The Satanic Verses - Salman Rushdie

"The book that is worth killing people and burning flags for is not the book that I wrote." Salman Rushdie, Time Magazine , shortly after the publication of The Satanic Verses in 1988.

Banned in most Muslim countries as also in India, the book was called a work of blasphemy by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeina who issued a fatwa against Rushdie for "insulting Islam, the prophet Muhammed and the holy Koran."

As Rushdie saw it, his book "isn't actually about Islam but about migration, metamorphosis, divided selves, love, death, London and Bombay," he told Time.

The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown

The Bluest Eye - Toni Morrison

Eleven-year-old black girl Pecola Breedlove prays for blue eyes, "each night without fail" believing her ugly reality will be made beautiful through them. She years to be beautiful so that people will look at her. Instead she is spat upon, ridiculed, and ultimately raped and impregnated by her own father. This novel by the Pulitzer prize-winning author was pulled from a high school in Alaska in 1994 and cited for being too "controversial." The novel was both challenged and banned in Pennsylvania in 1994, and faced challenges in both Florida and Massachusetts due to the book's sexual content.

Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert

In 1856, after publishing Madame Bovary, Flaubert and the editors of the Revue de Paris were put on trial because Madame Bovary was considered to be morally offensive. Madame Bovary is the story of Emma Bovary, an unhappily married woman who seeks escape through forbidden relationships with other men. Ultimately, Madame Bovary's indiscretions and her obsession with Romance lead to her downfall.

Lady Chatterley's Lover - D H Lawrence

The publication of the book caused a scandal due to its explicit sex scenes, including previously banned four-letter words, and perhaps particularly because the male lover was working-class. The story concerns a young married woman whose upper-class husband has been paralysed and rendered impotent. Her sexual frustration leads her into an affair with the gamekeeper, Mellors, eventually culminating in their marriage. .

Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger

This novel depicting a teenager's nervous breakdown has been repeatedly banned and challenged for reasons such as "profanity," "sexual references," and the charge that it "undermines morality." As recently as 1983, "the book's contents" were cited as justification to ban the book. The book chronicles Holden Caulfield's journey from innocence to experience and is the quintessential coming-of-age novel--though it's an unusual one, in which the hero tries to cling to the simplicity of childhood, achieving a kind of maturity almost in spite of himself.

Little Red Riding Hood
This could feature in Ripley's Believe it or not! This classic fairy tale, a favourite with children through generations, was banned by two California school districts in 1989. THey found it very disturbing that a little girl should be carrying wine for her grandmother (in one version she is carrying wine and cake for her ailing granny.

What makes somebody smart?

about giving you a strategy for learning. From this strategy, called holistic learning, I’ll provide a set of different tools to put that theory into practice. My hopes is to provide a large assortment of tools that, with the backing of the holistic learning strategy, you can use to tailor your own approach. With practice many of these techniques can become powerful weapons in your learning arsenal. This book has two major goals. First, the holistic learning strategy should give you a model for how to learn better. Without an easily understandable theory of learning, it is difficult to make improvements. Hard to believe anything other than luck and maybe fate, never mind a book, can make someone fall in love with you, but oddly enough, Leil Lowndes seems to offer the advice that can do just that in How to Make Anyone Fall in Love with You. The sensation of falling in love comes from a chemical secreted by the nervous system, phenylethylamine (or PEA, as Lowndes calls it, as in "Scientists tell us only PEA-brained people fall in Love"), and the trick is to trigger the manufacture of PEA in your potential love partner, giving him or her the sensation of being in love. Lowndes offers 85 techniques for "Hunters and Huntresses" to capture their "Quarry." Much of what the book offers is common sense--the power of eye contact and compliments--but it's presented in a new way and with such detail that it seems that it can't help but work.

Following some of her advice will have you treading that fine line between nice and obsequious, and at times, this book may sound offensive to some, advising the reader to play what may sound like games. Lowndes is aware of this, and she offers some caveats, but still it is hard to get past advice such as, "Show him you're smart, but remember--not too smart" or "Watch your Quarry's reactions to outside stimuli, then show the same emotions." In all fairness, Lowndes doesn't play favorites: her advice to men and women can be equally appalling. Yet, the relaxed style of this book, presenting solid wisdom with a bit of scientific support, makes this book appealing, and, who knows, maybe it will make you more appealing, too!

If you're looking for quick answers and a linear narrative, numerous hair raising events, surgical extractions of implants, and analytical discussions on what those little guys are doing invading our homes and bodies, you're going to be disappointed. But if you want a meaningful answer as to what those little guys are doing invading our homes and bodies, you'll get it, as Lt. Colonel Philip Corso would say, if you can take it. Vaeni's style is quirky and engaging, and restlessly jumps from one expositional form to another, making his points in the style he deems best suited for the moment. The "spine" of the book is the use of an ongoing interview -- a device employed by no less than Aristotle in his Dialogues -- between a "Norm De Plume" and himself. Beyond this, the book is a kaleidoscope of prose techniques, including news clippings, poems, and both first and third person narratives. Though not born of blogging and the internet, his style suits the blogosphere well -- quick, punchy, and irreverent. We get to know Vaeni in candid -- even explicit -- detail.

He engages us quickly. We get to know and care about him, and because of this we are willing to follow down the twists and turns of his story. The payoff of the book is long in coming, and this reader found this distracting. Though enjoined in the author's introduction to not read but to experience the book, I began to find the teasing detours and the crazy quilt of the prose a bit tedious. Hitting Chapter 11 and confronted with the title "time out for song, poem, story, and ranting" (page 50) I lost patience with it and jumped to the end of the book and skimmed back to find an unwavering discussion on the subject of aliens pick up at Chapter 53, page 310 out of the book's 381. And yet, I went back to read the rest. What at first blush appear to be long digressions on unrelated matters -- his emotionally torturous love life as a high school student and young adult, coming to (and living through the culture shock) of New York City, a very long narrative about his career at Nickelodeon studios and an intensely frustrating affair -- give us context, helps us understand the paradoxical nature of Vaeni's struggles, and adds to the overall ambience. (I will never be able to think about Nickelodeon as anything other than a corporate political nightmare again.) These same needs could probably have been fulfilled more quickly, and possibly more effectively -- the fiction writer in me would wanted to have seen a more linear narrative, demonstrating the interplay between the personal events of his life and the paranormal ones. One could argue these tangents help exposition the human condition, one of the overall points of the book, but can't help but feel like uncorrelated -- albeit absorbing -- digressions. Despite the book's flaws, it is an engaging book for two reasons Vaeni is an excellent writer. He engages, he plays, he doesn't rest. The vitality of his prose never flags. He has understood the painfully obvious fundamental (and all-too-frequently ignored) rule of writing: a writer's work needs to be interesting. And then there are individuals who have no interest in the technology, but use the computer merely as a tool to aid them in stealing money, goods, or services. Despite the media-created myth of Kevin Mitnick, I am not a malicious hacker. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

STARTING OUT
My path was probably set early in life. I was a happy-go-lucky kid, but bored. After my father split when I was three, my mother worked as a waitress to support us. To see me then - an only child being raised by a mother who put in long, harried days on a sometimes-erratic schedule - would have been to see a youngster on his own almost all his waking hours. I was my own babysitter. Growing up in a San Fernando Valley community gave me the whole of Los Angeles to explore, and by the age of twelve I had discovered a way to travel free throughout the whole greater L.A. Area. I realized one day while riding the bus that the security of the bus transfer I had purchased relied on the unusual pattern of the paper-punch, that the drivers used to mark day; time, and route on the transfer slips. A friendly driver, answering my carefully planted question, told me where to buy that special type of punch. The transfers are meant to let you change buses and continue a journey to your destination, but I worked out how to
use them to travel anywhere I wanted to go for free. Obtaining blank transfers was a walk in the park..............
