It has more to do with career opportunity, financial security and immigration which are practically the same reasons why so many of our overseas workers naturalize especially in developed countries. All the more so when you consider that Wesley has an American girlfriend which is another strong motivation to stay put and build his life/family in America. Immigration wise the US has one of the strongest passports in the world so if he intends to play frequently in Europe where some of the most lucrative tournaments are held not to mention where Carlsen lives he avoids having to go for a visa interview each time he needs to play there. An added bonus is that he can easily visit his parents in Canada coz Americans don't need a visa to stay there for 6 months. Even USSR now Russia which has produced numerous World Champions have very strong players who changed their citizenship and no one can accuse that country for lack of support for their players. On the other hand even the great ex-World Champ Bobby Fischer gave up his US citizenship and became Icelandic just before he died. Wesley probably figured that he can always regain his Filipino citizenship in the future anyway maybe for retirement reasons if he wants to.
