stone by stone."

INFO:
Jem Godfrey began in music as a songwriter for many pop and mainstream groups. In fact, he’s written four number one singles in the UK for groups such as ATOMIC KITTEN and SHANE WARD. In 2004, he began the group FROST and ventured into the realm of progressive rock. For his debut album, called “Milliontown”, Jem enlisted guitarist John Mitchell (ARENA, KINO), bassist John Jowitt (IQ, JADIS), and drummer Andy Edwards (IQ). The album itself is a mixture of neo progressive rock, progressive metal undertones, some symphonic leanings, and some more mainstream ideals. “Milliontown” is to be released on July 18th in the USA and July 24th in the UK. FROST is a band to look out for in the future and they seem to have a long, fruitful future ahead of them.

INFO:

GREEN CARNATION was formed in 1992 by Norwegian Black Metal Master Terje Vik Schei (a.k.a Tchort), with the mere intention to make Gothic/Doom Metal. On 1994 they changed their name to IN THE WOODS, and then Tchort gave the project the form he wanted to give it. On 1998 they returned to the name of GREEN CARNATION, and they included strong Progressive elements to the music.

After the Release of "Journey to the End of the Night", Tchort had the pleasure to create every musician's golden dream: A one-piece album with all music and lyrics written by him. He counted with great musicians aside him, like drummer Anders Kobro (CARPATHIAN FOREST). 2001 was the release year for "Light Of Day, Day of Darkness", the ultimate Progressive metal album, dark and romantic, classical and seductive, A must!

Fans of Dark Progressive Metal, you'll find what you need here. If you haven't listened, you just don't know what you're missing.

INFO:
The music is sometimes hard with great guitar solos in a stunning production and seems to be influenced by DREAM THEATER. Other tracks are much softer with intresting keyboard lines and orchestral movements. After releasing a first so called 'demo' album, their next CD "Carved in Stone" was much more mature thanks also to the contributions of Gary Wehrkamp. Their two latest albums prove that this group of excellent musicians is one of the major progressive metal bands of the moment!

Vertical Alignment - Signposts (2006 - progressive rock)

http://a558.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/72/l_75de22ae700a3342f7d1c500300be525.jpg

Genre: Progressive Rock
Year: 2006
Bitrate: 192Kbps VBR

Peter Jorgensen's dreamy progressive hard rock band has released their long awaited full length album, Signposts. Besides Pete on guitar and keyboards and his wife Terri on bass, Signposts features Randy George and Wil Henderson of Ajalon, Steve Babb, Fred Schendel, and Eric Parker of Glass Hammer, David Wallimann of Glass Hammer and Young Earth, Carl Groves of Salem Hill, Mike and Shaun FitzPatrick of the band FitzPatrick, Eddie Jerlin of Everlasting Arms, and Kevin Jarvis of Farpoint.

The album starts off with the title track, an acoustic ballad that features Keven Jarvis of Farpoint on mandolin and Jim Branreuther on lead vocals. The vocal melody on this song sounds a tad cheesy to my ears, and it doesn?t really do the album justice as an introduction, although the lyrics set the stage for the semi-concept album theme. The best is definitely yet to come. Dress Rehearsal kicks in with a bang of bright synthesizers and some heavier electric guitar. Branreuther sounds much better on this war-themed power-prog tune, which features some extended keyboard and guitar soloing by Jorgensen. ELP-style keyboards mix with an early 70's rock vibe. Next is one of my favorites from the disc, Ballad of the Titanic, sung by Eric Parker, also of CPR fame. His fine crystalline voice fits this ode to pride and the fall perfectly. Guitarist Dave Walliman and keyboardist Fred Schendel also add their considerable talents to the epic tale. This is high prog rock at its best. Freedom?s Call follows, again featuring Schendel, but sung by the Fitzpatrick brothers (who?s expressive voices sound a lot like Shane Lankford of Orphan Project). Anchored by a driving bass line by Pete?s wife Terri, Freedom?s Call builds over 16 minutes, with the lyrics drawing parallels between Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt, Christ?s sacrifice, and the freedom of African American slaves. Fred Schendel really shines during the extended instrumental breaks. Children of the Son, which features Wil Henderson and Randy George of Ajalon, expounds upon the terrible plight of orphan children in Romania over a bed of Yes-like symphonic rock. The Towers is based on the 2001 terrorist attacks, and the song features Edward Jerlin on keyboards. Eddie formerly worked at the World Trade Center, but was off work on jury duty the day the planes struck. Having him as a guest on the song adds immensely to the emotion and poignancy of the tale. Jessica Cole adds expressive lead vocals. Rented Houses features Carl Groves of Salem Hill, one of my all time favorite vocalists. The song uses the analogy of our bodies being but temporary habitations, using world events as examples, or sign posts if you will, of the times we are living in. Mixing different media snippets with keyboard-driven prog rock, this is a progressive tour-de-force. What's a prog album without a fantasy theme? Next we delve into the world of Stephen Lawhead?s books, with the lyrics to Kingdom of Summer taken right out of his novel Taliesin. Mike Fitzpatrick is back on lead vocals on this keyboard driven, change of pace song. As a fan of Lawheads books, I think Vertical Alignment has put together a fine interpretation of the spirit of the book. Rented Houses Epilogue completes the disc, with Carl Groves again lending his distinct voice to a summation of the world events that are the signposts that lead us upward to a Vertical Alignment, complete with a short revise of the opening track to bookend the disc. With over 70 minutes of hot-off-the-press original spiritual progressive rock expertly mastered by Gene Crout, Signposts is a must have for prog rock fans.
