Why do people want or need to partition their hard drive? The basic reason would be is that they can separate system files from their data files. So in case you need to reformat your hard drive due to virus or OS upgrade, you can safely do so without losing your data files.

Follow these steps:

1. Open your Partition Wizard and select the drive you want to split. In my case it’s my lone drive C:

2. Select Move/Resize Partition.

3. In the new window, specify on how you want to resize your drive. You can drag the slider or input a partition size. In my case, I want my drive C to be 150GB. Click Ok.

4. Back at the main screen, you will see an unallocated partition. Select that.

5. Then click Create Partition.

6. Name your partition. I’m going to name mine “Data”. Then specify the size you want the partition to be. I’m going to allocate the rest of space into my Data drive but you can choose to split it into multiple partitions. Click Ok.

7. Almost there. When everything’s in order, click Apply.

8. You may or may not get this message but it’s ok. Just click Restart Now.

At this point, your PC will restart and will start the partition process without booting to Windows. It might take a while depending your disk space so just wait it out.

That’s it! When your machine boots the next time, you will see your newly created partition. Check your system files and configuration to see if everything’s a miss. Mine’s all intact so Partition Wizard went perfectly for me.
