Guitar talk. . .

This is a topic na namiss ko yata na i explain sa inyo........how will you know kung anung scale ang gagamitin to solo over a given chord progression...........

Lets take some examples;

1.) D-Em-D/F#-G-A7
Marami po nagsasabi na usually kung san nagsimulang chord ang kanta then most likely un ang scale na gagamitin mo....just like the chord progression above......nagsimula sya sa D major so I would say na D major scale ang gagamitin mo to solo over it.....but still i disgest natin kung bakit D major scale ang bagay dito.....Kung natatandaan nyo po topic sa page 489 para madetermine natin kung anung mga chords ang pasok sa mga common scales natin......like the one above.....anu ba ang chords na pasok sa D major scale?
D major scale
D E F# G A B C# D
Anu ung pasok na basic chords sa D major scale;
D Em F#m G A Bm C#dim D

So by knowing this we can figure it out kung anung pasok na chords sa D major scale.....which is yung example sa above.....D Em D/F# G A7......this is a I ii I IV V7 progression
D - pasok
Em - pasok pa rin, kahit gawin natin etong Em7 or Em9 pasok pa rin. Em7 consists of notes (E G B D) which is pasok pa rin sa D major scale, kahit ang Em9 pasok pa rin (E G B D F#)
D/F# - pasok pa rin eto, D major chord lang eto na inverted lang see pages 588 and 590 for chord inversion topics.....
G - pasok
A7 - A7 consists of notes A C# E G which is pasok pa rin sa D major scale notes above...

Also ma nonotice nyo sa bawat kanta nagreresolve lagi sa root note, which is yung example above, yung A7 chord ay nagreresolve lagi sa D major chord......this is a V7 I progression....which is a strong harmonic ending in western civilization music.....notice nyo na pag pnlay nyo ung A7 nagkakarun cya ng tension na parang gusto nyang magresolve into something, a chord, which should be the root note D........please try to play A7 then D repeatedly para malaman nyo ang ibig kong sabihin......listen to the strong ending nya........subukan nyo ring ibahin ung D pagkatapos ng A7.......hindi bagay....

V7 - is a 5th chord dominant chord which is kung titingnan nyo ung notes ng D major scale, pang lima ung A then gagawin nating dominant 7th chord = A7
I - is the root which is D major chord sa example natin

Panu natin malalaman ung dominant 7th chord ng isang given scale? Simple, kunin nyo ung pang limang note then gawin nyong dominant 7th chord.....

In case of G major scale, ang dominant 7th chord ay;
G major scale
G A B C D E F# G

Fifth note is D then gawing dominant 7th chord = D7

so D7-G - please try to play this and listen to the strong ending......if you try to repeatedly play the D7 chord, you will notice na parang may kulang and may gusto cyang puntahan hangga't hindi nyo tinatapos sa G chord....

Kahit sa minor scale ganun din, kunin nyo ung 5th note then gawing dominant 7th....for example the A minor scale
A B C D E F G A
Fifth note is E = gawing dominant 7th = Em7

So ang progression is Em7-Am

In a song, look for this dominant 7th chords (A7, E7, B7) or dominant 7th suspended chords (B7sus, G7sus, C#7sus), para makita nyo kung san sya nag reresolve para malaman nyo kung anung scale ang gagamitin......

Marunong naman cguro kayong mag power chords.....power chords consists of the root and the 5th.....mas madaling paraan eto para malaman ung dominant 7th that resolves to the root note.....

For example:
E5 power chord
------|
------|
------|
------|
--2--|
--0--|

open 6th string is the E note which is the root
2nd fret 5th string is B note which is the dominant 5th note

so B7 resolves strongly to E

Here are other examples;

C#5 power chord
-----|
-----|
-----|
--6-|
--4-|
-----|
5th string 4th fret is C# which is the root
4th string 6th fret is G# which is the dominant 5th

So G#7 resolves to C# chord strongly

Bawat root note ay may kanya kanyang dominant chords;
F#7 resolves to B
G7 resolves to C
G#7 resolves to C#
A7 resolves to D
A#7 resolves to D#
B7 resolves to E
C7 resolves to F
C#7 resolves to F#
D7 resolves to G
D#7 resolves to G#
E7 resolves to A
F7 resolves to A#
F#7 resolves to B

Another example of a chord progression;
A-E/G#-F#m-F#m7/E-D-A-Bm-E7sus-E7

Sa unang tingin most likely ay A major scale;
A major scale;
A B C# D E F# G# A
Pasok na chords sa A major scale;
A Bm C#m D (E or E7) F#m G#dim A

So malinaw na malinaw na lahat ng chords ay pasok sa A major scale.....
Yung E/G# is just a first inversion E major chord - please see pages 588 and 590 for the inversion of chords topic
F#m7/E is just a inverted F#m7 chord - F#m7 consist of the notes F# A C# E which is pasok pa rin sa A major scale......

And look at the E7sus and E7 chords, E7 resolves strongly to A just like i discussed above....this is another way to determine kung anung scale ang gagamitin......

modern century nman, narinig nyo n b ang pangalang matt bellamy, vocals and lead guitarist ng bndang Muse, epic mga tol.

This is another example;
Bm-E-A-D-A/C#-Bm-E7

Hmmm....tingnan nga natin kung pasok eto sa B minor scale kung san nagsimula ung kanta;
B minor scale;
B C# D E F# G A B
Bm C#dim D Em F#m G A Bm

Hays conflict ung mga chords ng B minor scale sa given chord progression natin.....this is a perfect example ng isang kanta na ang scale na ginamit does not correspond sa first chord of the song.....

So anu pong gagawin natin?
Bm-E-A-D-A/C#-Bm-E7

But we are given another clue, which is the E7 chord, this chord resolves to a A major chord;
A major scale
A B C# D E F# G# A
Pasok na chords sa A major scale;
A Bm C#m D (E or E7) F#m G#dim A

So pasok lahat ng chords sa progression natin sa A major scale.....so ang scale na gagamitin natin to solo over this chords ay A major scale......

Now another example is this one;
Stanza Chords:
C9-F-G-G7/F-Em-E/G#-Am-Am7-FM7-G7sus-G7
then
Refrain Chords:
Am-Am7-F-G#M7-A#

Hmmm....looking at the chords above, may mga chords na malinaw na nagfafall under C major scale; and also look at G7 chord, this dominant 7th chord strongly resolves to C major
C major scale;
C D E F G A B C
Pasok na chords sa C major scale;
C Dm Em F G Am Bdim C

May mga problema tayo sa mga chords na given above;
1.) C9 consists of the notes C E G A# D - pero walang A# sa C major scale
2.) F walang problema pasok eto
3.) G or G7 or G7/F even G7sus should be no problem
G=G B D no problem
G7 or G7/F = G B D F no problem
G7sus = G D F no problem
4.) Em = E G B walang problema
5.) E/G# = E G# B = may problema walang G# note sa C major scale = and this is an inverted E major scale
6.) Am or Am7 = walang problema
7.) F or FM7 = F A C E = wala pa ring problema
8.) may problema rin ang G#M7 and A# hays.....

so panu po eto?

Eto lang naiisip kong mga scales na may both A# and G#
Lahat major;
B C#m D#m E F# G#m A#dim B
C# D#m Fm F# G# A#m Cdim C#
D# Fm Gm G# A# Cm Ddim D#
F# G#m A#m B C# D#m Fdim F#
G# A#m Cm C# D# Fm Gdim G#

So ung D# major scale lang ang may both A# and G# note and also they are both major chords......hays ang hirap neto......

So writing down D# major scale again;
D# Fm Gm G# A# Cm Ddim D#

Manonotice nyo na yung relative minor scale ng D# major scale ay C minor (6th degree from the root = Aeolian)
Starting from C;
Cm Ddim D# Fm Gm G# A# Cm

And some of the chords in our given progressions falls under the C major scale; so pagdikitin natin yung C major scale at ung C minor scale; ang tawag dito ay Parallel Major/Minor Scales

C major scale
C Dm Em F G Am Bdim C
C minor scale
Cm Ddim D# Fm Gm G# A# Cm

Nagkaiba lang ung dalawang scales na eto sa 3rd, 6th and 7th notes, the rest pare pareho lang......

Here is again the C minor scale
C D D# F G G# A# C

Here are our problematic chords above;
G#M7 = consists of the notes G# C D# and G
A# = consists of the notes A# D F

I'm not sure, hindi ko alam ang motibo nya, pero in part, yes, in music you can combine scales and choose what chords you would like to use on certain parts of the song as long as it sounds good............

Here is another mind boggling example;
C-Am7-G-Dm-Am-A#-G7

Aus!!!! Ang ganda na sana, kung wala ung A# na chord, panigurado C major scale na eto....kaso may A# e so san naman nanggaling etong panggulo na chord na eto........

Kung ililista natin ung C major scale
C D E F G A B C
Pasok na chords sa C major scale
C Dm Em F G Am Bdim C

A# is one step lower sa B or one step higher sa A.....palitan kaya natin ng A# ung B....hmmmm

C D E F G A A# C

Mixolydian mode is the 5th degree of any major scale......
Mixolydian mode is a major scale but with a flat 7th.....aha!!!!!!

Ung mixolydian mode daw ay basically a major scale with the 7th flatted....just like the one we came up above!
C major scale
C D E F G A B C
C mixolydian mode
C D E F G A A# C

So we can use C mixolydian mode dito sa chord progression na eto......

Also kung mapapansin nyo.....C mixolydian is the 5th mode of what Major scale? Yes, it is the F major scale......

F major scale
F G A A# C D E F

Bilangin nyo ung C note from F, di ba panglima cya, and that means the mixolydian mode....

Another fact is we are actually in the F major scale, same notes but naka center sa C as root note. We are playing the C mixolydian mode of F major.

:welcome::welcome::welcome:

Actually mas maraming dissonance ung chord progressions nyo from the parent scale, mas nagiging interesting ung song or composition nyo......mas maraming unusual chords or chromatic elements nagkakaron ng ibang kulay yung song........dyan na derive ung jazz.....more on this on a separate topic............mas marami kayong nilabag na rules sa music theory mas interesting........

Thanks!

Wow Lupet ts :praise:...pwede b malaman how much nagastos mo dyn..
