I have windows 7 sa system ko.

Ask ko lng if panu ako magiinstall ng ubuntu 10.10 na walang masisira sa boot ng windows 7 ko? kasi I have read other forums na nagkaproblema sila. may grub loader pa etc etc.. e ayoko sana masira ung win 7 ko... kaya un...

Thanks po.. Im really interested sa OS na to, mabilis and astig ung interface... kakasawa kasi ung windows 7...

Hi Friend,

Welcome to the thread. :)

Another reason kung bakit nasisira: it happens to those who installed Microsoft (Windows) first and then Linux (such as Ubuntu) next. But that's normal, ganun naman talaga dapat ang order of installation.

Kasi when you install Ubuntu after Windows, Ubuntu will take over the Bootloader of Windows. So when you delete the partition containing Ubuntu, nasisira ang Bootloader. But there are a lot of quick fixes for that, and we can easily help you if that happens.

On my end, what I do is I create a small, separate/dedicated partition (around 100MB) so that GRUB (the Bootloader of Linux) is installed on that dedicated partition. That solves the problem that many are experiencing. So, whenever I delete the partition where Ubuntu is installed, hindi ko na nae-experience yung sinasabi ng nakararami. :)

By the way, all tutorials, shared knowledge, etc. are already consolidated on Page 1 of this thread to make it easier for new visitors to find the answers. Yung sinasabi kong workaround na ginagamit ko (dedicated GRUB partition) is already in Page 1.

Pasensya na at di ako masyadong nakakabisita lately; medyo busy sa work. I'm trying to finish what I need to do tonight para makapag-post ng mga kulang kong post/mga utang kong post.

Okay, best of luck...remember that you can always visit this thread as there are a lot of people who can help you. Remember also that my suggestion is for you TO NOT INSTALL LINUX YET. Try it out first via a "Live Session"...Linux nowadays can run directly from a CD/DVD or USB without having to install it. This is to help ensure that you can have a look around, try out and learn some stuff, before you finally decide to actually install Linux. Ginawa ang Live Session to ensure that there is an option for Windows users na safe...to try it out without risking to ruin their existing computer OS setup. :) Try it out first and magtanung-tanong ka muna dito sa thread.

Hi Friend,

.. pwede ba mkpginstall ng software kahit nka USB?

Um, puwedeng mag-install ng software technically, but it is not recommended to do so when you are using a Live Session. Same with installing drivers and running the Update Manager. :)

There is another method of installing Ubuntu na medyo safe or medyo "trial" din...ito naman yung Wubi method of installing (Wubi = Windows-based Ubuntu Installer). Ang logic ng method na ito is that Ubuntu is installed inside Windows as if it was just an application and not as an Operating System. So if you don't want to use Ubuntu anymore, in Windows you just go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Ubuntu from there. :)

Pros:

- Ubuntu is installed as if it was an application and not as if it was an Operating System.
- The benefit? Well, if you mess up your Ubuntu simply uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs in Windows. :)
- Because it can make Ubuntu easy to install/uninstall, it is newbie-friendly. It is typical for new users to sometimes mess up their Ubuntu and might end up having to do everything from scratch (delete/format partition, create a new partition again, re-install, etc.).
- Allows you to install applications, install drivers, etc.

Cons:

- Limit of disk space is 30GB only. But this is really not bad because Linux is made to be efficient in resources (hard disk space, memory, etc.). In Linux, 30GB is already considered a huge space. A new Ubuntu install only takes up 3GB of hard disk space based on my observation and experience, compared to a new Windows 7 install of 20GB.
- Performance is faster than a Live Session (CD/DVD or USB), but not optimal like when you really install Ubuntu via partitioning/normal method.

Here's a website that I was using when I was a newbie to Linux: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/index.php
Questions on Wubi? Check this out: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi
Other method of trying out Ubuntu...Virtualization: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox

For starters, I would recommend Wubi. Ganito rin ako nung nagsisimula ako sa Linux...just a tip for you. ;)

As long as "Wubi" method ang ginagamit mo, talagang sa C:/ siya mai-install, because in this case Ubuntu is being installed as if it was an application, and not as an OS.

In this method, since Ubuntu is installed as an application, then it means that as an application it can easily be uninstalled via the "Add/Remove Program" function of Windows. And because Ubuntu is treated as an "application", the Bootloader of Windows will not be affected because it will not be overwritten by Ubuntu in the first place.

Hi Friend,

You may want to read up on these:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1542673
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=792448

And finally...have you tried the easy methods first? Like:

1. Going to Systems->Administration->Additional Drivers? You need to have a working Internet connection by the way.
2. Going to the Ubuntu Software Center and then typing "ATI blah blah (model) in the seach box. Again, you need to have a working Internet connection.

Pasensya na as I don't have an ATI video card (I use NVIDIA). When I get the chance to visit my brother's place I will do some tests kasi he's using ATI. Laptop ba ito? Ano ang brand and model ng laptop mo (need more detail, very important yung model number please).
