Change coming? Petron coach Olsen Racela meets with San Miguel Corporation officials

Petron Blaze coach Olsen Racela met with San Miguel Corporation basketball officials on Tuesday amid rumors that a coaching change is in the offing for the Boosters.

Racela told InterAKTV about the meeting in a text message on Tuesday morning. “Don’t really know what the meeting is about. Pinatawag lang kami,” he said.

After the meeting, Racela refused further comment on the matter, instead referring queries to Robert Non, who heads the conglomerate’s basketball operations group.

“Boss Robert will come out with a statement,” said Racela.

Multiple calls and messages to Non went unanswered. Another SMC official, Noli Eala, also refused to comment on what transpired during the meeting.

“Please call Robert,” Eala said.

Racela took over the coaching chores of Petron before the start of the season after two years as an assistant to Ato Agustin. Before retiring, he spent 14 seasons as point guard for the franchise then known as the San Miguel Beermen.

Petron signs D-League wingman Elijah Millsap as import for Governors’ Cup

The Petron Blaze Boosters have signed Elijah Millsap of the NBA D-League’s LA D-Fenders to reinforce the team for the PBA Governors’ Cup.

San Miguel executive Noli Eala confirmed the news to InterAKTV on Saturday.

“He will be Petron’s import. He will be here after the NBA Summer League, so around July 25,” wrote Eala in a text message.

Millsap, listed 6-foot-6 in the D-League, has career averages of 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds in 44 games with the D-Fenders. He is the younger brother of Paul Millsap, a power forward for the Utah Jazz in the NBA.

Petron coach Olsen Racela said the team kept Millsap’s name secret while negotiating with him.

“Lumalabas sa mga papers and ibang media outlets yung name ni (Othyus) Jeffers, but we were keeping in contact with Millsap,” Racela said in a telephone interview. “That’s the reason why hindi namin masabi kasi inaayos pa namin yung contract.”

Jeffers is an NBA veteran, who had stints with the Utah Jazz, the San Antonio Spurs and the Washington Wizards.

Racela said he and Eala were in constant communication regarding the import choice.

“We decided to get Millsap because of his versatility,” added Racela. “He can play the wing and power forward positions and he plays at both ends of the court. The reason why we got a versatile import is to give us an opportunity to fill the void left by Jay Washington. Millsap and Arwind (Santos) can alternately play the power forward spot.”

Globalport star Sol Mercado faces long layoff due to tear on right shoulder

JUST when Globalport looked ready to turn its maiden PBA season around, another problem confronts the team.

The Batang Pier's superstar guard Solomon Mercado faces the prospect of being sidelined for up to four to six months after a shoulder specialist discovered a tear on the labrum on his right shoulder.

“The doctor told me I have a tear on my shoulder. Rehab isn’t gonna fix the tear, I really have to undergo surgery,” said Mercado after seeing the result of his check-up with Dr. Raymond Nunez at the University of Santo Tomas hospital.

The high scoring 6-1 guard had missed Globalport’s last three games in the Commissioner’s Cup because of the same injury. The first two doctors who looked at the injury advised only rehabilitation and rest, Mercado said.

If he opts for surgery now, The Fil-foreigner will not only be done for the season but may also miss the first few months of the following campaign.

No wonder he's frustrated.

“I’m really frustrated, I’ll miss pretty much the next conference. I wish I should have discovered this long before and underwent surgery right away. I would have been ready next month already,” he said.

“I got it checked by many doctors, they wanted me to rest it so it gets better. That’s what I did,” he added.

The shoulder tear was discovered after Mercado returned to Globalport practice on Monday morning.

“I got a good practice, I didn’t feel too bad. That’s why when I saw the shoulder specialist today, I was totally upset,” said the 29-year-old former Biola University standout, who averaged 13.18 points, 8.27 assists, 3.55 rebounds and 1 steal per game in the last Commissioner's Cup.

Mercado still plans to attend the Batang Pier’s practice on Tuesday, but bared that he will now discuss the matter with coach Junel Baculi and team management.

The Globalport guard said he can probably play through the injury for the rest of the season, but risks chronic problem in the long term.

Mercado said he is “trying to stay positive and optimistic about it, hopefully I don’t have a surgery. But I have a tear on my shoulder so the only way to fix that is through an operation."

“I am looking at the longevity of my career, I could probably play on it this conference… But it might become a chronic problem.”

Alaska to keep coaching staff, team intact with round of contract extensions

Alaska made sure it will keep its team intact from top to bottom.

The Aces management made sure about that as they gave the members of the coaching staff additional two year contract extensions.

That means no one from Louie Alas, Alex Compton and Topex Robinson will be going anywhere as they have all agreed in principle to stay with the Aces and help out head coach Luigi Trillo.

“We had a meeting of the minds today (Monday). All the members of the coaching staff were there when we met with Boss Fred (Uytengsu), general manager Joaqui Trillo, and team manager Dickie Bachman,” Trillo said in a telephone interview with InterAKTV. “They have agreed verbally and Mr. Uytengsu will finish the details once we come back from our trip from the United States.”

According to Trillo, Uytengsu will talk to him separately, but the terms of the length of the contract would be the same as the other members of the coaching staff.

“I only have four conferences left. We have discussed my assistants. Mr. Uytengsu will go through the numbers and decide on everything when we get back from our reward trip for winning the championship,” added Trillo.

This means that the coaching staff will be handling the squad for three years and one conference.

Aside from the coaching staff, the Aces had already given new contracts to players Dondon Hontiveros and RJ Jazul, who were extended for two years, the same number of years given to Raphy Reyes. Sam Eman and Eddie Laure each were given a one year deal.

“We have renewed the contracts of Dondon and RJ middle of the season. We want to secure Dondon. We’re also on the verge of signing Nic Belasco for a new pact. These are the rewards I can give to the players,” said Trillo.

“We want to continue on what we started and want to make sure we will do the good things did in the next conference and the coming years by winning with integrity,” he added.

Meralco strikes down trade rumors involving "important piece" Cliff Hodge

MANILA -- If Barangay Ginebra San Miguel calls Chris Ellis as one of the team's building blocks, Meralco Bolts governor Ramon Segismundo considers Clifford Hodge as an important piece.

“Cliff is very important to us. The rumor is not true, he’s still with us,” said Segismundo, who likewise denied rumors that they are offering rights to Taulava and Hodge for Ellis and Josh Urbiztondo.

This was the reaction of the amiable team official when reached by Solar Sports Desk to shed light on talks that recently circulated on different basketball fora on the internet.

“Hindi kami nag-alok ng ganun. None that I know of,” stressed Segismundo. “Like I said, we are just waiting for their offer. The ball is in Ginebra’s court regarding Asi.”

The incoming PBA chairman of the board also stressed that they would want Ginebra or other interested parties to lay down their offer so they can start talking.

“As far as I am concerned, there’s nothing on the table (no offer from them yet). We’ve been waiting for it,” added the soft-spoken official.

“As soon as we get something from them… we’ll act on it,” Segismundo reiterated.

Segismundo even encouraged Air 21, which is said to be willing to offer Noy Baclao for Taulava’s PBA playing rights, to make official their offer if there is really any.

“Firstly, they have to formalize their offer and we will evaluate it. What we need is an official offer from them,” he added.

The Taulava saga has long been circulating with both teams willing to start negotiation, but nobody’s willing to initiate talks.

“Nagpapakiramdaman pa sila eh. Hindi naman natin masisisi kasi arch-rival companies yang mga yan. Pero kung may magmi-middleman, baka gumalaw,” said a source who refused to be named.

Since leading the San Miguel Beer-Philippines to the title of the last ABL season, which he was
named MVP, Taulava has been keeping his conditioning up just in case a call to return to the PBA comes along.

The 40-year-old slotman is doing plyometrics training thrice a week, apart from his daily gym workout.

“I always need to get myself ready,” said Taulava, who said he’ll be willing to stay in the ABL if no deal for him will be reached.

Salud eyes 'win-win solution' as sources reveal PBA coverage returning to PTV-4

PBA commissioner Chito Salud said on Wednesday he expects a "win-win solution" as he and the board awaits the final proposal from Sports5 with regards to the television coverage of the pro league's games, which Spin.ph sources said is headed back to PTV-4.

Sports5, through MediaQuest head Noel Lorenzana, last week presented a third proposal which the board did not find acceptable as the league stood pat on the terms of the broadcast contract which calls for the live airing of the games in a VHF channel.

The main component of Sports5's proposal had been the live broadcast of the games on Aksyon TV 41, TV5's sister channel on the UHF band, with the matches also aired on a live or delayed basis over TV5.

Salud, however, said the board has since sent a counter-proposal to Sports5 and he expects an answer from TV5's sports arm in the next few days - or early next week at the latest.

“May posisyon na rin tayo dyan, and that’s for their consideration and we are just waiting for them to get back to us,” said Salud who will immediately call a special board meeting as soon as Sports5 executives submit a new proposal.

“We are waiting for word from them. As soon as they come back (with the new proposal), I will immediately call for a special meeting for the final decision,” added th PBA chieftain.

Salud made his pronouncement as reports reached Spin.ph that Sports5 is currently ironing out a blocktime agreement with PTV-4, the home of the league during its golden years in the eighties.

Sports5 is forced to look for a new partner VHF station after ending its blocktime agreement with IBC 13 last May. The television outfit is also having a hard time squeezing the broadcast of the games into TV5's much improved and already crowded prime time programming.

Sources told Spin.ph that PTV-4 remains the only logical option for Sports5.

“Hindi kasi kayang ilabas pareho sa TV5 yung dalawang laro kada game day. And the board wants a VHF channel. Kaya we have to find a way,” said a source from the network.

The government-owned PTV-4 is also undergoing massive revitalization after President Benigno Aquino recently signed into law a new PTV charter with a fresh capital infusion of P5-billion to finance the modernization of its equipment and transmitters as well as satellite stations in the provinces.

At the same time, the source denied Sports5 is considering a return to IBC-13, a sequestered station that has been put up for sale by the government.

“Hindi na kami nakikipag-usap sa 13, although we inquired once kung open pa yung time slot ng AKTV dati (sa IBC 13). Pero hindi na kami nakikipag-negotiate ulit sa kanila,” said the source, who pointed to PTV’s superior signal and larger network of provincial stations nationwide.

At this point, showing the games on a UHF channel is already out of the question as far as the board is concerned.

"Unless the PBA owners change their minds, the broadcast of the PBA games on Studio 23 a few years back will be the last appearance of the league in a UHF channel," Salud said.

"We can't settle for a network that has a signal and frequency less superior than IBC 13," he added.

Sources said Sports5 is in the process of coming up with "different combinations" which they will present to the board once finalized.

“Syempre, gumagawa ng iba’t ibang plano para ipapakita na ready na ilalabas na plan A, plan B etc. sakaling magtanong o hindi kursunada ng board,” he said.

Floppers to be fined, Competitions Committee ok’s changes

THE PBA will be clamping down on floppers.

League Commissioner Chito Salud said that the PBA is set to adopt rules against flopping arrived at by the competition committee in a meeting last Wednesday.

Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel mentor Alfrancis Chua and Air21 counterpart Franz Pumaren, as well as PBA Operations Director Rickie Santos, Media Bureau head Willie Marcial and Supervisor of Officials Ramil Cruz were also present and helped come up with new rules dealing with flagrant fouls, double lane violations, delay of games and review of shots beating the 24-second shot clock.

“It was a very nice, frank exchange of ideas as we continue trying to improve the quality of the games and make them more exciting for the fans,” related Salud.

Once the PBA Board gives its nod to the new rules in its next regular meeting, Salud said he will recommend the newest changes to be implemented as early as the Governors’ Cup that kicks off Aug. 14.

It is on those who exhibit exaggerated reaction to a contact, whether it is a foul or not, which will be frowned on most by the league, however.

Salud said such flopping acts, if found out upon post-game review, will be subject to penalties, such as fines starting at P5,000 and escalating from that with every similar offense.

“Unless the flop affects the play, the game will not be stopped, but everything will be reviewed by the Commissioner’s Office afterwards,” explained Salud.

“I don’t think any suspension would be in order since it will deprive the fans of seeing their player in action, but the penalties will be hefty enough should they accumulate.”

Also agreed on is for the league to revert back to the original definition of flagrant fouls.

“Whereas at present there are various specific acts enumerated under Flagrant Fouls Penalty 1 and 2, it has been proposed that we go back to the original meaning of the fouls. F1 are unnecessary while F2 are all those deemed by the referees to be both unnecessary and excessive,” said Salud.

A flagrant foul committed on a three-point shooter has also been modified, according to Salud. “Before it used to be mere two free throws and possession,” he related. “A change has been proposed for it to be three charities plus possession.”

The rules on a double lane violation have also been changed. What used to be strictly a jump ball at midcourt, whether the last charity was made, is now being changed to a jump ball only if the free throw is missed. A successful free throw on a double lane violation will be counted.

The referees will be more lenient regarding delay of game calls. A technical foul will only be called after two warnings, instead of just one as before. (NC)
