CONNECTIVITY Unlimited Resource Enterprise’s (Cure) mobile phone brand ümobile has been renamed Red Mobile as the ad-funded mobile phone service provider nears completion of its network integration program with parent firm, Smart Communications Inc.

After more than two months since it announced the temporary halt in processing new applications, representatives from ümobile said the company will soon be able to service existing subscribers after the so-called transition period which runs from November 16 to 21, 2008.

During this transition period, ümobile said there will be service interruption although the company assured that normal service will resume by November 22.

“ümobile services will be affected or will not be available during [the transition] time,” said a ümobile representative who called up subscribers.

The ümobile representative also said a new SIM (subscriber identification module) card branded as Red Mobile will be delivered to replace existing ümobile SIM cards. The new card carries P200 worth of free load credits.

“The P100 free load credits from the ümobile SIM card can still be used even if we have replace your old SIM to a Red Mobile SIM card,” added the ümobile representative.

Cure officials could not be reached for comment but Smart chief wireless adviser Orlando Vea confirmed that the network integration will be concluded soon and that the company will soon be servicing subscribers.

“In line with the integration [with Smart], there are new service offerings as well but I can’t disclose what these are yet. We want those who are subscribing to Cure to experience the best service possible as what we in Smart provides to our existing subscribers,” he said.

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) president Napoleon Nazareno said the network integration program will be finished within the fourth quarter. “I believe it is being finalized so that we can resume service in time for the holiday season,” he said. PLDT is Smart’s parent company.

In July, Cure processed 6,000 to 8,000 applications since the service was commercially launched in June of this year. On August 29, Cure informed its preenlisted subscribers that it will not be able to accept applications starting on September 1, 2008, until further notice.

As a result, Cure’s target of 10,000 new subscribers every month was not achieved. “We did not meet our target given the circumstances. But I must say that the migration and integration of Cure’s systems and equipment to the Smart facilities is not affecting the service we are giving to our existing subscribers. They still continue to subscribe to our services,” Cure chief marketing officer Ardie Balderrama had said.

The newest player in the cellular market is competing with other mobile phone firms by giving out free load credits to subscribers who receive advertisements via their 2G (second-generation) or 3G (third-generation) enabled handsets.

Subscribers are by-invitation only. Those accepted into the service from June to August got P100 worth of prepaid load every month for six months. On top of that, every ad message they view on their handsets earns rewards in the form of free load, text messages, data minutes, etc.

Cure is partnering with corporations that wish to advertise or create mobile-based campaigns for a particular brand. A portion of the revenues generated from a brand’s mobile marketing campaigns will be given back to the subscribers who then can purchase or make transactions for ümobile services or avail of a brand’s product offer such as freebies, discounts and other rewards.
