Atheists and Agnostics Meeting Place

meron bang talagang "anti-atheist" na group or movements stormer?

Outside of theists and established religions especially in hardline Islamic countries in Africa and the Mideast, none that I know of—though if there are, it's not hard to imagine their reason for being: atheism and its corollary secularism is gaining inroads everywhere, even in those hardline countries I mentioned, though at the cost of life for many. In the West, the fad nowadays is well-publicized debates and all kinds of exchanges across internet forums, as we do here at SB.

There is a Report on the Worst Countries in the World for Atheist Citizens for those interested. There is none for any special anti-atheist group, however (correct me if I'm wrong, though). Some theists and atheists are just in for the laughs it sometimes appears, like a few of the posts I saw in your link.

New Research Suggests Monogamy Killed the Penis Bone in Humans :smoke:

attachment.php

Although we call erections “boners,” anyone who has basic familiarity with human anatomy knows our slang deceives us—for unlike most mammals, men have no penis bones. For decades scientists have wondered, “Why? No? Penis Bone?” A new study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society might finally answer the mystery of what killed the penis bone: monogamy.

To explain how, I gotta lay out some key baculum facts—that’s the scientific name for the penis bone—for all the PB n00bs out there. Penis bones are diverse in shape and size across many different mammals. The baculum of a walrus is two-feet long. In the bonobo, it is eight millimeters. In this new study, scientists set out to trace the evolutionary history of the baculum to account for the vast differences in penis bone length amongst animals.
The study ultimately discovered “a clear [relationship] between the bone’s length and a species’ promiscuity: more promiscuous species had longer bacula,” writes The Economist.

Kit Opie, a postdoctoral research fellow at University College London who led the study, tells The Guardian that penis bone length was longer in males that engaged in “prolonged intromission”—meaning when species take more than three minutes to mate. Males use “prolonged intromission” to keep the female away from his competition while he impregnates her. Matilda Brindle, the study’s co-author, explains it like this on The Conversation:

Far from simply being a nice way to spend an afternoon, prolonging intromission like this is a way for a male to prevent a female from sneaking off and mating with anyone else before his sperm have had a chance to work their magic.

What scientists now theorize is that human lost their penis bones when monogamy became prevalent, about 1.9 million years ago. They no longer had the pressing need to keep away the competition by fucking for a long time. After all, “the average duration from penetration to ejaculation for human males is less than two minutes,” Brindle reminds us. (Dudes... get it together...) Nevertheless, despite the grumblings of lonely hearts, human males simply don’t have intense sexual competition because human females tend to mate with one male at a time.

And that’s why you don’t have a dick bone. Good night, boys.

"less than 2 minutes"

is this for real?!

they prob averaged superquickies!

this one comment from someone called MatisyahuSerious is instant classic:

monogamy took the bone, and matrimony took the balls.
shafted again, boys.

Guys I have a question lang. Though, I could be wrong. Base lang yan sa interpretasyon ko sa mga nagsasabi niyan.

Nag iisip ako kung tama ba na eto yung isasagot ko at i eexplain bakit nangyayari yung mga ganun.

NERDY TAKE:

Einstein and to some extent deBroglie and Bohm seem to agree on a purely deterministic universe: if you take into account all the minute events and their actors, all the little incidences and coincidences could be explained away. Of course the question arises: how to do it? How to track every piece of the puzzle involve in the production of an event, coincidence, accident? And what of the random nature of quantum phenomena itself? Even entanglements at the quantum level could be cut and dissociated away.

WAVE OF THE HAND TAKE:

The belief that nature (or some creator) is in any way concerned with human life is perhaps mankind’s greatest delusion.

Apart from a thin film of life at the very surface of the Earth, an occasional intrepid spacecraft, and some radio static, our impact on the universe is nil. It knows nothing of us.

NEW SURGERY CAN RESTORE SOME LEGALLY BLIND PEOPLE TO 20/20 VISION

attachment.php

  • Researchers removed the jellylike tissue behind the lens of the eye and replaced it with a saline solution in 20 patients who had Terson syndrome.
  • One month after the surgery, patients' vision improved to an average of 20/40 from an average of 20/1290 and, within a few months, almost all patients had 20/20 vision.

NEW VISION AFTER TRAUMA
The CDC estimates that in 2010 alone, 2.5 million emergency room visits or deaths were associated with traumatic brain injury in the United States.

This type of injury can cause severe damage to a patient’s vision, and even lead to blindness. Now, though, researchers have discovered that sight can be restored in people who’ve suffered from a traumatic brain injury.

Even more, they were able to restore perfect vision in patients who were legally blind prior to their injury.

A small study conducted by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, the Kresge Eye Institute at Wayne State University in Detroit, and the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute in India was published in the journal Ophthalmology.

The research included 20 patients who had surgery for Terson syndrome, a specific type of hemorrhage caused mostly by traumatic injury, such as vehicular collisions. Some of the patients experienced this hemorrhaging in both eyes, thus allowing for the study of 28 eyes.

The procedure used to restore sight in these patients is known as a vitrectomy. The surgery removes the jellylike tissue behind the lens of the eye and replaces it with a saline solution.

The patients were split into groups who had the surgery within three months of the hemorrhage and those who received it after the three month mark.

Legally Blind to Normal Sight

Just one month after the surgery, patients’ vision improved to an average of 20/40 from an average of 20/1290. Within a few months, almost all patients had 20/20 vision (normal visual acuity).

Researchers noted how the length of time between the injury and the surgery did not factor into how well the patient’s sight was improved.

This is an important development since there are often other factors more closely linked with a patient’s imminent death that must be stabilised prior to any surgery to restore sight can take place.

As Rajendra S. Apte, from Washington University School of Medicine stated "It was important to learn how long we could wait to operate without having a negative effect on vision."

This could have a huge impact on those staggering statistics, offering hope to millions of people each year.

unexpected deaths—by family, friends, people we hardly know—have a nasty way of assaulting our sense of mortality. but is death always warranted human fate? lately tech giants have succeeded getting death certified as a mere disease, which hints that some way of extending human life to perhaps eternity is on the way. but what to think of this immortality...? the following video attempts to answer, but you could add your own thoughts too...

Prehistoric Ghost Shark Older Than Dinosaurs Filmed Alive In Ocean For The First Time

A species of ghost shark, deep-sea creatures that have been swimming in the ocean before the time of the dinosaurs, has been filmed alive.

Ghost sharks, officially called chimaeras, have been living in the deep sea swimming at great depths of about a mile and half below the ocean long before the time of the dinosaurs. These prehistoric marine creatures, however, are rarely seen and scientists know little about them.

Now, the world has a chance to see this rare deep-sea shark as a video of this creature has finally been released by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California nearly six years after it was taken.

Accidental Encounter
The footage, which was published by the National Geographic magazine, is believed to be the first ever video taken of a live pointy-nosed blue chimaera (Hydrolagus trolli), which is often found near New Zealand and Australia, in its natural habitat.

It is the first discovery of the species in the Northern Hemisphere.

Dave Ebert, from MBARI's Pacific Shark Research Center, said that the video was captured out of luck. The footage was captured by a remotely operated vehicle when it was sent for dives in the waters off California and Hawaii.

The geologists who piloted the ROVs were not even looking for sharks, much more the elusive ghost sharks, but one of these rarely seen creatures swum up to the ROV's camera.

"Normally, people probably wouldn't have been looking around in this area, so it's a little bit of dumb luck," Ebert said.

Pointy Nosed Blue Ghost Shark

Researchers believe that the creature was a pointy-nosed blue ghost shark as described by a study published in the journal Marine Biodiversity Records in October 2016. The species is said to possess a large but slender body. Its narrow head evenly tapers to a whiplike tail.

"Hydrolagus trolli is a highly distinctive chimaera species, often identified by a combination of the following characteristics: an even blue-gray to pale blue color, a pointed snout, a dark margin around the orbit with dark shadows along edges of the lateral line, and preopercular canal and oral canals usually sharing a common branch," Amber Reichert, from the Pacific Shark Research Center at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and colleagues described the shark in the study.

Unlike other shark species such as the Great White and hammerheads, ghost sharks do not have hundreds of sharp teeth. The creatures thrive by targeting smaller and bottom-feeding prey, crushing them with the mineral plates that they have.

Pareho tayo ng paniniwala sir ang law of cause and effect.

tingin ko possible parin na law of cause and effect yun,
1. sanggol= syempre di naman magkakaroon ng baby kung hindi nag s*x . Cause= S*x / Effect= Buntis
2. Sadyang pinatay= cause= May atraso / effect= pinatay

tutuloy ko nalang hahaha busy pa

I'm sure di lang ikaw ganyan ang sitwasyon pagdating sa issue ng parents and your position. One thing I learned in the past is that it helps if you don't meet them head on. Daan mo na lang sa light humor. Sometimes we just have to accept that we cannot sway people from their age-old beliefs, no matter if they're our own parents or other members of the family. Yung short phrase, "Live and let live," always comes handy. Simple pero may lalim.... :smoke: :)

You think you know your water...?

attachment.php

One of the most basic things we are taught in school science classes is that water can exist in three different states, either as solid ice, liquid water, or vapour gas. But an international team of scientists have recently found signs that liquid water might actually come in two different states.

Writing in an experimental paper, published in the International Journal of Nanotechnology, the researchers were surprised to find a number of physical properties of water change their behaviour between 50℃ and 60℃. This sign of a potential change to a second liquid state could spark a heated discussion in the scientific community. And, if confirmed, it could have implications for a range of fields, including nanotechnology and biology.

States of matter, also called “phases”, are a key concept in the study of systems made from atoms and molecules. Roughly speaking, a system formed from many molecules can be arranged in a certain number of configurations depending on its total energy. At higher temperatures (and therefore higher energies), the molecules have more possible configurations and so are more disorganised and can move about relatively freely (the gas phase). At lower temperatures, the molecules have a more limited number of configurations and so form a more ordered phase (a liquid). If the temperature goes down further, they arrange themselves in a very specific configuration, producing a solid.

This picture is common for relatively simple molecules such as carbon dioxide or methane, which have three clear, different states (liquid, solid and gas). But for more complex molecules, there is a larger number of possible configurations and this gives rise to more phases. A beautiful illustration of this is the rich behaviour of liquid crystals, which are formed by complex organic molecules and can flow like liquids, but still have a solid-like crystalline structure

Because the phase of a substance is determined by how its molecules are configured, many physical properties of that substance will change abruptly as it goes from one state to another. In the recent paper, the researchers measured several telltale physical properties of water at temperatures between 0℃ and 100℃ under normal atmospheric conditions (meaning the water was a liquid). Surprisingly, they found a kink in properties such as the water’s surface tension and its refractive index (a measure of how light travels through it) at around 50℃.

Hydrogen bonds. Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA

Special structure
How can this be? The structure of a water molecule, H₂O, is very interesting and can be pictured like a sort of arrow tip, with the two hydrogen atoms flanking the oxygen atom at the top. The electrons in the molecule tend to be distributed in a rather asymmetric way, making the oxygen side negatively charged relative to the hydrogen side. This simple structural feature leads to a kind of interaction between water molecules known as hydrogen bonding, in which the opposite charges attract each other.

This gives water properties that, in many cases, break the trends observed for other simple liquids. For example, unlike most other substances, a fixed mass of water takes up more room as a solid (ice) than as a (liquid) because of the way it molecules form a specific regular structure. Another example is the surface tension of liquid water, which is roughly twice that of other non-polar, simpler, liquids.

Water is simple enough, but not too simple. This means that one possibility for explaining the apparent extra phase of water is that it behaves a little bit like a liquid crystal. The hydrogen bonds between molecules keep some order at low temperatures, but eventually could take a second, less-ordered liquid phase at higher temperatures. This could explain the kinks observed by the researchers in their data.

If confirmed, the authors’ findings could have many applications. For example, if changes in the environment (such as temperature) cause changes in a substance’s physical properties, then this can potentially be used for sensing applications. Perhaps more fundamentally, biological systems are mostly made of water. How biological molecules (such as proteins) interact with each other likely depends on the specific manner in which water molecules arrange to form a liquid phase. Understanding how water molecules arrange themselves on average at different temperatures could shed light on the workings of how they interact in biological systems.

The discovery is an exciting opportunity for theorists and experimentalists, and a beautiful example of how even the most familiar substance still has secrets hiding within.
