Square Enix has officially announced Heroes of Ruin. As previously confirmed, the game features “seamless drop-in/drop-out co-op multiplayer.” There’s also a community site that will be available via HeroesOfRuin.com, which will “reward players further with daily challenges and quests available to complete in-game.” Plus, “the site will also give players a platform to meet other gamers, swap ideas and items and team-up in-game.”
Using the SpotPass functionality you can unlock rare items and unique challenges by visiting certain Wi-Fi hotspots. In theory, you could head to Best Buy with your 3DS and automatically receive a unique item. Or maybe you visit a Starbucks and get a new challenge to complete. And in regards to StreetPass, “character strengths and abilities can be greatly enhanced through accessing items from other players’ games.”
Heroes of Ruin will be playable at E3 and available in early 2012. There’s a teaser trailer after the break. Who else is excited to see what this game has to offer? On paper it’s sounding pretty awesome.

Heroes of Ruin will use Streetpass, Spotpass, and wireless connections in unique and exciting ways!
Square Enix produced a press release today with plenty of details on their upcoming title “Heroes of Ruin.” The game aims to take full advantage of all 3DS functions, using Streetpass and Spotpass in uniquely innovative ways and making social networking part of the game.
Details on story and character were absent from the release, but what it lacks in plot it more than makes up for in gameplay details. Lee Singleton, General Manager of Square Enix London Studios, stated that “we wanted to take the game experience beyond the confines of the console’s two screens…Nintendo 3DS’ online and social features allow us to do so much more than multiplayer…give[ing] players innovative ways of enhancing their experience.” According to the release, the game will take advantage of streetpass, spotpass, and the upcoming internet browser as well as wireless connectivity to create unique opportunities on a daily basis.
Social networking will play a major role in “Heroes of Ruin.” Not only will there opportunities for standard co-op, which players can drop in and out of without interrupting a solo campaign, but a companion website will make way for plenty of connecting with friends for tips and conversations as well as item swapping and new-friend-making. Streetpass, rather than just allowing for a one-off battle or item unlocks, will create what Square Enix is calling a ‘Traders’ Network’, upon which you can trade and/or buy and sell rare and valuble items among friends and random passers-by. The Network will expand with each new streetpass encounter, though details on how are as yet unreleased.
Daily updates will also push “Heroes” to the forefront, as Square Enix plans for wireless connectivity to allow for daily quests and challenges, as well as similar daily updates on the companion website, which launches in June of this year. Spotpass will add even more variety to the game, providing one-off items or unique challenges in wi-fi hot spots that support the Spotpass function.
I, for one, am incredibly excited to see developers getting creative with the 3DS-exclusive functions. I hope that this will be a trend that we see in abundance at this year’s E3 Convention, where “Heroes” will be playable at the Square Enix booth. The game is set to release early next year.

A brand new adventure featuring a line-up of unlikely heroes and deep social functionality
London (31 May, 2011) – Square Enix London Studios, part of Square Enix Europe, today announces HEROES OF RUIN, a brand new adventure featuring four unlikely heroes brought together to form a fearsome alliance. Custom-built for Nintendo 3DS™, with support for online play and a wealth of social gaming features, players will find a new experience awaits them every day.
“With HEROES OF RUIN we wanted to take the game experience beyond the confines of the console’s two screens,” said Lee Singleton, General Manager, Square Enix London Studios. “Nintendo 3DS’ online and social features allow us to do so much more than multiplayer, using both StreetPass™ and SpotPass™ to give players innovative ways of enhancing their experience.”
HEROES OF RUIN uses StreetPass to create an inventive in-game ‘Traders’ Network’ where players can buy and sell rare and powerful items picked up in battle. With an ever-changing inventory updated from each player passed in public, character strengths and abilities can be greatly enhanced through accessing items from other players’ games. Outside of the game, HEROES OF RUIN makes use of SpotPass to reward players with rare one-off items or unique challenges through local wi-fi hotspots. The official HEROES OF RUIN community website will reward players further with daily challenges and quests available to complete in-game. With social media functionality, the site will also give players a platform to meet other gamers, swap ideas and items and team-up in-game.
HEROES OF RUIN challenges players to carve their own adventure, joining forces with other heroes through seamless drop-in/drop-out co-op multiplayer or venturing forth alone. Players will enter an ever-changing world where danger waits around every corner. Heroes can explore and fight through wild, varied and dynamic environments, discovering new layouts and routes each time they play. Packed with strange and deadly creatures, these dangerous lands will stretch players’ combat and tactical skills as they enhance their character, collecting loot, weapons and armour to empower them on their quest.
HEROES OF RUIN will be playable at E3 on the Square Enix stand (South Hall, Booth 1647) and will be available in early 2012 for Nintendo 3DS. The game is not yet rated. For more information and updates, join the HEROES OF RUIN community at www.HeroesOfRuin.com.
