Basic Shooting With the Olympus E410
You can get started right away with the Olympus E410 by first using the mode dial wheel to choose an automatic shooting mode. Turn the mode dial wheel to the setting that matches your environment; shooting modes include portrait, landscape, macro, sport and night portrait.
After you have selected your shooting mode, choose your subject and press the shutter button (located on the top of the camera) halfway to allow your Olympus E410 to focus. When you are ready to capture the image, press the shutter button down fully.
Be aware that besides the automatic shooting modes, the Olympus E410 also has 20 additional scene modes. Turn the mode dial wheel to Scene, and use the up and down arrows (located on the back of the camera) to select a scene from the LCD.

Advanced Shooting
For photographers entering into the digital SLR camera world, the first thing to learn is how to eliminate image noise and control light. The Olympus E410 (like many SLR cameras) is susceptible to image graininess, or image noise, when using higher ISO modes. This occurs while shooting at ISO settings above 400. To eliminate this noise, you must "stop your camera down." To "stop your Olympus E410 down" you must work with the shutter speed and aperture value to attain the perfect light and exposure for your images.
To check the current shutter speed and aperture value on the Olympus E410, you only need to press the shutter button halfway down. The shutter speed will be indicated on the lefthand side, and the aperture value will be on the right and indicated by "F" and then a number.
The shutter speed and aperture value on the Olympus E410 can be set automatically by selecting a shooting mode or scene, but you can also do it manually by first turning the mode dial wheel to M (manual).
To increase shutter speed and attain a longer exposure rate on the Olympus E410 in Manual mode, turn control dial in that is located just to the right of the mode dial wheel on the top of the camera counter clockwise. To decrease the shutter speed, turn the control dial clockwise.
Increasing the aperture value requires you to hold down the +/- button (located just in front of the control dial) and turning the control dial counter clockwise. This will increase the aperture value (F stops), which actually closes the aperture and allows less light.
