This is a topic na namiss ko yata na i explain sa inyo........how will you know kung anung scale ang gagamitin to solo over a given chord progression...........
Lets take some examples;
1.) D-Em-D/F#-G-A7
Marami po nagsasabi na usually kung san nagsimulang chord ang kanta then most likely un ang scale na gagamitin mo....just like the chord progression above......nagsimula sya sa D major so I would say na D major scale ang gagamitin mo to solo over it.....but still i disgest natin kung bakit D major scale ang bagay dito.....Kung natatandaan nyo po topic sa page 489 para madetermine natin kung anung mga chords ang pasok sa mga common scales natin......like the one above.....anu ba ang chords na pasok sa D major scale?
D major scale
D E F# G A B C# D
Anu ung pasok na basic chords sa D major scale;
D Em F#m G A Bm C#dim D
So by knowing this we can figure it out kung anung pasok na chords sa D major scale.....which is yung example sa above.....D Em D/F# G A7......this is a I ii I IV V7 progression
D - pasok
Em - pasok pa rin, kahit gawin natin etong Em7 or Em9 pasok pa rin. Em7 consists of notes (E G B D) which is pasok pa rin sa D major scale, kahit ang Em9 pasok pa rin (E G B D F#)
D/F# - pasok pa rin eto, D major chord lang eto na inverted lang see pages 588 and 590 for chord inversion topics.....
G - pasok
A7 - A7 consists of notes A C# E G which is pasok pa rin sa D major scale notes above...
Also ma nonotice nyo sa bawat kanta nagreresolve lagi sa root note, which is yung example above, yung A7 chord ay nagreresolve lagi sa D major chord......this is a V7 I progression....which is a strong harmonic ending in western civilization music.....notice nyo na pag pnlay nyo ung A7 nagkakarun cya ng tension na parang gusto nyang magresolve into something, a chord, which should be the root note D........please try to play A7 then D repeatedly para malaman nyo ang ibig kong sabihin......listen to the strong ending nya........subukan nyo ring ibahin ung D pagkatapos ng A7.......hindi bagay....
V7 - is a 5th chord dominant chord which is kung titingnan nyo ung notes ng D major scale, pang lima ung A then gagawin nating dominant 7th chord = A7
I - is the root which is D major chord sa example natin
Panu natin malalaman ung dominant 7th chord ng isang given scale? Simple, kunin nyo ung pang limang note then gawin nyong dominant 7th chord.....
In case of G major scale, ang dominant 7th chord ay;
G major scale
G A B C D E F# G
Fifth note is D then gawing dominant 7th chord = D7
so D7-G - please try to play this and listen to the strong ending......if you try to repeatedly play the D7 chord, you will notice na parang may kulang and may gusto cyang puntahan hangga't hindi nyo tinatapos sa G chord....
Kahit sa minor scale ganun din, kunin nyo ung 5th note then gawing dominant 7th....for example the A minor scale
A B C D E F G A
Fifth note is E = gawing dominant 7th = Em7
So ang progression is Em7-Am
In a song, look for this dominant 7th chords (A7, E7, B7) or dominant 7th suspended chords (B7sus, G7sus, C#7sus), para makita nyo kung san sya nag reresolve para malaman nyo kung anung scale ang gagamitin......
Marunong naman cguro kayong mag power chords.....power chords consists of the root and the 5th.....mas madaling paraan eto para malaman ung dominant 7th that resolves to the root note.....
For example:
E5 power chord
------|
------|
------|
------|
--2--|
--0--|
open 6th string is the E note which is the root
2nd fret 5th string is B note which is the dominant 5th note
so B7 resolves strongly to E
Here are other examples;
C#5 power chord
-----|
-----|
-----|
--6-|
--4-|
-----|
5th string 4th fret is C# which is the root
4th string 6th fret is G# which is the dominant 5th
So G#7 resolves to C# chord strongly
Bawat root note ay may kanya kanyang dominant chords;
F#7 resolves to B
G7 resolves to C
G#7 resolves to C#
A7 resolves to D
A#7 resolves to D#
B7 resolves to E
C7 resolves to F
C#7 resolves to F#
D7 resolves to G
D#7 resolves to G#
E7 resolves to A
F7 resolves to A#
F#7 resolves to B
