Japeth Aguilar to Ginebra, Jay Washington to GlobalPort deals approved by PBA

The PBA on Tuesday approved separate deals that sent high-flying forwards Japeth Aguilar and Jay Washington to new teams.

GlobalPort completed a trade to send Aguilar to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in exchange for rookie center Yousef Taha and a first round pick in 2013.

The Gin Kings sent Elmer Espiritu to Barako Bull for the first round pick, originally from Talk ‘N Text, to send to GlobalPort.

The Batang Pier also acquired Jay Washington from Petron in exchange for rookie forward Jason Deutchmann and second round picks in 2016 and 2017.

In an earlier interview, GlobalPort team owner Mikee Romero confirmed the offers.

“There are offers. I will always look at what’s best for the team,” he said.

Trade Analysis: JWash to GlobalPort, Japeth to Ginebra in 4-team, 8-player deal

How quickly the blowing and whistling of trade winds turn into an actual typhoon of a deal. It seems like the trade fever that was created by a three-team tradeyesterday between Meralco, Barako Bull, and Talk ‘N Text has caught off with four more teams — a virtual 12-player deal including three future draft picks. The mega deal was headlined by Jay Wash joining forces with three more elite scorers inGlobalPort, and by Ginebra finally getting a shallowly-excitable “big” man in Japeth Aguilar. Here’s what went down:

WINNERS

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Japeth Aguilar

If you can cop a legit 6-9 power forward that can consistently give you around 11 points, 7 boards, and 2 swats a night (his stat line in the Comm’s Cup) while only giving away two projects that barely crackyour rotation, then you win. It’s like exchanging two pairs of generic BALL’N kicks for aNikeHyperDunk. With Japeth Aguilar, Ginebra finally gets a true RIM PROTECTUHHH!, a guy that has an above average stroke from midrange and someone who can be L.A. Tenorio’s new pick-and-popplaymate. The former Blue Eagle, Hilltopper, Whopper, Texter, Batang Pier, will give BGSM’s pick-and-roll-happy offense a new dimension. Plus, let’s not forget Japeth’s ability to rile up the crowdwith his ability to abuse the rim.

Petron Blaze Boosters

For Petron, this is addition by subtraction. They finally got to unload a player that needs a portion of the ball, and someone Arwind Santos looks awkward with, like J-Wash is that random guy he sat with in “Table 36″ at his friend’swedding reception. Yeay! More touches for June Mar…and Arwind…and Marcio…and Chris…and Alex…and Brian (Faundo). On top of that, they get an ultimately benchable guy — because he won’t have the balls to complain about PT — in Jason “Imma hang at the wings and shoot3′s like Chris Bosh” Deutchman. Plus, they get two second round picks in 2016 and 2017 that they can magically turn into a number one overall pick! Wuhooo!

Jay Washington

J-Wash should pretty much feel like he just got out of jail. Even though it might be fool’s gold that he unshackles himself from the Petron Superstar Doghouse and joins three ball-dominant players inGlobal Port, the bottom line is that he will get more PT and a bigger role.

NOT A WINNER, NOT A LOSER, STEADY LANG

Global PortBatang Pier

Mikee Romero and his crew get a once upon a time top five talent inthe PBA in exchange for a “big” man that seems more excited withdunks than W’s. If Japeth stays that way and J-Wash rediscovers his 20-10 self, then they win big time. But if Japeth realizes his outrageous potential, then they lose.I’m still on the fence with this move. J-Wash will stretch the floormore for Sol, Gary, and Willie compared to Japeth, whileGlobal Portwill miss Japeth’s rim protecting ability. So I really don’t know. But if the Batang Pier have decided to be a pedal-to-the-metal, run-and-gun team, then I think J-Wash should find a home. Before I forget, they also got Yousef Taha; someone who induces “I have absolutely no idea what to get from this guy” kind of reactions from both coaches and fans.

Elmer Espiritu

Elmer Espiritu enrolls in Barako Bull’s “We will improve you as abasketballplayer, and most probably send you to a new team after a conference” farm program.

BIGGEST LOSERS

Barako Bull Energy Cola and their fans — if they have any.If your team has fans, then you’re losing them trade after trade. If you want fans, build around a core and maintain that core for the longhaul. That will give you identity and character that fans will associate with. But if you keep trading young and exciting players like Maliksi, Ababou, and Urbiztondo, then you don’t deserve fans.

Re: -=PBA [Official Thread] =- 38th Season {Commissioner's Cup}

Re: -=PBA [Official Thread] =- 38th Season {Commissioner's Cup}

injured ata si Dillinger eh naaksidente ata

Re: -=PBA [Official Thread] =- 38th Season {Commissioner's Cup}

Naalala ko pa nung naglalaro pa siya for Air21(correct me if im wrong).

GlobalPort hopes to use pick acquired from Japeth Aguilar trade to take small forward

GlobalPort finally acquired a pick in the upcoming PBA draft after trading high-flying Japeth Aguilar to Ginebra.

In return, the Batang Pier received rookie center Yousef Taha and a first round pick that originally belongs to Talk ‘N Text.

The draft pick acquired by the Batang Pier isn’t expected to be a top selection, given the record of Talk ‘N Text this season. But Baculi still hopes the team could get a quality player.

And while the draft is months away, GlobalPort coach Junel Baculi already has an idea of what his team needs from the draft.

“It is too early considering we have not seen the list yet, but we need a versatile No.3 guy who can complement Sol (Mercado), Gary (David), Willie (Miller) and JWash (Jay Washington). Someone who’s a hard-nosed defender as well,” wrote Baculi in a text message to InterAKTV.

GlobalPort’s own first round pick is no longer with the team, having been traded away by its predecessor Powerade franchise. In 2011, the Tigers traded that pick to the Air 21 Express in exchange for center JR Quinahan.

Air 21 was subsequently renamed Barako Bull, and the Energy Colas traded that pick earlier this season for point guard Josh Urbiztondo.

Washington’s star

With a pair of trades completed earlier this week, Baculi said that the team was able to take care of pressing needs in the frontcourt.

The team received star forward Jay Washington from Petron. Baculi is hoping that a new environment would result in a rejuvenation of the two-time Best Player of the Conference winner, who struggled in a reduced role for the Boosters this season.

“Will Jay Washington’s star shine with GlobalPort? I believe so,” said Baculi. “He can take over a game if he puts his mind into it. But he needs to adjust to GlobalPort’s system the soonest.”

Baculi expects valuable contributions from his two new big guys on the squad.

“We got two bigs who can both operate down low. Yousef will give us the energy we need. JWash also has the range from the outside plus the experience. It will also give us the weapon that we need to enhance our arsenal,” added Baculi.

Lahing Ginebra: Japeth Aguilar, Billy Mamaril form second-generation Gin Kings front line

There have been several pairs of fathers and sons who have played in the PBA. The list is quite extensive: Freddie and Jason Webb, Sonny and Junjun Cabatu, Freddie and Paolo Hubalde, Elmer and Raphy Reyes, Jess Migalbin and Richard Yee, Jun and Addy Papa, and of course, Robert Jaworski, Sr. and Jr.

In 1995, Ginebra San Miguel, with playing coach Jaworski, Sr. at the helm, drafted his eldest son and namesake, Robert, Jr. or Dodot, in the second round of the rookie draft. Dodot didn’t get to play the entire 1995 season but suited up for the team starting in the 1996 season. And while he got to play two years for the franchise, we weren’t able to witness father and son play together inside the court. Yet, the feat was historic since this was the only time in league history when father and son were part of a common roster. It may not happen again in the future.

Fast forward 18 years later and the franchise has put itself in history books once more. When Japeth Aguilar was traded to Ginebra from GlobalPort, he teams up with fellow second-generation player Billy Mamaril for the first time in their careers.

Curiously, 24 years ago, Japeth’s father, Peter was drafted in the first round of the rookie draft by Jaworski, Sr. to play for the team then known Anejo Rum 65. As such, he found himself in the company of Billy’s dad, Romy, then the lanky starting center for the 65ers. And like their sons, Romy played center while Peter dabbled at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions.

The fathers got to play for Anejo in seasons 1989 and 1990 before being shipped to different teams. The sons get to replicate their fathers’ roles in the same team where their fathers teamed up more than two decades ago.

And if Ginebra considers re-signing Paolo Hubalde after the ABL season, then that will be three second generation players playing for one franchise — in the same way their fathers played together once upon a time for the same team from 1989 to 1990.

Rajko Toroman happy with new Barako Bull players from trades

Barako Bull had a quietly busy past couple of days, having been involved in separate deals.

On Monday, the Energy Colas acquired hotshot guard Ronjay Buenafe and second-year forward Gilbert Bulawan from Meralco in a three-way transaction that saw them send Sean Anthony to Talk ‘N Text and Don Allado to the Bolts.

A day later, Barako Bull acquired athletic forward Elmer Espiritu from Barangay Ginebra San Miguel for a 2013 first round draft pick originally belonging to Talk ‘N Text.

Barako Bull consultant Rajko Toroman was happy with the team’s haul.

“We need a good shooter and I think that Buenafe is a good option. On the other side, we lost Anthony, but we signed [Keith] Jensen, who is a similar type of player,” said Toroman.

The rookie Jensen was acquired from Ginebra prior to the end of the Commissioner’s Cup in a trade that involved Josh Urbiztondo.

Espiritu, meanwhile, is expected to help address the team’s problems off the boards.

“Espiritu is athletic and a good rebounder and can cover the No. 3 and No. 4 positions,” added Toroman. “We had problems with rebounding so I think we can improve in this part of our game.”

In adding these young players, Toroman thinks they’ve made a good step toward rebuilding for the future.

“We also have three more first round picks [in the upcoming draft] and [we] have [the] possibility to compose the team with new players,” he added.

SMC coaching rigidon

As rumors of Racela's impending exit grew louder, there had been talk that Cone may end up coaching SMC's flagship franchise, Petron, with newly minted ABL champion coach Leo Austria moving from San Miguel to San Mig and Abanilla taking over the Beermen coaching job.

Re: -=PBA [Official Thread] =- 38th Season {Commissioner's Cup}

Ginebra star Tenorio wastes no time showing new teammate Aguilar the ropes

tenorioagu.jpg

LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar may soon be connecting with those dazzling lob plays at Ginebra, but for now Tenorio is the teacher and Aguilar the student.

On the day the trade went down making the athletic Aguilar the latest member of Ginebra, Tenorio took his new teammate aside during Gilas Pilipinas' training camp in Lithuania and wasted no time showing him the ropes.

“Nabanggit niya nga sa akin 'yung tungkol sa trade. Kaya sinabi niya na rin sa akin what to expect sa ensayo saka paano sila nagpa-practice,” Aguilar told Spin.ph shortly after Gilas' arrival on Tuesday from Lithuania.

Tenorio said he is happy to see Aguilar join Ginebra, in fulfillment of his dad's dream. Peter Aguilar suited up for the league’s most popular ball club under then playing-coach Sonny Jaworski.

“Sinasama-sama ko na siya saka tinuturuan ko na din siya,” Tenorio said. "Sa Ginebra mabibigyan kasi siya ng break."

Aguilar admitted the trade that saw him go to the Kings in exchange for rookie Yousif Taha and a first-round draft pick surprised him since he has been working double time preparing for the PBA Governors Cup in the hope of atoning for Globalport's poor showing in the first two conferences.

“Although looking forward ako to play for Globalport since masama nga pinakita namin last conference, nagpe-prepare na ako. Pero nangyari na yung trade so kailangan ko na lang uli mag-adjust kasi part talaga ng pagiging professional yung ma-trade,” said Aguilar.

On the other hand, Tenorio sees a lot of upside in the 26-year-old Aguilar, especially coming after Ginebra suffered a 0-3 Finals loss to Commissioner’s Cup champion Alaska Aces.

“I think yung height niya malaking bagay sa team kasi may ta-tao na sa gitna, saka shot-blocking niya so makaka-intimidate din siya,” said Tenorio.

Asi-Japeth tandem will make Ginebra a formidable force, say rival coaches

japethasi.jpg

AN Asi Taulava and Japeth Aguilar frontcourt alliance will definitely make Barangay Ginebra a force to reckon with if and when the most popular team in the PBA can strike a deal for the reigning Asean Basketball League MVP.

Rival coaches are understandably not looking forward to the prospect of seeing the two 6-foot-9 big men teaming up for the Kings, who they believe would be hard to beat if that happens.

Coach Yeng Guiao of defending Governors Cup champion Rain or Shine stressed acquiring Aguilar alone has already bolstered the inside game of the Kings.

What more if the veteran Taulava is added to the mix.

“Yun lang may Japeth Aguilar ka na, malaking bagay na yun. Kung makukuha pa nila si Asi, mas malaking bagay `yun,” said the newly-elected congressman of Pampanga’s first district.

One advantage of such a combination is that the two can be played at the same time owing to Aguilar's preference playing at big forward, Guiao said.

“Yung Asi and Japeth puwede mo kasing palaruin ng sabay `yun. Imagine mo `yun, tapos may import pa sila. So size-wise, walang tatalo sa kanila pag nagkaganoon,” he added.

Guiao believes Ginebra management is dead-bent on forming a twin-tower combination up front, owing to persistent reports about the Kings’ interest in signing up the 40-year-old Taulava, whose playing rights in the PBA still belongs to Meralco.

“I think `yung ang objective nila, parang overkill sa big man post. Pero kailangan mo talaga na magkaroon ka ng ganung intimidating factor,” said Guiao.

“Ang gandang kumbinasyon nun.”

The outspoken mentor also didn’t hide his admiration for the vintage performances of Taulava in the recent ABL season that saw him steer the Beermen to their first-ever league championship following a three-game sweep of Indonesia in the Finals.

Air21 coach Franz Pumaren is likewise amazed with how the Kings are trying to rebuild their frontline for the season-ending conference.

“Of course, they will have the ceiling. Isang quick big guy and a veteran slotman,” said Pumaren.

The multi-titled collegiate coach said acquiring Taulava would leave Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua with a "happy problem" in his hands.

“Ang lalaki ng Ginebra nun, kaso madi-displace na naman `yung Kerby (Raymundo) at Billy Mamaril,” he said.

“Remember Ginebra also has Rico Maierhofer, Rudy Hatfield, and Willie Wilson. Souped-up team na talaga ang Kings if that happens.

“It will be a happy problem for coach Al. Ang isa pang maganda run, ma-tsa-challenge `yung ibang big men to step up.”

No one from Petron has talked to me about any coaching change, says Racela

olsenrowo.jpg

OLSEN Racela said that as far as he’s concerned, he is still the head coach of the Petron Blaze Boosters.

Reacting to a Spin.ph report, Racela said no one from San Miguel Corp. management has informed him of any plan to name Gee Abanilla as Petron coach in his place and American Todd Purves as team consultant.

Neither has anyone informed him of reported plans to transfer him to San Mig Coffee to serve as one of Tim Cone’s assistant coaches, the longtime San Miguel Beer star added.

“Wala, no one has talked to me about that (trade),” Racela said on Tuesday. “As far as I know, I’m still the head coach of Petron.”

The 42-year-old Racela said he even presided over the team’s first practice on Monday morning as part of the Boosters’ early preparation for the season-ending Governors Cup.

“We had our first practice together nung Monday after the long break. So we did more of conditioning, skills work and weights training,” he added.

Regardless of the reports, Racela said his focus is on whipping his team back to shape, getting an import that best fits the team’s local talent and hopefully, finish the Governors Cup with a championship after frustrating stints in the first two conferences this season.

“Siyempre, kami yung isa sa mga naunang natanggal (sa Commissioner's Cup), kaya bumalik kami ng maaga sa practice. Now, my focus is to get the best import available for our team based on our need,” he said.

Multiple sources told Spin.ph on Monday that Abanilla, recently removed as head coach of La Salle, is set to take over from Racela in a coaching shuffle that would also see Purves come in as a consultant similar to the set-up Racela had with Rajko Toroman in the Philippine Cup.

Purves led the Warriors to the Asean Basketball League title last year, but could only lead Indonesia to a runner-up finish this year after being swept by the San Miguel Beermen in the Finals.

Guiao eyes upgrade for 'Extra Rice' frontline with two prized draft picks

RAIN or Shine is one of the shortest teams in the pro league with an average height of 6-1 and a frontline that relies mostly on wide-bodied but undersized centers JR Quinahan and Beau Belga.Coach Yeng Guiao, though, hopes help will be on the way soon.Holding two first-round picks in the next PBA rookie draft, Guiao hopes to get a shot at drafting either seven-footer Greg Slaughter or Ian Sangalang to give his 'Extra Rice Inc.' frontline pair the needed upgrade.“Hindi na kami papasok sa trade para kumuha ng big man. Baka sakali sa draft na lang kami kukuhang sentro,” said Guiao, hoping one of the two prized picks in Rain or Shine's possession will land in the draft lottery.Of the two, it is Barako Bull's pick, which the Painters acquired in a previous trade, that has a big chance of turning into gold with the Energy Cola's lackluster showing so far this season.Rain or Shine's other pick is its own.Another intriguing pick, that of Globalport, is now owned by San Mig Coffee.Guiao hinted that if the chance presents itself, he would love to have either Slaughter or Sangalang.“Malaking chance na ma-address namin this coming draft ang pagkukulang namin sa big man. Yeswe are looking at Slaughter and Sangalang,” said Guiao.“Hopefully ito na talaga ang chancenamin na makakuha (ng big man),” added the outspoken coach.Team co-owner Raymund Yu is alsooptimistic the Elasto Painters will get lucky in the draft.“Sana malagay kami dun (sa Top 2),ilang beses na nga naming pinag-uusapan yan. Kasi Slaughter at Sangalang talaga ang pagpipilian namin,” said Yu.Yu, however, believes the team's plans are bound to change if Bobby Parks, Jr. makes himself available for drafting.“Kung magpapa-draft na rin si Bobby Ray Parks, Jr, maiiba ang direksyon namin,” he said. “Kasi kahit hindi namin kailangan yun, atmay chance kami to tab him, siya ang kukunin namin."Tapos bahala na. Iba kasi ang talent nun eh,” Yu added.

Paras, Magsanoc lead Hall of Fame nominees

WO-time MVP winner Benjie Paras, Shell teammates Ronnie Magsanoc and Arnie Tuadles and coach Ed Ocampo lead nine personalities nominated for enshrinement into the 2013 PBA Hall of Fame class.

Pioneer PBA player Lim Eng Beng, ex-Alaska resident import Sean Chambers, longtime league official Elmer Yanga, referee Igmidio Cahanding, and media man Fred Luarca also passed the thorough nomination procedure, thus, becoming Hall of Fame candidates.

The fifth PBA Hall of Fame ceremony will be held during the opening of the 2013-14 PBA season or in a separate event prior to the opening.

PBA officials Rickie Santos and Willie Marcial, sports columnists Joaquin Henson and Dennis Principe, PBA Press Corps president Musong Castillo, TV5’s Magsanoc and Paras, representing the players’ group, composed the selection/nomination committee whose choices are to go through screening by the Honors Committee.

Henson, serving as chair of the selection/nomination group, is convinced, though, that they came up with a “strong consensus” list of nominees.

“The players are cream of the crop. It’s a very strong consensus,” Henson said.

Thirty-six individuals have been previously inducted into the Hall of Fame, led by initial honorees Robert Jaworski, Ramon Fernandez, Atoy Co, Philip Cezar, Bogs Adornado, Francis Arnaiz, Baby Dalupan, Leo Prieto, Emerson Coseteng, Rudy Salud, Danny Floro, and Joe Cantada.

Two years after the 2005 launch, Abet Guidaben, Manny Paner, Danny Florencio, Norman Black, Ron Jacobs, Domingo Itchon, Danding Cojuangco, Dante Silverio, Tony Siddayao, and Pinggoy Pengson made the next batch inducted into the “Hall.”

Then came the group of Bobby Parks, Allan Caidic, Samboy Lim, Hector Calma, Ricky Brown, Honeyboy Palanca, and Jun Bernardino in 2009, and the batch of Alvin Patrimonio, Billy Ray Bates, Freddie Hubalde, Tommy Manotoc, Tito Eduque, Mariano Yenko, and Bobong Velez in 2011.

Paras is easily the top choice to lead the next batch of inductees with his fabled career sparked by his record Rookie of the Year/MVP citation in 1989.

He would win another MVP award in 1999, topping four championships delivered to the Shell franchise and ensuring future Hall of Fame induction.

In the secret balloting among members of the selection committee (making six votes each), Paras got the most number of votes with seven, followed by Magsanoc and Chambers with six each and Tuadles and Beng with five apiece.

Before going through the balloting, the committee made an initial elimination process, trimming down an original list of 34 players to 21 in an open discussion.

Then the group nominated a coach, a team manager, a league official, and a media personality, and thus a total of 44 individuals were considered in the process.

In the secret balloting, getting at least one vote each were Byron Snake Jones, Jerry Codinera, Bernie Fabiosa, Ato Agustin, Jojo Lastimosa, Abe King, and Padim Israel.
