Mark Wahlberg Confirmed for Transformers 4

After an exceptionally successful collaboration on the upcoming Pain and Gain, Michael Bay has cast Academy Award-nominee Mark Wahlberg in the highly anticipated Transformers 4. The film will hit theaters June 27th, 2014. Here's what Michael Bay had to say about the news.

"Mark is awesome. We had a blast working on Pain and Gain and I'm so fired up to be back working with him. An actor of his caliber is the perfect guy to re-invigorate the franchise and carry on the Transformers legacy."


Bay will direct the next installment in the Transformers series, which begins shooting next spring. From Paramount Pictures, a division of Viacom, Inc., in association with Hasbro, the film will be produced by Don Murphy & Tom DeSanto, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Ian Bryce, and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Bay, Brian Goldner and Mark Vahradian.

Bay's first Transformers film was a box office sensation in 2007, opening at #1 and earning more than $700 million worldwide. His second installment Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009 grossed more than $830 million worldwide. In 2011, Transformers: Dark of the Moon was an even bigger hit worldwide, grossing more than a billion dollars to become the 5th highest grossing film of all time. To date, the franchise has earned more than $2.6 billion worldwide.

Transformers 4 comes to theaters June 29th, 2014 and stars Mark Wahlberg. The film is directed by Michael Bay.

Nicola Peltz and Brenton Thwaites Land ‘Transformers 4′ Leads

Brenton Thwaites and Nicola Peltz have just landed the leads in Transformers 4, joining Mark Wahlberg. Thwaites has a key role in Disney’s Maleficent, while The Last Airbender actress Peltz will next appear in A&E’s Bates Motel.

Peltz has won the part of Wahlberg’s daughter, a high school senior. Thwaites will play her boyfriend, who was described in the casting call as a race car driver but is now being identified by Twitch as a biker. While earlier reports indicated that young woman would be the protagonist, more recent updates suggest that her father may be the central character. In addition to its all-new human cast, the film will feature a fresh group of robot characters.

Both Peltz and Thwaites were among several actors who tested with director Michael Bay last month. Peltz beat out Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers), Isabelle Cornish (sister of Abbie) and Margaret Qualley (daughter of Andie Macdowell). The 17-year-old Peltz made her acting debut in 2006 with Deck the Halls, and is best known for her portrayal of Katara in M. Night Shyamalan’s poorly received The Last Airbender.

Thwaites was up against Luke Grimes (Taken 2), Landon Liboiron (Terra Nova), Hunter Parrish (Weeds), and Irish thespian Jack Reynor. Prior to his casting this summer as Maleficent‘s young prince, he was almost entirely unknown in the U.S. Between that role and this one, however, he could very well become one of Hollywood’s hottest up-and-comers.

Michael Bay Reveals 'Transformers 4' will take place four years after the end of Dark of the Moon


Here’s what he said about the casting of Wahlberg:

"You saw the whole Internet Rumor that he was on. And that wasn’t really true. And we were in the inception part of the story. And just talking with Steven Spielberg. And that was a great way to really take this franchise in a different direction. We’re doing a lot of things that are going to really make it feel fresh and new. And he’s an actor, he has accomplished, he’s an Academy Award Nominee and I love working with him and he’s got a great sense of comedy and great pathos. He’s a guy who can handle great action. And he never had a huge franchise. So this is something that really appealed to him. He said “I really want to show a movie to my kids”. You know? It kinda happened."

Bay then cleared up any misconceptions that Wahlberg was playing an older Sam Witwicky and talked a bit about the story.

"No no. The movie will continue four years from the Attack on Chicago; which is in the last movie. So it’s going to still have the same lineage. And it’s going a full new direction and feels very natural how it’s going in that direction, there is no way you’re going to ever find out what the story because you don’t have to dig through my trash but I shredded my trash…Pentagon level encryption on our computers. So good luck to ya! "
