Write your name in Baybayin a.k.a. Alibata [w/online transliterator]

INTRO
_
Before our present "Makabagong Alpabetong Filipino",we had the "Abakada".but way before that, our native writing is in "Baybayin" script which later on mistakenly renamed as "Alibata"-(which is derived from the first 3 letters of the arabic alphabet.)
__

The Baybayin script has 3 symbols which represent the five vowels a,e,i,o,u.
2lxeb9x.jpg

and basically, there are 14 symbols for consonants:ba,ka,da,ga,ha,la,ma,na,nga,pa,sa,ta,wa and ya.(See chart)
.
notice that vowels are single letters only while consonants consist of 2 letters each and they always end with a vowel.
for better understanding let's divide the consonants into 2sets:
consonants that ends with "A" are the basic symbols:ba,ka,da,ga,ha,la,ma,na and so on. ex. M,D,N in baybayin are Ma,Da,Na.
23vayk0.jpg

2nd set are the same with the 1st,only it has a hash mark or kudlit (some uses a dot or arrow head instead of kudlit).
this mark differentiates these 2nd set from the 1st.
when a kudlit is placed above a symbol, this consonant will end with a vowel "E or I".
so consonants like Ma,Da,Na would look like these:
21bqd74.jpg
and it would read as "me-de-ne"or "mi-di-ni" and when a kudlit is placed below a symbol, this consonant will have "O or U" vowel sound.thus Ma,Da,Na becomes "mo-do-no"or"mu-du-nu"

2n1b62b.jpg

The letter "R" don't have a unique symbol in early baybayin script.but it is represented by the "DA"symbol

14izqpx.jpg

then later on,a symbol for "R" was added in other variations of the script.this specific symbol was proposed by one of authorities in baybayin modernization,Norman Delos santos and is now widely used and accepted in baybayin communities.

2jbqsf9.jpg

__

SPANISH MODIFIED BAYBAYIN

aside from kudlit mark a cross "+"sign or "virama" is added below a consonant symbol.
the purpose of this is to omit the vowel sound from each consonant thus making it a single letter.
ex. Ma,Da,Na will become M,D,N
kcd1g.jpg

so how does your name look like in baybayin?
To give you an idea let me show you with my username "MEDAN" :D
.
.
the fun with our script is that words can be written in different ways possible.MEDAN can be written in 4ways,this is how it looks:
.
FIG.8
ap7ew6.jpg

.
FIG.9
f37s54.jpg

.
FIG.10
2582bu1.jpg

.
FIG.11
2q8u8ly.jpg

.
.
FIG8 IS THE PROPER AND PRACTICAL WAY OF WRITING IT.
.
.
How it works:
.
looking at the chart, basic symbols for MEDAN are Ma,Da,Na
FIG.12
23vayk0.jpg
but if we convert each letter of the word,
fxgz7k.jpg
kung babasahin ay ganito "ma-e-da-a-na"hindi "me-dan".gaya rin ng word na BOTE at IBON
ilx1tg.jpg
23sy7p1.jpg
iba na pag binasa kasi nga by syllable ang pagbasa sa baybayin letters.kaya pag sinalin ang word like MEDAN sa baybayin, hindi letra por letra kundi per syllable.my username has 2syllables "me/dan" basic characters:see fig.12 w/ kudlit above
21bqd74.jpg
w/kudlit below
2n1b62b.jpg
.
now what symbols do we use?ibabase natin sa sound ng word hindi sa spelling nito.so instead of looking for m,e,d,a,n in baybayin chart,we look for "me","da" and "n" so we use
23vayk0.jpg
ngayon ang gagawin natin para maging "ME" yung "MA" symbol, -> lagyan ng kudlit sa ibabaw.:)
now, the last letter of the 2nd syllable "dan" in me/dan have consonant "n"pero wala ng kasunod na vowel.sa early baybayin rules, ang word na consonant ang dulo na wala ng karugtong na vowel, ang last letter na yun ay di na sinusulat.so, MEDAN = MEDA
2pzh2xj.jpg

But in our time, its hard to tell if these character symbol means MEDAN or MEDAL.:hilo::noidea:.... continue next..

Re: Write your name in Baybayin a.k.a. Alibata [thread undr construction]

(cont'n) ...that's why nang sakupin tayo ng mga kastila, they modified our original Baybayin script because of their difficulty in reading it as well as writing foreign words into baybayin.(see spanish modified baybayin script) dito nagiging single letter na lang ang mga consonants kaya ang word na BOTE at IBON,ngayon ay ganito na isulat:
kBAhVpv.jpg
,
PcSc3Kt.jpg
.
NOTE:if we use the spanish modification, use it along with the original script. Therefore, my username MEDAN in Baybayin with spanish modification looks like this:
2nk51mq.jpg

much clearer to read in our time.
.
.
__

TIPS:
__
>kung pano bigkasin ang word, ganun din ang pag salin sa baybayin.
Ex. Tricycle= Traysikel
ohk0f9.jpg
or
2hqw5s7.jpg
__
Beautiful=Byutipul
2kqx3a.jpg
.
but if you really insist on transliterating every single letter of the word, use the spanish modification.
Ex. Beautiful=Beautipul
.
hwifpw.jpg
BUT IT'S NOT PROPER AND PRACTICAL,maling translation na and space consuming pa.pahirapan mo lang sarili mo.:D
kaya dun tayo sa tamang pagbaybay.i translate muna sa tagalog (MA-GA-N-DA) and then saka iconvert sa baybayin
vssozVn.jpg

_
>pinoy pronunciation of foreign words para madali ang pagsalin nito sa baybayin.
.
Ex. first love = pers lab
chauffeur= tsuper
valentine= balentayn
rachelle= reysyel
joel= dyowel
cheska=tseska
.
.
__

.
.
_
>automatically generates baybayin symbols which is the equivalent of the word you type in.options are:
A) using ORIGINAL BAYBAYIN SCRIPT > remember the rule in baybayin wherein pag ang pangalan o word ay may consonant na walang karugtong na vowel, ang consonant na iyon ay di na sinusulat pa.kaya magkakaron ng bawas na letra sa word sa resulta ng pagsasalin sa baybayin.so it's better to type in not the original spelling of the word.i-type ang word kung pano ito bigkasin ng tagalog gaya ng mga halimbawa sa itaas.
B) using BAYBAYIN SCRIPT WITH SPANISH MODIFICATION > gives you more accurate result in the translated word.can easily be read.suitable for foreign words.

sana po matutunan nyo rin.salamat po.enjoy:salute:

Nowadays, baybayin script is being revived in the form of tattoo art.I googled some of these images.credit goes to the original uploaders.

They say "think before you ink". this is why...

24q1zia.jpg
it reads "u-ni-te" for "unite" though it may seem right but i think not.baybayin is not intended for the english language, kaya dapat itranslate muna sa tagalog ang word na "unite" so i say its "magkaisa" then saka iconvert to baybayin.or ipronounce na lang in tagalog>"yunayt" then saka i convert to baybayin w/ spanish modification>"yu-na-y-t" ;)
.
.
.
14ugyvd.jpg
Brandon Vera's 4 elements
on his right shoulder blade is "ha-ngi-n".below that,"a-po-y".beside that,"tu-bi-g".and on his left shoulder blade is the problem.what suppose to be "mu-n-do" is actually "ma-n-do" because as you see,the character for "mu" is missing a kudlit below, thus making it "ma" for "mando".:D easy fix though, dagdag kudlit lang ayos na tattoo nya.pero di pa yata nya inaayos hanggang ngayon.
.
.
.
244nyvc.jpg
got this on google also.the uploader said it reads "a-b-la-ng" i think its a surname but this time,a virama is missing.meaning there's no cross mark below a character which is "ba".without it,it reads "a-ba-la-ng".
.
.
.
2m85jeb.jpg

it's a wrong spelling on this throw pillow."pi-na-a-ya" hindi "pinay" kasi sobra ng "a" character at walang cross mark sa baba ng "ya" character.
.
.
.
2pyq5as.jpg
"pi-no-ya" hindi "pi-noy" >wala rin kasing cross mark sa "ya" character.
.
.
.
LET'S REVIEW:
.
v63i41.png
2 versions of the word "pamilya".
1st using original baybayin>it reads "pa-mi-ya"('L' is omitted)
2nd using baybayin w/spanish modification> "pa-mi-l-ya" ('L' is retained)
so you see,mas madali mabasa ang word pag ginamitan ng virama(character w/ cross mark below it). sa original baybayin kasi ang words na sinusulat, para ding sms style writing.that is pinapaikli ang sulat by omitting letter(s).pero mga consonants lang sa isang word na wala ng karugtong na vowel ang tinatanggal, halimbawa nga ang word na "pamilya">kasunod ng letter "L" ay hindi vowel kundi consonant "Y" kaya sa orig baybayin,di na sya sinusulat. back then limited pa lang naman mga words ng mga natives kaya kahit kulang ang letra, gets na nila agad meaning nito. para din silang nagtetext noon.:D
.
.
ex. of words in original baybayin
9058v6.jpg
eto, kung di ko pa nachek sa site na pinagkuhanan ko nito,di ko magegets meaning nito.it reads "hi-na-ho-ta-pa-du/ru-no" :hilo: pero ang sabi it translates "serenity, courage, wisdom" kaya nagets ko din,"hinahon,tapang,runong/dunong" pala.original baybayin ginamit kaya may bawas sa mga letra.
.
.
.
28ur53t.jpg
on his left>"ma-bu-ha-a". right>"pi-li-pi-na".that's "mabuhay ang pilipinas"

:salute:

salamat po sa pagtangkilik.kesa nga naman magpatatoo ng chinese characters, bakit di pa sariling atin ang gamitin?yung mga may tatoo na chinese o ibang foreign characters e,naintindihan ba talaga nila bawat letra?alam lang nila what it suppose to mean.kung baybayin tatoo nga nagkakamali pa rin ang iba how much more sa ibang dialect pa?ika nga, think before you ink..at least now we have understanding on our own ancient script.:)

very informative parang ginawang body art ang Alibata, Astig!

eto po 3 ways to write your name "gerald" which sounds "je-rald"
but since walang letter "j" sa baybayin, ang magiging kahalili ng "j" sound
ay combination of letter "D" and "Y" like the word "dyosa" which sounds like "jo-sa".so ang ginamit natin for "J" sound ay "DY".

so eto na po mamili ka na lang
