What is Clash Royale

As we said above, Clash Royale is a turn-based strategy game that combines card collecting at the same time. Instead of building a village like in Clash of Clans, you collect cards (and buy more) to level up each character. Many of which are the same characters from Clash of Clans. Like skeletons, goblins, barbarians and more. clash-royale

The battlefield is split into two sides, and users will battle by taking turns and using cards (or troops) from their collection of cards. Users can level up their troops and attacking skills by earning coins (in game currency) and buying more cards. A duplicate card upgrades the troop, making it more powerful. Similar to how upgrades in Clash of Clans make giants stronger, hog riders more powerful, and wall breakers blast through walls.

You win the game by taking out the enemy players Castle, or the two defensive towers that each player has at the start of every battle. Taking turns and attacking costs elixir, and spells cost elixir too. However, it quickly refills so you won’t be waiting 10 minutes for enough elixir to play, like some games available for mobile devices.

It’s a fast-paced game and sometimes users won’t put down the required defense to protect their castle. As a result, each side has two towers for additional protection to keep the game flowing until you get the hang of it, take your turn, and choose which card to attack with. Or what troop you want to use. There are spells, arrows, skeletons, baby dragons and more. Everything is similar to Clash of Clans, but with a slightly different look and feel. Then of course the card-collecting and turn-by-turn attacking makes it substantially different.

It’s a similar yet different genre that many love. Taking the extremely popular idea of Clash of Clans and hitting another market segment to get even more users playing their games. Users can also buy gems (with real money) that can then be spent on Chests, to get more troops and cards, but more on that below.

Clash Royale: How to Play

When you play Clash Royale, you’ll need to be quick. Unlike Clash of Clans users have an unlimited supply of troops to attack with, but you only can bring 8-cards to any battle. Like any card-collecting game, switching them out is easy. Simply tap on the new card or troop, then tap the one you want to remove and they’re switched out.

Build your deck of cards before the battle, choose what’s strongest based on upgrades and get ready for a royal battle. Deploying troops to protect your Castle or attack the enemy costs elixir, but it refills quickly. Troops can be placed anywhere on your side at first, but as you take down the enemy side troops can be deployed closer. It’s all about strategy and making your way to their castle. Here’s a hands-on gameplay video from Supercell themselves.



As you can see from the video above it can be slow at times, or very fast. Spells are deployed like troops, and can be targeted anywhere on the map — including the enemy’s castle. This could come in handy while attacking. Dropping some spells on the castle near the end to get the victory.


Each player will take a turn dropping either offensive or defensive troops based on where they are in the war. It’s all about strategy. By confusing the enemy, overpowering them, or simply outsmarting the opponent and getting the win.

Clash Royale Cards

Above we mentioned cards, which is something many players are familiar with from other games. With Clash Royale cards are to be collected, won, or purchased. Players can unlock new troops by acquiring new cards, and duplicate cards will upgrade troops.

So how do you get cards? Users will need to open treasure chests they earn by winning battles, spending coins, or buying gems to get more. You can play for free, or spend real money to get more troops and upgrade them faster. Just like Clash of Clans and many other games. It’s free in a sense, but users can level up faster by spending real money.

The more cards of each character you have the higher level they are, and the more powerful of an attacker you become. Win more battles, earn more cards. And while it’s important to have lots of cards for different troops or spells to use at your disposal during a battle, leveling them up is just as important, if not more important for further gameplay. Many card games are confusing, but building your desk is extremely simply in Clash Royale, something many will enjoy.

Clash Royale on Android?

We already know your first question, which is when will Clash Royale be available for Android. Sadly right now Clash Royale is only available on iOS, and to make things worse it’s not even available in the United States.

Currently it’s in a soft launch “beta” period for testing, game balancing, and making sure servers can handle the load. Once Supercell feels it’s ready for a global release, it will become available for more players.

“Clash Royale is only available for iOS in Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and New Zealand. We hope to add more countries and platforms in the future.”

So far Supercell has made no official announcement regarding Clash Royale on Android. However, heading to the forum a lot of people expect a full release date in March. Giving the developers about three months to test it, then release it for everyone on iOS, and hopefully on Android at the same time. As soon as a release date for Android is unveiled, we’ll update with all the details.

Clash Royale Updates

This week the developers confirmed a major update is coming in early February with massive changes. An update will arrive next month with gameplay balancing and card changes to more than 10 different characters. Lowering the X-Bow, inferno, and balancing out the game as a whole. Being an early release, they still have a lot of work to do.

The changelog states nearly 15 tweaks will be coming, which is a sign that there is still plenty of updates needed before this game is ready for a global release. At this time the developers are still trying to get everything right, make it fun for everyone, keep players from being too overpowered, and find a good balance.


One question we keep hearing is once it’s released around the globe will current players be reset, as they’ll have a huge advantage over others and already be heavily upgraded. The answer to that is no, no players will get reset, and no one will have to start over.

For now only select few people on iOS outside the US can enjoy this popular and exciting new game, but expect tons of news in the coming weeks, or by the end of February. We don’t know how long it will take before it’s released in the United States (if at all) but so far it sounds like a game many people love, one that will be released sooner rather than later. How to win at Clash Royale – top tips for success


First things first, you’ll need to know how to get the game in any country, right now. Then, you’ll want some deck-building advice, as well as a complete breakdown of every card in the game.

Once you’ve got all that mastered, here are some general tips that will keep you alive, winning, and racking up trophies.




Distract, don’t defeat



If your opponent is sending someone to come topple your tower, like a Giant Skeleton, it can be tempting to counter it with another high-powered, and costly unit. But this isn’t strictly necessary.

If you use cheap cards, like the Skeleton or Spear Goblins, you can distract offensive enemies once they’re in range of a tower to keep them busy while your tower archers do the hard labour of wearing down that enemy.




Never sit at 10 Elixir



If you’re sitting at 10 Elixir, no more of that all-important purple goo will generate. This is a huge waste of Elixir and, as our next tip shows, could be the end of you.



Keep the Elixir advantage



Over at Reddit, The_RumHam says “if you can kill high Elixir cost cards with low Elixir cost cards, then you will have extra Elixir to cast cards that your opponent simply cannot afford to defend against”.

An example might be that if your opponent plays the Goblin Barrel (which costs four Elixir), you can instantly defeat that unit with Arrows (which only costs three Elixir). This gives you an advantage.

A five Elixir advantage over your opponent can essentially win the game, as a playing high-powered, tower-toppling unit like the Balloon when your opponent has no counter will make you unstoppable.

Don’t play too offensively



Throwing all your units at one of your opponent’s tower might seem like a good idea at the time, but just wait until your rival is free to send its best unit at your tower, while you’re still waiting for Elixir to build up.

Not so funny now, is it?

Play cautiously, and have the Elixir and the cards to defend anything your opponent might throw at you. When they make a mistake, or run out of Elixir, now is your chance to send a Prince or a Hog Rider down the lane and get an easy tower topple.



Watch TV Royale


Want to see how the pros do it? Watch their games on TV Royale, and analyse the moves they make, the moves they don’t make, the ways they counter attacks, and – of course – the cards they take into battle.

Also, if someone crushes you in the arena, make sure you watch the replay of that match. As painful as it might be to see yourself get crushed in slow motion, second-by-second detail, it can help you figure out exactly what you did wrong to give your opponent the upper hand.



Know the most common cards inside out



You probably won’t be going up against foes with Mirror cards, Mortars, and Minion Hordes anytime soon.

These cards are only unlocked in late arenas, and can be more complicated to use compared to your standard Knight, Giant, Archers, and so on.

On his YouTube channel, Clash With Ash breaks down the strengths and weaknesses of the most 14 common cards so you’ll know how to use them, and how to counter them, in play. You can worry about the more complicated and uncommon cards later.



Use units in tandem



You shouldn’t always think about cards as individual units. There are lots of combinations you can use to make two different units practically unstoppable. A Giant, for example, is formidable. But a Giant with a Balloon behind him? Good luck countering that in a hurry.

Also think about using melee warriors to protect your ranged archers.



Spend your gems wisely



If you’ve got a lot of gems (either from chests or in-app purchases), the last thing you want to do is spend them poorly.

At Reddit, Hazonskie’s got some crucial advice for where to spend that all-important currency.

Hazonskie says an epic from the shop will give you the best value, as long as you’re spending under 100 bucks. If money is no issue? Then spend away on magical chests.



Get gold fast


Money makes the world go round in Clash Royale, so knowing how to get this precious metal in large quantities is important. The Clash Royale Arena recommends opening chests and donating cards.

Donating cards might sound mad, but “you can donate in total 60 cards everyday, that’s 300 Gold everyday and 2100 Gold every week” – enough to buy one or two epic cards every week. Sounds like good business to us.


Keep an eye on the balance tweaks


Every so often, Supercell will issue a bunch of changes to the game, buffing and nerfing the power, cost, and abilities of each card.

Keep an eye on these changes (open the activity log from the battle screen and then then choose the inbox tab) and then tweak your deck or your strategies accordingly.



Take a break!


Finally – finding yourself becoming stressed out by being beaten? Don’t bash your head against the wall in frustration, get more angry, and end up losing even more trophies in a fit of rage.

Instead, stop playing, take a breath of fresh air, and do something else for a while. When you come back with a calm head you’ll have a much better chance of getting your winning streak back.
