MANILA -- Barangay Ginebra San Miguel star forward Rudy Hatfield has retired.
After 14 years of an illustrious PBA career, the player known as the H-Bomb has decided to focus on his family and ministerial obligations abroad.
Hatfield broke the development to his teammates during the team’s first day of practice Monday.
The 35-year-old wingman is known for his brute force in the paint, making him one of the most relentless rebounders in his era averaging 10.9 points and 9.7 boards while playing for Tanduay, Pop Cola, Coke and Ginebra.
Hatfield won a championship with Coke in 2002 and again with Ginebra in 2008.
The hard-nosed cager was sorely missed by Ginebra fans in 2011 after he decided to retire the first time, which eventually became a short leave of absence when he returned a few months later.
Hatfield’s departure will definitely leave a big vacuum in the frontline of Ginebra, who are still hoping to get veteran Asi Taulava in the fold.
BARANGAY Ginebra coach Al Chua announced before his players that he was stepping down as tension rose on the day the Gin Kings returned to practice, multiple sources told Spin.ph.
Just moments after Rudy Hatfield announced his retirement (for full story, see Ginebra's Rudy Hatfield retiring after 14 seasons in PBA), sources said a bigger surprise jolted the team when Chua told the players of his decision to quit his position.
Although he led Ginebra to the PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals just months after taking over from Siot Tanquingcen, Chua had been unhappy with some of the decisions made for the team by company officials, sources said.
However, Chua told the players that he was resigning for "personal reasons."
“Nag-resign daw coach Chua sa practice. Inaawat pa ng team,” said a source who was present during the closed-door practice session.
According to sources, San Miguel Corp. sports director Noli Eala and Ginebra board representative Robert Non had to rush to the Kings practice facility at Xavier School in Greenhills to talk to Chua.
Both sports officials of Ginebra were still meeting with Chua inside at the gym as of posting time, hopefully to talk him out of his plan.
“Ang gulo nga sa amin ngayon. Nagulat nga kami lahat sa mga pangyayari. Andun pa sila nag-uusap pa,” said the source.
Another source told Spin.ph that even Ginebra superstar Mark Caguioa tried to pacify Chua and pleaded with him to reconsider his decision.
However, sources close to Chua bared that the pony-tailed coach had long been contemplating resigning and even took a vacation with his wife in Japan last month to think things over.
Team insiders said Chua had no hand in the choice of personnel who joined him in the Ginebra staff after a coaching shuffle initiated by San Miguel.
A YOUNGER breed of rookie hopefuls is expected in the PBA draft this November.
The league will now be accepting applicants as young as 21 years old for the November 3 event provided the player has reached the new age limit by the time the 2014 season of Asia’s pioneering pro league opens in late November.
In previous years, college undergraduates must be at least 23 years old by Draft Day to be eligible.
If a rookie hopeful is younger than 21 by November 17, he must have already completed a four-year college course to be eligible for inclusion in the final draft pool.
The new eligibility requirements were approved by the PBA Board of Governors last March.
The rookie grab bag this year will not be wanting in talent. Among those expected to make the big jump are some of the best big men in college and the PBA D-League like seven-footer Greg Slaughter, PBA D-League and NCAA MVP Ian Sangalang, and Ateneo frontliners Nico Salva and Justin Chua.
Likewise set to join the draft are talented wingmen and guards including RR Garcia, Ronald Pascual, Carlo Lastimosa, and Jett Vidal.
Two-time UAAP MVP Bobby Ray Parks is said to be weighing his options on whether to turn pro this year or next year.
Last year, Petron tabbed big man June Mar Fajardo with the No. 1 overall pick.
