Selfishnet exploits an very old technique called ARP cache poisoning, to convince all other nodes on your LAN that your own machine is the default gateway. After this, all their Internet-bound traffic will be sent to your box instead of their intended destination, and only you will have real Internet access.
While a crafty one-click way of hogging your Internet connection, it’s also easily defeated by setting a static ARP entry on each node, permanently storing the MAC address of the real router. On Linux, for instance, a simple arp -s 192.168.0.1 re:al:ma:ca:dr:ss should stop anyone else running Silentnet on your LAN from lying to your box.
If you’re trying to, say, stop your roommates from hogging your shared connection with BitTorrent or video-streaming, a more effective way is to set up QoS (Quality of Service) controls at your Internet router, restricting the bandwidth that can be assigned to such activities.
