It’s no wonder with so many people that countless stories were left untold, objects left buried and mysteries left unresolved. And as much as we know of the ancient world, there is still so much more about the distant past that we can not fully comprehend-and perhaps never will.

Illustrations. Scripts. Original artifacts. Sometimes it’s difficult to understand exactly what else could be out there, or even in our own backyards. Some believe that ancient technology is yet to be discovered, or that even whole civilizations remain to be found. And ancient artifacts can sometimes change how we view our history. Let’s look at a few of what our ancestors left behind.

The Turkey’s Göbekli Tepe

In 2008, Klaus Schmidt discovered a site in Turkey which is believed to be mankind’s first temple ever assembled. This massive carved stone structure, known as the Göbekli Tepe, is dated back to 11,000 BCE and predates Stonehenge by 6,000 years. Prior to the advent of metal tools or even pottery the temple was built.

Essentially a set of T-shaped pillars and stone rings, these structures are embellished with crude drawings of different animals including lions and spiders. The site has already provided new information on the evolution of society. But what exactly those drawings mean, and the temple ‘s specific function is still undetermined.

The Cuzco’s Sacsayhuamán Fortress Walls

Outside Cuzco, Peru, you will find a remarkable walled fortress built of perfectly fitted boulders, some of which weigh more than 200 tons. The exact date of construction, known as Saksaywayman, is unknown although the structure is ancient enough to predate the Incas themselves.

While Saksaywayman ‘s function as a fortress and a ceremonial location are well documented, there is still no understanding of the process of how this massive fortification was constructed. The gaps between the rocks are so thin that they won’t even fit a piece of paper between them-engineering that required a huge amount of manpower and technological expertise to assemble.

The Mummified Bog Bodies

Hundreds of unbelievably well-preserved human cadavers have been discovered in Northern European peat bogs since the 18th century. Forensically these bodies were dated as far back as 8,000 BCE. The famous “Tollund Man,” discovered by two Danish farmers in a small town in Denmark in 1950, lived in the 3rd century BCE Pre-Roman Iron Age. He was so well preserved that he used to establish the contents of his stomach when he lived.

Despite the different demographic makeup of these bodies in terms of age, sex, and social standing, their composition contains one mysterious and unexplained commonality. They appear to have been deliberately executed and placed in bogs, with no explanation as to why this disposal method would be used. Researchers speculate they might have been sacrifices or social outcasts.

The Devil’s Bible
Devil_codex_Gigas.jpg

The Codex Gigas, or otherwise called The Devil’s Bible, was written in the thirteenth century by a priest who said he made an arrangement with the Devil in a brief timeframe to finish it. As indicated by the legend the priest was condemned to live walled-up as discipline for breaking his vows. He additionally guaranteed the religious community that on the off chance that they let him live, he would compose a book in a solitary day that would contain all the human information.

Twelve pages of the first original copy are missing, and what they may have contained remains up-to-date mystery-some rumors say those pages contain secret Satanic scripts, perhaps even a method of conjuring up the Devil.

Made in more than 160 animal skins and requiring two individuals to lift it, the Devil’s Bible contains the complete Latin interpretation of the Bible, as well as several other texts, including works by Hippocrates and Cosmas of Prague-not to mention medical formulas, scripts on exorcisms and a large portrayal of the Devil.

Most people are probably aware of crop circles: sprawling, circular patterns that are often created by extraterrestrials in the cornfields of farmers around the globe. Maybe they’re a form of communication, possibly a warning. But perhaps the most fascinating of such types of symbols, dubbed geoglyphs, are the Nazca Lines found across southern Peru ‘s dry, desert plains.

There are more than 100 of these enormous glyphs, portraying everything from basic lines to perplexing structures of monkeys, people, fish, panthers, and feathered creatures, said to be made by the Nazca culture between 500 BCE and 500 CE. The genuine reason for these glyphs is obscure however the images are conspicuous. Some state the lines were made as a method of offering headings to approaching mariners.

Japan’s Underwater Ruin

Submerged just off the shoreline of Yonaguni Jima is Japan’s own Atlantis, a rambling submerged town thought to be at any rate 5,000 years of age. The city was initially thought to be simply an unusual arrangement of regular stone developments previously found by a jumper in 1995, all of which bafflingly highlighted impeccable right edges and straight lines. From an enormous stone entryway to cut flights of stairs and roads to vaulting pinnacles, later hunts uncovered everything.

Believed to be the Jomon people ‘s former city, experts theorize that the city wasn’t exactly like the fabulous Atlantis “falling” into the sea, but rather submerged as sea levels rose over thousands of years. As researchers continue to research the underwater site, many believe that this particular site could hold key information for other possible underwater cities around the world.
