Actually meron article yung Popular Mechanics tungkol sa pag reverse nang climate sa Mars, yung unang process lng naalala ko. Una daw ay gagawa sila nang artificial greenhouse through power plants and factories in mars... it could be ore refineries or methane power powerplants. So it means na makakatutulong yung pag harvest natin nang minerals at energy sa Mars.
Meron din article this last few months yung BBC science magazine about this large huge spaceship, inside of it is a sustainable eco system. Tinalakay din nila yung mga possible energy fuels na gagamitin kagaya nang nuclear fission, cold fission at solar sail.

Oo marami pero hindi ibig sabihin na habitable, marami pang factors na babasihan upang masasabi na habitable tlga ng isang planeta. Bumabasi lng ng mga scientest sa distance nang planeta sa isang star/sun kagaya nang distance natin sa ating sun tawag nila "Goldilocks Zone".

Even if we built a spacecraft that could reach light year speeds it would still take 10-100 years just to reach our neighboring stars. By the way our very own Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy some 100,000–120,000 light-years in diameter which contains approximately 100–400 billion stars and this one of trillions of galaxies in the Universe.

As an amateur futurist, i would say if we are serious enough to colonize a planet w/ an impossible distance from us.
-A spaceship which contains an A.I., she controls all the navigation and the automation of the ship.
The spaceship contains all the DNA's of most important species on earth including us humans.
So if the ship arrives in the said destination planet, the AI starts to recreate the life forms from the DNA database.
After all the life forms are created, the robots will serve as butchers or maid to the humans. The robots will nurture the health and as well as the minds of the humans.
Then the colonization begins.

Why i am optimistic about it?
First animal cloning is possible, so why not clone humans and other important animals like cows or chicken
3d printed tools and machine is now possible, someone had already printed a gun /w a 3d printed parts...
the first 3d printed living kidney organ.....wtf

There are lots of ideas and possibilities:
1. Spacecraft capable of light speed
2. Solar wind driven spacecraft with big sails
3. Ion propulsion drive spacecraft like in Star trek which is now in testing stage http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/
4. Worm hole this is the fastest way to to travel, but it's still a theory.
I think right now the greatest obstacle in all this is politics, budget and commercialism.
There are lots of ideas and possibilities:
1. Spacecraft capable of light speed
2. Solar wind driven spacecraft with big sails
3. Ion propulsion drive spacecraft like in Star trek which is now in testing stage http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/
4. Worm hole this is the fastest way to to travel, but it's still a theory.
I think right now the greatest obstacle in all this is politics, budget and commercialism.

I don't think that it's necessary to have a space colony for ordinary citizens, but it could be a special colony of scientist and researchers studying how we can survive space travels etc...
Although space colonies or a spaceport can be a refueling point if we have bases or cities in Mars or in Titan(one of Jupiter's moon).
