my technique is to download the video using IDM, after downloading about 5-10%, i open the temporary folder.
Usually located here:
C:\Users\nald\AppData\Roaming\IDM\DwnlData\nald
Then play the first part using VLC, (vlc can play movies which is still not finished, makes it streaming works)
after watching few minutes, you can decide to continue it or not..
