Udonis Haslem is a warrior, and he is one of the best players in the Miami Heat franchise history. Although his numbers are not very high, Haslem has something many players do not: heart and passion.
Last week, the Miami Heat’s biggest rivals in the East, the Indiana Pacers, traded their small forward Danny Granger for the Philadelphia 76ers forward, Evan Turner. Turner is a great and underrated player who will definitely have a big impact on the already great Pacers. However, the Pacers traded their long-time player who was loyal to the franchise.
It is all business, many will say. And they will be right if they say so.
However, the Miami Heat chose loyalty over it.
Evan Turner is having a career year, while Udonis Haslem on the other hand is posting career-low averages and spending more time on the bench than on the floor.
In the 2009-2010 season, Haslem averaged 9.9 points along with 8.1 rebounds per game. With those numbers and his passion, he could have gotten a good contract which would make him a lot of money. But he took a paycut so the other big free agents can sign with the Heat. Yes, not only did LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade take a paycut, Haslem did as well. In that season, he earned 7.1 million dollars off his contract, which is just a bit less than the $7.28 million he made in the next two years combined.
Not only did he take the paycut, but he also played well in the Heat’s Championship runs. As a matter of fact, during last year’s Playoffs, Haslem averaged a career-high in points and steals per 36 minutes.
Haslem sacrificed himself for the team, and the team sacrificed themselves for him.
Loyalty is rare, but it exists.
