BlackBerry MEP Reader - Use the BlackBerry MEP reader to read the IMEI number and MEP version directly from your BlackBerry phone. When the IMEI and MEP type is read directly from the phone there is no possible way to get incorrect information or an incorrect code. Once you have read your phone with the MEP reader please go to this thread.

BlackBerry MEP Reader Instructions:

1. Make sure that your BlackBerry drivers are installed on your computer. You can check by going to your device manager. In your device manager you will see 2 ports that say Rim Virtual Serial Port or a similar name. If you do not see these ports then your drivers are not installed and need to be installed.

Ports.jpg

If your drivers are not installed please click here to download and install them.

2. Make sure your firewall and virus protection software is disabled until you read your phone with the MEP reader. Since the MEP reader is an exe file some anti-virus software detects it as a possible threat. It is what is called a "false positive". This means that your anti-virus software has never seen this file before so it assumes it is the closest similar type of file it has discovered in the past that contained a virus. We can assure you that the BlackBerry reader does not contain a virus, but if your anti-virus software assumes it does, it will get blocked or deleted and it will not work to read your phone.

3. Download BlackBerry MEP Reader:
Click Here to download the BlackBerry MEP Reader for Windows
Click Here to download the BlackBerry MEP Reader for MAC

4. DO NOT PLUG IN PHONE YET!
Run BBReader.exe. Don't worry if you get a message like this:

BBReaderWarning.jpg

This program does not contain a virus or malware. It is safe to run on your computer. Click OK.

BBReaderRun.jpg

Click Run

5. BEFORE you plug in phone make sure there are no BlackBerry programs running on your computer like BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Still DO NOT plug in phone, but first click "Read phone"

BBMEPReader.jpg

6. When it says "Waiting for blackberry phone" then make sure the phone is on and plug it in.

7. Copy and post the IMEI and MEP ID to this thread

Troubleshooting: If you cannot get the BlackBerry MEP reader to begin reading your phone make sure that your anti-virus software and firewall is off. Make sure that there are no other programs currently accessing the BlackBerry device such as BlackBerry Desktop Manager. If BlackBerry Desktop Manager or any other BlackBerry programs are running make sure they are off and try again. If it still doesn't work try removing the battery and putting the battery back in - then turn the phone back on and plug in again. Make sure your USB cable is good. Try a different USB cable if you have one. Make sure the port where the cable plugs into does not have dust, grease, or dirt built up in it. Carefully clean it out if it does.

Before entering any codes in to the phone please turn off all Connections:

Scroll and select Manage Connections.
Select Turn All Connections OFF
Press Escape/Return to go back to the Home Screen
Check first if your IMEI is the same as what you have provided by typing *#06#
Follow the instuctions to unlock your phone
Once unlocked Turn All Connections ON

Unlocking intructions (2 methods):

METHOD 1:
1. Insert a SIM card from a DIFFERENT carrier (a non-accepted SIM card). The phone will ask for the MEP2 NETWORK UNLOCK CODE. Enter the 8 or 16 digit unlock code that is provided to you. If you entered the code correctly you will be sent to the homescreen.

*****If you get a "code error" STOP, DO NOT Continue*****

2) Once unlocked Turn All Connections ON.
3) Please reset your phone. You can do this in two ways: 1) remove the battery while the phone is on and re-insert the battery. OR 2) You can press and hold ALT+RIGHT SHIFT+Backspace/Delete in that order.

Please note: If you plan on using your Blackberry with another carrier/network, please make sure your phone is compatible with the carrier/network you wish to transfer to. Please call the carrier or visit their website to find this information.

METHOD 2 (Note: No SIM is needed to unlock the phone.):
1) Go to Options
2) Go to Device
3) Go to Advanced System Settings
4) Go to SIM Card
5) Type "mepd" or HOLD ALT and Type "mepd" (please note that you will not see what you type on the screen). A new menu should drop down. If your phone is locked you will see "Active" or "Enabled" beside "Network".
6) HOLD ALT and Type: "mepe" OR for touchscreen only Blackberrys press "&%123" once, press and HOLD "&%123", type "mep", release the "&%123" key and type "2" (Please note that you will NOT see what you type on the screen). Note: On the right hand side of the prompt you will see "X left", where X is the number of tries you have left to enter the code. NEVER let this number go below 4. Once you get to 0 your phone will be hard-locked.
7) It will ask you for the unlock code. Enter the 8 or 16 digit unlock code is provided and then press enter to confirm (only enter the unlock code once!!!!). If you entered the code correctly you will be sent to the homescreen. Your phone is now unlocked!

*****If you get a "code error" STOP, DO NOT Continue.*****

8) Once unlocked Turn All Connections ON.
9) Please reset your phone. You can do this in two ways:
a) remove the battery while the phone is on, insert SIM as desired and re-insert the battery. OR
b) You can press and hold ALT+RIGHT SHIFT+Backspace/Delete in that order.

How do I determine if my BlackBerry is “unlocked”?

To determine if your BlackBerry is “unlocked” for use on carriers other than for which it is branded:
1. On your BlackBerry, go to Options > Advanced Options > Sim Card.
2. At that screen type MEPD (see note below) on your keyboard. A new menu will pop up.

If your BlackBerry has a SureType keyboard (71xx and 81xx devices) you will need to double-tap the P, so the actual keys entered become M E P P D.
3. Look for Network in the list.
4. If your device is “unlocked”, it should say Disabled or Inactive. If it says Active, it’s still locked to that carrier.
