like this yar, unang pipili ay welcoat. so mamimili sila sa mga players who just turned professional to join their team. shempre pipiliin nila yung pinaka magaling, at pinaka fit sa team nila... and the other teams do the same... si Intal.. well baka mga 4th or 5th.. or even lower pa sha piliin kasi may ibang mas magaling sa kanya/hindi sha kelangan nung team..

Artadi finally gets his wish

Purefoods jitterbug Paul Artadi demanded to be traded in the offseason and now gets his wish. He’s officially Brgy Ginebra’s property after the TJ Giants dealt him to their sister team. As sister teams cannot transact directly with each other, a third team (in pba lingo a conduit) is required to make the deal push through. Air21 Express is reportedly the third team and as part of the deal, ships a 2008 second round pick to Purefoods, and in return, receives Jec Chia and Paolo Hubalde from Brgy Ginebra.

Artadi demanded a trade from Purefoods management as he was being used sparingly by the coaching staff. How he fits into the Brgy. Ginebra system with already three point guards in its line up (Jayjay Helterbrand, Johnny Abarrientos, and Macky Escalona) remains to be seen. If his playing time dwindled with the Giants that only had Roger Yap, Boyet Bautista and at times Noy Castillo and PJ Simon rotating at the point, what more with Gin Kings who arguably have the better and more solid backcourt rotation anywhere in the league. Artadi gives the Gin Kings another “energy” boost off the bench, similar to what former UE teammate Ronald Tubid brings to the table. His non-existent offensive production may not even be needed by the team since they already firebrands like Helterbrand and Mark Caguioa who can handle the offensive load.

Meanwhile, the transfer of Artadi opens up another spot at point guard for Purefoods. The Giants are reportedly eyeing Red Bull’s Brandon Cablay to bolster their backcourt corps. Cablay is a combo guard whose playing career has been hobbled with injuries lately. He was part of the deal that sent Larry Fonacier to San Miguel a couple of months ago. The holdup to the deal according to sources, is Red Bull’s insistence that a first round pick be included in the deal while the Giants are only willing to give up two second round picks. It’s highly unthinkable that Purefoods gives up that future first round pick to Red Bull. The team didn’t give that up when Air21 dangled Mark Telan to them days before the draft. Telan eventually was traded to Coca-Cola.

This will mark the first time Artadi and 2005-06 James Yap will be separated from each other. Both Artadi and Yap were teammates since their glory days at UE. When both players applied for the draft in 2004, they were both taken by Purefoods second and eleventh overall. How will Yap respond without his favorite playing partner on the floor? Can Artadi realize his potential at Ginebra?

These questions will be answered when the PBA opens shop in October.

Ginebra has landed a dervish-like spitfire while Air21 has moved closer to forging a concrete deal with the "Living Legend."

With Ginebra's dreaded backcourt duo of Mark Caguioa and Jay-Jay Helterbrand still in the injury list, the Kings yesterday acquired speedy Paul Artadi from Purefoods in a three-way trade that involved Air21 as the third party.

Artadi will be the fourth playmaker on the squad after Helterbrand, former Most Valuable Player Johnny Abarrientos and rookie Macky Escalona.

A very reliable source said that in return Purefoods got Ginebra's future second round pick. Another source said Air21 will get Paolo Hubalde, son of former Crispa Redmanizer legend Freddie Hubalde.

A highly-placed source told Malaya the deal has yet to be formalized, but is "good as done." Top officials of the teams involved could not be reached for comment as of press time.

With Artadi gone, Purefoods' playmaking chores will be split among Roger Yap, rookie Chito Llanete and Noy Castillo, who can also play the 2-guard slot.

In getting Hubalde, indications now point to the Express getting very close to forging a deal with Robert Jaworski to become their coach. Hubalde played with and for Jaworski while they were with Ginebra during the early 90s.

Air21 chairman Bert Lina and president Lito Alvarez, also the Express team manager, were reportedly in a closed-door meeting for the most part of yesterday to discuss the details of Jaworski's contract.

It was not immediately known how Hubalde can be inserted into the Air21 lineup since the team's focus is centered on the search for another inside presence to complement rookie Doug Kramer and Ranidel de Ocampo.

"We direly need another big man," Air21 coach Bo Perasol said, pointing to the likes of Purefoods' Richard Yee and Coca-Cola's Ervin Sotto.

At the moment, the Express remain rookie-heavy with Kramer, JC Intal, Marvin Cruz, RJ Masbang, Frank Barcellano and Cris Baluyot in the roster. Jeck Chia has also been taken in.

Artadi and Ginebra, meanwhile, got their respective wishes.

It was reportedly Artadi himself who asked Purefoods management to release him. His transfer severs his ties with James Yap, but reunites him with another former University of the East teammate, Ronald Tubid.

In an earlier interview, Ginebra coach Jong Uichico had expressed his interest in Artadi.

"We're hoping to get him" said Uichico. "He has speed and he can possibly bring in additional excitement."

Artadi's inclusion gives the defending Philippine Cup champion additional boost since Fil-Am Rafi Reavis is already in the country and is set to practice with the country's most popular ballclub. Reavis was sidelined by a shoulder injury since last March and was forced to go to the United States for surgery and rehabilitation.

"He's about 90 percent ready now, but he has yet to join our practice. Only our doctor can tell when he can join the team's practice," said Uichico.
