Bulldogs to file protest as video evidence 'inconclusive'
NATIONAL University coach Eric Altamirano said on Sunday he is putting the Bulldogs' last-gasp loss loss to Far Eastern University, insisting the video evidence that RR Garcia’s late winner indeed beat the clock is inconclusive.
The Tamaraws edged out the Bulldogs, 77-75, in a wild game that was capped by an uncontested layup by Garcia that officials ruled he made with just a fraction of a second remaining in the clock.
Video replay of the contested play provided by television coveror ABS-CBN Sports showed the former league MVP appeared to have beaten the clock by a tenth of a second, convincing game officials to count the basket.
Altamirano obviously doesn’t agree.
“It’s really a questionable call,” said Altamirano. “Even the video, it couldn’t slow clearly. We reviewed it also, and it showed that may tip pa ng finger.
“We’ll just file a protest and see what happens,” he added.
In his opinion, Altamirano said game officials should have just allowed to be decided in an overtime period.
“In hindsight, they could have just played the game in overtime. Wala namang panalo sa overtime. If it is really questionable, if you have doubts, why not go into overtime,” said the NU coach.
UAAP basketball commissioner Ato Badolato said he will decide on the protest within the week. The Bulldogs can still appeal to the technical committee if the team isn’t satisfied with the commissioner’s decision.
The use of video replays to decide the outcome of a match has long been practiced in the league, with certain revisions adopted for this season.
