[INFO] Broadband, DSL, Cable
What is broadband? Difference with DSL? Cable Internet?
Broadband is a technically meaningless term invented by marketeers that basically means "go heap faster than modem"
Both DSL and Cable are "broadband" technologies, according to the marketeers. The term broadband refers to any type of transmission technique that carries several data channels over a common wire. DSL service, for example, combines separate voice and data channels over a single telephone line. In DSL, voice fills the low end of the frequency spectrum and data fills the high end.
In home networking, "broadband" usually refers to high-speed Internet access using this transmission technique. Both DSL and cable modem are common broadband Internet technologies. So-called broadband routers and broadband modems are network devices that support both DSL and cable
DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line and it is essentially a band of frequencies that is too high for the human ear to hear, placed on a telephone line, and done so in a way that allows these frequencies to carry data at a high rate of speed, compared to a modem. DSL is used as a slang term by the general public to mean "Internet access over a DSL line".
"Cable" in this context is a slang term meaning "Internet service over the cable network" In a Cable setup the cable company subtracts a few of the TV channels from the hundreds of channels that they could supply over the Cable TV system, and sets them aside for carrying data. Cable TV subscribers can then purchase a "cable modem" which plugs into the cable network on one end, and on the other plugs into an ethernet connection to your PC.
