File server setup

Nananawagan po ako sa mga IT dyan ng mga company. Meron po bang mag mamagandang loob na makapag post ng Requirements and Configuration para sa File Server? Pwede po ba masagot yung tanong ko na mga sumusunod:

*Infrastructure Requirement?
---> Pwede po ba yung mga clone PC lang? if pwede, ano po Specs na kailangan ko?
---> Kung Server Infra naman po. Ano po ang minimum specs na kailangan ko?

*Configuration/Setup?
---> Pwede po ba malaman yung kung paano ang pag setup ng isang file server? For clone PC and Server Infra.
---> Plano ko po sana na parang meron isang centralized folder na naka disseminate per department pero department lang din nila ang dapat ma access nila.

*Tools and Software?
---> Ano po ba ang mga tools na gagamitin? May Software po ba na gagamitin o I-install para sa file server? Meron akong Nakita na FreeNAS pero wala po talaga akong idea mag setup ng file server.


Kung may kulang pa po ako na hindi ko naitanong pero necessity para sa file server paki sama nalang din po.

PS. one-man IT lang po kasi ako dito sa company at sa building namin, we are 40-50 employees.

pwede kang gumamit ng freenas opensource sya khit i3 proccesor bago 8gb yung memory pero dpat mas mataas bago may raid setup din sya depende sa gusto mung setup pwede din dito mag segragate ng authenticaition, kung may budget suggest ko synologynas madameng features madling i setup pwede mo din i connect sa domain mu.. lagayan mu din backup

Halos ganito rin ang status ko now, at naitanong ko sa isang fb page mas maganda nga lang ang tanong mo boss hehe.. Suggestion nila is mag NAS muna.. Yung synology kasi may authentication like active directory.

for file server, mas advisable ang nas lalo pa nasa 40-50 employees kayo, okay ang synology pero medyo may kamahalan, okay din ang qnap at buffalo.. lahat sila ay may option ng authentication thru active directory, also ang nas dapat may redundancy rin or may raid, usually raid 5 gamit ko, para pag may nasira 1 hard disk,buo pa rin files mo and plug and play lang usually ang replacement ng hard drives mo.. kung tight kayo sa budget, free nas nalang gamitin mo, madaming tutorial sa youtube, make sure lang nakabackup sa separate network / drive mga files mo para pag nasira yung nas mo, may backup ka pa..

Sa tingin mo Sir? Ano ang least size ng Storage size ang dapat ko ilagay? Pwede na kaya 2x 2TB para magamit ko pang RAID? Mirror lang kasi ang alam kong Setup ng RAID tsaka hindi ko pa na try mag setup.

Yung sa Network naman po, alam ko yung mga bagong MOBO supported na ang 1gbps I think sapat na po yun para sa 30-40 na employees tama po ba?

Plano ko kasi mag i5 Procie, 12-16GB RAM tapos 2x2TB na HDD.

Baka din may current or old setup ka dyan sir, pwede Makita diagram para lang magkaroon talaga ako ng idea for presentation na din sa Management? Para Makita ko din kung yung applicable setup para sa amin. Maraming Salamat po sa mga sagot niyo.

RAID 5 po ba yung Mirroring Sir? 2x2TB po sana ang plano ko Sir. Pero iniisip ko din kung too much yung size na yun para sa 30-40 employees. Kasi more on worksheets, documents and PDF lang naman. Mostly less than 100 mb lang per employee yung accumulated size in total tapos pag nag update ako monthly nasa below 5mb lang or minsan wala pa.


Baka naman meron ka old diagram mo sir, pwede po ba pa share?

Mirroring is RAID1 or RAID10. Para sa 30-40 employees, I'd consider RAID 5 to be risky. RAID6 ang minimum recommendation nowadays due to the size of individual disks. May 12TB disks na ngayon. Imagine 2 x 12TB disks failing in a RAID5 array. Goodbye ang data niyan. RAID6 requires a minimum of 4 disks.

Maganda ang FreeNAS para sa environment mo kasi tried and tested na ang filesystem tsaka RAID implementation niya. I'd probably use it too kung may setup ako na katulad ng sa iyo. Strongly recommended ang ECC RAM para sa bitrot protection. Not sure kung paano mo bibilhin ang ECC RAM sa DIY setup, or if desktop motherboards support ECC. Maganda sana kung may katulad sa US na binibentang Dell rack servers na pinaglumaan na ng mga data centers. Tulad nito sa eBay at nito.

RAID5:
- minimum of 3 disks

- 1 disk parity
- if 1 disk fails, your data is still accessible, but your array won't have redundancy anymore

RAID6:
- minimum of 4 disks
- 2-disk failure tolerance
- stripes data across disks (for performance; simultaneous file access)
- dual distributed parity (for redundancy; uptime protection)
- if 1 disk fails, your array is still functioning and your data is still protected by 1 parity disk
- if 2 disks fail, your data is still accessible, but your array won't have redundancy anymore
- slower performance than RAID10 due to overhead of 2 parity disks
- equivalent to RAIDZ2 in FreeNAS, SHR2 in Synology

May issues din ang RAID, but it's better than not having one at all in an environment such as yours. Bigger capacity means longer rebuild times kung may nag-fail na disk at pinalitan ng bago. Longer din ang scrubbing or error correction. In addition, more drives mean greater chances of disk failure.

Generally, time consuming mag-scale ng RAID. Kung kailangan mo ng 8TB usable capacity in two years or so, kailangang sabay-sabay bilhin ang 4 x 4TB disks in a RAID6 array. Tapos i-rebuild mo ang array.

Then, there's backup (data protection). Ano ang backup policy mo para sa data ng 30-40 employees? Usual recommendation would be 1 set for local, 1 set for offsite, and 1 set for remote (cloud storage). A set means there's one for daily backups, weekly backups, monthly backups, yearly backups. Kahit wala nang offsite, you still need extra disks for local backups, and another expense for a cloud backup subscription, such as Amazon S3, Glacier, or G Suite Drive.

Siguro nga mas madali kung mag-NAS appliance ka na lang tulad ng Synology. Maganda rin ang RAID implementation nila (Synology Hybrid Raid - SHR). Madali pang matutunan ang UI. There's a DIY equivalent (Xpenology), but I don't think that's a good idea for a production NAS.

Yun nga lang, may risks din with NAS appliances:

Better use CentOS para sa fileserver mo. Use DUAL GIGA PORT LAN cards.
About sa by department ang access, igroup mo yung users by department and config your shared folders by per department access only.

Pero kung gusto mo mas madali mag NAS ka na lang na supported lahat ng gusto mong i implement sa office nyo. Much better kung may LINK aggregation feature na NAS.

Ok ba na gawin file server din yun windows server 2019 na may active directory? or mas magandang ihiwalay yun file server?

habol lang kahit matagal na gamit po kayo centos LinuX then setup po samba server for file server maraming command nga lang saka configuration pero naiistallan naman ng gui yan like webmin dyan click click nalang
