Being RDBMS, almost the same lang in terms of performance, mySQL lang kase can work on other platforms like Linux and Solaris. SQLServer is strictly Windows Server based
Depende na yan sa user at purpose kase.
Normally kung Linux, PHP ang gamit mo you tendto use mySQL kase meron ka platform like WAMP.
If you use Windows platform and VB6 or any .NET languages, you tend to use SQLServer.
In terms of pricing mahal ang SQLServer, although may mga free editions like the MSDE and Express editions.
mySQL is free for open source applications pero may bayad din pag comercial apps tapos medyo mahal din ang support.
In terms of tools maganda ang tool set ng SQLserver pero meron na rin lumalabas na mga tools sa mySQL.
Isa sa pinaka gusto ko sa SQLServer2005 ay yung SQL-CLR combination nya,
you can make a .NET program or DLL (assembly ang tawag dun) and call it from within SQLServer,
it turned out napakalaking tulong sa mga projects ko yan.
So dito di lang yung app mo ang tumatawag ng SQLServer, SQLServer can also cal your app.
Galing yan in my viewpoint,

From a database developer’s perspective, choosing between a MySQL and SQL Server DBMS is a matter of the scale of the database application. For enterprise-level applications, SQL Server wins hands down. It has advanced set of SQL features, superior replication, clustering, security and management tools.
For lower-tier database applications, MySQL can offer the core functionality you require at a very low cost. Some might argue that the latest offering from MySQL has made the open source database system enterprise “worthy”, but this remains to be seen. The advanced functionalities implemented are yet to stabilise and be rationalised across the database engine. What's more, Microsoft has upped the ante with even more advanced features of its own. It’s up to MySQL to rise up to the challenge, but at this point in time MySQL is nowhere near the competitive enterprise field of the more established SQL Server 2005.
sa SQLServer never pa ako nasiraan ng database or never pa ako nagka problema sa application because of its database.
im handling data as large as 40gb with no problem.
Ganun din sa mySQL, pareho silang stable and delivers the intended purpose.
Over all, more on politics and economics na yan kung sino sa kanila ang gusto gamitin ng company or client.
Dati i develop systems for large companies and many users, so ang SQLServer ang inaasahan ko.
Ngayon most of my projects deal with small scale users like single users lang or sa isang location lang ang user, instead of SQLServer i use SQLite or SQLServer Compact Edition para sa standalone deployment.
No need to install a server, database lang ang kelangan, parang Access but with performance ng SQLServer saka pati yung programming nya pareho lang.
