the beast named 666 killed the two prophets; emperor caesar nero killed sts. peter and paul. one of the seven heads has a mortal wound in the neck, nero died of self inflicted wound in his throat by committing suicide. the beast's wound was healed, a new emperor rose in the person of domitian and revived the persecution of roman christians. the persecution was so severe that christians thought that nero came back from the grave. it was during the reign of domitian that st. john wrote the book of apocalypsis, it is domitian who commanded mandatory emperor worship and imposed a law that banned to engage in any industry in the empire anyone who has not the certificate of offering incense to the statue of the emperor.

what would be the use of scriptures if that is the case?
clearly, st. john wrote that for the christians of his time so that amidst in the turbulence of persecutions they may find comfort in the promises of Christ. to us, they are the lessons of courage and an invitation to follow their example.
