Characterizations...Originally posted for the Twilighters Discussion Page by JenG. I had to repost it here. It was done so well and besides...we need a refresher course on our favorite characters!

Edward Cullen (né Edward Anthony Masen) is a fictional character from Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. He features in the books Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, as well as the Twilight film, and the as yet unfinished novel Midnight Sun - a re-telling of the events of Twilight from Edward's perspective. Edward is a vampire who, over the course of the Twilight series, falls in love with, marries, and has a child with Bella Swan, a human teenager who later chooses to become a vampire also. In the 2008 Twilight film, Edward is played by actor Robert Pattinson.

Characterization
Edward is described in the book and by Bella as being charming, polite, determined, and very stubborn. He is very protective over Bella and puts her safety, humanity and welfare before anything else. He often over-analyzes situations and has a tendency to overreact, especially in situations where Bella's safety is at risk. He retains some outdated speech from his human life in the early 20th century, and can be very romantic. Edward sees himself as a monster, and after falling in love with Bella, he desperately wishes that he were human instead of a vampire.

Physical appearance
Like all the vampires in the Twilight series, Edward is described by Bella as being impossibly beautiful. At various points in the series, she compares him to the mythical Greek god Adonis. His skin is "like marble"—very pale, ice cold, and sparkles in the sunlight. She describes his facial features as being perfect and angular—high cheekbones, strong jawline, a straight nose, and full lips. His hair, which is always messy, retains the unusual bronze shade that he inherited in his human life from his biological mother. His eyes, once green, are now described as a gold. His appearance changes if he goes long without feeding: his eyes darken, becoming almost black, and purple bruises appear beneath his eyes. Edward is 6'2", and has a slender but muscular body.

Edward has certain abilities that are his alone. He is the fastest of the Cullens, able to outrun any of them. Perhaps as a result of a talent for empathy in his human life, Edward can also read the mind of anyone within a few miles of himself; Bella is the sole exception to this rule, which Meyer has stated is due to Bella having a very private mind. Edward also retains some of the traditional mindset and dated patterns of speech from his early-20th century human life.

Alice Cullen (born Mary Alice Brandon) is the adopted daughter of Carlisle and Esme, adoptive sister of Edward, Rosalie, and Emmett, and wife of Jasper. Alice is described as being petite and pixie-like at 4 ft 10 in (1.5 m), with a graceful gait and hair that is short, spiky, and black. Her special ability is to see the future, an enhanced version of her ability to have premonitions as a human. However, her ability is limited; she is only able to see the outcome of a decision once it is made. Due to this, decisions made in the spur of the moment can not be foreseen. Alice can see futures involving humans and vampires, though is unable to see the futures of werewolves or half-breeds, such as Renesmee.

In Breaking Dawn, Alice theorizes that she can see vampires very clearly because she is one, can see humans somewhat less clearly because she was one, and cannot see werewolves or half-breeds because she never was one. Alice is portrayed as being bubbly and optimistic, and loves and cares for Bella like a sister. Her hobbies include shopping, make-overs, and throwing parties. Alice's early history is very vague, as she remembers nothing of her human life and woke up alone as a vampire. It is eventually revealed that she was born around 1901 in Biloxi, Mississippi, and was kept in an asylum because she had premonitions. Alice was changed by an old vampire who worked at the asylum in order to protect her from James, a tracker vampire who was hunting her.

After doing some research, Alice found her grave and discovered that the date on her tombstone matched the date of her admission to the asylum. Through her research she additionally discovered that she had a little sister named Cynthia, and that Cynthia's daughter, Alice's niece, was still alive in Biloxi.

Jasper Hale (born Jasper Whitlock) is the adopted son of Carlisle and Esme, adoptive brother of Edward, Emmett, and Rosalie, and husband of Alice. He was born in Texas and joined the Confederate States Army in 1861 to serve in the Civil War. Due to his extremely charismatic personality, he ascended through the ranks quickly. Jasper was turned into a vampire in 1863 by a vampire named Maria when he was 20 years old. As a vampire, he gained the ability to manipulate the emotions of those around him. Recognizing his high rank in the army, Maria decided to change him into a vampire to help her claim territory in Monterrey. Jasper's responsibility was to train young vampires and then kill them when they were no longer useful (about a year after their transformation- when their strength began to fade).

After about a century of this, he grew weary of the lifestyle and joined an old friend, Peter, and his mate Charlotte. Jasper left the two eventually, not wanting to feed on humans because he could feel his prey's emotions as they died. Alice, foreseeing that they would be together, met him in a half-empty diner in Philadelphia, and together they sought out the Cullen family. Due to his past, where he was able to feed on humans whenever he chose, Jasper lacks strong self-control. However, in Eclipse it is suggested that the "vegetarian" lifestyle is not Jasper's first choice and that this also affects his self-control. He is described as tall with honey blond hair, and is muscular but lean. His body is covered with crescent-shaped scars, after the many years of fighting and training newborn vampires.

In Twilight, Jasper accompanies Alice and Bella when they are hiding from James. He uses his ability to calm Bella when she is stressed or afraid. In New Moon, he attacks Bella after she gets a paper cut, prompting the Cullen family to leave Forks to protect Bella. In Eclipse, Jasper teaches the werewolves and vampires fighting techniques to defend themselves against newborn vampires. In Breaking Dawn, Jasper leaves with Alice to find a vampire-human hybrid, and returns with her to defend Renesmee from the Volturi.

Emmett Cullen (born Emmett McCarty) is Rosalie's husband, Carlisle and Esme's adopted son, and Edward, Alice, and Jasper's adoptive brother. Emmett is described as being tall, burly, extremely muscular, and, to most humans, the most intimidating of his adoptive siblings. He has slightly curly dark hair and dimpled cheeks.

Emmett was 20 and living in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, in 1935 when he was mauled by a bear. The injuries from the attack were severe and he was found by Rosalie, who had been hunting in the area at the time.

Rosalie, who was reminded of her friend's baby having the same curls, dimples, and innocent appearance, carried him over a hundred miles to Appalachia where Carlisle Cullen was, asking him to spare Emmett's life by turning him into a vampire. Emmett joined Carlisle's coven, but initially had trouble adjusting to the family's diet of animal blood. In Twilight, Emmett is at first wary of Bella, but eventually warms up to her. He often teases her for her clumsiness and constant blushing, and votes in favor of her becoming a vampire in New Moon. In Breaking Dawn Emmett jokingly makes innuendos about Bella's sex life, until being silenced when she defeats him in an arm wrestling match.

Rosalie Lillian Hale is the adopted daughter of Esme and Carlisle, adoptive sister of Edward, Alice, and Jasper, and wife of Emmett. Her physical age is 18, and she was born in 1915 in Rochester, New York, as the daughter of a banker. Rosalie is described as being the most beautiful person in the world, even for a vampire; she is tall, statuesque, and has long, wavy blonde hair. As a human, Rosalie was described as a woman who had beauty, elegance, class, and eyes resembling violets. Royce King II took an interest in her and soon the two became engaged. Rosalie was extremely envious of her good friend Vera and her baby boy and, while on a visit, noticed that she did not share the same relationship with Royce as Vera did with her husband.

Dismissing it, Rosalie later walked home and met an intoxicated Royce and his friends. Royce bragged about his fiancée's beauty, leading to her being beaten, presumably raped, and left to die. Carlisle, coming across her, decided to change her into a vampire. After her transformation, she tortured and killed those who had beaten her, including Royce, but did not drink their blood.

Rosalie first appears in Twilight, acting as the sister of Jasper. She is mean to Bella, jealous of her being human, and not wanting Bella to choose a life as a vampire. Rosalie is rather vain, self centered, and wishes to be human and have children, so much so that she would give up her immortality and beauty for it.

In New Moon, she mistakenly reports to Edward that Bella is dead after she supposedly commits suicide, though Bella was actually just partaking in the sport of cliff-diving. Edward proceeds to travel to Italy, desiring to have the Volturi kill him. In Eclipse, Rosalie reveals her past to Bella with the hopes that she will choose to stay human. She also joins the fight against a group of savage newborn vampires. In Breaking Dawn, Bella contacts Rosalie after finding out she is pregnant, knowing that Rosalie has always wanted children. She stays by Bella's side throughout the pregnancy, defending her choice to keep the baby. Rosalie acts as a guardian to the child, Renesmee, taking care of her while Bella is going through her transformation into a vampire. When the Volturi plot to destroy Renesmee, Rosalie helps gather vampire nomads to provide evidence that Renesmee isn't a danger.

Jacob Black is Bella's best friend. He is a Quileute Native American and a werewolf, later revealed to be a shape-shifter as he doesn't transform on the full moon. In Twilight, Jacob plays a minor role, being a forgotten childhood friend of Bella's. In an attempt to learn more about Cullens, Bella flirts with Jacob, and he tells her tribe legends about them being "the cold ones", or vampires. After Edward leaves Bella in New Moon, Bella spends much of her time with Jacob, trying to heal her broken heart and move on. Though at first only a friend, Jacob later falls in love with Bella. Although he spends most of his time in Eclipse trying to win Bella, in Breaking Dawn he imprints —an involuntary process in which a werewolf finds their soul mate— on Bella and Edward's daughter, Renesmee.

Isabella "Bella" Marie Swan (later Isabella Marie Cullen) is an average, clumsy, accident-prone girl who moves from Phoenix, Arizona, to Forks, Washington, to live with her father, Charlie. Though many boys are attracted to her when she arrives, she falls in love with Edward Cullen, a mysterious boy she discovers to be a vampire. In an attempt to protect Bella from his dangerous lifestyle, Edward leaves her. Bella falls into a depression and is comforted by her friend, Jacob Black. She comes to love Jacob as well, though not as deeply as she loves Edward. She eventually marries Edward and, after a complicated pregnancy, she gives birth to their daughter Renesmee, and becomes a vampire at 18. After her transformation she has the ability to shield her and others' minds from mental attacks.

Twilight: Director's Notebook Little Brown

Just before the dawn of the DVD, Twilight fans can get a dose of life on the set with Robert Pattinson (swoon).

Little, Brown and Company is releasing Twilight: Director's Notebook, by Catherine Hardwicke, on March 17.

The book follows the director's creative process throughout the making of the Pattz and Kristen Stewart blockbuster based on Stephenie Meyer's best-selling series. The tome is designed to replicate the notebook she kept on set.

“With this book, I tried to show fans and future directors some of the process that the crew and I went through filming Twilight,” Hardwicke says. “My challenge was to translate Stephenie’s powerful book and make you feel what she makes you feel when you read her works.”

The publishing house promises the inside secrets on casting, location scouting, wardrobe and storyboard sketches, and behind-the-scenes photographs.

The book's launch comes only four days before the March 21 release of the Twilight DVD. The film's sequel, New Moon, is scheduled for a Nov. 20, 2009, theatrical release, although Hardwicke will not be at the helm. Instead, Golden Compass director Chris Weitz will be taking the lead.

At Creme we get all the hard jobs and the worst luck. When Twilight went absolutely bananas at the NZ box office (yay!) we got the chance to run this interview with none other than the hot, hot, HOT Robert Pattinson! Yup, how awful for the poor Creme team!


Did this movie make you think about the supernatural?

Decode director Shane Drake says: “We shot in the forest – we were trying to sort of mimic the Twilight vibe which happens in the forest and in the trees. I think we’ve done a good job of trying to find that essence, but still being unique and original.”


Clearly you and Kristen have great chemistry! Do you think you can cultivate that kind of thing, or is it a case of either you have it or you don’t?

In a way I think you can cultivate it – to an extent. You need to be quite committed to it but definitely from the beginning there was that thing with Kristen and I felt like it was right. On the other hand, if you stay somewhat in character the whole time it eventually starts to rub off.


So you stayed in character?

Well, sort of. I mean, I didn’t say much. I thought that would be best – oh no, I’m revealing all my tricks! (Laughs) But I thought the best way to do it would be to not say anything to the rest of the cast. So, I didn’t talk to any member of the cast about anything but the movie. I think that always makes you more attractive if you don’t say anything so I was trying to do that.


Like Edward, you seem a bit offbeat – do you relate to him on that level?

Yeah, I think I tried to make the character more like that because I get he is supposed to be straight-laced in a lot of ways in the book and I didn’t see how to play that in a way that would seem attractive to people who don’t know about the book.


What do you think it is about this book that has created this phenomenon? It’s more than just a teen obsessive love story…

I think there’s quite a few different things. I think one of the things, the initial appeal, when I first read it when it wasn’t so hyped, I read it and I thought this is weird. It’s like Stephenie Meyer’s fantasy. It seemed like the author thought she was Bella – there are so many things about Edward’s character that was so specific. So in a lot of ways you feel very voyeuristic and that was one of the strange things which put me off it, to be honest, but then when I started doing the job that’s what I liked about it.

Canadian actor Bronson Pelletier’s agency has confirmed that he has landed a “major role” in New Moon. The question of the hour of course is which one. His resume includes a stint on Discovery kids DinoSapien where he was 19 when he gave this interview.

Canadians will recognize him from the series Renegadepress where he played the role of Jack Sinclair.

According to Wikipedia (which we realize isn’t always accurate) Bronson is a Native American First Nations(Apparently the right term for the majority of indigenous people from Canada. We stand corrected.) member of the Plains Cree tribe.

Ashley Greene on "New Moon" script!


I’m so excited. I finally, finally got the script … and it’s good. It’s really good,” the 22-year-old told "Extra". “I’m really excited to work with [new director] Chris Weitz. I finally spoke to him the other day.

“I like [the script] better than the first one,” she added. “I might be biased, because I have a bigger part.”

Greene also discussed the rumors that "90210" star AnnaLynne McCord could be cast in the sequel. “AnnaLynne is actually a friend of mine, so I have heard about her being cast,” she said. “There are a lot of rumors, but that one holds a little bit of weight … but I hope so. She’s a great girl.”

In a recent interview with Nylon, Greene’s co-star Kristen Stewart talked about living life in the paparazzi spotlight, but Ashley said her experience is nothing compared to what Stewart and Robert Pattinson deal with on a daily basis.

“It’s nice for me, because as Alice, a lot of people don’t recognize me, because my hair is longer and everything’s a little different, so it’s kind of slowly happening,” she said. “Versus poor Rob, [who] went from nobody knowing him to everything being documented.”

"Dakota Fanning joins New Moon," so read the headline of the Summit's announcement. It further continued to read, "Acclaimed actress Dakota Fanning has officially joined the cast. And will play fan favorite Jane in The Twilight Saga: New Moon." Whether this report is true or not is yet to be proven as the studio has yet to come up with a public statement of the matter.

Dakota Fanning has been linked to the Jane character for quite sometime now. Soon after rumors surfaced that the "Coraline" star is linked to "New Moon", confirmations were outed that Fanning is indeed in negotiation to star as Jane. She also has come out speaking about the character, saying "The character is what I would be excited about. It's kind of evil, something I've never done before, and it's a vampire. You know, it's really cool, so I really hope it works out."

A sequel to 2008 hit vampire drama "Twilight", "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" will be directed by "The Golden Compass" helmer Chris Weitz using the script penned by "Twilight" screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg. The romantic drama will see the return of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner among others.

Centering on the personal conflict Bella experiences, it will chronicle the time Bella Swan is left devastated by the abrupt departure of Edward Cullen. Finding solace in her friendship with Jacob Black, she soon finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves and her loyalty to the vampires is tested. Taylor Lautner Is Ripped and Ready for 'New Moon'

Taylor Lautner flashed his newly acquired pecs and abs for Access Hollywood in an interview to discuss New Moon, the forthcoming sequel to the wildly successful teenage vampire film Twilight.

Official word came last week that Lautner, 16, would reprise the role of werewolf Jacob Black in the new movie.

There had been speculation that he might not be on board for New Moon, due to the character's radical physical transformation in the book series.

"I think it was a few weeks ago I had put on 20 pounds," Taylor told Access Hollywood.

"I started working out the day after I finished filming Twilight because I knew it was a necessity for the character... I guaranteed 10 more pounds, and I've already put on six."

The young actor then flexed his muscles for the camera, and lifted his shirt to show his washboard stomach.

filming has primarily involved these two with some wolf shots thrown in here and there. However, while Taylor/Jacob will feature prominently, right now there are several “Edward” dream sequences planned, just so the crazy fan moms don’t lose their sh-t over not enough Robert Pattinson. Whether or not those parts make it to the final cut is another story.

Rob meanwhile shot his first scenes for New Moon yesterday. That’s right. Yesterday. He had not been on set up until that point. He’s been in Vancouver, he’s had some test photos taken, and wardrobe and makeup, and training, and rehearsals, but he had not been on set. Not a single frame was filmed until yesterday. Yesterday he was on set shooting with Kristen Stewart. More of the same throughout the week.

It looks like Dakota Fanning has some company in the Volturi clan for "New Moon." British actor Jamie Campbell-Bower, who has appeared in "RockNRolla" and "Sweeney Todd," will play Caius in the "Twilight" sequel.

The 20-year-old confirmed his casting to BBC News, saying being involved in the movie is "very exciting."

"You're the first people I've told," he said about the role of Caius, part of an Italian coven of vampires. "Shooting has already started, and I'm going over in June." Campbell-Bower admits that he has some work to do now that he's been cast in the film. "I hadn't read the books before," he said. "But it's a great thing to be a part of, and it did very well last year."

Although he was quick to divulge his own casting in the movie, he said he couldn't talk about anyone else who might be joining the cast. "I do know who else will be in it — but I can't tell you, unfortunately. But go online and have a look at the rumors," he said, adding, "They're all false. You're putting me in a terrible situation."

Campbell-Bower is also going to be working alongside heartthrob Robert Pattinson but doubts he'll be adding that title to his résumé anytime soon. "I doubt I'll get the same sort of adulation as Robert — but it's always nice when people recognize you for your work."

i dont agree with him casting as caius. he is way too young and the character was centuries old.

i don't know the guy :lol: I guess that's a good thing.

We don’t have confirmation on the ones in bold yet, so take it as rumor till further confirmed. We confirmed Tyson Houseman and Alex Meraz for sure earlier, and Bronson Pelletier seems to be confirmed.

Tinsel Korey has previous acting experience in film, but Kiowa Gordon seems to be a virtual unknown. From what I can find, he’s an 18 year old high school student that lives in Cave Creek, AZ (where Stephenie Meyer lives, coincidentally).

Michael Sheen Cast As Aro In ‘New Moon’

Another member of the Volturi has been cast. Michael Sheen joins the “New Moon” cast as Aro, joining fellow Volturi Dakota Fanning (Jane) and Jamie Campbell-Bower (Caius). Aro, the Volturi leader, can read the thoughts of those he has physically touched.

Sheen, having played Lucian in the “Underworld” series, is no stranger to the vampire vs. werewolf conflict. Although the films draw on some of the same themes as the “Twilight” series (hello forbidden love!), he will be playing for the other team this time, switching gears from werewolf to vampire. Could this provide some interesting insight for the Aro character?“New Moon” is currently in production in Vancouver, but we meet Sheen’s character in Italy — when Bella and Alice rush to save Edward’s life — so, no word yet on when Sheen will start shooting.

I was really rooting for Ben Barnes.. :( oh well..

The cast list for New Moon has been finally announced! New members of the cast include Daniel Cudmore as Felix, Christopher Heyerdahl as Marcus, Charlie Bewley as Demetri, Cameron Bright as Alec, and Graham Greene as Harry Clearwater.

6′4″ Canadian actor Christopher Heyerdahl will play Volturi member Marcus in New Moon. Heyerdahl has previously worked on projects such as Stargate Atlantis, Supernatural and Smallville.

Charlie Bewley, a newcomer from London that lives in Canada, will take on the role of Demetri from the Volturi in New Moon. Not much info is available on the actor, but he definitely seems to have the look for the part!

56-year old Canadian actor Graham Greene will play Harry Clearwater in New Moon. The actor has previously worked on projects such as Northern Exposure, Die Hard with a Vengeance and Dances with Wolves, for which he received an Academy Award nomination.

28-year old Canadian Daniel Cudmore will play Volturi member Felix in New Moon. He previously played the high-profile role of Colossus in the X-Men movies. He’s a colossus in real life, too–standing over 6′5″ tall.

16-year Canadian actor Cameron Bright will star alongside his twin sister Jane, played by Dakota Fanning, in New Moon. He has starred in movies such as Godsend, Birth, Running Scared, Ultraviolet, X-Men: The Last Stand and Thank You for Smoking.

Happy birthday, Rob!

"Twilight" phenom Robert Pattinson was joined by castmates Kristen Stewart, Ashley Greene, Jamie Bower and crew members to his 23rd birthday bash a the Global Grill and Satay bar in Vancouver, B.C.

According to RadarOnline.com, he arrived at around 9 p.m. and left about FOUR hours later, covering his head from paps when he hopped in a taxi.

Pattinson and his pals had champagne cocktails in the VIP section and chowed down on Kobe beef meatballs, lamb, steak, salads and roasted vegetables.

According to People, it wasn't just a cozy night with close friends. After Pattinson's location was posted on Twitter, swarms of fans arrived, trying to get pictures and autographs. And he actually signed photos and posed for photos with a quite a few fans.

After dinner, a platter of desserts -- cheesecake, créme brulee, warm chocolate coffee cake and white chocolate mousse -- was taken to the guests.



Later, the "Twilight" crew made its way to Afterglow, a small bar attached to the Global Grill, where it had more drinks, talked and listened to music until around 1 a.m.

Let’s hope Robert didn’t have to be on the set the next day.
