The highest grossing film of all time worldwide is Avatar at $2.787 billion. That film was a major cinematic event because of it being a technological breakthrough in three-dimensional immersion.
While another film will eventually break Avatar’s record, I don’t think it will be Avengers: Infinity War. Each new Avengers film (counting Captain America: Civil War as “Avengers 2.5”), has earned less money than the previous one, because the novelty of seeing superhero team-ups is gradually wearing off.
Infinity War also faces competition at the box office from Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story in its first month of release, and Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in its second month.
If Infinity War were the final Avengers film to be made, it might have a shot at outgrossing Marvel’s The Avengers, which earned $1.405 billion worldwide, but the fact is that there is a fourth Avengers film coming out next year, with presumably many more Avengers films coming down the line.
