FAQ
1. What is DSL?
DSL refers to the technology used between a customer's premises and the telephone company, enabling more bandwidth over the already installed copper cabling than users have traditionally had.
2. How does DSL work?
DSL utilizes more of the bandwidth on copper phone lines than what is currently used for plain old telephone service. By utilizing frequencies above the telephone bandwidth, DSL can encode more data to achieve higher data rates than would otherwise be possible in the restricted frequency range of a POTS network. In order to utilize the frequencies above the voice audio spectrum, DSL equipment must be installed on both ends and the copper wire in between must be able to sustain the higher frequencies for the entire route. This means that bandwidth limiting devices such as loading coils must be removed or avoided.
3. What are the types DSL bayanDSL Offers?
There are several variations on DSL technology. In fact, there are so many that you will often see the term xDSL, where x is a variable, for Bayan we offer the following DSL types:
Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) - It is called "asymmetric" because the download speed is greater than the upload speed. ADSL works this way because most Internet users look at, or download, much more information than they send, or upload.
Symmetric DSL (SDSL) - This version receives and sends data at the same speed.
4. What are Bayan’s DSL packages?
bayanDSL
For home
Designed for single PC/workstation usage
Comes with free e-mail address and dynamic IP address
5. What is the difference between Shared and Dedicated DSL Service?
Shared DSL Services are shared bandwidths where a single Internet connection can be shared the number of subscribers dimensioned for each products. In effect, the throughput that can be achieved at any one time will depend on whatever bandwidth is available at the time. Hence, can be considered as a "Zero CIR (Committed Information Rate) service".
Dedicated DSL Services offer dedicated bandwidths for corporate customers with stringent Internet requirements. Service levels for this type of connection are guaranteed, that is, there is a minimum guaranteed Internet throughput that can be expected for a DSL dedicated connection.
6. What’s the advantage of using DSL instead of Frame Relay and Leased line to deliver internet service?
DSL is much faster and more inexpensive than either Frame Relay or Leased Line technologies and is highly suited to Internet service provisioning.
7. So what are the selling points of bayanDSL?
BayanDSL offers the best price-to-performance ratio in the market today. It is generally more inexpensive than comparable offerings from competitors. We have a reputation of immediate restoration of outages and excellent customer service.
8. I already have a Direct Dial-Up Internet account.
For almost the same price definitely at better performance. No busy signals, no dialing, and you’re always connected.
9. How come our competitor gives the same Bandwidth speed for their DSL Service at cheaper rates?
You have to realize that line speed and Internet throughput are two different things. Line speed is just the speed of the line, but the real data you get from the internet is the throughput. We at Bayan have standards with regard to throughput even for our Business DSL connections
10. Do all customers qualify for DSL service?
Customers must be within 3km-5.5km from their OPAC or distribution office where a DSLAM has been installed. Please note that the measurement from the OPAC or distribution office to the customer premise is the length of the telephone line facility, not street miles or air miles
11. What is a dynamic IP address?
IP stands for "Internet Protocol." An IP address enables a computer to be identified on the Internet while the user is on-line. A dynamic IP address is one that is temporarily assigned to a user from a pool of IP addresses from a centrally administered server. The user has a different IP address each time s/he logs onto the Internet.
12. What is a static IP address?
This is an IP address that is the same every time a user logs on to the Internet. So it enables a user to "host" a website or some other type of server connection (for example, an email server), since other Internet users will always know the identity of the hosting computer and will be able to connect to it.
13. How does DSL work on my existing phone line?
DSL is really a feature added to your existing phone line. The function of the DSL splitter is to handle the voice calls and route the data off separately to your computer.
14. How do I network two PC's together on a DSL line?
We recommend that you contact a LAN consultant to help with this set-up for your small business or home.
What is the policy on Internet Bandwidth Usage?
1. What is the monthly bandwidth limit per subscriber?
>The limit per subscriber ay any given month must not exceed 100 gigabytes.
2.Why is there a bandwidth limit?
>bayanDSL must ensure the quality of service of all subscribers within a vicinity. If a single subscriber exceeds the allowable bandwidth limit at 100 gigabytes per month, then this directly affect other subscribers within your vicinity.
3.What are my options? What if I need a higher bandwidth plan?
>To upgrade your bayanDSL residential plan, please call 449-2000.
>To convert to a corporate plan, please call 449-9999.
4.How will I know if I have exceeded my limit?
>You can monitor your bandwidth usage at " www.bayan.com.ph/aup/usage " using your existing bayanDSL username and password.
