Re: HOW TO's

ANDROID HOW TO's

I am not responsible if you BRICK your PHONE! Use at your own risk!

HOW TO:

  • Flash custom ROM to your Androidphone
  • Install .apk file on your android
  • Install an APP as a SYSTEM APP
  • Use Task Killer Effectively
  • Battery Reconditioning
  • Take ScreenShot
  • Tether Your Phone
  • Copy Contacts, SMS, And Other Data From Symbian, Windows Mobile, And BlackBerry To Android
  • Root your Phone

Flash custom ROM to your Androidphone

Code:
[B]The Steps[/B]

[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]1. Root Your Phone.
2. Install Rom Manager App
3. Back Up
4. Download the Custom Rom of your phone
5. Flash Custom Rom
6. Dont like your custom ROM, and want to go back? Restore it!
[/COLOR]
[B][COLOR="Red"]ROOT YOUR PHONE[/COLOR][/B]

[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]Rooting is usually a 5 minute process, and many guides around the web explain what that process is for your exact phone model and Android version combinations, just Google "YOUR_PHONE_MODEL root".
Now that you have root, let’s proceed to the next step.[/COLOR]

[B][COLOR="Red"]Install Rom Manager[/COLOR][/B]

[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]Go to the Android Market on your phone or [URL="http://www.symbianize.com/showthread.php?t=285681"]here[/URL] and install ROM Manager.
This excellent application handles backing up and restoring, as well as flashing new ROMs, all from an easy user interface. This application requires root
[/COLOR]
[B][COLOR="Red"]Back Up![/COLOR][/B]

[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]* Now, before we can back up, we need to install a Recovery Image specific to your phone. Don’t worry – ROM Manager does it for you automatically with only a press of a button.

* If you have successfully installed a recovery image, you’re ready to start your first backup.
This is a 1-click operation.
Select "Backup Current ROM" and your phone will reboot and start the full backup onto your SD card.

*After the backup is complete, your phone should boot back up normally. You’re done!
The backup is located on your SD card in the clockworkmod/backup/SOMEDATETIME directory[/COLOR]

[B][COLOR="Red"]Download custom Rom[/COLOR][/B]

[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]* Here is where you need to do a bit of research and find the ROM image you want to put on your phone. If you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, again, Google can help you – just search for "YOUR_PHONE_MODEL ROM" and look around.

* Download the ROM image, which is usually a zip archive, and copy it into the root folder of your SD card.
Important: you do not unzip the .zip file – just copy it as is.
You can do it by
1. Attaching the phone with a USB cable and selecting the option of mounting the SD card to be used as a drive on the computer
or
2. Unmounting the SD card, physically taking it out of the phone, and inserting into your own card reader
or
3. Downloading the ROM straight from the phone browser[/COLOR]

[B][COLOR="Red"]Flashing![/COLOR][/B]

[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]The process of installing new firmware or low-level system software in general is called flashing.

We will be flashing the new custom ROM over the stock one that came with your phone.

1. Pop open the ROM Manager and click "Install ROM from SD Card"
   The ROM you downloaded in step 4 should show up in the list. If it doesn’t, make sure you’ve put it into the root folder of the SD card.

2. Click on the ROM and you should receive a popup inviting you to
back up existing ROM (which you should do unless you’ve already backed up manually) and
wipe data and cache, which you should only do if you want to do a clean install, i.e. when upgrading from the stock ROM. Note: this does not wipe your SD card data – it only wipes the phone’s internal memory.

3. Follow the rest of the prompts and voila – the ROM is being installed![/COLOR]

[B][COLOR="Red"]Want to go back? Restore It![/COLOR][/B]

[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]1. Install and load up the ROM Manager app in the custom ROM you flashed
2. Now use the "Manage and Restore Backups" menu to find your backup and restore it (including the OS itself and all the apps, settings – everything that you backed up).

 After you’re done restoring, you’ll be back to your original OS as if nothing ever happened (was it just a dream?)
[/COLOR]
[I][COLOR="Red"]Note: This is just an overview on how Rooting/Flashing works PLEASE BE VERY CAREFULL! If you still do not understand how this works PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS! tnx![/COLOR][/I]

Install an APP as a SYSTEM APP

Code:
[B]Terminal emulator way[/B]:

[COLOR="DarkOrange"]$ su
$ mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
$ rm /system/app/ "filename.odex"
$ cat /sdcard/"filename.apk" > /system/app/"filename.apk"
$ mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
$ sync
$ reboot
Do Not use quotations i put them there so you know to put the live wallpaper apk name there.[/COLOR]

[B]Root explorer way[/B]:

[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]In Root Explorer, copy the apk file you want to put in /system/app
1.Navigate to the /system/app directory
2.Tap the Mount R/W button on the top right
3.Tap Paste
4.Scroll down to the pasted apk, long press on it and select Permissions (you'll see 9 check boxes when you do this)
5.Check the Read and Write buttons for User, and only the Read boxes next to Group and Others, then tap OK
(once you're done, the read/write permissions under the app name should be the same as all the other apps listed (rw-r--r--))
Reboot.[/COLOR]

Use Task Killer Effectively

Code:
[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]Instead of using Advance Task Killers on killing System files (which most people, and have led them to believe that ATK is useless) that are needed to run in the background in order for your android to work 100%, use ATK to kill games instead.

This is for people who constantly open different games to play everyday. I have noticed that every time I open a game (i.e. Angry birds, Fruit ninja, and etc) these games are still running in the background, even though you have fully closed the games.

If you go to your Manage Application, and click one of the games you played recently and closed, if the game still has "Force Stop" clickable, it means it is still running in the background and using memory which also means using some of the battery life.

Everything adds up, if you practice this routine, this could give you a whopping 10%-20% or more depending on your activities! on your battery life!

This works on applications as well but not most of them, a regular app for voice-to-commands, for some reason it comes back right after you kill it, even though it was never in the system to begin with.[/COLOR]
[COLOR="Red"]Note: If you are on Froyo 2.2 task killers may not be necessary[/COLOR]

Battery Reconditioning

Code:
Battery Reconditioning:
[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]1. Charge phone completely, leave plugged into power
2. Boot into recovery
3. Wipe battery stats
4. Reboot
5. Remove power cable
6. Drain that sucker all the way
7. Recharge fully
8. Rejoice!"[/COLOR]

Take ScreenShot

Code:
There are several applications available in the Android market that allow for screen capture. Apps like Drocap2, Screen Capture , and Screenshot It, allow for use of hotkeys, voice commands, or shaking the phone to activate a screen capture. Once captured, the menu option for the device will allow sharing of this picture via email,
or saving to the SD card. Currently, all Market apps that allow the user to screen capture require root access. Since most users do not want to root their Android devices, a better option may be using the Android Development Software. This does require you to connect the phone to a computer via USB rather than just capturing from the phone itself.
There are three main steps to accomplish this.

STEP 1: Download the Android Development Software

Navigate to the developer website http://developer.android.com in the computer’s browser and select the SDK tab. Download the SDK file that matches your computer’s operating system. Once the SDK zip file is saved, extract all the files and run the file “SDK Setup.exe”.

*If an error message “failed to fetch URL” appears, close the error window, choose settings, and select the box for “force https://…sources to be fetched using http://”. Close the popup window.*

Select the “Available Packages” menu in the left hand bar and select the sites, packages, and archives listed on the right that apply to the phone being connected. Choose the “install” button. At the next window, choose “accept all”, and choose “install”.

STEP 2: Installation of Android USB Driver

Make sure that USB debugging is checked under the Settings/Applications/Development folder on the phone. Connect the Android phone to the computer. Allow the phone to enable USB storage. As soon as this is connected, the default driver installation software will open. This should find the correct driver.

*If the correct driver does not install, cancel out of the installation window and manually update the driver for the phone from the device manager. The updated driver will be located in the USB-Driver folder located in the Android-SDK extracted folder. Be sure to select “include all subfolders”. Verify the driver shows no issues in the device manager.*

STEP 3: Running the Android Simulator

Open the Tools folder located in the Android-SDK folder and run the DDMS file.
This will open the simulator for the connected phone. It may take a minute for the menus to load.
Choose the device menu and select “screen capture”. This will capture the current screen on the Android phone. Refreshing will display any screen changes on the Android phone. Use the “save” button to save the screen shot. Once saved it is easy to email this file wherever it needs to go.

Tether Your Phone

Code:
[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]STEP 1: Download and install the PdaNet app.

Supporting USB and Bluetooth, PdaNet gives you full Internet access through your Android device, and it keeps your device charged at the same time, which is an issue with tethering. There is a PdaNet trial period, at which point the free version blocks access to secure websites. If this is an issue, the full version costs ~$24. There are free alternatives, but those that are as functional as PdaNet involve rooting the phone.

STEP 2: Download and install the PdaNet companion for Windows.

Ensure that you download and install the appropriate version for your edition of Windows.

STEP 3: Configure your Android connection.

Press Menu, then Settings, then Applications, and then Development. Check the box labeled USB Debugging, and then press OK when the confirmation dialog appears. This allows PdaNet to stream directly between the Android device and the PC. However, it is important to disable USB Debugging when you are no longer tethering since it slows down the device unnecessarily.

STEP 4: Connect the device to the PC.

Connect your Android phone to the computer via a USB cable or Bluetooth.

STEP 5: Activate the PdaNet app.

Activate the app, and select the Enable USB Tether option, which is on the program’s main screen. Alternatively, there is a Bluetooth option to enable for those using that method.

STEP 6: Connect

The PdaNet app should alert you that it is running as a background service. Start the PdaNet application for Windows. A cellphone-like icon should appear in your system tray. Right-click the icon, and select Connect. That’s it. You’ve now tethered your PC to your Android phone.[/COLOR]
