Windows 8 Tips

Windows 8 isn’t even out in beta yet, but it has built up quite a bit of buzz. Tech bloggers and analysts have been talking about it for months and months, but beyond the folks at Microsoft and some developers and reviewers, there have been very few who have had the opportunity to go hands on with this operating system.

Even though a lot of folks haven’t been able to try this new operating system, and it isn’t due out for quite some time, there are a lot of hints, tricks and tips already out for Windows 8. If you can get your hands on a copy of Windows 8 when it comes out on Beta, the following top 6 Windows 8 tips should help you get started using this brand new OS like a pro.

1. You don’t have to use the Ribbon Interface in the explorer windows. There are many users who may find this feature useful, making it easier to find and open files. Other users may not be so keen on this feature, finding it distracting and bulky. You can change this in the Computer Configuration. From here, select “Administrative Templates,” “Windows Components,” and finally “Windows Explorer.” You will need to select enabled for the “Start Windows Explorer with the Ribbon Minimized” option to hid the ribbons on your next startup.

2. There are plenty of new Keyboard shortcuts. While some of the old keyboard shortcuts will still work, there are some new ones that you get to use with Windows 8. The Windows Key and “W” brings up the settings search. Windows and “C” call up the simple “Start menu” along with the date and time. If you select Windows and “Q” the application search comes up. These are only a small sampling of the new shortcuts that are already known for this new operating system.

3. You can uninstall programs from the Start Menu. This is a handy new feature that will make it much easier to get unwanted programs off of your system. To uninstall a program from your Start Menu in Windows 8, right click on the icon for the program to get rid of select uninstall and click on it a second time. Windows 8 is made for touch screen systems, as they seem to be the next big thing; with touch screen you uninstall programs from the start menu by holding the program icon to get options, selecting uninstall from there.

4. Bring back the old control panel interface. If you think the new control panel that Windows 8 offers is a bit too new-fangled, you can get the old one back. Simply open the control panel and select “More Settings” at the bottom of the screen. You will see an option for selecting the old control panel interface.

5. Login Automatically. To set this feature, open the Run dialogue box and enter “netplwiz” to launch the User Accounts dialog box in Windows 8. Uncheck the option that requires users to enter a user name and password. Then you will need to enter the username and password of the account you want to be logged in automatically and select OK. Restart your system and automatic login is all set.

6. You can use a picture for a password. In the Control Panel, if you select “Users” you can create a picture password. Instead of the traditional alphanumeric keyword, Windows 8 lets you use a picture. You select the image and then do a serious of clicks and gestures over the image. To login with the picture passwords, you have to produce the same combinations of gestures on the images when you login, so don’t make your picture password too complicated.

Windows 8: Disable the Reveal Password Button
henever you type a password in the password field of a metro app or a website, a reveal password button will appear at the end of the field. Clicking this button will display your password on the screen. Security conscious users (and network administrators) will worry about this feature and many will want to disable it for extra security. This tutorial will show you how to do exactly that.

In Windows 8, you will notice a new icon when filling in your password. Its job is to let the user know if the password has been typed correctly or not. By leaving the button displayed, users leave open the possibility of revealing passwords with anybody who has access to the system.

Windows 8: Prevent Users from Uninstalling Metro Apps

In Windows 8 the process of uninstalling metro apps is rather easy. Therefore, when you have established the metro apps in Windows 8 the way you want, you may wish to prevent other users on the computer from uninstalling them. This tutorial will show you all the necessary steps to disable the uninstall metro apps feature.

Unlike normal desktop apps which can be uninstalled from the Control Panel, the metro apps can be uninstalled by just right-clicking on the apps’ tiles and choosing Uninstall. Although this makes the uninstall process less painful, it also increase the chance of uninstalling app by mistake. Luckily, you can disable the Uninstall button if you desire.

1. Press Winkey + R to open the Run window, type gpedit.msc to the field and hit OK to open the Local Group Policy Editor window.

2. When the Local Group Policy Editor window appears, navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar.

3. On the right side of the window, find the Prevent users from uninstalling applications from Start and double click on it.

4. By default, this option is set to Not Configured. We need to change it to Enabled to remove the Uninstall button from the Start screen.

5. Click OK at the bottom of the current window to save the setting.

You do not need to restart the system to see the change because it takes effect immediately. When you go to the Start screen and right-click on a metro app, the Uninstall button is gone.
The picture below is taken when the setting is not changed yet. The Uninstall button appears between the Unpin from Start and Smaller button.
This is is how it looks like when the Uninstall button disappears.

5.Windows 8: Disable the Store App
Although the Store app in Windows 8 is a wonderful place to download applications, many situations exist where blocking the Store app is prudent. For example, if the computer or tablet is open to the public, the Store app should be disabled so unwanted software cannot be installed. Likewise, systems that are used by children in an unmonitored environment will not Store app purchases possible.

Many companies now use tablets and computers in very public places. By having the Store app enabled, users can download a large variety of software onto the device which makes for a maintenance nightmare. Additionally, children will happily download a large variety of software if left unsupervised. As downloaded applications may have a wide range of unsuitable material, you will want access to the Store app blocked.

Obviously, this is does not take the place of strong parental controls too.

1. Press Winkey + R to open the Run window. Type in gpedit.msc to open the Local Group Policy Editor.

2. When the Group Policy Editor window appears, navigate to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components.

3. In the same section, scroll down and click on Store.

4. On the left side of the window, double-click on the Turn off the Store application option to configure it.

5. Set the setting from Not Configured to Enabled and click OK at the bottom of the window to save it.

6. Later, when you open the Store app, you will be notified by a message like below. Please note that the Store app can still be launcher. Later, if you want to re-enable it, just set the setting above to Disabled.

6.Windows 8 Email Client: Stop Pictures from Downloading Inside Emails
If you use the default Mail client for Windows 8 to access your email, you probably have noticed that photos attached to messages are downloaded and displayed automatically. Unfortunately, this may waste your Internet bandwidth. Also, privacy is compromised since the images you receive might not be appropriate to view at work. To be safe, you can disable this feature and force the application to display text only.

Microsoft is very schizophrenic about if pictures and images should load by default within email clients. If images are loaded, the data from the image download can be analyzed by email marketers to obtain some basic information about you. By downloading the image, the markets can assume that you viewed the message and can estimate your location based on your ip address. Using other sophisticated techniques, even your email address can be confirmed to their database. Therefore, you can see why Microsoft and many users do not want pictures automatically downloaded for all emails.

1. Access the Mail application from the Start screen or from the search result. If you are in Desktop mode, just press the Win key to switch to the Start screen.
9-12-2012-11-35-15-AM.png

2. When the Mail program is loaded, press Win key + I to open the specific Settings page for this application. From there, choose the Accounts option.
9-12-2012-11-36-07-AM1.png

3. After that, you will be presented with a list of all current accounts inside the application. Just choose the account in which you no longer want images to be automatically downloaded and displayed.
9-12-2012-11-36-23-AM.png

4. When you have accessed the email setting page, find the Automatically download external images option, and change it from on to off.
9-12-2012-11-37-28-AM.png

5.Exit the Settings page.

Windows 8 Mail: Turn Off Conversation View
metro11.jpg

By default, the Mail app in Windows 8 will automatically group all of your related emails into a single thread. Although this can help you keep track of information across the conversation, it may make managing emails difficult. This tutorial will help you turn this feature off and return to the traditional method of sorting emails according to the time they were received.

Please note that this feature is available with the Mail app included in Windows 8 RTM and up (build 4391). Prior versions of Windows 8 Release Preview or Developer Preview do not have this feature.

1. Open the Mail app from the Windows 8 Start screen or from the All Apps page. You can also type Mail while in the Start screen to quickly find this application.

10-12-2012-7-55-23-PM.png

2. When the Mail app is loaded, press Winkey + I to open the app’s Settings page. From there, choose Options.
10-12-2012-8-02-25-PM.png

3. In the Options page, find the Message list setting, which is located at the top. Then move the slider of the Group messages by conversation option to the left (Off).
10-12-2012-8-03-08-PM.png

4. Return to the Mail’s inbox. You will notice that all the email will now be sorted by date, without grouping them as conversations.

Useful Windows Key Shortcuts for Windows 8
Any true Windows guru has a mastery of the keyboard shortcuts. In the Windows 8 environment with less visual clues for mouse clicks, learning to navigate this shortcuts will even be more essential. Let us explore what the Windows Key shortcuts in Windows 8 allow us to do.

Without out the traditional Start menu, navigation through Windows 8 will be a bit of a different experience. Microsoft hopes that users will quickly adapt to the new visual style; however, many Windows 8 users are relying on traditional shortcuts instead.

Also called the home key, the meta key, the start key, and the flag key–the Windows Key has multiple related new shortcuts in Windows 8 as well.

All the shortcuts listed below are combinations using the Windows key on your keyboard.

How Do I Copy, Download, or Use Bing’s App Wallpaper as My Lock Screen in Windows 8?
Windows 8 comes with a Bing app which allows users to search the Internet without going to the Bing homepage. Like the main search page, the Bing app changes wallpaper daily. If you ever want to use Bing’s wallpaper as your desktop or lock screen background, just follow these directions.

Bing has always associated itself with beautiful backgrounds. So it should not be a surprise that the Bing application in Windows 8 continues with this tradition. Clever Microsoft has made Bing a potential source of new backgrounds for your Windows 8 installation as well.

1. Launch the Bing app from the Windows 8 Start screen. If the app is not pinned to the Start screen, you can find it in the All Apps page. You can also simply type Bing while in the Start screen to search.

10-13-2012-3-37-51-PM.png

2. When the Bing app is loaded, right-click on the wallpaper or press Winkey + Z to open the menu. Then choose one of the tasks from there. You can copy the picture to the clipboard and then paste it anywhere you want, save the picture as an image file to the hard disk, or directly set it as the lock screen picture.
10-13-2012-3-38-51-PM.png

3. If you choose the Copy option, you will be notified with a copying to clipboard message on the screen. After the message disappears, just paste the image anywhere you like.
10-13-2012-3-39-22-PM.png

4. If you click the Save As button, you will be redirected to a Files screen, which is equivalent to the Save As screen in previous Windows OS. Use the arrow next to the Files text and the Go up button to navigate around. Click Save to keep a copy of the image in your hard drive.
10-13-2012-3-39-35-PM.png

5. By clicking the Save As Lock Screen button, the image will be used as the lock screen picture immediately. You can lock the account to see the results.

6. One neat trick with the Bing app is that you can circle through and save the Bing backgrounds for the past seven days by pressing the left or right arrow button on your keyboard.

Windows 8: Manage Saved Passwords for Applications
metro11.jpg

New with Windows 8, users can manage all their saved passwords using the Windows Credential Manager. This feature can be useful when you want to keep track of all your logon information or recover passwords that you have forgotten. Likewise, it can also be dangerous if someone gains access to this page without your permission.

Considering all the applications and websites that require authentication, it is no wonder that people very frequently forget their username and password login information. Windows 8 has established the Credential Manager to allow the user to easily access and recover this information. Additionally, the Credential Manager can be used to delete authentication from sites or applications that are no longer used.

1. Go to the desktop, and press Winkey + I to open the Settings page. From there, choose Control Panel.

10-11-2012-9-23-04-PM.png

2. In the Control Panel window, click the User Accounts and Family Safety option to continue.
10-11-2012-9-32-08-PM.png

3. Choose the Credential Manager option from the Safety’s subcategories page.
10-11-2012-9-32-20-PM.png

4. When you have accessed the Credentials page, you will notice that it is divided into two areas: Web Credentials and Windows Credentials. The Web Credentials area contains logon information for websites which are saved by browsers such as IE, Chrome, or Firefox, or other Internet apps such as Mail or Skydrive. The Windows Credentials area contains generic information regarding your Windows Live accounts and other certificate-based credentials.
10-11-2012-9-33-50-PM.png

5. The interfaces of the two areas are similar, so we will focus on Web Credentials, where information for many important accounts is stored. At first glance, you will notice several web url are present on the page. Those are webpages for which you currently have your passwords saved on the system. Just click one of them to see additional information such as the website address, your username, roaming, password and the program which saves it.
10-11-2012-9-34-05-PM.png

7. If you want to remove the logon information, click Remove, and choose Yes when you see the prompt window.
