Back in 1964 when I was a little boy, my mother sent me to queue for RCA rice. The President then if I'm not mistaken was Diosdado Macapagal.Isn't it ironical that 44 years later and with her daughter GMA as president, we again have to fall in line for our staple food. What's wrong with the Philippines?

Our soils are fertile, water sources are in abundance, the climate is well suited for agriculture and the International Rice Research Institute is right in our own backyard should we need technical assistance. How then did it happen that we have to import rice just to fill our needs?

Who do you think is to blame and what can be done to correct the situation?

blaming others, wouldn't help...

let us all together face this crisis and help each other and then after we manage to survive lets trace whose fault and take necessary actions on them.

WALA NMAN TALAGANG SHORTAGE..

Sabi nila kasi because of the geographical setting of the Philippines kaya di gaanong makapag parami ng bigas...and yung mga irrigation sites ginawang mga subdivision..dun nga nagreact si Sec Yap di ba....sabi niya kailangan ng taniman is "tubig tubig tubig!"

There's alot of disinformation or news spin from both sides of the political spectrum and it's very difficult to tell who's telling the truth. It's up to you to discern but what I can say is I'll believe what I see and experience and therefore I believe that there is shortage. Look at the lines in the NFA retailer shops.
As for the inability of our country to produce sufficient rice I dont' believe in the argument that we can't produce enough for our needs. The fertilizer scam, the diversion of funds for irrigation projects and other irregularities in the government has definitely hampered our rice production capacity. There was a time during the Marcos era when palay were rotting in NGA warehouses because of bumper harvests. This is a proof that we can if we believe we can.

I think the price of rice is just right dahil hindi ganun kadali ang ginagawa ng farmers. Mahal na rin ang fertilizer. Mahal rin ang milling fee. Ang problem kasi yung mga negosyante nagsasamantala. Yung bigas ng taong bayan(NFA rice) ginagawa nilang negosyo.

It is very true that the good climate and the geographical location in producing rice in the country. In the latest report of rice production in the Philippines, rice production in the Philippines has increased in a higher minimal amount in the past 5 years. Sources revealed that we have abundant supply of rice in our country. But here's the pick, as rice production increases there is also a huge increase of population in our country. As estimated today, our country has 90 million in population. Another factor is the increasing percentage of import quota of rice in other countries.

So that is the reason why the government say that the Philippines is experiencing rice shortage.

Hey, you know what..hinahamon pala ng mga rice millers (for commercial rice) ang gob. na bilhin ang kanilang bigas amounting to 1,600 pesos..na katumbas lang naman ng binabayaran ng ating pamahalaan to import rice...bakit ayaw bilhin na lang ng gob ito samantalang ang may shortage lang naman ay ang NFA rice (based on the Editorial of Bulgar newspaper today, April 28). Sabi nga doon, dahil mas malaki ang kickback pag nag import samantalang kung bibili sila from commercial retailers eh walang kita! wahahaha

i dont think ngkukulang tayo sa bigas...way lng to ng government pra ilihis ung usapan ng ZTE scam..pano tayo kukulangin sa bigas kung ang phil. soil ay fertile sa pg produce nito?..db...sna nman isipin ng nsa pwesto ang mga maliliit nting mga kababayan...

The real picture is clearer now. There is really a rice shortage not only in the Philippines but globally. What some of our members experienced in terms of sufficient supply is normal in the rice producing regions of the Philippines.
The picture of shortage is compounded in Metro Manila by poor people lining up for cheap NFA rice.
The situation has somewhat eased now but it is not a reason for the government to be complacent. Long term solutions should be implemented to prevent the recurrence of the same problem.
