Ad-Aware: Turn off other applications (especially Internet apps) while you're scanning
If you're consistently having trouble with spyware and adware even after running scans, it's a good idea to close Internet Explorer, Firefox, and any other programs you have open that are accessing the Internet while you're scanning. The problem with leaving programs running, especially Internet-enabled ones, is that there's a remote chance spyware might have integrated itself thoroughly with--hypothetically, in theory, for example--Internet Explorer, and then Ad-Aware wouldn't scan the offending object because Windows would see it as "in use." Another minor possibility is that one of those malevolent programs could download new spyware while you're scanning (but that's less likely--and Ad-Aware would probably just catch it the next time around).
